  • On Aug. 2, 1990, when Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait, the Defense Communications Agency was called upon by the Department of Defense to establish a critical communication network. By employing cutting-edge technologies like microwave, fiber optics and copper cable, the DCA successfully set up over 100 satellite links, forming the Southwest Asia Telecommunications or SATS network. DCA's unparalleled contributions during the Gulf War played a vital role in the success of military operations, leading to its well-earned redesignation as the Defense Information Systems Agency in 1991.
