    Very nice, Matt. I was born in Stranraer but left in 1982 and worked & studied in London. I then moved to the Medway Towns and married there in 1988. We emigrated to Canada in 1994, where I live today in Calgary, Alberta.

      Thanks, enjoyed my visit to your home town! Have you been back since, has it changed much over the years? Love Calgary by the way, I visited in around 2005 and really enjoyed my stay in the city. I remember visiting Lake Louise too - another stunning place nearby. Canada is amazing!

    Nice place stranraer spent many a day there, you can get boats to ailsa Craig from Girvan Harbour.

      Thanks for the info Andrew, I'd love to do a trip over to the island. Just sitting there on the coast looking out towards it really sparked my imagination. I didn't realise you could get a boat from Girvan - definitely good to know! Have you ever taken the trip?

      @@MattWhitingsEurope not myself but it's meant to be a peaceful place, there used to be a qaury on the island and boats still dock there, you can usually get one of the fishing boats over for a small fee

    A very good video which shows the town in a good light. A slight criticism is that like another video of the town I saw last week both would have benefited by being fact checked by a local. It's Cairnryan not Canryan, and it's not the remains of the castle that's all it ever was. Ailsa Craig, our local important landmark, would have been worth a mention too where granite is quarried to make world class curling stones. You missed out by not visiting The Grapes, a pub in town which is like walking back in time. Maybe on another visit?

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for the feedback, interesting to read. If my memory serves me rightly I talked about Ailsa Craig in the previous video on my drive between Ayr and Stranraer so I didn't want to repeat it. I certainly hope to visit again at some point so will take your recommendations on board if I do. Thanks for watching!

      @6dicksonb 2 місяці тому

      He did mention Ailsa Craig, just not in detail. He clearly meant what was left of the Castle grounds as it did used to have land around it. I wish people wouldn’t be so nippy. He shows Stranraer in a good light considering it’s been declining for years! I think he did a great job!

    @6:04 Minor connected fact is that the storm that took out the Princess Victoria was/is the same storm that travelled round the coastline of Scotland and promptly flooded Canvey Island and drowned 53 people.Everyone remembers Canvey but no-one remembers The Princess Victoria---sad really.

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  Рік тому +1

      Hi Selwyn, excellent bit of information and you are absolutely right. Very sad indeed. Thanks for watching the video!

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 Рік тому

      It's surprising that the Tragedy of the Princess Victoria is so little known of in U.K.
      A You Tube algorithm suggested it to me after I'd watched a 'Titanic' exploration video.
      It compelled me buy a book about the disaster ''Death in the North Channel'' Many factors converged to create the Disaster, but the primary reason was the Captain.
      Despite going down with his Ship, {as did the Heroic David Broadfoot} he should never have decided to set sail into the teeth of that storm with hurricane force winds and 40 foot seas.
      The Captain had the 'Last word' as to sailing or not.
      Captain thought it would be ok, as he had weathered many a storm before.
      This was a terrible storm, which almost immediately stoved in the guillotine door and flooded the car deck, setting forth a chain of failings.
      RIP all who were lost.
