Finally a video that isn't just an ad for Field Notes or Moleskin notebooks and the Bullet Journal book
    Keep the good work, man

No ads this year! Although we'll see what happens in the future because I need a new place to live LOL.
I'm not quite sure why such a high percentage of the videos feel like ads (but I have a bunch of ideas as to why).
Do you like Field Notes, Moleskin, and Bullet Journals or do you just struggle through the videos?
      Thanks for the comment!

@@mezalos If you're looking for anything in particular just let me know. I think I have enough written for well over 1000 videos; but, if you want something prioritized I could probably fit in a few videos per year.
This sort of "data" video seems to be doing quite well (potentially because it's basically just me reading keywords) so I'll keep the rest of the playlist scheduled for this year and maybe finish the next 30 ((hopefully) in the first half of) next year. If the data videos are objectively what people want, I'll probably push to create at least 100 of them... although there is a limit on how many I can make - due to them being based on observations of a shrinking sample size.
The data videos probably take roughly 10x the time of a normal video I make so... I can't make them every day haha.
but yeah when it comes to real life examples: are you looking for something more like a time lapse of a person working at their desk? or a guy reading through a self made book on edible roots, berries, and mushrooms while foraging in a park with no cell service?

I love binders and how customizable the covers can be!
But I avoided them for years because the paper sheets always end up loose or falling from it.
This year i started my own journal + commonplacing hybrid notebook and figured out that i could use a binder with plastic sleeves to protects the paper and make it durable.
    It worked!
I still have 20 pages left of my 1st hybrid notebook, but I am already filling my binder first with art pieces and family pictures ✨️
It is so much fun! Hope to see more from your binder!

      That's so cool!
The most durable binder I have uses plastic sleeves to protect the pages. It's almost 20 years old at this point - and is the best record of what life was like back then!
I hope your art pieces and family pictures stay just as well protected! ✨

      Thanks!
Do you want me to hold it up more? Or simply focus more on the writing than my face? Or maybe a flip through? Perhaps something more complex like hold it up and edit in a highlight or underline for whatever I'm reading as I read it? I'm a bit confused.

    • @thepostgradyear
      @thepostgradyear  2 місяці тому

yeah confusion seems to be going around
basically this is "How to - Data - Year 2" but as it is me simply talking about the main types of videos on Commonplace Books, it might have been more accurate to label it as something like:
"Searching for the least overused format of videos on How to Make a Commonplace Book and presenting a numbered list of what I believe are the most frequent types of framing as of fall 2023 with items higher on the list having more views and items near the top but with a smaller number signifying what is likely a more efficient type of video to make"
but that's an absurdly long title and it's still not totally accurate
the main type of person who would benefit from such information is the type of person who makes videos on the search term "Commonplace Book" and as that only applies to roughly 50 - 500 people depending on how we count it - this video broke containment haha
in the future I plan on making this sort of thing much more clear and understandable in both the first 30 seconds and the description - and we're approaching the second scheduled set of 10 so I guess you can tell me how I did (if you're willing to risk not getting anything out of a second video)
thanks for watching the full video! If you're looking for a specific type of video like "How to make a commonplace book" or simply want something explained in a slightly different way; I'll probably reply within 3 hours to 3 days (no promises lol) - but there's currently a glitch on the channel (and others) which sometimes hides comments (unless someone uses the "sort by" button (to find them) to the right of the number of comments on the video)

      @@ha3908 watched your pend?
Okay so the definition of a commonplace book depends on who you ask. Some people will say it's basically anything related to a journal/scrapbook/album/etc. from the last few thousands years. Others will say it's only something done by White Christian thinkers in a specific style lined out by one specific British guy and then focused on something like quotes from the same types of guys. Normally people are somewhat in between the two extremes.
If I were to explain a medium between those two I might say something like:
To me a Commonplace Book is simply the book a person uses to understand their personal library, themselves, and/or the combination of ideas. It's a practice that doesn't really exist anymore. At least percentage wise. The portion of the population that does it might actually be higher than at most other points of history.
But in the modern era it usually makes more sense to use digital applications and the internet. If the book was for summaries, lists, notes, and all the other stuff we use computers for... then literally why use a book? We have many apps and websites which now fill pretty much whatever void a person who commonplaces could want. With the main exceptions of using it like a scrapbook or having a book no one can hack.
If you want an easy to understand definition or complete understanding I would probably try this:
      1. read the top paragraph on the commonplace book wiki (after finishing this comment)
      2. read the top paragraph on the personal knowledge base wiki
      3. watch 5 different videos (1 from 5 different channels) on what a commonplace book is
but above all: just remember that none of the definitions are satisfactory as we're talking about something that might be almost entirely fact or fiction, words or visuals, science or faith, etc.
I like to think of it as journals/scrapbooks/albums/etc. being a bunch of square tiles on a floor and commonplace books being the definition of a rectangle.

@@ha3908 thanks for being patient with me!
part of the reason why I'm a bit hesitant to give a precise answer on what commonplace books are is.. oh wait this might be a list haha:
      - one of the people who put out one of the most viewed and liked videos on commonplace books just got roasted in their comment section for it "not being a commonplace book"
      - the definition of a commonplace book depends on which eras of history a person thinks it belongs to - like if they think it goes back thousands of years that's like trying to define what a roman solider was with one definition for kingdom, republic, empire, multiple empires, byzantine empire, etc.
      - I'm trying to create a modernized version which is workable for children and used in schools - aka my definition has to be different so I probably won't explain it in the least loaded or repackaged way
the British guy people normally refer to is John Locke and I am quite frustrated with his system because it's what I started with and found many parts of his process to be uhhhh designed in a way I found unsatisfactory - people will often use his system to build their own but it's fairly rare to find someone who actually follows it completely - I think this is one of the reasons why people are so confused - because a large percentage of people focus their learning on one guy and then grab bits of his system before either expanding it or focusing on only a single aspect that suits their needs

      @thepostgradyear  2 місяці тому +2

thanks for letting me know I'm gonna make it!
      what even is this?
      Title:
      - this is "Commonplace Book: How To - Data - Year 2"
      - "Commonplace Book" - done as a binder
      - "How To - Data" - the closest (as far as I know) as to the data anyone has tried to create and share about the performance and view count of UA-cam videos that include "Commonplace Book" in the title
      - "Year 2" - the second year of me working on this project
      Thumbnail:
      - the thumbnail simply shows me, what I'm going to talk about, and what will be in the video
      Description:
      - the description is more of a live react than a descriptive description
      Process:
      - explained in my video "Commonplace Book: 470 Thumbnails - Year 2" - although as this was also done in one take you might want to start at 7 minutes
      Presentation:
      - instead of constantly keeping the handwritten information on screen or duplicating it with edited white text that I leave on screen - I decided to simply set the binder down and talk about it - if you're looking for the information in the video and can't get it from my spoken words - simply click on the exact times at which I hold up the binder - if you can read my handwriting you can get all the information - in summary: when I hold up the binder the information is visible
      Other:
      - this was done in one take when I had 5 - 35 subs - this is why there is so much random laughing - no idea if anyone would watch - no idea if the process or project would be interesting or allowed - total gamble
      - I've been considering presenting this information digitally as a "Personal knowledge base" but there hasn't been any pressure to do so
      - unusual stats on this video: over 10% of my subs have come from this video directly, this video has one of the lowest average percentage viewed, this video is one of the most disliked videos on the channel - my current assumptions are that these stats are due to the novelty factor and failure to explain in the first 30 seconds and description

@@thepostgradyear no idea how the yt algorithm works, it does for some reason recommend me sub 100 or 1000 views videos sometimes, but usually it's stream vods. (I tried refreshing the homepage and out of 3 tries there was always one in the same spot, namely "invest in bamboo" from some guy homesteading in Thailand, some child talking about diary of a wimpy kid 2 and a song; no idea why, it just became part of the algorithm a few years ago)

@@SgFlaxy I think there was a change a few months or years ago that changed 1 or 2 of the first 12 video slots on the homepage to videos from small channels but I'm not sure about that.
Hmm I guess all of those things are at least vaguely related but it's a bit of a stretch. My guess (which I'm not very confident about lol) is that you might have seen a video about Christian women homeschooling their kids or talking about stationary/organization/do it yourself/arts and crafts in a home that appears to be self sufficient.
It's possible that other comments on this channel influenced the who showed up. I just had a long chain of replies on another video - with a person very focused on getting through medical school and memory related medical UA-camrs. Perhaps because I've been leaving a lot of comments on the channel of a Japanese artist living in Canada? Maybe a combination of things like the second most common viewer country being Brazil right now might be specifically targeting the small population of Brazilians with Japanese ancestry.
All I know is that I saw your reply show up within 1 minute and went to write a reply but this is probably not what you're looking for haha.
