    have you heard of obsidian? its like a commonplace binder on your laptop you can link notes together with tags and it can create a big network of interlinked notes. its easier than writing and rewriting notes in the binder, so i started using it. but honestly writing things out is sometimes easier to get the ball rolling so idk. hope this helps??

      I've heard of it! Your comment will probably help anyone who watches this video and is confused haha. Obsidian, just like Evernote, Google Docs, and a bunch of digital equivalents or variations, are likely considerably better for the average person. Technically those are more of a "personal knowledge base" than a "commonplace book". But this video shows off something more like a journal so I clearly need to work on my titles and descriptions. 😂 I've heard that the features of Obsidian are quite extensive. To the point where it even has the ability to download backup documents AND has a functional discord community. But those aren't the things I'm going for. My current goal is about modifying the education system over the course of centuries using several currently available tools. One of the tools of course being an altered version of a traditional Commonplace Book. Due to the fact that I've avoided talking about it... this channel is going to be someone incoherent until at least a month into 2025. I have something huge planned; but, the project is only about 1% recorded so there might be some delays. Thanks for the comment! I hope it helps!

      yeah confusion seems to be going around basically this is "How to - Data - Year 2" but as it is me simply talking about the main types of videos on Commonplace Books, it might have been more accurate to label it as something like: "Searching for the least overused format of videos on How to Make a Commonplace Book and presenting a numbered list of what I believe are the most frequent types of framing as of fall 2023 with items higher on the list having more views and items near the top but with a smaller number signifying what is likely a more efficient type of video to make" but that's an absurdly long title and it's still not totally accurate the main type of person who would benefit from such information is the type of person who makes videos on the search term "Commonplace Book" and as that only applies to roughly 50 - 500 people depending on how we count it - this video broke containment haha in the future I plan on making this sort of thing much more clear and understandable in both the first 30 seconds and the description - and we're approaching the second scheduled set of 10 so I guess you can tell me how I did (if you're willing to risk not getting anything out of a second video) thanks for watching the full video! If you're looking for a specific type of video like "How to make a commonplace book" or simply want something explained in a slightly different way; I'll probably reply within 3 hours to 3 days (no promises lol) - but there's currently a glitch on the channel (and others) which sometimes hides comments (unless someone uses the "sort by" button (to find them) to the right of the number of comments on the video)

      @@thepostgradyear ok thanks for the explanation I watched your pend and the last one also but still don't understand what is commonplace book exactly

    • @thepostgradyear
      @thepostgradyear 2 місяці тому

      @@ha3908 watched your pend? Okay so the definition of a commonplace book depends on who you ask. Some people will say it's basically anything related to a journal/scrapbook/album/etc. from the last few thousands years. Others will say it's only something done by White Christian thinkers in a specific style lined out by one specific British guy and then focused on something like quotes from the same types of guys. Normally people are somewhat in between the two extremes. If I were to explain a medium between those two I might say something like: To me a Commonplace Book is simply the book a person uses to understand their personal library, themselves, and/or the combination of ideas. It's a practice that doesn't really exist anymore. At least percentage wise. The portion of the population that does it might actually be higher than at most other points of history. But in the modern era it usually makes more sense to use digital applications and the internet. If the book was for summaries, lists, notes, and all the other stuff we use computers for... then literally why use a book? We have many apps and websites which now fill pretty much whatever void a person who commonplaces could want. With the main exceptions of using it like a scrapbook or having a book no one can hack. If you want an easy to understand definition or complete understanding I would probably try this: 1. read the top paragraph on the commonplace book wiki (after finishing this comment) 2. read the top paragraph on the personal knowledge base wiki 3. watch 5 different videos (1 from 5 different channels) on what a commonplace book is but above all: just remember that none of the definitions are satisfactory as we're talking about something that might be almost entirely fact or fiction, words or visuals, science or faith, etc. I like to think of it as journals/scrapbooks/albums/etc. being a bunch of square tiles on a floor and commonplace books being the definition of a rectangle.

      @@ha3908 thanks for being patient with me! part of the reason why I'm a bit hesitant to give a precise answer on what commonplace books are is.. oh wait this might be a list haha: - one of the people who put out one of the most viewed and liked videos on commonplace books just got roasted in their comment section for it "not being a commonplace book" - the definition of a commonplace book depends on which eras of history a person thinks it belongs to - like if they think it goes back thousands of years that's like trying to define what a roman solider was with one definition for kingdom, republic, empire, multiple empires, byzantine empire, etc. - I'm trying to create a modernized version which is workable for children and used in schools - aka my definition has to be different so I probably won't explain it in the least loaded or repackaged way the British guy people normally refer to is John Locke and I am quite frustrated with his system because it's what I started with and found many parts of his process to be uhhhh designed in a way I found unsatisfactory - people will often use his system to build their own but it's fairly rare to find someone who actually follows it completely - I think this is one of the reasons why people are so confused - because a large percentage of people focus their learning on one guy and then grab bits of his system before either expanding it or focusing on only a single aspect that suits their needs

      @thepostgradyear 2 місяці тому

      hi! omg you got here so quickly 🤯 congrats on the first comment and maybe the first view I'm happy you found something you love! ✨ reply: I agree that binders are inconvenient to carry around. Ring notebooks are fine but they're simply not what I'm used to. I think the most important thing is that someone actually uses their system. As long as it's possible to take things out or put things in a system I'm usually a fan of it. extra: If someone is very mobile, I might actually recommend something like taking notes verbally and then checking the transcription at the end of the week. I haven't tried out that sort of system because the tech simply wasn't good enough when I was in high school. I think a lot of what a person ends up using depends on which resources they have the easiest access to. For me binders were a great choice as I finally got into a living situation where people wouldn't steal from me constantly. This was super cool as I could actually create my own physical stuff and the bulkiness of large binders was part of the appeal. Although of course it was also useful to be able to access more than 100 pages without having to open additional binders or notebooks or whatever. But the main reason I went with the binders was because I still had them from high school and one of the only things I could get basically for free was unlimited sheets of printer paper. btw I'm somewhat confused as to why the videos marked as ideas are doing so well but I could probably keep making them at this pace and quality basically forever. As far as I can tell they have the best energy expenditure for the number of views. I'll probably do more but I think I'll cap it at 10 for 2024 and maybe have a larger number in 2025 idk.

      oh hey lol I think something glitched because I was only able to find your comment when I clicked "sort by" on this video after manually clicking on it - as this comment didn't show up in notifications, in the place where people reply to comments, or in the specific comment area for this video specifically this happened to me when commenting on another person's video a few weeks ago so it might just be a glitch on the platform we had been commenting a lot back and forth so it might be that there's some sort of system in place to prevent people from doing that idk anyways I'm quite surprised to see you commenting on this video specifically because I thought the "ideas" videos would flop as they take so little time to make compared to almost everything else lol but right I should reply to you: I think I saw Everbook in one of your videos, and if not it was in the comments. I just looked around for a few minutes and the second most popular video on their channel (or at least one named Everbook) looks very familiar but I don't think I watched the video I tried having many binders and storing things physically but I got to a point where I was like: ummm over 25 was difficult to store but this is a life problem haha so since around October 2020 I've been pretty much entirely digital simply due to the fact that my ability to create new ideas and write things down for the first time far exceeds my ability to review and rewrite existing works - basically infinite thoughts but a non infinite living space the cabinets and shelves were very satisfying to look at and I felt a great sense of accomplishment but knowing I had more than 10,000 sheets of paper in my room drove me a bit crazy haha if I went back to analog I would have to follow very specific rules and idk if I'm ready for that the good news is that I wrote all I'll need to write for a long time haha now I'm just learning how to present it!

      No ads this year! Although we'll see what happens in the future because I need a new place to live LOL. I'm not quite sure why such a high percentage of the videos feel like ads (but I have a bunch of ideas as to why). Do you like Field Notes, Moleskin, and Bullet Journals or do you just struggle through the videos? Thanks for the comment!

      @@mezalos If you're looking for anything in particular just let me know. I think I have enough written for well over 1000 videos; but, if you want something prioritized I could probably fit in a few videos per year. This sort of "data" video seems to be doing quite well (potentially because it's basically just me reading keywords) so I'll keep the rest of the playlist scheduled for this year and maybe finish the next 30 ((hopefully) in the first half of) next year. If the data videos are objectively what people want, I'll probably push to create at least 100 of them... although there is a limit on how many I can make - due to them being based on observations of a shrinking sample size. The data videos probably take roughly 10x the time of a normal video I make so... I can't make them every day haha. but yeah when it comes to real life examples: are you looking for something more like a time lapse of a person working at their desk? or a guy reading through a self made book on edible roots, berries, and mushrooms while foraging in a park with no cell service?

      @@sofiawren So a few things: - the number of videos on the topic has been steadily increasing over the course of the last year (since I gathered all the thumbnails) so it should be well over 500 videos now - a few of the newer videos have exploded and gotten above 100k quite easily within a month - the number of videos above 10k might be double now - it seems that people who make the high view videos on the subject have at least one of the following: high level degree, autism, high sensitivity, perfectionism, split focus, etc - aka a list of how to struggle to churn out videos on the same topic every week - so it might be that the videos can do way better but the people burn out, have more profitable projects, or need to be in a specific mental state of solitude, low stimulation, or introspection in order to make the videos - and getting over 100k views in under a month probably wrecks that for at least a month xD - it's possible that there was substantial human error in the image acquisition process - although I think errors later on would have been more likely and below 1% - so maybe 5 errors max - I think I used quotation marks in the search as the majority of things which popped up were unrelated - meaning the upper limit is likely higher if slightly unrelated - this is the type of video which should should probably be more of a conversation starter that leads people in the right direction rather than absolute fact for all time lol - when it comes to why people watch... it seems there are a few reasons as to why but if people are looking for "commonplace book" specifically they probably want the ideas rather than buying a product - as opposed to other things like "planner" which should have the possibility of being loaded with ways to monetize the channel - so I think it's partially how people search but also people not wanting to be like - What's up UA-cam! Here's the contents of my diary! - one reason and thus a lower view count

It should feel a lot more personal but... it's less of a design choice and mostly just my near complete lack of social media. However, the structure of my description is intentionally set up to be like a live reaction. It's a bit uncomfortable for me to see some of the earlier videos I made (like this one). Which might sound rather strange because it came out a few days ago. But I made this many months ago; so I could give myself a year of wiggle room in case something came up (and something did for 5 months). I'm planning on making more videos like this one, but done in a way that clearly shows some prep, rather than just saying whatever comes to mind as I look at the page. I already have a backlog of over 100 notes so I think I'll focus on turning the first 100 into 10 videos after I finish my next project. Videos like this one will be coming out for the rest of the year (with a surprise at the end)! But the 10 videos will probably wait until around April 2025 unless I decide not to do them or break the chronology. Thank you so much for the encouragement! Your comment gave me another month of motivation!

    • @thepostgradyear
      @thepostgradyear 6 місяців тому

      basically instead of making one video I made a few less connected and somewhat incomprehensible clips lol basically this channel is currently focused on writing down random things on pages and organizing them in a binder which slowly turns into something useful the main point of the binder is to serve as a commonplace book within a theoretical future education system I came up with over the last decade but haven't had any luck communicating effectively so as I've been struggling explaining the entire thing with its many moving parts I decided to pick one of the many moving parts and hyper focus on that before finishing it and using it to explain all the other branches the first thing I've been using the binder for is documenting my process of creating the channel as the channel kinda sucks right now and I need to create methodologies and process for actually making it happen so this video is focusing on converting some information from other pages into something more useful - or at least reporting back to everyone what happened - but it's a mess there was a little rant explanation about how I said something slightly inaccurate in the past and I wanted to correct that tbh I'm really surprised you found this video lol so I'm aware of MBTI (mostly related to the 16 personalities test) and yeah I normally got assigned INFJ although that only happened about half the time I've heard some people from North Africa and East Asia talk about it but for me it mostly died in 2010 - 2012 also I want to fix up this comment but I logged on to schedule 5 videos so just know I'll get back to you if you reply with the @ haha

      that's true! but I've found I prefer the act of relabeling the contents page with the most recent thing going in the back of the binder, and the pages only being numbered as an afterthought or if working on something quite intensely. thanks! if you want it to be even more interesting you can use both haha they both have some great benefits and things which are uh... a bit inconvenient with a book the information sure is in there! so you won't lose it! but it's also stuck with a binder you can move everything around and do unusual things like grab everything of one category and move it into a second binder and look at that you have a binder on a specific subject! but there is also the risk of being at a bus stop in the middle of a storm, and accidentally opening up the binder - resulting in days of work ending up a part of nature lol

      it's a lot more time consuming, but it might be better to wander around with something like field notes or audio recordings on your phone, transfer everything into a book once arriving at home, and potentially take a picture of every page or a quick 15 minute page through (and video recording) once a year in case everything gets lost or destroyed if you do this on paper I suggest a double x through whatever you transferred - to make sure that you know you already went through it and can potentially still read it later if you want to - otherwise you might get home and have no idea what you worked on haha - btw you might find two x placed on top of each other to look a lot nicer and be easier to make than somehow perfectly eyeballing the middle of the each page I've heard that a simple two lines at the edge of the page is enough for some people but I don't think it would work for me unless they were very brightly colored but that might be too overstimulating so idk I felt weird leaving your reply alone for so long but I didn't want to be like: dang you're clumsy? that's tragic LOL anyways a binder system in a home makes sense but travelling with one seems risky although some people might see this and say something like hey you know zettelkasten is real right?

    • @thepostgradyear
      @thepostgradyear 6 місяців тому

      @@abcdefghijklm000 What do I Commonplace About? (great title idea lol) It's changed over time. I grew up with a hoarder who wouldn't let me get rid of any of my old schoolwork. So I convinced that person to let me convert it into something more useful and concentrated. It later focused on truth as I was surrounded by liars lol. Focusing on truth made it obvious I needed to try many methods, record the results, replicate them through additional methods, and make sure no progress was lost. Focusing on truth was risky as if other people I lived with found out I could have ended up homeless. So I made sure to make way more stuff than was actually useful. By writing random things about Minecraft for example and making it seem like I wanted to be a game designer but also being really bad at it I could stop people from stealing my books or reviewing them. It was way better to look like I was incompetent than a potential threat. That's part of the reason why the first videos on the channel look like this. But don't worry because I broke out of the habit several scheduled videos from now. The core thing I've commonplaced about is the future education. Education is the original core of the binders. It's a fairly consistent and easy jump to make from past to present and then to future. I simply look at what was, what is, and what will be. So it looks like a full spectrum of ideas, but that's because of all the things which came before. In some ways it is, but really it's a bunch of old projects being converted into a newer more relevant part of the school project. An easier way to think about the sections is as if they are myths. Stories told in multiple places in multiple ways but all on similar topics and all connected around the core ideas. In October of 2020 I lost access to printing and since then I've been focused on my digital version: a personal knowledge base. But this channel will demonstrate creating a commonplace binder and then use it to talk about education.
