This dude should trademark his voice or something. Whenever I hear it I think reviews and somehow it instills a sense of trust. Maybe it's because I've basically grown up with his narration on gametrailers or something, but his voice is truly unique.
I feel the same way. Gametrailers reviews were so in-depth and they told what exactly what I will like and dislike about the game.
Agreed! Brandon should think about voice acting! Maybe he's the next Nolan North or Troy Baker!!! $$$$ ;-)
agreed, his voice keeps me glued to the reviews anyway. I am a big fan of his reviews.
david attenborough of video games.
its hot, is what you meant to say
I admit it isn't quite as good as 999, or my personal favorite VLR, but I still really enjoyed the game and can feel nothing but joy that this series actually got it's finale.
I think they should have just kept the sprite work from 999 for the characters in the zero escape series they look a lot better then the 3d models we have in the other 2 games
I loved the spritework. But I though VLR used the 3d models in a very expressive and good way.
3d models are easier to animate
Something that I think needed to be pointed out is that the game includes dual audio for those who enjoy japanese anime.
I love this series. Definitely my favorite game so far this year. great review Ben :)
I only recently got the Platinum in Virtue's Last Reward and it blew my mind. Absolutely going to pick this up.
Didn't realise this was a series game, started playing it, 2 hours in I have no clue wtf is going on.
Definitely play (or at least watch someone play) the first two games of 999
I agree, the Zero Escape series will make sure you'll never forget it.
I just played through 999 in a couple days, I'm almost done with VLR and I'm looking forward to this one too!!! I'd never heard of Zero Escape before like a month ago and I'm hooked, they're incredible games
I feel like Phoenix Wright made the jump to polygonal the 3d more gracefully; but still this seems like a great game
I feel Phoenix Wright in some ways really helped pioneer the visual novel genre as a whole and that original trilogy is still one of my favourite stories ever but yeah the look of DD was far better than the difference between 999 and VLR.
I just recently played this game, even without context of the other 2 games, I enjoyed it. It was interesting that the "seek the way out" activities at first were very enthralling and kept me playing; once I was about half done with the game, it was only the story that kept me playing.
Just finished it now, the jump up in resolution when playing on PC makes it much easier to figure out what you can and can't interact with.
Nice review Ben! Still waiting for amazon to ship my damn copy!!!!!
Love your work Ben :)
Going to pick this up next on the Vita!
Cool review! Bummer about the animation but that seems like it won't even matter if they can still pull off the most emotional and violent scenes of the series so far! There's no way I wouldn't play this game after getting through the first two, I gotta see how it ends. Glad to see it's gonna be a mostly good journey!
Carlos's shirt pocket looks exactly like Kirby
the sharp edges made my eyes bleed
Loved the OST just by what I listened during the review
Any chance you guys are going to do a Necropolis review?
Glad to see this series getting the press it deserves. It's sad to wonder how much stronger other games could narratively become if this series was more widely acknowledged
The beginning to middle period of this game is awesome, but the ending is shit tier. There's far too many unanswred questions, and coming off of VLR I was super stoked for Sigma and Phi's personal mission in this game. However the payoff is cheapened by the ending when basically the game just tells you "we did it!" when it doesnt actually feel like you accomplished anything. Plus am I the only one who is super pissed that you still learn next to nothing about Free The Soul? That reigious cult was by far the most intriguing element of the story across the whole series, and all we get is one line from Zero saying that he's Brother.
I never played the first two games and I had fun with this one. It certainly felt like they mentioned stuff from previous games but never went in depth about it and more like just explained them quickly for potential new players. It felt like they thought that the game wouldn't sell well enough if it was purely catered to the fans of the series and they sort of ended it in a way to leave room for a sequel for this in case it sells well. I really liked this game and hope for a sequel, might want to go back and play the older games but I kind of don't want to if by the end of them I'm gonna have more questions than answers.
I kind of agree with you. Although I think the game is great overall, towards the end it loses its luster. The game just kind of gives up on puzzles at some point. Compare that to VLR, where the game ramps up the complexity of the puzzles the further into each timeline you get, culminating in the final escape room with the white cube in the center, with epic music blaring, and a myriad of hidden puzzles that test you more than any other puzzle so far. It's almost like an epic final boss battle.
Also, not even hinting at the identity of the religious fanatic was pretty disappointing. The idea that his actions would destroy all of humanity just because "wars" felt like a piss poor explanation, especially since that's all we have to go on. At least with a viral outbreak it makes sense.
I also thought the whole fragment idea with regards to gameplay just wasn't as enjoyable to play through compared to VLR's defined timelines. Not to mention, splitting up the cast of characters for the majority of the game reduced the game's potential for interesting character interaction.
I feel it is a you thing here. If you expected the last game to uncover the mysteries of the series, then you were in with all the wrong expectations.
am I the only one that thought that in ztd, junpei and akane's personalities became a whole lot blander?
I agree, and there voices were terrible (I play with Eng. Dubs) they should have got Junpei's voice actor from VLR, His style/attitude fits a younger sort Dojima from P4 (It was that VO who played Junpei in VLR after all) and Akane just came across as super irritating and bitchy. I hated their portrayals in ZTD.
They were ridiculous in this game.
i ve read somewhere, team carlos was written by another writer.
Obviously not
I thought they were unbelievably stupid
Most intriguing game I've played in a long time. Especially having come up to speed with the happenings of prior games.
I wish there was this much character development in JRPGs... :(
Or even in western games aswell
Played the first one, the story is amazing.
you can tell which video clips are 3ds and which are vita
Correction is now available on xbox one
Still have the 2nd game loaded onto my Vita I need to play
0:45 I played through the game without playing the previous two and it honestly never felt like I missed major plot lines. The game sums up what happens very well IMO, however the pay off at the end might be better if you do play the first two. All in all that's just a guess however, what I can say for certain is that I had a blast playing this without playing the first two.
He said something about the nuances of character interactions.
you ruined 999 and VLR for yourself...
Thank goodness. I know I platinumed VLR, and while I remember bits and pieces of it I don't recall a LOT of that game. Will have to check this out someday.
Yes but it's cheap and easy to get. Hell the superior DS version is like $20 or under and can play it on a 3DS if you don't have a DS.
Good review as always.
However if I may leave some constructive criticism...
I've started to notice that the title of the game is repeated an awful lot in these reviews, not sure if it's just Ben who does it or if everybody else does too (I noticed it in another EZA review recently not sure who wrote that though). Zero time dilemma this, zero time dilemma that, at points I feel like it's unneeded and would be fine without. Its just a small personal gripe though.
This is good criticism. It's something I noticed as well. Thank you for pointing it out.
*a small tear drop rolls down ones cheek* this is the first EZA member to reply to me.... but seriously keep up the hard work, lot a love and respect for you guys.
I'm here in...(wait for it).. *Zero Time*.
I'm in dillema to upvote this
Is the video footage from the 3DS or Vita? I surely hope the PC version doesn't look like that.
It's 3ds. PC looks way better and also has an unlimited framerate.
portjon97 That's great to hear. Thanks.
Don't go play this game because of the graphics, you'll be disapointed
Pedro Rangel I don't play game because of graphics, I just enjoy my time with games when they don't look like 3DS games. Plus I still have to finish VLR.
The Vita version looks much better but has some small framrate issues. If you're all about framerates, then you should go for the PC version.
Erm... where can I play the previous games?
Would make a great anime!
Not gonna lie, feels good to hear Ben Moore after Game Trailers died
I miss the thing you guys did in GT reviews where you would let a character of the game speak between the review.
So…how can I play previous series? Can I just, searching and find out?
999 with virtual console, virtues last reward is on 3ds, altough they will come out on steam later.
+RDGridJanika so basically every game will come out on steam? I hope that because this game looks like a my thing.
they announced the port, supposedly for steam, vita and ps4 maybe?
999 is on DS and iOS (but in a gimped version with no puzzles) and likely to get a Steam release (hinted but not announced) Virtue''s Last Reward is on 3DS eShop and PSVita and may or may not also drop on Steam (not announced at all, but who knows if 999 does well)

I really want to play this but not playing the other two games is keeping me from that. Some a time investment to play all three =/
Aliasing: The Game
It's definitely the worst in the series. So many unanswered questions from the previous games, and where the hell is kyle from VLR? Still a fun ride but nowhere near the level of the other two games.
Agreed. Maybe I went in with unrealistic expectations but i was not at all satisfied when the game ended. Sure the "villian" was pretty cool but as you said there were far too many unanswered questions
I agree with this as well. Still a great game but so many answers we were promised during the VLR Answers were never delivered. No real closure on characters like Seven, Lotus, Santa, or Snake. What of poor Clover and Alice frozen away atm? Who is the religious fanatic? Do they find him? The post game files were nice for a little bit of extra but it wasn't enough. Was really hoping for a scene between Junpei and Santa post 999, especially since they will be brother-in-laws.
Agreed. I don't quite understand the praises I keep hearing poured out by many reviewers. VLR did some cool stuff already done by a number of Japan exclusive games back in the early 2000s, but I can at least acknowledge that it introduced those ideas to a new audience. This one just rehashes many of the same kinds of twists and with an inferior presentation. :(
+Japesland I think the problem stems from them trying to answer all the questions from VLR but still trying to get newcomers into the series.
999 > zero time dilemma > vlr
The ABYSMAL animations really took me out of it. I was disappointed with some of the dialogue too. Q Team was overall just really annoying and nothing about their story was interesting to me. I loved the first 2 games and this one was a miss for me. I beat it but there was a lot of cringey moments that kind of ruined it for me.
I've been streaming this title on my twitch channel, and I've gotta say, it's been a really wild ride. It manages to satisfy both the people who know what's going on and want to see you react to it, and those who have no idea what the hell the series is about. Great title, and good review, EZA! I'm really glad to see you guys have come back into your own. You're a constant inspiration for me and my reviews, and I'm honestly glad y'all are pumping out content as consistently as you do. Thanks for being so awesome!
I still don't quite understand how this game is the final chapter when there's a huge plot that is waiting to be explored. Are we ever going to deal with the REAL threat of the entire series? Why not?
I think it is the final chapter cuz the series isn't that successful. If this one takes off, maybe we will get a 4.
Agreed. Would LOVE a fourth with Snake, Santa, Seven, Lotus, Clover, and Alice returning to help the 9 from ZTD to take on the religious fanatic that we still have no idea their identity.
The whole story behind THIS game was to end the series completely... Apparently VLR and ZTD were supposed to be released much closer together (like 12 months maybe from memory) but the series never sold well in Japan so Chunsoft (the devs) said "screw that game, stop making it". It was after the massive fan outcry in the West (where the series is most/more popular) that they realized it was justifiable to make the game and so they did.
Perhaps we will get a 4th game following on and wraping everything up better, yet after Danganronpa getting the 3rd game/conclusion to the established characters in 1/2/Another Episode done as an Anime with the New Danganronpa V3 being somewhat of a Reboot/Re-imagining I expect a similar fate for Zero Escape sadly (I make the DR and ZE comparison as each series is made by Spike and Chunsoft respectively, who we know today as SpikeChunsoft)
game of the year
Can't wait for 999 and VLR to make it to steam so I can jump into the full series. I played 999 on DS and absolutely loved it but I'm not really one for handhelds and I couldn't quite justify picking up a Vita/3DS for VLR. I just hope the wait isn't too long.
Yo is this the gametrailers review guy????!!!
That's us. We're all from GT. Welcome back! -Bloodworth
I enjoyed the game very much even though I think 999 and VLR are better...
One of the things I quite disliked qas the fragmentation of the narrativ. I think there could have been better ways to do that.
Great game!
Nice pixels.
The aliasing is strong with this one.
No mention of SAW? Ok then...
I just typing this when I see your comment
I'll never get over how shit this one was. What a terrible way to end the trilogy. Shit villain, shit twist, and no Kyle. Where was Kyle Uchi? Did you forget him?
At the point in time ZTD takes place in Kyle hasn't been born yet. Sigma even mentions this in one of the endings where he dies. He expresses how he's upset that he'll never have the chance to create Luna, Kyle, and the bunny thing who's name I forgot.
There are several theories though that his consciousness might be in the dog and stuff
You also forgot Kyle was supposed to be in this game.
I'm sure said villain will just MINDHACK you into liking this game. You know, he has complex motives, after all.
+Murasaki Akane yeah the whole "mind hacking" thing seemed like a convenient plot device to bascially let him do whatever he wants
This game was a huge mess and I had so much HYPE for it. UGH
hi guys, so is this like Danganrompa??
more like katamari damachi
nice.
I'm glad the blood is unedited, unlike Dangan "Pink Blood" Ronpa.
Okoa the blood in Danganronpa is intentionally pink as a stylistic choice
Venomous Vince no, they did it because they didn't want to deal with age restrictions
I hear it was a bit of a mix of both
beytrod - They chose pink blood because they didn’t want to deal with age restrictions? They’re all M rated games. The rating itself is an age restriction. It’s obviously a stylistic choice.
@@jkemp6791
Japanese censorship is inconsistent when it comes to violence.
Oftentimes M/R rated media still has censored parts that are only included in other versions like the "Z" rating (Japanese equivalent of Adult Only) and EVEN THEN it might still be censored.
The most infamous recent case that I know of is Resident Evil 7.
Even in the R rated versions you can expect censored material, so the pink blood might as well have been an attempt by the devs to keep it from being censored.
What annoys me the most about this game is that new cinematic style. I hate that everything is a cutscene. I liked the text boxes that you could move through at your own pace from the first 2 games, because I tend to play this on mute while I'm watching TV. But now I have to fully pay attention to the cutscene or miss everything they say. They also broke how memos work. Why can I not put the memo on the top screen like in VLR? Constantly switching between the game and the memo is horribly annoying. And somehow, drawing in memos does not work nearly as well as in VLR.
Haven't beat the game yet, but it's easily my least favourite of the 3 so far. Haven't been nearly as engrossed with it as I was with the others.
idk, I have mixed feelings about this game, mostly the ending
I agree with you but overall it was a great game. Not as strong as 999 & VLR though
I played 999 without even knowing there were other games, or that this was part of a game series, and because I'm a poor fucker who can't afford games like I'm throwing away money, I've been watching reviews on the following games of 999, and I'm honestly... not convinced. I guess the hype of 999 for me was too real, like, I thought the game would be really one dimensional, in the sense that the sole purpose of the game was to put people to their limits and test them, but when I figured out the story was much more intense and sci-fi-like in a way, it really blew my mind. Also, the jumping through timelines like it's no-big-deal in this one and the second were ridiculous IMO. However, the questions I wanted answered from the first game still stand, and I wished they had answered them. However, I'll give them a shot and watch the walkthroughs!
0:45 I don't think that's fair. I've already sunk 10 hours into the game without having played the previous two and I'm absolutely loving it.
you might be loving it, but not nearly as much as you would be if you've played the others. Seriously, once you do, you'll realise what you were missing. ZTD spoils quite a lot from the previous two, but it's not obvious if you're new to the series. One character's name for example is a major spoiler for Virtue's Last Reward, but it'll mean nothing if you haven't played it.
did Ben-Kun pay this on DS? cause it looks SD, the vita version must look better
this is the 3DS version, yes
Not to spoil much, but doesn't feel like the end of a series, but more like a new beginning :)
complex
I got the d2 ending and wow. It was the last ending I got. I literally got sick and I've been disturbed. Don't read ahead if you don't want spoilers.
Why. The. Fuck. Would. You. Kill. Your. Infant. Self.
DELTA WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU KEEP KILLING YOUR PARENTS AND SISTER AND DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF YOUR SELF. THOSE MOTIVES ARE NOT COMPLEX. THEY'RE INCOMPLETE. YOU LEFT YOUR INFANT SELF, INFANT SISTER AND BOTH PARENTS TO GO CRAZY AND STARVE TO DEATH.
No individual peice of media has ever made me so disturbed. Sure, there's no rape and canabalism in it, but most the time movies like that are going for shock value. It's not disturbing to me. This. This was disturbing to me. I wish I had never played 999's sequels.
i'm here early. how are you guys doing EZA? :)
www.twitch.tv/easyallies
I was really disappointed with this entry. Humongous disappointment and not even near as good as the past two entries.
The writing is still excellent, but that animation though.....ugh.
Both Eric and Mira were much better characters than all of C team
This game was so dissapoiting for me coming from VLR. So many bad choises was made like timeline fragmentation and character split into three groups. Newcomers like eric and mira was boring, story was boring, it wasnt intriguing at all. Im playing VLR again and it is so much superior game even if i know what will happen.
No, thank you
