I have personally loved both episodes. I know people say it’s filler but I found his vulnerability that was shown in this episode to be refreshing. I’m sick of characters being hella busted and never failing, so seeing him get surprise dropped by some Jawas was nice to me. He’s still a badass, but he has weaknesses. The length of this episode was concerning but I think it’s shorter because they released 2 episodes this week, so I’m hopeful for the following weeks that they will be longer.
In regards to the tracking fob, I believe it's connected to the "chain code" that's been mentioned a couple times. Some sort of number set that allows you to input details about the target, such as age and species. The Client is only able to provide "the last four digits" which was Baby Yoda's age. The tracker then scans for life forms that fit the parameters of the chain code, and leads you to them. I'm assuming if you have a complete chain code, the tracking fob will focus in on that life form specifically, like when The Mandalorian found the Mythrol in that cantina in Chapter 1.
I almost suffocated when the first Jawa got incinerated because I was laughing so hard, I don’t think that’s a good thing though, but they had it coming
This episode may have felt mostly like, "filler," but it really served to build upon the personal relationship between the Mandalorian and that baby, you know, develop the characters and their relationship with each other so whatever happens in the future will have more of an earned, invested impact. If they'd have jumped directly to the Mandalorian deciding on whether or not to turn the baby over for the bounty, there would be little or no connection between the two of them, so there'd be less weight to his decision. (I can see people saying, "He just met that baby, why would he care what they're planning to do with it?') But, allowing their bond to strengthen by giving them an entire episode's worth of time together, whatever he chooses to do will automatically have more significance to his own, and the baby's stories, and especially their story together. (Does that make any sense?! lol it's easy to picture, difficult to explain.) 👍😂
The Jawas defending their crawler against Mando kind of humanized him enough to make Boba’s “demise” feel more plausible, in that not everyone’s situational assessment is all-seeing. Also with the egg, it’s probably a kind of metaphor for the child and it’s carriage. Give savages what they want and their plans for it will be less than civilized.
I think the "weapons are part of my religion." Line may have been him being sarcastic or kinda bluffing based off the idea of Mandos they all seem to have
The whole scene in the first episode wih the armorer/blacksmith was set up as a religious or spiritual scene. It definitely seemed like a holy place and the armorer was a holy person. That whole room was like a chapel in lighting, mood and sound. There was even an altar. So, yeah, the armor and weapons are basically Mandalorian religion.
i think when ugnaught boi says that he hopes the child survives and it gives a good reward, he really means that he hopes the Mandalorian saves the child and the good reward is something non material, like peace of mind

On the contrary the empire wants byoda very much alive. The main guy just said he was being pragmatic because “bounty hunting is a complicated business”
I think the most logical explanation. Is that there are two separate bounties set by two different people. Possibly the other officer from a different Imperial Remnant sect has also hired bounty hunters. But unlike the people that hired the Mando, they instead have been hiring bounty hunters to kill it.
I'd say the Tracking fobs use some kind of DNA or Gene tracing tech? Considering that in episode one the imperial gave the Mando the last digits to track him and those digits was his age, I'd say maybe it's a form of short range gene sensor?
I had a buddy cop vibe from Yoddle following him as he was on the sandcrawler. Like his partner giving chase while The Mandalorian clung to the escaping vehicle.
If you think about it, a space ship would be the equivalent of a horse in western movies. A horse was a person life, especially if the were nomadic. Stealing a horse was a death sentence because by stealing the horse you sentenced the owner to death. So stripping a bounty hunters only mode of transportation leaving them stranded on a back water with no resources is a death sentence to the bounty hunter. So using lethal force is really defending your life. From a certain point of view.
If the classic formula of spaghetti western/Ronan samurai is followed, sadly Ug-Nolte will be eventually killed by other bounty hunters that are tracking the baby and his death will be the catalyst that turns Mando into the hero of the story.
I think when Kuiil says "I hope that baby stays alive and brings you a good bounty" he already knows that the Mando is invested in saving this kid, and he's battling with that decision. It's his passive-aggressive way of saying "you're really gonna sell that baby?" .
The shot of Mando holding out his knife had the same kind of attitude as Jon Snow drawing his sword against the hundreds of horse riders approaching him in Battle of the Bastards
I think UgNolte refusing money might also be foreshadowing, that some things are worth more than money. Which is something The Mando will have to learn if Yodel isn't going to get the egg treatment.
How is it that in two short episodes, this show has already created 3 characters that I care more about than anything that was made after Return of the Jedi? The Nomad, The Mandalorian and the Child are already more real feeling than anything in a long time from this franchise. If they can keep this up, it will be the future of Star Wars.
We're all going to have things we like and we don't like. It just feels different though because we have gotten as much content in the past five years that we did in the previous forty.

I was a bit disappointed the episode was shorter, and not the same length as the first or longer, but it looks like they are making the episodes just as long as they need to be. Also how he doesn't say a ton and gets guidance from locals, and the general mood and atmosphere of it. The mostly dialogue free action sequences etc. Great show so far!
Really great episodes so far. I won't repeat what pretty much everyone else has already said but one thing I am surprised about is that they havn't been giving the planets they have been on names (at least not that I am aware of). Usually Filoni and (star wars narratives in general) are good about naming every planet that is a part of a said story. You would think that this was supposed to be Tatooine in Ep. 2 but it hasn't officially been stated as far as I am aware.
I love the pure respect that him and Ugh Noltey(haha) show each other at the end of the episode. Mando offering him a job and Ugh refusing it because he wants to do his own thing and be at peace on his farm. Mando trying to compensate Ugh and him refusing any payment, and both thanking each other and meaning it. I was really expecting one of them to say "Goodbye...friend" when Ugh got on his animal to ride away.
The Sandcrawler sequence reminded me of the original SNES Star Wars game, because you had to navigate up the side of a sandcrawler while the Jawas attacked you.
The trackers (as mentioned in the first episode) only give the last known position. If you listen to the beeping of the Trandoshan's tracker, it's not beeping as fast because the last known location of Baby Yoda is still a distance away. You'd expect the tracker to be beeping frantically like the Mandalorian's did in the last scene of Chapter 1, but it isn't. Love the chapter by chapter breakdown, can't wait for next week!
15:35 Something I learned from having to watch movies after my kids go to bed, you never know what you will learn from watching things (especially Star Wars things) with the subtitles on.
Love that this episode really emphasizes the dirty and inglorious side of bounty hunting. I think we are going to be introduced to various splinter factions of the former empire. Some want the child for experimentation while others just want it dead to prevent them from getting him.
Q&A: In the Aftermath series, it describes a man in Mandalorian armor on Tatooine. Is it possible they are describing this Mandalorian or somehow Boba Fett’s armor was found? It’s been awhile since I read, but I remember that.
Baboda? Yoby? Yittle? Yodel? I've seen a bunch of great names. I think the tracker is keyed to genetic markers. Hence it's unique but severely limited range wise, hence you still need a skilled tracker to get you close.
The ugnaut answered for him when the jawas asked for beskar and you see that he answered rather firmly, like he had so much respect for the mando and his culture that he immediately drops an “absolutely not” for that trade.
Regarding the trackers, in Chapter 1 the Mando dumps a few of them on the table when he brings in his load of carbon frozen bounties. So that must be the way they track all bounties but it's kinda scary if everyone has a low-jack tracking chip embedded at birth.
Wouldn't tiny Yoda be around the mental age of a five years old by the time he/she is 50? That would explain that he/she is aware in some way of what is going on around him/her.
I think everyone can be tracked in this point in time. Every bounty he has had has a tracking fob. The way it works is you enter in all their information to find them. (He only got today’s age) in the first episode. You would just need all their information and last known position to track them.
I bet they make a life sized Baby Yoda Pop for Target. They have one of D-0 that i saw today at target. They also made the large Wicket pop.. so i totally see that...
On the subject of what Nick Nolte Ugnaut said about Baby Yoda at the end, he didn't say specifically turn it in for the bounty... he said "May it survive and bring you a great reward." I think he might have meant that in some cryptic meta storytelling way suggesting that it would bring him a "great reward" but maybe not in the form of money, but perhaps making him grow as a character and to make the right choice in the end.
The Sandcrawler sequence really reminded me of SNES Super Star Wars. That whole level where Luke has to infiltrate the sandcrawler and fight the Jawas is all that was running through my head.
I always thought the religion line was a bit more sarcastic, but it would be interesting if the Mandalorians also viewed fighting and war as a sort of religion.
I really hope The Mandalorian keeps the baby, and that’s why we see the empire after him in all the trailers. I couldn’t handle seeing something bad happen to the baby :’(
If baby Yoda was literally a couple of years old, I was theorising that Yoda's species are basically the star wars version of a phoenix. Yoda died in ROTJ and is reborn elsewhere in the galaxy, maybe he has some memories of his past life but as he ages they begin to fade away. "Yoda" could, using that theory, be as old as the universe itself and be the first lifeform to come out of the Wellspring of Life that we saw in TCW.
According to Emma Fyffe on last week's episode of Jedi Council, it's pronounced Kwil, like a quill pen. She was working the red carpet at that premier where they had a Q&A and showed the first 3 episodes and that's what they told her.
Am I the only one who noticed that those Jawas had RED eyes? I hope we get an explanation for that. The Jawas in Episode IV had yellow eyes. Edit: "What are they tracking?" His Midichlorians. (me ducks and hobbles away as fast as that Sandcrawler)
I really think this episode is also the first time we've seen Jawaese actually translated/subtitled on screen, which was awesome. I could be wrong though.
Two things... 1) The Mando's main weapon has to be a Disruptor Rifle. I think it's in the Jedi Academy game where I remember them mentioned, and described as outlawed throughout the civilised galaxy. Most recently seen in 'Droids in Distress' S01E03 of Rebels. 2) I've been assuming that the other bounty hunters after baby Yoda (Yodle) have been sent by other Imperial factions, possibly including Moff Gideon. Now, if we assume that IG-11 has re-booted in a backup body, then he'll probably be tracking Mando and will follow him back to The Client, probably bringing Gideon in tow (That shot from the trailer with his death troopers looks like the same town as The Client's). Perhaps Cara Dune is tracking Gideon on some form of revenge mission (from being a Rebel shock trooper), so assuming that a fight breaks out between the Imperial factions, Mando might find her as an ally of convenience as he did with IG-11. That's how my action figures would play it anyway :)
Finally a reviewer that prefers episode 1 over 2. Honestly I don't get why people say this is better than 2 maybe I missed something it was still a good fun episode but episode 1 felt better to me that being said BABY YODA IS CUTE AND I WANT ONE!!!
One thing I liked in this episode was that they hit on the beast hunter trope from EU Mandalorian culture, as well as the indomitable spirit that was a staple for Mandos in the EU. Even in the face of death, the Mando still stood to fight. No the episode wasn't quite as hard hitting as the first, but I don't expect them all to be. I was pleased with what I saw.
This episode was enjoyable, and I loved it. It was one that felt like "filler" since it felt like a lot of details and stuff that I'd feel is normally glossed over. The fact that we went through all this good character building and action had to be significant. I really wonder if the whole series will revolve around Baby Yoda, or if it'll be wrapped up next week and we move on to another bounty.
Jawas, I hate em but love em the constant giggling was great, they remind me of gremlins. And damn Baby Yoda is cute AF. I love how they show the 1 man has limits, the Jawas just blasting him off the top of the sandcrawler was perfect, its an "aww shit" moment.
I bet UgNolte is happy to help the Mandalorian because he knows more about the baby than he tells. No one is that grateful with somebody just because they "brought peace to a valley", my bet is that he knows that baby Yoda is an important piece of a machine that he is a part of.
Loved this episode and loved your breakdown. From a production standpoint, it seemed to me that they used regular height adults to play Jawas in the long shots rather than kids and little people, and used force perspective and technology to make them small in the close ups. Not a complaint, just an observation.
yoda was a master jedi at 80 years old and died in his 800s, so 50- 80 must start to accelerate quickly. and stealing children in the the other faloni shows establish them as training force sensitive children as future imperial inquisitors.
the imperial scientist has a kaminoan symbol on his sleeve so baby Yoda could either be a clone or the imperials want to clone him (edit) actually, he could be Yoda's clone
i agree that i think he will turn the bounty in, but i disagree that he will later realize he should not have done it. i think he already knows that he should not do it, but he is going to use the empire to get more bounties to complete his armor set. then once he is all armored up he rescues baby yoda from the empire
I can see IG11 being the antagonist of the series. Trying to collect his bounty and take it back from The Mandalorian, and he would be trying to keep it away from it and the other people who want it.
The baby carriage should be called the Boyoda Corolla.
Yodling
It’s baby yoda I have spoken
lol. He’s a mini yoda. A Toy Yoda. lol
Its should be called the nissan sentra

Baby Yoda could become a foundling

You would think that this was supposed to be Tatooine in Ep. 2 but it hasn't officially been stated as far as I am aware.
Perhaps Moff Gideon hired the guild, and the two remnants are in conflict.
My best guess is "baby" Yoda is the equivalent of 5 to 10 years and more of a juvenile. Yoda was old even for his species at 900.
I get a very “ Firefly-lone wolf & Cub” vibe from this show, anyone else?
I pulled out my issues and found a couple of frames in the manga that match the film shots
episode 2 was some straight up star wars story fun.
The Sandcrawler sequence reminded me of the original SNES Star Wars game, because you had to navigate up the side of a sandcrawler while the Jawas attacked you.
I love his little emo strop about weapons being his religion
The trackers (as mentioned in the first episode) only give the last known position. If you listen to the beeping of the Trandoshan's tracker, it's not beeping as fast because the last known location of Baby Yoda is still a distance away. You'd expect the tracker to be beeping frantically like the Mandalorian's did in the last scene of Chapter 1, but it isn't. Love the chapter by chapter breakdown, can't wait for next week!
15:35 Something I learned from having to watch movies after my kids go to bed, you never know what you will learn from watching things (especially Star Wars things) with the subtitles on.
From what I expected from the mandolorian, I didn't expect him to be a single father.
I agree, based on the way you see it used on both bounties in episode 1, they seem to be life sign sensors dedicated to a specific genetic code.
The ugnaut answered for him when the jawas asked for beskar and you see that he answered rather firmly, like he had so much respect for the mando and his culture that he immediately drops an “absolutely not” for that trade.
I like listening to you guys while I do the dishes
Regarding the trackers, in Chapter 1 the Mando dumps a few of them on the table when he brings in his load of carbon frozen bounties. So that must be the way they track all bounties but it's kinda scary if everyone has a low-jack tracking chip embedded at birth.
Wouldn't tiny Yoda be around the mental age of a five years old by the time he/she is 50? That would explain that he/she is aware in some way of what is going on around him/her.
I guarantee you’re never going to see people calling baby yoda a Gary Stue for being so powerful
I think everyone can be tracked in this point in time. Every bounty he has had has a tracking fob. The way it works is you enter in all their information to find them. (He only got today’s age) in the first episode. You would just need all their information and last known position to track them.
I'm really liking Molly's hair lately.
I bet they make a life sized Baby Yoda Pop for Target. They have one of D-0 that i saw today at target. They also made the large Wicket pop.. so i totally see that...
‘The Mandolorian’ a bounty hunting adoptive dad to a green space magic baby
On the subject of what Nick Nolte Ugnaut said about Baby Yoda at the end, he didn't say specifically turn it in for the bounty... he said "May it survive and bring you a great reward." I think he might have meant that in some cryptic meta storytelling way suggesting that it would bring him a "great reward" but maybe not in the form of money, but perhaps making him grow as a character and to make the right choice in the end.
The Episode was a great Lone Wolf and Cub homage, so cool!
The Sandcrawler fight reminds me of Star Wars for N64 or SNES.. where Luke has to get to the top .. they are shooting at him etc.
The Sandcrawler sequence really reminded me of SNES Super Star Wars. That whole level where Luke has to infiltrate the sandcrawler and fight the Jawas is all that was running through my head.
Darth Vader to Boba Fett: No disintegration.
Mando: Hold my beer!
I always thought the religion line was a bit more sarcastic, but it would be interesting if the Mandalorians also viewed fighting and war as a sort of religion.
The “Show With No Name” would be fitting.
I was also thinking it was very reminiscent of Indiana Jones...even the music was similar.
Really good review guys. Well balanced, lot's of details. I have spoken.
The music reminds me of the Rocky themes. This episode was good. Again, it feels like Star Wars.
Weird I said that same thing "it FEELS like Star Wars." I'm not even sure what that means....but its accurate.
I think the fobs are set to ones specific DNA or biometrics
The music was amazing
Was it me or was that knife vibrating?? Good breakdown.
Yeah, I definitely thought so. Would make more sense as to how such a small blade instantly took down such a big beast too...
Am I the only one who noticed that those Jawas had RED eyes? I hope we get an explanation for that. The Jawas in Episode IV had yellow eyes.
Edit: "What are they tracking?"
His Midichlorians.
(me ducks and hobbles away as fast as that Sandcrawler)
Watching the manolorian I can't keep my eyes off the screen great screenplay
Maybe the tracker is tracking a specific bio signature since Yoda's species is so rare it would be easier to track an individual???
When Alex mentioned the Untitled Goose Game montage I half expected and hoped Molly would say yes
His name is Yiddle. I will *die* on this hill.
“Why is everyone trying to kill this BabyYoda?”
Emperor: “Execute Order: ‘Execute BabyYodas’”
Calling it now: Yoda and Yaddle named their love child “McGuffin.”
Love love loving the show so far
Yoda + Mogwai = Yogwai
I laughed out load when he hit his head in cramped crawler cockpit!
Mandalorian is so complex a diverse elements of dream
Jawas, I hate em but love em the constant giggling was great, they remind me of gremlins. And damn Baby Yoda is cute AF. I love how they show the 1 man has limits, the Jawas just blasting him off the top of the sandcrawler was perfect, its an "aww shit" moment.
I bet UgNolte is happy to help the Mandalorian because he knows more about the baby than he tells. No one is that grateful with somebody just because they "brought peace to a valley", my bet is that he knows that baby Yoda is an important piece of a machine that he is a part of.
A new planet we're living on in the Mandalorian
Baby Yoda again has a moment foreshadowing his healing abilities, they’re setting him up to resurrect Palpatine, that’s why the Empire wants him
Loved this episode and loved your breakdown. From a production standpoint, it seemed to me that they used regular height adults to play Jawas in the long shots rather than kids and little people, and used force perspective and technology to make them small in the close ups. Not a complaint, just an observation.
They should call that baby Yoby, yoda+ baby.
I like: YoBaby
yoda was a master jedi at 80 years old and died in his 800s, so 50- 80 must start to accelerate quickly. and stealing children in the the other faloni shows establish them as training force sensitive children as future imperial inquisitors.
the imperial scientist has a kaminoan symbol on his sleeve so baby Yoda could either be a clone or the imperials want to clone him
(edit) actually, he could be Yoda's clone
That's a nice idea but if baby yoda is 50 he'd of been born pre-clone wars
I say in the egg scene instead of the rhino they should have put in a krate dragon real missed opportunity
THIS ^^^^^
It could still happen.
Yes but he's not on tatoine
i agree that i think he will turn the bounty in, but i disagree that he will later realize he should not have done it. i think he already knows that he should not do it, but he is going to use the empire to get more bounties to complete his armor set. then once he is all armored up he rescues baby yoda from the empire
I loved the episode, everything Baby Yoda is absolutely adorable; 30 mins is not enough Baby Yoda! I also love Biggs behind you in the shelf :)
Loving the OutKast t-shirt “ATLiens” 👌👍🔥
I can see IG11 being the antagonist of the series. Trying to collect his bounty and take it back from The Mandalorian, and he would be trying to keep it away from it and the other people who want it.
