$5 RC Trainer

- Main foam material =$5
+ a little dollar tree foamboard and thin plywood
+ $10Blue Wonder Motor + $10 ESC
+Radio System + 2 $5 9gram servos.
Also hot glue and packaging tape and "music wire" (for push rod)
I apologize that the title of the referenced video is misleading as the cost of materials in not $5. When I originally made it, I only had to buy a $5 sheet of foamboard and all the other materials I found laying around my parents house. The name has since sorta sunk in and I'm not sure I can undo it.
I made the "$5 trainer" while on Christmas vacation at my families house home from college. I wanted to do a project with my little brother. I had been doing some rather tedious and complicated projects (chainsaw plane and I put an autopilot on my big flying wing but didn't make a video about that) and I wanted a break and to do a simple project to get back to my roots and demonstrate that you don't need to do a whole lot to make an airplane.
Sorta confession: This plane flew pretty badly! It has come to my attention that many of you see my finished result and are discouraged. At first, this plane, even with my experience, flew pretty funny. But after some tuning, it flew like this. I stretched some layers of tape along the bottom length of the wing to prevent it from bending so much, I also needed to really shove the battery up to the front so that it balanced at 1/4 of the wing chord (distance from front to back of wing from the leading edge). It is my hope that this video inspires people to try and make an airplane themselves.
Please ask questions! This was a fun, cheap, and easy build. To demonstrate the freedom of scratchbuilding RC Planes.
I had my little brother cut out the fuselage and wing because he wants to learn and try stuff.
Wing/foam was cut using my DIY Hotwire Foam Cutter
• Hot Wire Airfoils
But an even cheaper way to make a wing is to fold foamboard and use Ed's style from • ARMIN WING CONSTRUCTIO...

dear samm, the whole diy world miss you man.never forget your memories.
Love your plane, great video ! My name is juhasz, that is shepherd in hungarian ! Thanks brother 😁
Amazing. This build with a $10 brushless motor blows my mind. I remember when I was in elementary around 1990 and cost and safety factors for this sort of thing were incredibly prohibitive for our family. If you needed enough power to fly for more than a minute or two, you had to go gas. I suppose I need to take another look at r/c these days
i know!!! RC planes are SOOO easy to build these days you can make anything fly by balancing it right as weight isnt a big of a problem as it used to be
What are these safety factors?

Oh My .....
Beautiful!!!!!
Good job. Nice to see the younger generation enjoying the hobby.
Wow!!!! Super!!! Excelente video, sería bueno que hicieras más drones.
Saludos desde México!
And best of all, the uglier they are, the better they fly
Rest in peace
Not the prettiest plane ever, but it flies so well, very smooth!
Why not sell them online, I think a lot of people would be welling to buy.
it would cost more to ship it than the materials required to make it
What would he ship over, the whole thing? The $5 doesn't include any electronics at all, just build one, he'd be selling you just foam for $50
It'll just be better if he made printable plans instead of selling it,
That’s it. I’m building it
Stick a as3x on there Sam, will help him quite a bit, we flew tonight in a bit windy condition, in miles i suppose about 12 mph, but it was fun, flew until after dark with cub s2, even went inverted for a few seconds, to our surprise we managed to roll out safely, we are just beginners but we have a friend that flies exceptionally well,so it helps to have a tutor. I uploaded a clip under my channel of Ed flying his cub S2 , his 6th flight and he was having fun, also a short clip of the Radion pro battery hanging out in flight, making for some laughs.
Johan
Lucky Dube Thanks for sharing I checked it out!
Nice, dad's having fun with the boys, i like !
Yea I made him come out to film it and he thought it looked so easy he had to try! Stann Sheperd
@@SammSheperd what motor did uuse for this trainer? Can i use 1400kv 2212 motor?
Nice plane
Looks great!
very Nice,plane
Holy crap I just saw a wolf!!! Run! Ruuuuuuuuunnn!!!
R.I.P
Great video. Thumbs up!
Thanks! Maybe you'd like some of my others
Flies great. Good job guys. Go to Embry Riddle University in Prescott Arizona. Become jet pilots. You should.
+Pete Jansen hi, I'm a CFI now with aviation technology degree
***** SWEET!
That's spammtastic!
I accidentally left your voice recording at the very end of the air sled video. John Carlee and I laughed our asses off when we discovered it and then I had UA-cam trim it off lol.
Отлично летает не смотря на внешний вид! :-)
Nice build. Some simple wire landing gear would save the prop when landing..
+Mike Dunn Landing gear is tons of fun, If you can handle the extra weight. It would also help to balance the airplane, since getting enough weight in the front is usually the issue.
Lots of fun !
If i want to build a plane like yours do i need to put the wings in dihedral position or can they be laid flat ??
Well done, impressed
would this work on a 2200mah 3s?
This looks really interesting. I'm thinking about getting into homemade RC stuff and I would like to know what electronic components you are using. Thank you.
Pretty nice
With a 100*30cm (39*12") clark Y wing, very cheap and common A2212 1000KV with 1045 propeller and 3s battery, how much the recommended and maximum ready to fly weight? I want to built one but I'm worry about my plane become too heavy :(
Don't worry too much about weight, Just put more tape on the bottom of the wing to make it stronger or add a spar if needed or a bigger wing. But that setup sounds great!
+Samm Sheperd (SNRS) Made one! It flies very good. It's also quite strong even though it's mostly made out of mid-density styrofoam but a lot of packing tape really reinforce everything like 10 times stronger than before and I don't even need any carbon spar or support, just styrofoam. I've crashed it several times and the worst thing was happen is broken propeller. No any serious damage. Also, with wing dimensions of 100x30cm and total weight of only 650gr, it give a lot of lift and can fly slowly. I'll upgrade it with bomb dropper feature soon. So, what do you think?
Two question, which one do you think is better? aileron with elevator or rudder with elevator? I'm actually have all of those controls, but I'm just wondering which one's better.
Second question is which configuration is better in term of stability, efficiency, safety and anything else that should be considered when making scratchbuilt RC aircraft. Puller or pusher?
IRFZ44 Sounds great! I'm glad.
Rudder steer only works if the plane is stable and has dihedral in the wing. Ailerons are good if you want to be able to do rolls or if your wing is straight and has no dihedral.
Dude... I want to make one too! 😀
Guess who's gonna make it too ;-)
What?! You should've left it on there!
Can a plane equipped with ailerons and a cheap gyro be flown like a 3-channel trainer? In other words, if I introduce yaw with the rudder, will a gyro turn it into a coordinated turn? Said a third way, can a gyro substitute for dihedral?
I like the strength, simplicity, and efficiency of a straight wing but don't want to burden a noob with staying on top of roll, constantly.
really great
Wow u have husky😍😍
I’m making a plane with just 8 tiny drone propellers and I don’t know how to put working rudder and elevator thing
is it the 2730 1500kv or 1300kv motor?..after seeing this, i was inspired to try this motor to my estarter.keep it up...subscribing.
man! I hope my trainer flies that nice.
anthony perkins Thank you. A good stable trainer will fly itself, it just doesn't know where to go. And that's the best way to think about it when you're learning to fly. Only make small adjustments to nudge it where to go. When you try to make it do exactly what you want you can get overwhelmed and disoriented and the best thing to do is let go. As long as you're not right next to the ground it will recover and you can figure it out again. Also, long grass fields are good for crashes ;P
I see what you mean, thanks.
I'm going to try again and make sure everything is on CG and the prop is more stable and stay on and not flies off when I give it some juice.
Samm, I went to the hobby shop this morning for props. I couldn't find a 10x4.7 that was anywhere as flexy as the EP8043.
I ended up with the APC 10x5E. It looks HUGE by comparison. Do you think it will work with my A2212/13t motors?
I have finals today, but just wanna get in the sky :)
Brandon Cooper It should work well. Hopefully the prop adapter and propeller holes are the same size and it's easy to put on there!
Can someone tell me what size of prop did he use?
Hi I was wondering if you need a rc plane motor and esc or you could use rc car motor and esc
can you please help me to get a link for buy gyro for plane and tell me how to put that in a plane
I used the P1 Gryro stabilizer which is like $10 on amazon. You don't need one, it is just a nice experiment. I made it seem like I needed one accidentally by the sequence of the video. Once you understand what they do and how they work and you have a plane that you can already fly with out one. Then play with one
Okay fine I made a build video! ua-cam.com/video/aV5hILJe20U/v-deo.html
+Samm Sheperd (SNRS) smooth flying
Samm Sheperd man I was just goin to ask lol. Great job. Just subscribed to 👍🏽
Samm Sheperd r
what is weight of ur plane?
actually less is best usually....as you soon learned I'm sure addd
more glue lol
What kv motor is that? 1000?
Is there a link where i can get an esc motor and servos for $5
Some of us have boxes full of motors, servos, ESCs, LiPOs, receivers, props, etc. Samm's title made perfect sense to me.
Ah. Yes, this is the "Ridgeback" type fuselage. ;¬)
You said " This plane flew pretty badly!"
Can you point out what was bad about it's flight characteristics. I am building a similar one
+SsoulBlade 2 things:
1. excessive wing bend
2. Aft CG location.
1. My wing would bend a lot giving it too much dihedral. I suggest covering the entire wing in packaging tape. One section at a time and then joining the wing segments together with some hot glue and more tape at the seams.
2. The other thing is that at first I let my CG (balance point) be too far back and that made it fly poorly. It's hard to get the CG far enough forward with such a light weight motor. So I suggest a long nose so that a smaller battery up there can successfully balance the plane
3ch. ??
cool
WOHHHHOOOOO
hi I need the tool that u have used N electronic equipments
Hi..nice and smooth fly..
Mind sharing approx dimension of body and wings? and tail please?
+Faisal Inam Khan Sure it's still around, I'll go measure it. However bear in mind that this project was not to design a perfect airplane for others to copy, but was to show how simple it can be and to inspire others to try and create their own original scratch built airplane. The dimensions listed below were not decided beforehand but were simply the result of "that seems right" engineering.
Wingspan: 48"
Chord: 7"
Body length: 32"
Horizontal Stabilizer: 16" span
Vertical Stabilizer: 9" tall
Hi Samm. Thanks for your reply. I have been designing several planes but of them either not balanced or fast flight. I never managed to build slow pace like the one you designed.
I appreciate your response. I will try this.
Hope we share more knowledge
absolutely, I would love any questions you have.
For slow flight, the main thing you need is a LOW WING LOADING, meaning lots of wing area and little weight. Heavy small wings will fly fast.
For balance, if your plane is has a normal tail. I always balance it between the front and middle of the wing.
+Samm Sheperd (SNRS) where did you got that propellor
Damanpreet Singh Hi, I got this propeller from a local hobby store, but I usually buy propellers online. The propeller you use depends on the motor and battery voltage. The manufacturer of the motor should recommend a propeller size for your motor depending on the voltage of battery that you give it. And you can find that size propeller online.
In general: High "kv" motor = smaller propeller that will spin faster
And low "kv" motor = bigger propeller that will spin slower.
and Higher voltage battery = smaller propeller that will spin faster
And Lower voltage battery = bigger propeller that will spin slower.
Can someone give me link for the foam board he used?
thanks for the help. I am planning to make a video on my first airplane would you be okay with if I recommended your Channel in the video
+James Craft of course you can
How much does it weigh?
can i buy one
Be nice to show us how to make. Like to try this with my son
Graham Bate That sounds like a great idea! I started out using the Armin Wing method developed by Ed on his channel here: ua-cam.com/video/karr67ZYho4/v-deo.html
Or you can making a hot wire like I used on this plane, I have a video talking about it here: ua-cam.com/video/yIxyyTnT-hM/v-deo.html
you can make a fuselage out of a wooden dowel, or a square tube made from dollar tree foamboard, or just some insulation foam like I did here.
Give it a try! Have plenty of hot glue!
thx m8
Graham Bate Let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to help and I'm also curious what people struggle with most. I'd like to make a video on "everything you need to know to make an RC plane"
thx mate, I getting good at patching them up, but really want to start scratch building with my son (11), and ur trainer looks pretty easy for him to have a go, and easy for me to fly, (I am still learning), Anton my son fly better than half the guys at our club.
+Graham Bate ua-cam.com/video/aV5hILJe20U/v-deo.html
How we buy this????
Samm, could you give us the details of this plane please.
Samm passed away...
he passed away bro
Great video, I love the plane, you should put details and plans on rcgroups.com as this would be a good first trainer for beginners, thanks for this video.
Thanks! I have never made or followed another persons plans, I just build off of intuition and improve with experience. I think that airplanes are beautiful in their simplicity of construction and I'm hoping to inspire others to take a shot at it without the need for some other persons plans. This is not a concrete personal philosophy, just what I've done so far.
But this would fly just fine with a different size or shaped wing or maybe put a V-tail or some ailerons on it. The possibilities are endless! Could even turn the wings around and bam it's a conarded plane! Just move the CG!
next project, after i finish my 2 other annoyingly hard projects
What size motor is it used for this plane ??
I used this motor: www.headsuphobby.com/HURC-300-Blue-Wonder-1400kv-Brushless-Motor-G-272.htm
I want to make it but can i use just a simple dc motor 3v
Too small, need hobby grade motors
Oh ok thx for the help :)
butiful :D
how much u want for it?
does it have aerons
No, the wing has enough dihedral that the rudder works to control roll also
how do you keep the plane level without ailerons
The wing has dihedral, and thus will naturally bank in the direction it yaws. Great question BTW
+Samm Sheperd (SNRS) the dihederal is the bend in the wing correct?
correct
what battery did you use?
+Leafeon some 1500mah 2s I think. A 3s would be better though
How do you land it safely without landing gear?
Just let it belly land
Samm Sheperd could i glue lego wheels or would that make it too heavy
weight is not a problem, but some real wheel would be way better amzn.to/2lKBFjH
Samm Sheperd thanks but i think i'll have to look for them elsewhere since out country has no amazon :(
$5 eh? Where can I get a free motor, transmitter, receiver, and servos?
In your ass
So how much does the controller cost?
a 6 channel Flysky radio system is only like $50
OK, thanks.
Hi, could you make a video or just steps on how to make this because I would and I'm certain many others would also like to give it a go!
Your comment was featured in my new vid ua-cam.com/video/aV5hILJe20U/v-deo.html
Sam try to make a DIY rc air plane starter
+DIED12 ROBLOX&MINECRAFT What do you mean?
You know what you use to start a gas rc plane also my transmitter came in I mite be posting a vid gotta run to lows and get a light dimmer and a spring and some hot wire
To finish up my hotwire foam cuter
The starter I used to start the chainsaw is just one big custom brushed motor with a special grippy thing on the shaft. The only way I can think of to easily make an engine starter with out buying one is to make something to put in a cordless drill chuck. I'd have to turn it on a lathe and buy a silicone grippy thing, idk maybe I could cast that myself but probably cheaper to buy one
Dose it matter if I use ac or dc current for the foam cuter
Motor and electronics cost like 75
So this is a 3-channel setup? :)
+ILIKECATZNCHEEZBURGERZWITHCHEEZSHAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAICOULDGOONLIKETHIS4EVERBUTIHAZTOGONOWBYE yes, I'm using my 6 channel radio system like always but only using 3 channels.
+Samm Sheperd (SNRS) Thanks!
+ILIKECATZNCHEEZBURGERZWITHCHEEZSHAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAICOULDGOONLIKETHIS4EVERBUTIHAZTOGONOWBYE hey ILIKECATZNCHEEZBURGERZWITHCHEEZSHAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAICOULDGOONLIKETHIS4EVERBUTIHAZTOGONOWBYE that's a neat name, not everyday you see someone named ILIKECATZNCHEEZBURGERZWITHCHEEZSHAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAICOULDGOONLIKETHIS4EVERBUTIHAZTOGONOWBYE
Samm, thanks for taking credit for my design, that's something I shared on RC groups quite a while ago. Can't you guys come up with your own, why do you have to hack mine?
Never heard of you sorry. It’s pretty easy to come up with the same thing twice
Really odd then, here is the original build log: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2768024-Dual-scratch-build-new-trainer-concept-designs
no 5 dollars is 1 cents
Hello Sir, I live in Cambodia I want to buy machine both controller and air plan how can i buy ? thank you for your best regard
flying would be easy as long as you dont live in the Netherlands where there is simply no space
+emile I was in the Netherlands like a month ago, there's fields everywhere!
i live near amsterdam and there aren't many fields here and I cant travel very far because I am still 17 and I can't drive a car. all the fields nearby are usually privately owned land where you arent allowed to fly or it is just unclear.
Tip; Go by bike. There's enough sports facilities with open spaces, Just ask when they're available.
Noël D it is not that easy to contact a sports facility and they usually will say no anyways, I once tried moving my plane by bike, it didn't go so well
emile same bro i can feel you :(
i dont have access to open space or park either...i really want to make and fly it😭😭😭😭
Can u plz make me on off those I will pay @Samsherpard
Have you no shame?
BS, that wasn't no 5 dollars! Quit lying! Nice idea though! 😱😝😁🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇲
it's not really 5$ bro
I apologize, my reasoning in the description
ok, that's fine
but can you make an rc tank or armoured car out of cheap toys?
really great
how large of a propeller do you use?
Whatever is recommended by the motor manufacturer.
really great
