  • Main foam material =$5
    + a little dollar tree foamboard and thin plywood
    + $10Blue Wonder Motor + $10 ESC
    +Radio System + 2 $5 9gram servos.
    Also hot glue and packaging tape and "music wire" (for push rod)
    I apologize that the title of the referenced video is misleading as the cost of materials in not $5. When I originally made it, I only had to buy a $5 sheet of foamboard and all the other materials I found laying around my parents house. The name has since sorta sunk in and I'm not sure I can undo it.
    I made the "$5 trainer" while on Christmas vacation at my families house home from college. I wanted to do a project with my little brother. I had been doing some rather tedious and complicated projects (chainsaw plane and I put an autopilot on my big flying wing but didn't make a video about that) and I wanted a break and to do a simple project to get back to my roots and demonstrate that you don't need to do a whole lot to make an airplane.
    Sorta confession: This plane flew pretty badly! It has come to my attention that many of you see my finished result and are discouraged. At first, this plane, even with my experience, flew pretty funny. But after some tuning, it flew like this. I stretched some layers of tape along the bottom length of the wing to prevent it from bending so much, I also needed to really shove the battery up to the front so that it balanced at 1/4 of the wing chord (distance from front to back of wing from the leading edge). It is my hope that this video inspires people to try and make an airplane themselves.
    Please ask questions! This was a fun, cheap, and easy build. To demonstrate the freedom of scratchbuilding RC Planes.
    I had my little brother cut out the fuselage and wing because he wants to learn and try stuff.
    Wing/foam was cut using my DIY Hotwire Foam Cutter
    • Hot Wire Airfoils
    But an even cheaper way to make a wing is to fold foamboard and use Ed's style from • ARMIN WING CONSTRUCTIO...
    Building materials =$5
    + $10Blue Wonder Motor + $10 ESC
    +Radio System + 2 $5 9gram servos.

    Amazing. This build with a $10 brushless motor blows my mind. I remember when I was in elementary around 1990 and cost and safety factors for this sort of thing were incredibly prohibitive for our family. If you needed enough power to fly for more than a minute or two, you had to go gas. I suppose I need to take another look at r/c these days

    Stick a as3x on there Sam, will help him quite a bit, we flew tonight in a bit windy condition, in miles i suppose about 12 mph, but it was fun, flew until after dark with cub s2, even went inverted for a few seconds, to our surprise we managed to roll out safely, we are just beginners but we have a friend that flies exceptionally well,so it helps to have a tutor. I uploaded a clip under my channel of Ed flying his cub S2 , his 6th flight and he was having fun, also a short clip of the Radion pro battery hanging out in flight, making for some laughs.

    With a 100*30cm (39*12") clark Y wing, very cheap and common A2212 1000KV with 1045 propeller and 3s battery, how much the recommended and maximum ready to fly weight? I want to built one but I'm worry about my plane become too heavy :(

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  7 років тому +3

      Don't worry too much about weight, Just put more tape on the bottom of the wing to make it stronger or add a spar if needed or a bigger wing. But that setup sounds great!

    • @renzevenir4853
      @renzevenir4853 7 років тому +2

      +Samm Sheperd (SNRS) Made one! It flies very good. It's also quite strong even though it's mostly made out of mid-density styrofoam but a lot of packing tape really reinforce everything like 10 times stronger than before and I don't even need any carbon spar or support, just styrofoam. I've crashed it several times and the worst thing was happen is broken propeller. No any serious damage. Also, with wing dimensions of 100x30cm and total weight of only 650gr, it give a lot of lift and can fly slowly. I'll upgrade it with bomb dropper feature soon. So, what do you think?
      Two question, which one do you think is better? aileron with elevator or rudder with elevator? I'm actually have all of those controls, but I'm just wondering which one's better.
      Second question is which configuration is better in term of stability, efficiency, safety and anything else that should be considered when making scratchbuilt RC aircraft. Puller or pusher?

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  7 років тому +1

      IRFZ44 Sounds great! I'm glad.
      Rudder steer only works if the plane is stable and has dihedral in the wing. Ailerons are good if you want to be able to do rolls or if your wing is straight and has no dihedral.

    Can a plane equipped with ailerons and a cheap gyro be flown like a 3-channel trainer? In other words, if I introduce yaw with the rudder, will a gyro turn it into a coordinated turn? Said a third way, can a gyro substitute for dihedral?
    I like the strength, simplicity, and efficiency of a straight wing but don't want to burden a noob with staying on top of roll, constantly.

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  9 років тому

      anthony perkins Thank you. A good stable trainer will fly itself, it just doesn't know where to go. And that's the best way to think about it when you're learning to fly. Only make small adjustments to nudge it where to go. When you try to make it do exactly what you want you can get overwhelmed and disoriented and the best thing to do is let go. As long as you're not right next to the ground it will recover and you can figure it out again. Also, long grass fields are good for crashes ;P

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  8 років тому +1

      +SsoulBlade 2 things:
      1. excessive wing bend
      2. Aft CG location.
      1. My wing would bend a lot giving it too much dihedral. I suggest covering the entire wing in packaging tape. One section at a time and then joining the wing segments together with some hot glue and more tape at the seams.
      2. The other thing is that at first I let my CG (balance point) be too far back and that made it fly poorly. It's hard to get the CG far enough forward with such a light weight motor. So I suggest a long nose so that a smaller battery up there can successfully balance the plane

However bear in mind that this project was not to design a perfect airplane for others to copy, but was to show how simple it can be and to inspire others to try and create their own original scratch built airplane. The dimensions listed below were not decided beforehand but were simply the result of "that seems right" engineering.
      Wingspan: 48"
      Chord: 7"
      Body length: 32"
      Horizontal Stabilizer: 16" span
      Vertical Stabilizer: 9" tall

      Hi Samm. Thanks for your reply. I have been designing several planes but of them either not balanced or fast flight. I never managed to build slow pace like the one you designed.
      I appreciate your response. I will try this.
      Hope we share more knowledge

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  9 років тому

      absolutely, I would love any questions you have.
      For slow flight, the main thing you need is a LOW WING LOADING, meaning lots of wing area and little weight. Heavy small wings will fly fast.
      For balance, if your plane is has a normal tail. I always balance it between the front and middle of the wing.

      +Samm Sheperd (SNRS) where did you got that propellor

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  9 років тому

      Damanpreet Singh Hi, I got this propeller from a local hobby store, but I usually buy propellers online. The propeller you use depends on the motor and battery voltage. The manufacturer of the motor should recommend a propeller size for your motor depending on the voltage of battery that you give it. And you can find that size propeller online.
      In general: High "kv" motor = smaller propeller that will spin faster
      And low "kv" motor = bigger propeller that will spin slower.
      and Higher voltage battery = smaller propeller that will spin faster
      And Lower voltage battery = bigger propeller that will spin slower.

      you can make a fuselage out of a wooden dowel, or a square tube made from dollar tree foamboard, or just some insulation foam like I did here.

      Thanks! I have never made or followed another persons plans, I just build off of intuition and improve with experience. I think that airplanes are beautiful in their simplicity of construction and I'm hoping to inspire others to take a shot at it without the need for some other persons plans. This is not a concrete personal philosophy, just what I've done so far.
      But this would fly just fine with a different size or shaped wing or maybe put a V-tail or some ailerons on it. The possibilities are endless! Could even turn the wings around and bam it's a conarded plane! Just move the CG!

      You know what you use to start a gas rc plane also my transmitter came in I mite be posting a vid gotta run to lows and get a light dimmer and a spring and some hot wire

    • @lucastihlman5209

      To finish up my hotwire foam cuter

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  8 років тому

      The starter I used to start the chainsaw is just one big custom brushed motor with a special grippy thing on the shaft. The only way I can think of to easily make an engine starter with out buying one is to make something to put in a cordless drill chuck. I'd have to turn it on a lathe and buy a silicone grippy thing, idk maybe I could cast that myself but probably cheaper to buy one

      @lucastihlman5209 8 років тому

      Dose it matter if I use ac or dc current for the foam cuter

    flying would be easy as long as you dont live in the Netherlands where there is simply no space

    • @SammSheperd
      @SammSheperd  8 років тому

      +emile I was in the Netherlands like a month ago, there's fields everywhere!

    • @frillneckedlizard8529
      @frillneckedlizard8529 8 років тому

      i live near amsterdam and there aren't many fields here and I cant travel very far because I am still 17 and I can't drive a car. all the fields nearby are usually privately owned land where you arent allowed to fly or it is just unclear.

      Tip; Go by bike. There's enough sports facilities with open spaces, Just ask when they're available.

    • @frillneckedlizard8529
      @frillneckedlizard8529 8 років тому

      Noël D it is not that easy to contact a sports facility and they usually will say no anyways, I once tried moving my plane by bike, it didn't go so well
