FINALLY! A long range gel test, Ryan is one of a very few UA-camr that emphasizes the down range effects of bullets. This could be a really genius idea for a whole series of videos. Something that I’m really interested in, MORE PLEASE!

We need a 6.5 Grendel vs 6ARC comparison!! Both are great especially in bolt gun platforms for deer hunting inside 300yds, 6ARC is definitely flatter shooting but 6.5 Grendel carries a better frontal area and more energy up close

@@mgabriel2636using my 6.5 Grendel handload (120TTSX at 2525) vs Ryan’s 6ARC handload (80TTSX at 3080) my 6.5 Grendel has more energy at all distances but drops below 2000fps at 275yds vs Ryan’s 6ARC dropping below 2000 at 375yds, muzzle energy is nearly identical at 1699ft-lb for 6.5 Grendel, and 1685ft-lb for 6ARC, 6ARC wins in the drop category at all distances, it also wins in the windage category but only by .5in at 500yds in a 10mph cross wind

I have the Howa Mini 6mm ARC in a B&C M40 stock. It’s shooting 10 shot groups at 1 MOA with my handloads. 3-5 shot groups are sub MOA. I have the 22” sporter barrel. Accuracy is best when I’m running the can. Great cartridge and I am doing the 108 ELDM handloads at 2685 FPS.

Not being a hand loader I have to rely on factory Grendel loads. All good because this vid gives me confidence in the TGK and the LRX. Lovely… just lovely. 2:53

My 10 yr old even took his first deer with it out of a Recce style rifle. Beautifully capable cartridge; which more companies need to start serving with ammo.

Its a Zermatt origin with proof carbon 1:7.5 22" in a KRG bravo. I took a doe with an 95 gr VLD Berger last year. I have Recently have tested some 90CX with 31.1 gr of CFE223 velocity are avg 3042. I hope it preforms for me like the Barnes LRX y'all have tested. Still waiting on my Texas draw results but hoping to get a chance to get a mulie for the season. Wish you best of luck on yours.

As I run the numbers on it, it does really well for being flat and minimal wind drift-affected. But 97gr Hammer in the Grendel beats it:
      4400ft elevation 59˚F 2.7” optic height
      6.5 Grendel 97gr Hammer 3050-3150fps 24” AR, 2910-3010fps 18” AR
      2910fps
      400yds 2035fps 892ft-lbs 1.7 mils drop / 1 mil wind
      6mm ARC 90gr CX 2780-2880fps 24” AR, 2650-2750fps 18” AR
      2750fps
      400yds 1949fps 759ft-lbs 1.9 mils drop / 1 mil drift
Shooter won’t see the difference behind the gun. Not sure how either bullet does at 400yds at this point.
For terminal performance, the 105gr MKZ 6.5mm is the one to beat in that weight class though. Brutal little boat motor that peels open very wide and stays together most of the time, double caliber expansion down to 1500fps impact speed. Has a really high BC as well for a 105gr monolith.

    This was TREMENDOUS content, guys!
The timing of this video couldn’t have been better. Thank you for shooting at 300yds as well.
I’m a huge fan of Barnes, as Ryan is, however I would argue that the 90 LRX in the 6ARC at 300yds on game is not sufficient. Penetration was awesome but permanent and temp wouldn’t channels aren’t great. I like deer to drop as quickly as possible. I’m not confident a deer wouldn’t run a couple hundred yds on to my neighbors property with this combo.
    90 TGK for me.

Yep , I couldn’t agree more. I’ve got a couple gas guns and then I thought a bolt gun would be nice so I’m not loosing cases out in the field . I went with the Howa mini also but I chose the 20” bull barrel and put it in a Trybe “chassis” from Optics planet . I like the little Howa so mich I bought a 300 blackout and a 6.5 Grendel all with the bull barrel . I started with the 80 Grn TTSX then got a smoking deal on 500 Ct of Berger 87 Grn VLD hunting bullets , then got another deal on the Sierra 90 Grn tipped game king and I wanna say I bought 800 of those . So I’m set for hunting bullets for hogs , whitetail , Axis and whatever else tempts me . Thanks for the long range gel I particularly enjoyed that and would love to see more . 6.5 Grendel , 6.5 CM would be top on my list . I’ve also got a 6mm Remington and probably going with a 6mm GT next z thanks for the informative video look fwd to more

In addition to the efficiency of the 6ARC, one thing you forgot to mention is the typical rate of twist in a .243WIN will generally limit projectile options.
In saying that, the 80GR TTSX, 85GR TSX or a 100GR traditional soft point boat tail would be just about identical in performance to what you tested.
The plus side for a .243 is you can pick em up off the shelf just about anywhere.

I just want you to show me the difference between the 6mm arc and a 243 Winchester in a bolt gun. The arc has a shorter action of course but when you are taking follow-up shots on game do you actually perceive how far back the bolt goes? The 243 is around 200 fps faster than the arc in factory loadings which is what most people shoot. The only advantage of the arc is less powder when you reload. Then you are getting close to a 243 Winchester with less powder I’m just not sure what the big deal is with the 6mm arc other than being in a AR-15 platform.

Self-spotting/sight picture management, recoil energy, overall rifle weight/balance.
.243 Win is wasting a lot of powder with a non-optimum case design. It's too long for what it does, mainly the propellant column is too long with too shallow of a shoulder angle.
Notice that the Dasher will achieve similar performance.

Lever powder is your friend in 6 ARC. 90 ELD-X 3122 fps from a 22 inch barrel. 100 grain 3089 fps give or take depends on which bullet 103 ELD-X closer to 3100 to 3120 fps. never had a pig or deer get back up.

I hope you take the 6 arc or 22 arc and compare it to the creedmoor family in long and short barrels. Same bullets but using powders appropriate to the cartridge. Or just factory loads of same bullet.
Will the small cartridge that generally uses faster powders hold it velocity better than the larger/slower powder creedmoors in a short barrel?

Plenty of other cartridges I'd rather dear hunt with out of a bolt gun. However, I love this calibre in an AR-15 size weapon. Purchased one last year. If I had to downsize to a single rifle for my needs it would be the AR-15 in 6mm ARC.

The 103 ELDx at close range loaded to muzzle velocity of 2810 i can tell you it will work but not hold together that great as the interlock ring is more forward on the ELDx. I would look at the 90grain CX.

Im a fan of the 6 arc. I think its about as close to a Goldilocks hunting cartridge as one can get. From varmint with a 58 grain up to mule deer with 100+grain bullets, at reasonable distances.

Have you guys managed to get the Dreaded Belted Case with the AR yet? That is a learning curve the Grendel guys went through. Getting the pressure up and a little too much gas and odd things happen to that case. It looks like Hornady uses a thicker case wall near the base now, so maybe that will reduce the problem.

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 Місяць тому

I’ve been loading for and shooting Grendel since 2009 and only saw it once when I used too much Imperial sizing wax on one piece of brass in the sizing process. I have seen it with a friend’s 2000s-era 28” AA RLGS Grendel, due to it having too much plug dwell time. This will happen with any cartridge in the AR-15 though when you have too fast of a cyclic rate and the extraction process happens way too early when there’s still residual chamber pressure.

    • @jfess1911
      @jfess1911 Місяць тому

@@LRRPFco52 I knew it was often a timing issue (early extraction) but didn't go into details. It seems that pushing the pressures is often a factor and sometimes just backing down on the load solves the problem.
In the roughly 20 years I have been following the Grendel this seems to pop up every now and then. Bill Alexander and someone with a moniker similar to yours responded to this issue in a a thread a couple of years ago (Sniper's Hide maybe?). There was a very good detailed explanation..

6mm creedmor. The podcasts with Forum give some compelling information that a small caliber would make more sense that th big stuff. Even for larger game like Elk.

6.5 Grendel with 80gr Hammer HT will do 3150fps from a 22-24" AR-15, with 10-12k psi less than the .243 Win and only ~29-32gr of powder.

I said the barnes 80 ttsx would be the one to go with at the beginning of the video. Knocked down 250lbs muleys no problem with it. Full pass through out of a .243 and also my .257wby 80gr ttsx at 3900fps is more than enough on big big deer / bear... only seeing 3225fps out of the .243

Now I'm interested but tell me are they going to go the max grain weight for 6mm in the Arc? Handloaders can get heavy for caliber and thus more power out of 6mmrem and .243 win but I've never seen 120grain dtac for .243 win even out the factory. Yet several reload manuals can go that heavy and you can find bullets to reload or hand rolling you own. The energy for larger game has me drooling if it could be done. I'm crazy enough to believe it can be done.
