A future video question. In the ancient past and before life on land, CO2 was the main gas in the atmosphere. And with that, the first plants evolved and changed the climate by adding billions of tons of oxygen. Why are plants not doing this now? Why have plants not been modified to absorb more CO2? Seems like we should be encountering larger and larger plant species that would thrive with higher CO2 emissions. Is this something we can engineer ourselves?
Dan Rowe I can't answer all your questions, but the one I'm pretty sure of is that we are putting co2 in the atmosphere at an astonishing rate, the plants can't keep up, just like in some of the previous mass extinctions tons of plant spices are going extinct as well. More and more of our fresh water is getting used by us, also we are deforesting the planet whitch hurts land plants, and because of that less co2 is getting absorbed therefore the oceans are getting warmer and that is killing the ocean plants. You'll have to wait for Joe to give a better answer, in not an expert.
Dan Rowe and Isaac Norwood, plants are in fact growing a little bit faster because of CO2, but that is not how the climate works, we released CO2 (and Methane, don't ever forget methane) that was trapped in the ground, plants don't take CO2 and store it again underground, they just use it temporarily while they are alive, when they die and rot, CO2 goes back to the atmosphere, the only way plants help is if the amount of plants in the planet increases, but we still deforestate for many purposes, mainly animal farming.
Well I mean, there's also personal interests, and the difficulty the human mind has noticing gradual changes. (I'm only mentioning this because an effective solution requires a complete picture.)

Why has it taken so long for alternative means of not freezing and starving in the dark to come along? Major efforts have been made to stifle their progress in the interest of exploiting fossil fuels. People don't need to work. People need food, shelter, clothing, entertainment, a sense of purpose, a sense of security, etc.
Just make sure you point out that it's only an issue largely for the developing world. Agricultural emissions as a whole in the US only make up 9% of total greenhouse gas emissions. And animal agriculture makes up less than half of that. Industrial pollutants continue to be the vast, vast majority of GHG emissions in the US. This is one of the reasons why i switched to a Plug in Hybrid vehicle, I love being able to drive on my daily commute to and from home on Electricity knowing i'm not polluting the air with my emissions. Please talk about how income inequality affects the populations ability to do their part to stop climate change. For example, more people are renting houses instead of buying them today. Renters pay their own electric and wouldn't invest in solar for a house that isn't theirs, while the actual homeowner has no reason to invest in solar when it won't be affecting their electric bill. Most of the people on the road cannot afford electric cars, even if they were willing to accept their current limitations. (Also, maybe talk about Thorium as a nearly-zero-environmental-impact energy source?)
I can understand that trying to resolve climate change sounds like a humongous job, but that does not mean that it's impossible and that we should just ignore it. People everywhere should at least take baby steps into finding a solution.

It is *so disturbing* to note that we are doing nothing to stop or atleast slow down climate change, but even more disturbing is the fact that some people don't even believe it to be true. Please folks the thing is extremely serious. We I'm the Himalayas are noticing the scary part of climate change since many years. Our Glaciers are disappearing very fast, many our springs and streams have disappeared already. Please Please Please do something. If anyone from you folks reading this comment don't believe this to be true then come to my town I will show you and you will be shocked.
One way we could help is by changing our habits. Instead of driving to a store, try walking. Instead of going to a job with a car, go with a bus. We could use less water. Maybe even less food(alot of us could do this)

I would like him to address, the percentages of energy trapped by different greenhouse gasses, and what percentage of greenhouse gasses each of these make up. Another good topic of discussion is to expand on the ice core samples specifically if the increase in atmospheric carbon levels preceded or followed the temperature increases / decreases seen in the ice records.
Hey Messheads, Can you please do some shows on grassroots efforts we personally can make to combat climate change? It is something i struggle to find good reliable info on. Looking forward to all the content you will be bringing us.
Start by eating less meat, particularly red meat, and especially cow. Do some research to find out what goes into producing things you regularly use and track your use - don't forget things like clothing. There are "climate impact calculators" online that allow you to estimate your impact, and thus work out where changes can be made. Look around for local groups, as they'll likely have lots of relevant info (try universities if you get stuck). Start petitioning local and national government, and keep an eye on what's happening there too - remember that in a democracy, they rely on voters, so if enough show support for particular idea, they'll have to adopt it.
We learned about the greenhouse effect and climate change when I was in my last 2 years of primary school (I believe that is elementary school in the US, grades/years up until 6, the school we go to before high school) here in Victoria, Australia, in 1989 and 1990. We learned about the causes, we did practical experiments to test various ideas, and learned about effecient energy use for things like designing houses, the importance of insulation and much, much more. So it boggles my mind that there are STILL so many prople who argue against it being a thing that happens, but I guess not everyone of my generation had such a good education.

It's not slander if you use science. It's obvious that he cherrypicked data points from a larger set. This was concluded by Fonselius (1955), and Slocum (1956). But I guess they must be part of some conspiracy to suppress the brilliancy of Callendar's work. Real science does not cherrypick data to support a pre-determined conclusion. Doing so is the very definition of scientific fraud.
Have you even read the paper of Fonselius et. al.? It's actually pretty short, so you have no excuse to not have read it, and I bet you have, it doesn't state at all what you're claiming, as always, misrepresentation, I'll quote some of the passages in it: "The highest vaIues are found in the beginning of the 19th century, but from 1860 the means are concentrated around 300 ppm. This scatter in early values probably depends on the rather Tellus VIlI (1956), 2 crude and incomplete techniques of analysis used during the first fifty years, possibly with systematic positive errors. As the technique improved the resulting values tended to decrease to about 300 ppm or lower. In 1938 Callendar published a paper (CALLENDAR 193 8) in which he discussed the possibility that the atmosphere had increased its CO2 content during the last 50 years, this increase being attributed to industrial combustion of fossil carbon in western Europe. He used the mean values of the LONGEST and most ACCURATE measurements published in the literature and thus obtained a series of values, showing a mean value of 294 ppm in the period I865 to 1900, with no trend, and then an increase to about 322 ppm during the period from 1900 to 1935 (CALLENDAR 1940, 1949, BUCH 1939 a.b.)." "Buch used the same technique in sampling and analysis as we use, a modified form of Krogh's and Brandt Rehberg's technique, which makes the analytical data strictly comparable. The best thing would be to get samples from a network covering a representative portion of the earth's surface. This ambitious program we have not yet been able to accomplish. However, the difference between Buch's and our values suggest an INCREASE of the CO2 content in Scandinavia, but it is impossible to say at present whether this increase is just a fluctuation in the regional CO2 climate or if it represents a steady increase since 1935." "If Callendar’s theory is right the increase of CO2 in the air is now about 10 %. In recent years one bas tried to investigate the CO2 problem by means of radio carbon dating, but very few satisfactory results have been obtained up to now. We know that the fossil carbon does not contain C14. If therefore the CO2 content of the air has increased by 10 % due to burning of fossil carbon, the relative content of C14 in the atmosphere should now be lower than 50 years ago. If we investigate still living old trees the content of C14 in the oldest rings should be higher than in the last rings. This would indicate an increase of CO2 in the air by industrial combustion. SUES (1955) has recently shown that the samples of trees from the 20th century have a lower C14 content than older samples but that the worldwide increase due to industrial combustion computed this way amounts to less than 1 %. This he interprets to mean that the absorption of CO2 by the ocean must be greater than previously assumed." There is no mention of a fraud, only many suggestions and uncertainties, but you will find fraud everywhere you can, you're so pathetic.
I'm so happy this channel is being made. I used to believe climate change was just a matter of time of the Earth changing into another Ice Age and Hot Age. But I know now that's not the case. and we humans are rapidly changing the climate, pumping out CO2 more rapidly into the atmosphere than it ever did in Earth's history. I also want to learn more why the oil industry refuse to believe in climate change and what can we do to finally convince them to convert to renewable energy, and how long will it take to get to that point?

Very good initiative to start a new channel exclusively for climate change and it's working, hope at least this creates a sense of the problems and point out ways to avoid them.
People need to be told what they can do as individuals to help prevent dangerous climate change; telling the population "it's real" isn't enough. What action can we take? What organisations can we get behind? How can one person- without millions of dollars to throw around- make a difference? Please make a video that addresses that.
Greed and overpopulation cause this problem. Country like Japan with too many people, government complain population decrease, but it is a good event, need less energy, less resource, more space, cleaner air, lower prices.
Overpopulation has almost NOTHING to do with this matter. It's the way we DO THINGS. Reducing population to 1850s numbers won't reduce emissions to corresponding levels.
@@VasilyKiryanov If everybody reduces their emissions by half, we will only be back to 1980 level, which will give us 20 years delay of the consequences. There is no way doing everything possible now, will stop or significantly slowdown global warming. I'm not saying that we shouldn't care or do something, just realize that we have put our selves in a position where nature is doing to us what we can't agree to do ourselves. If climate change disrupts enough of global economy, pollution will drop, especially if we get wars so people stay at home with the curtains down and a lot dies from hunger.
We’ve solved the Ozone layer problem. We can definitely solve this, too. Granted, oil companies are way more powerful than the companies producing aerosols and whatnot, but it proves that people can be convinced. Question is, can we be convinced more than non-experts, i.e. non-renewable energy companies?

Hello guys and good luck with your new channel. I would suggest you to give time and emphasis in the video where you will describe how to keep every person individually our planet cool. Most of people accept it as a problem but most of them think that they can not to do anything for it or that hole industrial system is in charge and not every single person. Greeting!
All those in favor of decreasing CO2 emissions raise your hands. Be the first to stop driving. Stop flying. Stop with cell phones that need energy. Use wood for fuel from only the dead or dying old trees. OOPS can not do that. CO2. Live in a coal mine that isn't being used anymore. Temperate down there. A bit tight but it's a start. Get some solar lights and plants. The crowded breathing will give an abundance of extra CO2 to help the plants grow. Good luck.
CO2 is a non-toxic, clear gas and comprises just 0.041% of Earth's atmosphere. Don't confuse environmentalism with pollution. Clean water, clean Air has nothing to do with CO2 - and CO2 is NOT main driver of global temps
Great start overall, and I really like the premise of this new channel. A small critique though: To me, the ice core evidence of a historic “thermostat” presented on this video may not be convincing to an outsider; specifically, it seemed like too much hand-waving of how we can correlate CO2 levels with historical temperatures before the invention of the thermometer, and how we know that CO2 drives temperature, and not the other way around. These were stumbling blocks for me personally for many years, as the more rigorous explanations are not readily accessible to someone outside the field.

I would like him to address, the percentages of energy trapped by different greenhouse gasses, and what percentage of greenhouse gasses each of these make up.
Another good topic of discussion is to expand on the ice core samples specifically if the increase in atmospheric carbon levels preceded or followed the temperature increases / decreases seen in the ice records.

Can you please do some shows on grassroots efforts we personally can make to combat climate change? It is something i struggle to find good reliable info on.

Start by eating less meat, particularly red meat, and especially cow. Do some research to find out what goes into producing things you regularly use and track your use - don't forget things like clothing. There are "climate impact calculators" online that allow you to estimate your impact, and thus work out where changes can be made. Look around for local groups, as they'll likely have lots of relevant info (try universities if you get stuck). Start petitioning local and national government, and keep an eye on what's happening there too - remember that in a democracy, they rely on voters, so if enough show support for particular idea, they'll have to adopt it.

We learned about the greenhouse effect and climate change when I was in my last 2 years of primary school (I believe that is elementary school in the US, grades/years up until 6, the school we go to before high school) here in Victoria, Australia, in 1989 and 1990. We learned about the causes, we did practical experiments to test various ideas, and learned about effecient energy use for things like designing houses, the importance of insulation and much, much more. So it boggles my mind that there are STILL so many prople who argue against it being a thing that happens, but I guess not everyone of my generation had such a good education.

It's not slander if you use science. It's obvious that he cherrypicked data points from a larger set. This was concluded by Fonselius (1955), and Slocum (1956). But I guess they must be part of some conspiracy to suppress the brilliancy of Callendar's work.
Real science does not cherrypick data to support a pre-determined conclusion. Doing so is the very definition of scientific fraud.
Have you even read the paper of Fonselius et. al.? It's actually pretty short, so you have no excuse to not have read it, and I bet you have, it doesn't state at all what you're claiming, as always, misrepresentation, I'll quote some of the passages in it:
"The highest vaIues are found in the beginning of the 19th century, but from 1860 the means are concentrated around 300 ppm. This scatter in early values probably depends on the rather Tellus VIlI (1956), 2 crude and incomplete techniques of analysis used during the first fifty years, possibly with systematic positive errors. As the technique improved the resulting values tended to decrease to about 300 ppm or lower. In 1938 Callendar published a paper (CALLENDAR 193 8) in which he discussed the possibility that the atmosphere had increased its CO2 content during the last 50 years, this increase being attributed to industrial combustion of fossil carbon in western Europe. He used the mean values of the LONGEST and most ACCURATE measurements published in the literature and thus obtained a series of values, showing a mean value of 294 ppm in the period I865 to 1900, with no trend, and then an increase to about 322 ppm during the period from 1900 to 1935 (CALLENDAR 1940, 1949, BUCH 1939 a.b.)."
"Buch used the same technique in sampling and analysis as we use, a modified form of Krogh's and Brandt Rehberg's technique, which makes the analytical data strictly comparable. In the diagram, the values used by Callendar and our mean values are encircled and we can see that our values fit in quite well. In spite of Callendar's CAREFUL SELECTION of values it remains a fact that the samples were taken with DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES and that the analyses were made in DIFFERENT WAYS. Some samples were taken in few minutes in gas burettes, others during many hours or days by slow absorption. No attention was paid to the geographical distribution of the sampling places and to the seasons. If we are to detect trends, we need samples taken by the same technique, at the same hour of the day and at same place for several years, and the analyses have to be carried out with identical techniques. The best thing would be to get samples from a network covering a representative portion of the earth's surface. This ambitious program we have not yet been able to accomplish. However, the difference between Buch's and our values suggest an INCREASE of the CO2 content in Scandinavia, but it is impossible to say at present whether this increase is just a fluctuation in the regional CO2 climate or if it represents a steady increase since 1935."
"If Callendar’s theory is right the increase of CO2 in the air is now about 10 %. In recent years one bas tried to investigate the CO2 problem by means of radio carbon dating, but very few satisfactory results have
been obtained up to now. We know that the fossil carbon does not contain C14. If therefore the CO2 content of the air has increased by 10 % due to burning of fossil carbon, the relative content of C14 in the atmosphere should now be lower than 50 years ago. If we investigate still living old trees the content of C14 in the oldest rings should be higher than in the last rings. This would indicate an increase of CO2 in the air by industrial combustion. SUES (1955) has recently shown that the samples of trees from the 20th century have a lower C14 content than older samples but that the worldwide increase due to industrial combustion computed this way amounts to less than 1 %. This he interprets to mean that the absorption of CO2 by the ocean must be greater than previously assumed."
There is no mention of a fraud, only many suggestions and uncertainties, but you will find fraud everywhere you can, you're so pathetic.

I'm so happy this channel is being made. I used to believe climate change was just a matter of time of the Earth changing into another Ice Age and Hot Age. But I know now that's not the case. and we humans are rapidly changing the climate, pumping out CO2 more rapidly into the atmosphere than it ever did in Earth's history.
I also want to learn more why the oil industry refuse to believe in climate change and what can we do to finally convince them to convert to renewable energy, and how long will it take to get to that point?

People need to be told what they can do as individuals to help prevent dangerous climate change; telling the population "it's real" isn't enough. What action can we take? What organisations can we get behind? How can one person- without millions of dollars to throw around- make a difference? Please make a video that addresses that.

Greed and overpopulation cause this problem. Country like Japan with too many people, government complain population decrease, but it is a good event, need less energy, less resource, more space, cleaner air, lower prices.
Overpopulation has almost NOTHING to do with this matter. It's the way we DO THINGS. Reducing population to 1850s numbers won't reduce emissions to corresponding levels.
@@VasilyKiryanov If everybody reduces their emissions by half, we will only be back to 1980 level, which will give us 20 years delay of the consequences. There is no way doing everything possible now, will stop or significantly slowdown global warming. I'm not saying that we shouldn't care or do something, just realize that we have put our selves in a position where nature is doing to us what we can't agree to do ourselves. If climate change disrupts enough of global economy, pollution will drop, especially if we get wars so people stay at home with the curtains down and a lot dies from hunger.

We’ve solved the Ozone layer problem. We can definitely solve this, too. Granted, oil companies are way more powerful than the companies producing aerosols and whatnot, but it proves that people can be convinced. Question is, can we be convinced more than non-experts, i.e. non-renewable energy companies?

All those in favor of decreasing CO2 emissions raise your hands. Be the first to stop driving. Stop flying. Stop with cell phones that need energy. Use wood for fuel from only the dead or dying old trees. OOPS can not do that. CO2. Live in a coal mine that isn't being used anymore. Temperate down there. A bit tight but it's a start. Get some solar lights and plants. The crowded breathing will give an abundance of extra CO2 to help the plants grow. Good luck.

CO2 is a non-toxic, clear gas and comprises just 0.041% of Earth's atmosphere. Don't confuse environmentalism with pollution. Clean water, clean Air has nothing to do with CO2 - and CO2 is NOT main driver of global temps

Great start overall, and I really like the premise of this new channel. A small critique though: To me, the ice core evidence of a historic “thermostat” presented on this video may not be convincing to an outsider; specifically, it seemed like too much hand-waving of how we can correlate CO2 levels with historical temperatures before the invention of the thermometer, and how we know that CO2 drives temperature, and not the other way around. These were stumbling blocks for me personally for many years, as the more rigorous explanations are not readily accessible to someone outside the field.
