The problem with long firings is the heat build up in the crystal. It will explode with the amount of heat going through it.

My man is not an international gem collector. I assume the laser produced with this will hopefully sublimate some of the ruby.
The ends need to be flat to within a quarter wavelength of the light and parallel to within a few arcseconds to produce the lasing effect. As you can see, his big ruby has a nasty skew on one side that would need to be fixed (probably cheaper to buy a new one than to have that commissioned)

All the rules are peace treaties to not put weapons on it, and some stuff about how to deal with rovers and junk but that's about it. As far as I know, writing on the moon with a laser is A-OK

I never understood why they don't value lab stones as compared to natural stones...I think it's really cool that we can even make precious stones in a lab in the first place.
Most people are attracted to the idea of something thats rare.
Rarity and scarcity. Also because naturally developed gems took so much pressure and heat and time to form and weren’t made in a lab in a meticulous calculated process.
The natural gems also have imperfections from where they formed and how they formed and that makes them more special and unique. More…… “real.”
It's pretty basic supply and demand I'd imagine.
@Darren Murphy I don't like the gem industry but high quality gem grade diamonds, especially ones with unique features like garnet inclusions, are legitimately rare. I would never pay for a natural diamond but that doesn't mean I can't acknowledge that I couldn't go out in my yard and dig one up.

Lab crystals are sufficient enough for any purpose where you might want to use the natural crystals, and, probably, they are even better.
So supply isn't an issue if you are comparing prices to two equal items

And lab grown ruby can be made in almost any color using almost identical processes that are used to make anodized aluminum like what is used for the colored metal on iPhones. And concepts for clear aluminum have been made to be used as near indestructible phone screens

This is a super villain origin story
I remember learning about how lazers work in instrumental chemistry! Basically a chain reaction of absorption and emission of photons happen inside the crystals. Two mirrors are placed on either side of the crystal, one completely reflects the light, and another reflects a majority but lets a small amount through. By doing this, you can filter out the light that doesnt go the direction you want it to as it would be absorbed by the walls while the light going in the single straight beam would keep being bounced back and forth until it exits the partial mirror.
My guess is that the more bonuces (higher mirror reflectivity), the less powerful but the more accurate the lazer beam gets

@@evilMissRune yes, kinda. This type of laser is a pulse laser, which releases a lot of energy in a very short amount of time (around the pico second mark) which is able to blow craters on some materials creating some plasma.
