  • For 25 years, South Africans have experienced the rights and freedoms of one of the most ambitious constitutional democracies in the world. Visit www.sa25.co.za/, mark the occasion and commemorate our constitutionally enshrined rights and freedoms by purchasing a piece of our history in the form of the 6 Circulation Coins and 3 Collectable Coins that make up this historic coin range.
As a part of our ‘Celebrating South Africa’ coin series, the South African Mint has released the Commemorating 25 Years of Constitutional Democracy coin range, to be rolled out throughout 2019. This coin range represents the first time in history that the SA Mint consulted with South Africans to inform the designs that would feature on the faces of our special coins. Interviewing Born-free South Africans, we identified the rights and freedoms that were most important to them, and chose these to be interpreted by local artists who were commissioned to present their ideas for the designs.
    The 6 circulation coins are:
The ‘R2 - Children’s Rights Coin’ features young faces of innocence, reminding us all to value and cherish our youth - the future of the country and those whose vulnerability makes it imperative that their rights be protected
The ‘R2 - Right to Education Coin’ features symbols from the primary, secondary and tertiary stages of development, emphasising the important role that access to education plays throughout our lives.
The ‘R2 - Environmental Rights Coin’ features an idealised landscape, and represents the importance of preserving our natural environment, for both present and future generations.
The ‘R2 Freedom of Movement and Residence Coin’ displays different forms of transport, a bird and a key - all coming together to symbolise the right to freely move and live within the borders of South Africa.
The ‘Freedom of Religion, Belief and Opinion Coin’ show hands raised in sign language appeals to a higher power - representing our rights to express ourselves the way we choose to.
The ‘R5 - Let Us Live and Strive for Freedom Coin’ pictures the queue at a polling station, immortalising the right we all have to direct the government via free and fair elections.
    The three Collector’s Coins are:
R500 24-ct Gold ‘Constitutional Court of South Africa’ Coin
R50 Sterling-silver ’25 Years of Constitutional Democracy’ Coin
R50 bronze alloy ‘We The People’ Coin
