Ben Finegold is hilarious and is just making jokes while being slightly serious. I watched his stream and he is just constantly bragging and people actually enjoy watching that. Crazy.
Making jokes and saying shit on a small stream =/= elitist gatekeeping. Also chess can do without the plebs from qVc and boxbox and so on. Getting into ches s is fine, having opinion on chess or the chess community while you know nothing about chess is not fine. This is just classic fanboy attitude and Hikaru trying to make some money of this artificially created drama.

1) Hikaru is more popular than them. Chess24 is especially salty about it...that's basically Magnus' platform, and I think he just doesn't understand why Hikaru and by extension Chess.com would get more views than the world champion. Over the last couple years he and his team have been trying to grow that platform and they probably thought they'd just have everything handed to them because Magnus
2) A lot of these GMs rely on chess lessons for their income. To be a GM you really need to make chess your fulltime occupation and obviously most people don't have the charisma to be a successful streamer. If new players can come in and learn from one of the best for free, that's their business walking out of the door

I've been loving the streams and have recently started playing chess and have been enjoying it so much!!
I usually agree that "stealing" views from a tournament can be detrimental, they're paying prizemoney, sometimes flying out players, production etc. to make it happen. But I will agree that chess24 is fucking hard to understand.
Like, I'm a layman at chess, I know a few terms, but I have a very hard time following the game at times. I do, however, get that people who are great at the game don't want a "newbie" caster just as I wouldn't want a total breakdown of whatever videogame I'm watching all the time. But there has to be a balance. I had to clip a speedmatch with Carlsen playing because the casters wouldn't tell us mortals what the fuck just happened because they were seeing the 12 moves ahead. At a moment like that, when the match is over, you should break it down for us who are not great at the game so we know what happened. Instead they were just circlejerking how amazing that was, like, what the fuck was amazing I don't know and neither would anyone who is worse than me at chess which would be 98% of twitch. That's not me bragging, that's saying most people don't know chess but would *love* too know it.
Very good point
Not when the tournament GAVE PERMISSION for streaming and then complains....
That is why we have color caster and PBP caster. PBP caster is more to the people who calls out all the move that is made by the players. These caster usually have less depth in game knowledge. Color Caster is the one who gives all the pin point analysis. You should not put two color caster together. If you did that, the chess24 situation would happen.
It seems like chess24 didn't consider the nature of shout-casting at all. What a terrible moves by an elite group of chess players.
Oh I forgot, They are only good in chess.
It happens all the time with tourney streams. But you cant blame the streamers, especially since they are permitted to do that. Additionally, viewers came for the streamers, not for the tournament. There is no guarantee that if those streamers are not streaming, the viewers would come to the official streams.
Most chess players understand that commentary pretty well and would feel like there was no point in watching without it. The commentary showing a few moves in future in hypothetical situations is what explains the reasoning behind why the moves were played. I would recommend watching the games after they are played through channels like agadmator or chess network who will break down the games in more detail and make it easy for even beginners to understand.

Just my two cents:
Saw a bit about this when XQC talked about it on his stream but I feel my comment is more relevant here. I (26M) used to play Chess back when I was about 10 years old. I was never amazing at it or a prodigy but I learned chess in a very theoretical way, and i believe that i do owe at least a slight bit to chess for helping me be a more analytical and patient individual. It's been more than 15 years and apart from randomly chancing upon a chess stream a few years ago about the World Chess Championship (or whatever it's called) between Carlsen and Anand, I actually forgot about Chess entirely. However, Xqc playing chess has actually reminded me of this, and for the past few weeks I've been actively playing online. I don't even understand how it's a possibility that this can be seen as a bad thing. More people know about chess = more viewership = bigger sponsors = sustainable game scene = more children interested in chess = more chess players in the future. Isn't that obvious?
exactly what I thought. How many other games have died just because they were not popular with the newer generations? Hikaru is just encouraging and bringing chess to other people through streamers like xqc who have younger audiences so the art of chess doesnt die. At this point I think the other gms are just jealous
What's your rating if you don't mind? I would imagine you're probably 1600-1800 after so many years of not playing.
Would like to know too, but I'm betting on 1500

Lmfao bringing in new players is hindering the growth of chess what a 5head take
i never understood that take, more people = potentially more exceptional players = more chances at advancing the meta.
the meta is like moores law to an extent, the standards of play only increase when players make gamebreaking discoveries, and these small incremental standards builds up over time. For example compare other esports to their early days to today. CSGO pro players reflexes are more refined then ever, FGC pro players are more refined in game sense and execution. Even in chess, AI is doing the job to advance Chess meta that no human can do and then the pro players try to adopt the behaviours of the AI into their own gameplay.
Its like in their eyes, people who werent already raised "in" the chess world dont even exist, or arent worth considering.
Guys chess24 said this for money reasons. Other than that it was one guy (finegold) who was trolling. Calm down. The gatekeeping in chess is the same as any other game
name a single game that berates new players coming into the scene rather than embracing them? Never seen it in Dota, CS, League, SF5, any other fighting game. These games thrive from new people coming in and spending money to their games they don't deliberately push away new players. You excusing this behavior is wack. nobody real could be this close-minded unless they're actually just daft.
@Chororoar the only other place i see this level of gatekeeping is small song artists. they want the artist for themselves, thinking that if they grow big and get more people listening to them, they won’t “appreciate” it as much as they do, even though it’s just a song, people can listen to whatever they want because they like it. it’s truly a wonder
Hikaru’s comment at the end of the video is like me when my teacher asks me about my thoughts on the class
"We don't know how to position our troops in the middle east, wheres GM Hikaru"
"HIT EM WITH THE BING BANG BOOM AND TAKE THEIR JUICER"
"I'm supposed to be worth 45 million so idk about that" - GOATTTTTTTT

Of the people I played with, the only people who ever shit talk are from india and 3/4 of the people that purposely stall out games when they're losing are from india. it's really frustrating sometimes
@@deathendz That's probably because out of any nation, the most chess players are from India due to the large population, and the culture (India invented chess). So, statistically, it is likely that there will be more nasty players than from other countries.
Even Vishy Anand came on that stream and appreciated Samay for the stream. Not like Elite GM BEN haha
@@deathendz i think you can blame that on the massive number of players that we have, and most are rather new casual players too, and regardless of age they're usually the saltiest of all and don't mind doing petty stuff like that because it's online... i won't be surprised if it's actually natural for some people lol, believe me i was one of them for a long time before i actually realised how petty i was being and stopped being like so... aaaand in no small part because of the thousand instances of the same petty bs i soon encountered when playing other indians
This sack of sunshine lol
The "opinions" of the current chess community are all immature and petty. Hikaru's "bad attitude" where he mutters something outloud when he loses a chess game, or when talks to his opponent after the game to say his moves were bad, is NOTHING relative to online esports.
The chess community has not yet evolved into the online world, this is its baby steps. It hasn't really been exposed to online gaming and popular streaming. Once chess takes off, get ready for an overhaul as it evolves, where primitive opinions like Finegold's will be long forgotten and totally inconsequential, and they will struggle to remain relevant.
Meanwhile entertaining people who create the most value for others: Hikaru, xQc, and a whole host of new Generation Z and their culture will be successful.
Open-minded people will entertain millions, be more unimaginably more successful, and eat the cake of people like Finegold. It is inevitable, it is the natural order. It must feel terrible to know there's nothing they can do about it as the game evolves without them into the current century, because they are too closed-minded and bigoted to change. Point and laugh.
Facts, great point made my friend
Exactly, point and laugh
I am definitely a sore loser sometimes, even though I'm not even that good at chess. I quickly calm down and congratulate my oponent though.
Being a bit angry (mostly with yourself) after losing is just a completely natural thing, and it happens to every person that's every played a game of any kind and lost.
E-sports, for what it's worth, is almost completely scripted when it comes to player reactions. It's fake drama. I don't enjoy it, but I won't judge anybody who does.
This though, this recent chess drama is quite absurd. A bit of healthy anger after losing is nothing at all, being an unsportive winner is worse, but being a gate-keeping elitist is the worst of the worst.
I feel like they are all millenials, but yes I agree
@@Defeshh finegold definitely isnt:P
I personally don't enjoy Hikaru's streams, it's just not my cup of tea, but it is beyond me how people cannot appreciate that what he is doing and achieving with his stream is great for chess, so please keep it up.
Ahh I appreciate your honesty. Thank you for not being one those people that just talk smack about Hikaru for that reason.
I have to agree slightly. As far as pure enjoyment goes, i would not go to a hikaru stream for that. But hikaru brings something that you cant find in other streams, super gm ability. I think the parts of the stream i dislike are probably a direct result of his chess ability and mind. I get the same feeling watching any top player in anything play whether its chess, sc2, rocket league, any game really. Its a part of watching the best of the best.
"League and dota players like new people playing the game" Lmao 😂
When they’re not on my team
Maybe like.... Season 3 of LoL
they do like new players. they dont like losing because of new players. If you look at the community when a new player posts or talks about hte game they are very helpful in getting that player into the game and teaching. BUT the league community is toxic and can not stand losing. being toxic to a bad player doesnt mean they arnt welcoming of new players to the game. they just dont want them on their team. (league is toxic this is not a message against that just that the community is usually very welcoming and helpful and actually outside of toxic smurfs even in low level and bot games people can be very helpful, not smurfs tho)
New players aren't gonna be on your team unless they somehow got to your level which just shows that they are improving faster than you are since they are new and already the same level as you. So maybe it's a wakeup call to yourself that you should try to improve
Once people get to silver/gold, they start blaming everybody else but themselves and most arguments starts from there.
Thanks Hikaru! I love your positivity and helping even the newest of players! Keep up the good work.

Awww man! I was hoping you were going to see this video, he had mentioned that he was making this video in a prior. I've been waiting for this ever since. It's so cool to see some of my favorite streamers all starting to interact and appreciate each others content.
On 3:32 " we dont know our troop position in the in middle east, uuum f*ck we need a GM" That is so freaking hilarious 😂
This only demonstrates that when the Spotlight is on, the rats and bugs are shown.
Watching this doesn't feel real right now...
Recently watched penguinz video and got me binging chess for the last 3 days straight and that's how I found your channel
Spot on great video!
Well, I have to go to the hospital after that intro
"Suspiscious " - Ben Finegold -
Glad you posted this, and I’m glad this guy made this video. I saw it on my recommended and I was worried he was going to stoke the fire instead of breaking down the truth and a “real person’s” perspective on the situation. I heartily agree with him and support his points as well as Hikaru bringing chess to more people. This IS what chess needs.
Now same thing is happening in India with Samay Raina. Samay is a just a commedian who loves to play chess and he is encouraging the people to play chess.
HES BECOMING A REACT ANDY
i have watched and read about Naka for a few years. always good stuff. thanks...
Hey Hikaru! I've been watching you're videos for about a year and just recently taught myself chess. Very fun game! Would NOT have got into it if it weren't for you.
BTW your streams with Levy, Botez, and Nemo are my absolute FAV
Just watched this yesterday and came and subscribed. Youre a legit dude Hikaru!
"Hikaru is the biggest in the chess community by far on the internet..."
Agadmator: And it was in this position Penguinz0 resigned the video
Ah, yeah it's true
The average Twitch viewer has no idea who Agadmator is and I think that's what Charlie was going for.
Agadmator is a legend
@@NeelDhar Who?
I love watching you react to your own reactions on other streamers videos Hikaru. You just nod your head and and shrug as if agreeing with your past self. as if to say "This guy is making lot of sense, you should listen"
