    Another fun fact: Otani Yoshitsugu had leprosy and one time when drinking with other lords, a cup was passed around. Some pus from a wound leaked into the cup and Otani Yoshitsugu was very embarrassed. Ishida Mitsunari, however, still drank from the cup. This meant a lot to Yoshitsugu and this apparently made him respect Mitsunari more than any other lord.
    He fought with all he had for Mitsunari at Sekigahara, despite being almost blind and unable to move on his own at that point in time.

      It actually really bothers me, because the metatron list it as royalty free music by Johannes Burlogh, and while I don’t think the metatron would’ve intentionally ripped it off, Johannes has literally taken privately owned music written for the game-which was written by Japanese composer Yuka Kitamura-without the slightest mention that this music isn’t theirs. Wtf. Kitamura is a brilliant composer and she deserves credit for her work.

    Constructive criticism here, the video feels messy to me, it's inconsistent with the maps and position of unit. Its very hard to follow imo. Look at baz battles (now kings and general) i can easily understand the battles through consistent map. Altho dont just copy his style, you got great style(later down below). And dont add so much "filler" preety pictures and switch it so fast. I get that it suppose to immerse you. And its a good thing, and it works. but dont put too much and switch between scenes so fast. In short i feel its very messy unstructured and confusing. But one thing i really like about your style is you wearing armor. It really immerses you into the video imo. This and your narrative style is your one of your biggest strength imo. Altho it feels very lonely with only you in it. Wonder if you can raise an army to record a footage of an army for a video ;) haha. Or a duel or something. Or maybe a general planning stuff with his vassal in a tent or something. It would be very cool to add some narrative to that shots and tell your content through these kind of shots would be amazing. Hope i dont too much hate from this comment but i really like your content and i wanna see you in your best potential. Oh and that gun and armor, oh fuckin hell they were BEAUTIFUL. @Metatron

    • @ChUwU5
      @ChUwU5 6 років тому +24

      I was about to comment the same thing. Using maps properly is incredibly important if you want people to understand the actual battle.

    • @BIIGtony
      @BIIGtony 6 років тому +18

      I have to agree here. I don't mind the maps, clips and animations but the whole thing was kinda disjointed. Resolving the battle first before actually setting anything up added to that greatly. I got names and numbers but I only vaguely understood who was who and who did what and more importantly why.
      I'm sure if you are well versed in japanese history this is a none issue but for those people the video is also not as interesting because they probably knew the battle to begin with. I even knew a couple names but struggled to place them anywhere specific.

    • @drewblair3953
      @drewblair3953 6 років тому +3

      Seriously, too much editing, no conistency in of positions or forces or groups of people makes it really hard to follow... It's painful to watch this after watching invicta / baz's battles / kings and generals videos. we want a visual representation of how the engagements went not B-roll of yours truly cosplaying and a different shot every 3 seconds.

    I supported the Western army as the side with more traditional values. I saw them as the faction that tried to keep the warriors traditions. And I was further attracted by the fact that there were characters like shimazu, Ukita, Sanada and Otani. These people still faught to the bitter end even when they saw themselves never winning. Specially the shimazu forward retreat cutting through tokugawas main army was awesome.

  • @rightwingsafetysquad9872

    As mostly stated in the video, the respected leader of the west had died, his son was in his early teens and couldnt yet command them. Not only that, but Toyotomi hat actually already defeated Tokugawa, and made him a vassal. However he did not live long enough to solidify his dynasty's hereditary shogunate, just as Oda had subdued nearly all of Japan just prior to his death. It is also somewhat inacurate to call it the "Western Army" they were just the rest of Toyotomi's vassals not loyal to Tokugawa, some were in fact from the East or South. And Ishuda was not the most powerful or prominent of them, just the favored of Toyotomi's son earning him little respect or legitimacy from the re rest of the army.
    Not mentioned was that Tokugawa had sent a secondary force to lay siege to the castle of the Sannada clan. They were only truly loyal retainers of Ishuda, and forced to be entirely absent from the battle.

    Not your best video... a lot of incomplete information, and using images from other sources without crediting them(many of the portraits are lifted from Koei-Tecmo's Nobunaga's Ambition series of games.)
    Otani's troops were fighting those of Todo Takatora, not Fukushima Masanori; Fukushima was engaged with the troops under Ukita Hideie, who led the main contingent of the Western Army. The Mori weren't the ones refusing to fight on Mt. Nangu, in fact they actually wanted to deploy to the field but their vanguard, the Kikkawa, were the ones who refused to move due to a deal Kikkawa Hiroie had promised with the Tokugawa.
    Another key detail left out is the fact that the battle on the Sekigahara plains was only the centerpiece of the Sekigahara campaign; there was battles being fought in Tohoku, Chubu, and Kyushu between many supporters of both sides. A large portion of the Tokugawa army that was supposed to be at Sekigahara was led by his son Hidetada, who had gotten delayed trying to siege Ueda Castle held by the Sanada clan. Because of this delay, his troops didn't arrive until long after the battle had ended.

  • @sumedhraosurendramalandkar4056
    @sumedhraosurendramalandkar4056 4 місяці тому

    A tiny correction - The Battle began due to the charge of Ii Naomasa from the Eastern army. The honour originally belonged to Fukushima Masanori but Ieyasu nd Naomasa had the idea that the first charge should be led by a Loyal vassal of Tokugawa rather than one who was loyal to Hideyoshi. Naomasa pretended to inspect the enemy lines alongside Ieyasu's son and took advantage of his position to charge against the enemy

    For all of those interested about samurai history (Probably all of you) then i highly recommend reading 'The Samurai' by S.R. Turnbull, which looks at Samurai from their inception to their decline, featuring the Gempei War, Mongol Invasions, The Northern and Southern Courts Era, Sengoku Jidai and Hideyoshi's Korean War, it also goes into a fair amount of detail in the Battle of Sekigahara and the siege of Osaka Castle.

    I think videos like this would benefit from a more uniform presentation, especially when talking about the tactics and positions. I, for my part, would be happy with just you drawing arrows on a board. There is, of course, nothing wrong with the pictures and live footage. These certainly make it more entertaining and help to keep the viewer's attention. The game terrains with the soldier graphics, on the other hand, make it, if anything, more confusing. In general mixing up too many styles make things look too messy and somewhat unprofessional.
    I hope this doesn't sound too negative. I still enjoyed the video and look forward to your future content.

    Great Video Metatron!! I found your channel about 4 days ago and I must say you have piqued interests I did not know I had. I have been absorbing lots of information ever since. I came across your vid called "English spelling - a bit mad, but perhaps the best system around." I am From Boston where the Glottal Stop is still often employed. Just learned that term from you. Yourself being a Linguist, do you have any pointers for teaching an 8 yr old girl the intricacies of spelling the English language. My child has wonderful command of the language as far as vocabulary and comprehension. It is just spelling and recognizing where to employ the rules when spelling and reading. I am a chef not a teacher but I do my best. She loves mathematics and is far above grade level there, which I believe is the key to learning myself. I will continue to watch your vids as they come out and ingest the rest of your catalog as time permits.

    Audio Quality 8, would be higher if he was speaking a bit slower, it sounds like he is in a rush to fit all the information within 12 minutes. If he had spoken slower the video probably would have been closer to 20 minutes but easier to follow. Visual Quality 7, above average but the style changes from natural footage to maps of completely different styles and then the use of a tabletop game map, pieces and cards that feels out of place. Metatron in armor, those scenes were awesome. Too many scenes had black bars either horizontally or vertically, making it look like a high school project. Overall, I give it a 7/10. Came from Shad's channel. Keep up the good work.

    hi there, great video, but I want to add a little contribution:
    as you likely know, Japan had a huge oral-only tradition, in the sence that, specially during the sengoku jidai and following years, feudal lords feared that written information could be stolen and studied by their enemies, and this passed on to other parts of their culture, such as certain stories being told to certain ppl, but never written down; Of course, such stories become not so trustful with time, as retellers might add, remove or change some parts, be it because they didn't record it right, be it to give emphasis on something, or even just because, yet, they may help bring light to some historical facts;
    That said, I'm a pratitioner at Myamoto Musashi sensei's dojo (well, not the phisical place, but the style), and my sensei have told that story as well, that Musashi was, indeed, in Sekigahara (though he didn't gave any details), as such, since Musashi's dojo oral tradition mention his participation on the battle, I wouldn't find it unlikely that he actually did, and just didn't felt the need to write about it on the Book of the 5 Rings, given that the Bot5R was written by him to his heir on how to pass on his philosophy, and as such, there would be no need to bring up such subject that is not only irelevant to the topic, but also know by his heir, hence why it isn't written on the book, but ássed on through oral tradition.
    That said, his presence on the battle is only mentioned as how he came to know some lords that would be important to his later life, as well as how he aquired some of his enemies, given that Musashi himself says in his book that the victories of his youth were conquered through phisical superiority and luck, and therefore was not important to the way of strategy he wished to pass on, beign the 2 most iconic points of his life the duel against Sasaki Kojiro and the supression of the christian rebelion that lead Tokugawa to close Japan to europeans and christians alike. On a side note, it's interesting to note that he fought against Tokugawa in Sekigahara, but FOR him against the rebellion, thought it's unkown (at least to me) if it was out of some philosophical duty to protect his country against outsiders trying to restart the Sengoku Jidai, or if it was simple the side that was paying him this time. Musashi wasn't a big exemple of the Hagakure after all, thoiugh his dojo included such philosophy on it's teachings at some point.

    Binge-watch Metatron's videos about Japanese culture, warfare and yokai -> Get inspired to try out Nioh -> Play Nioh and start to research historycal background behind the depicted events -> Gead about The Battle of Sekigahara -> Discover the next day that Metatron made a video about The Battle of Sekigahara -> Watch Metatron's video.
    The circle is complete!
    Also, great collab with Shad!
    But your "Machicolations", Raff, you need to work on improving that!
    As a linguist, you absolutely must get to speaking Shadiversian fluently and perfectly!

    There's been something bugging me for a while about the Sengoku Jidai and it has to do with the ninja.
    So, firstly, my references to the Sengoku Jidai mostly come from Extra History's series a long time ago and one of the things which constantly confused me was their depiction of Hattori Hanzo as a "ninja". From what I've heard from you and Shad, ninja were more an occupation or set of skills practiced regarding espionage and intelligence yet there's an episode where they refer to Iga and Kogo ninja clans almost as independent groups (specifically Episode 5). So if ninja was essentially an occupation, who are these clans they refer to? Or is their entire series just bunk?
    I'd ask them, but the series is over three years old now and it feels odd to dig up things so long ago.

    +Metatron I have a question. I do hope you read this because I'd love to hear your thoughts and to talk to us on what you think about Niccolo Machiavelli and his book The Prince. I was wondering if maybe you could make a video about this one day?
