Yaesu speaker comparison

  • Not exactly a lab test however this may help someone who may be in the market for an external speaker. Sound bites of 5 different Yaesu speakers. The SP-10, SP-20, SP-2000, SP-101 and SP-9000. There are no real winners, some have wider frequency response for a richer sound experience, others are more narrow for easier communication readability.

You know, I love creative videos like this.
Somebody who takes a group of speakers to compare them together because they have access to all of them. What a great asset this video is! Well done my friend!

SP-2000 all the way. I have owned mine for 12 years and I will never part with it. I assume the 9000 is very similar but seems overkill for my needs. The frequency adjustments with the 2000 make things very comfortable as a final touch for various signal types. If I IF Shift a signal due to QRM I can roll the original tone back in with the Contour and SP-2000 combo with ease. Just my take on it and thanks for the comparison.

crazy how each one of the speakers produces an accent. I assume that because they are sold in England.
Thanks for the comparison. I will be getting the 101 or 2k. The 2k sounded the best but it is a shiny farthing.

Wow, I was looking at whether to get an SP-2000 or an SP-101 for my FTDX10; definitely going with the SP-2000, when you switched to the SP-101 after SP-2000 it almost sounded like you had turned the SP-10 back on!

That's the thing - even though the bigger units sound better, it would look odd having an SP-9000 on an FT-991A.

Unfortunately when you played the SP-101, almost the entire play was the person on the telephone, which sounded bad compared to the woman's voice at the radio station. So based on this I thought the SP-2000 sounded better than the 101.

Hi,good interesting video, I brought the Yeasu sp 9000 for the Icom ic-7300, well made solid build speaker, and well made control's 👌, but unfortunately that big empty metal box, enficises and exaggerates the lower frequencies, making it a little bass heavy, the low cut filter will certainly help,I've just ordered a PHITS kit FROM PHONEMA in Germany, its a sound damping kit,all pre cut and easy to fit,to me a purposely designed sound damping kit can only improve a great sounding speaker, the sp 9000 goes very loud and the filters are well worth it,,,,,when I receive the kit I will make a short video,,,,thanks and 73s from Rotterdam.

Interesting to note the current range of Yaesu speakers cost a very similar amount (SP-10, SP-20, SP-30). So there's really no reason to buy the crappy SP-10 unless you have to have a small speaker to match the FT-991.

I like your test, for me I need the SP-9000. Because of the filters , headphone jacks, and the 2 individual speakers for my Wouxun KG1000g. I have terrible hearing so I need to be able to adjust the treble and bass depending on a persons voice. I just wish it had bluetooth, so I could use bluetooth headphones.

Only a 20.00-30.00 price difference between the two at HRO but the 30 matches the ftdx-10. Thanks and 73.

Hi Tim. I honestly can not answer that question as I have not heard the SP-30 in action. However, I would go for the SP-30 based on looks alone, lol. I'm confident it would sound decent as well. Hopefully someone else will comment. Further more, the SP-30 will look super smart next to the ftdx-10 with the flowing lines between the radio and speaker ;)

Have a look inside the box, you will be shocked at what you pay for! all of the units that you have there including the SP-9000 have basic speakers that you used to find in the old CB radios, the SP-2000 abd the SP-9000 does have filters, the SP-101 is a total rip-off, you are paying for a empty box with a CB speaker unit inside of it, if you need good sound out of any of these you really need to upgrade the speaker units fitted with something like the Visaton FRW10N Speaker Units, a much better performance.

I've just ordered the FTdx10 and the "Matching" speaker is the SP-30, but I have no idea how it sounds as there is no information about it considering its new. OK, for those interested or a comparison between the SP-9000 and the SM-5000, the SP-9000 wins hands down by a huge amount. Get the SP-5000 for the band scope - not the sound quality. It sounds very thin compared to the SP-9000. I suppose the SP-5000 sound is designed to be better than the inbuilt speaker, which it is.
