This, and an interview with Hunter by Harrison Salisbury called “Hunter S. Thompson Interview on Gonzo Journalism (April 16, 1975” are the two most lucid discussions by Hunter that I’ve come across in my decades of watching and listening to entertaining portrayals of Hunter and various talks, interviews, and observations made by Hunter of politics, etc. I’ve always found him (when intelligible) to be one of the most knowledgeable minds on the theater of politics, on the craft of writing, and the art of living. Thank you Dr. Thompson for being a person, and oft times a character, the world has needed to help point out the foibles of life, universe, and everything.

He smokes back to back Dunhill cigarettes but never actually inhales, all while drinking Chivas Regal whisky out of a coffee mug with crushed ice. Only hunter s.Thompson can do this on charlie rose and still be respected!!!!! love this man!!!!!!
Raoul was simply a catalyst for Thompson to write with no hold backs. One in the same, seperate but whole. The duality of a man, for us to read and see.
he does truely inhale them and the smoke being absorbed in his lungs not escaping out! just like my gone father doing while solving math equations for me at school
He clearly inhales in this video. Not the whole drag but he does inhale. If he was, like I am now, after the first 10-15 cigs of the day your throat can get a little sore and it helps to inhale slower or less of the smoke at once. You inhale slower to reduce the heat, at least I do. That might be part of the reason he used the plastic or glass extender thing(don't know the name) but I bet he mostly used it to keep the cig farther from his face when he was typing to reduce the chance of getting smoke in his eye(s).
Looking back, I believe HST had become so disillusioned with his own existence sadly, and likely realized after The Rum Diaries was finally released(being the first novel he had ever actually produced). After he was finally convinced to release it, he genuinely felt like this was his last(or first) great work and that he maybe felt like he didn't have anything worthwhile left to offer. As a fan, I only hope that they come across some other unreleased previously unknown work that can be appreciated by current literary fans and future fans of this man's work!
If you read his son's book "Stories I Tell Myself" it seems like he was in a lot of physical pain from decades of coke fueled drinking smashing his body up finally catching up with him
Reminds me of my grandfather, down to the face, glasses, and cigarettes with tar guards. I wish I could ask him if he knew about HST, he seemed so wise, he might’ve...
It's 1998... Hunter: "I think boxing and wrestling are gonna merge some time soon...I think they're gonna come together into some kinda big weird wrestling league" ... it's 2019 and the UFC is biggest combat sport league on the planet. A great writer has a keen eye for the culture and its path.
HUNTER THOMPSON was such an American writer. ALL of his books are Excellent. Johnny Depp did an Awsome job captureing Thompsons likes and manorisms. in Fear n loathig in las Vegas. I REALLY wonder what he would say about the state of EVERYTHING going on in our country the last 10,15 yrs? And with ALL the censorship now? Bet it wouldn't be very nice. I REALLY Miss the guy. RIPsir✊
American expat teaching in Taiwan off and on for 25 years...I could to relate to the motley crew of professionals, losers , martial arts enthusiasts, wanderers, men on the prowl, missionaries, Asian Studies graduates...the "Rum Diary" is a great story for those of us from the continental USA who can "never go home."
Kane Sanders I doubt it. Back then, people didn’t take offense like they do today. I’d bet more on him taking it as old fashioned ribbing with a friend.
No, that would have been Hunter's typical motis operandi. After he died, his wife returned some elk horns that he stole from Hemingway's museum in Idaho (he had meant to return them before he died, but never had the chance). He wasn't a real thief, but part of his antics would include stuff like this.
Comes home from Nam with his head fried by the horrors of war then pratfalls his way through several books and films seemingly drunk on every talk show.. well played sir!
@@aaronneely6040 Hunter did go to Vietnam for Rolling Stone but Werner canceled his insurance after he was in Saigon, things went sideways and he ended up in Cambodia while trying to get back to the US alive.
Maybe it’s just me but I’m pretty sure ol duke just foreshadowed his premeditated suicide over 6 years prior to it happening with his “I don’t expect to be here...” line
His speech is something that you need to get attuned to lol, like a very unique accent... a dialect he created for himself... but once you are attuned it actually contributes to the content of the words...
"Where’s my knife? I want to show you how temporal life is and, goddamnit, I don’t have my tools." "I’m a road man, really, for the, for the Lords of Karma."
He sure did. Hunter said it himself multiple times on camera. He roughly stated that he didn't know who people wanted to see, Duke or Thompson. I think a lot of people think he did all the things Duke did and maybe he did but not to the extreme of Duke.
Now thinking about it as dark and sad as it is I couldn’t have imagined him going out any other way than that. Not because of what led him to do it so much but like you said he was gonna go when he decided it was time to go, not when life decided it for him
Despite his purported wild behavior you have to read fear and loathing on the campaign trail '72 to appreciate what a decent and moral person he was, someone with the ability to get to the heart of the matter or a man and reveal it for everyone to see. His prose is so genuine and soulful. That said, forget the Johnny Depp impersonation which is garbage. See "where the buffalo roam" where Hunter's friend Bill Murray plays him and much moreso gets to the heart of what Thompson was about.
zzGRENDELzz as Anita would always say, the real Hunter, the Hunter only his close family and friends saw, was a true Southern gentleman. Kind-hearted and caring.
Johnny impersonated Raoul Duke, which is an exaggeration of Hunter even in the book itself; having read the rest of his works one would expect you to get this. Oh, and it was a Gilliam movie, if you know the guy you know that he's weird, over the top and makes strange fucking exaggerated movies. That's why Johnny Depp was great in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas
The end of the interview was very interesting for me. When Hunter says,"Hey man it's always a pleasure" the way he said that hit me hard. Wow that was said with love. The tone in his voice and the body language so very genuine. I don't think I ever had a video manifest emotional experience this strong before. I feel like I took a mild drug or had religious experience of some sort. This man seemed so good in that moment. I wanted to be friends with him instantly. Then Hunter puts himself out there and asks Charlie to hangout with him after the show and Charlie gives no love back man. None! WTF CHARLIE! So Hunter asks Charlie to hangout at a club where Hunters' friend Doug will be doing a reading and Charlie says Oh that's tonight? Then silence for a second, Charlie you stupid F! So he doesn't give Hunter an answer immediately. Hunter continues on after that second or two of silence and kind of gives a depressed laugh and then starts to stumble over his words then Charlie cuts him off abruptly and Hunters' body language and tone in his voice seems so sad to me. Like this man really wants to hangout with a friend he sincerely appreciates. He seemed so sad and embarrassed to me at the end and o god his face soo sad :(
Hunter is a human being not following the perverted rules these interview hosts have. He is himself, a man interested in other humans. For these show hosts it's a show - not more.
Nitro Express I've read Thompson and studied the circles he ran in. Anyone who thinks his dark twisted wit didn't come from a dark twisted source is exactly the sort of rube that Hunter wouldn't have had much more than contempt for. He was an undeniable odd bird, but far stranger even than was readily apparent.
i never followed him very closely. i've seen him do a few interviews (generally later in life). might have caught a documentary or some such. he seemed like a strange druggie/drunk that could be interesting at times. but to me, he wasn't of much interest. RIP Hunter, the world needs a few strange ones.
What an honest interview. There are so many layers here to tell you that. The cup from which he drinks being the starting point. The crush of ice, the conservative sips. That is a cup of bourbon or rum. His controlled outbursts and subtle touches of the nose suggest cocaine. But the words... man, the words. Threadbare and impatient to tell us the truth.
@@healthymealthy775 I think it comes down to this - he did want he wanted, he wrote what he wanted, he got paid to do it and a almost never had to punch a clock. Of course, a lot of people have managed all of that, but Hunter also managed to be funny and unique. I think the combination of all of that is what led to his very large fanbase.
He said “I think I kind of paid for it” he was basically saying he tried it was rejected several times so it wasn’t time he had to go on and do all these harder things to get to the point that he was paving the way in fact becoming a literary giant that he is now (then) to be able to finish publish and then make the movie as anyone would follow between his status and monetary gains/abilities at the time. The interviewer wasn’t deciphering well imo.. just listen Sir!
Charlie Rose & Hunter S. Thompson Excellent interview. Charlie & Hunter were both probably drinking during this hahaha. I wish people could still smoke on the news like the old-school reporters
Imagine that, Johnny Depp took making a movie out of Rum Diaries seriously and I actually saw it in the cinema. Now, I am allowed to being sarcastic here - the chemistry between him and Amber Heard was palpable. And we hear about this to this day!

Don't forget the tons of cocaine the man snorted.
This is so much better than the first intervirw where they went over the letters. Thompson is so much more comfortable in this one.
5:16 chewing some ice from that “coffee” mug. Great guy.
Hunter Thompson….. a Beautiful Mind 🤩
This in a interview with Dr Thompson, not Duke
Raoul was simply a catalyst for Thompson to write with no hold backs. One in the same, seperate but whole. The duality of a man, for us to read and see.
This is a fascinating interview
Nice to listen to Hunter Thompson interview
So amazing! Love how Depp actually lived with him for to carry his character
At 20:00 It is very obvious he already though about suicide. It's a miracle he made it for another 7 years
I honestly don't think Hunter Thompson ever inhaled his cigarettes.
Patrick Moore there's an interview where he inhales them
he does truely inhale them and the smoke being absorbed in his lungs not escaping out! just like my gone father doing while solving math equations for me at school
@@randymiracle4958 it's a targard and god are they helpful. Smoother smoke. They catch all the shit that doesn't go in your lungs.
@randymiracle4958LLike Clinton, I don't inhale haha! 😎
If you read his son's book "Stories I Tell Myself" it seems like he was in a lot of physical pain from decades of coke fueled drinking smashing his body up finally catching up with him
"I know I have to come back around.. and I like to get a little rest between trips" - Classic HST
It seems like he got Chatlie Rose high before this.
contact high
This vid made me smile...
he’s got an infectious smile doesn’t he?
You can tell that they are friends and peers, and thinkers.... theyve had this conversation before; drunk in a bar or at a party. Rum. lol.
You're NOT wrong‼️ 🤟🏻 T x
Reminds me of my grandfather, down to the face, glasses, and cigarettes with tar guards. I wish I could ask him if he knew about HST, he seemed so wise, he might’ve...
It's a masterpiece, is what it is. Right up there with the Sun Also Rises and The Great Gatsby.
Soldier's Home! 😎
@7:34 The- WHAT of the Narcissus? 😳
Great interview!!
Amazing interview
HUNTER THOMPSON was such an American writer. ALL of his books are Excellent. Johnny Depp did an Awsome job captureing Thompsons likes and manorisms. in Fear n loathig in las Vegas. I REALLY wonder what he would say about the state of EVERYTHING going on in our country the last 10,15 yrs? And with ALL the censorship now? Bet it wouldn't be very nice. I REALLY Miss the guy. RIPsir✊
I was on a Chivas and coke trip with some hardcore folks for few days. Not for the weak at heart.
As one of those forementioned I will be checking it out. 多謝!
What I liked best was the casual "what are you doing later?".
For some reason it cracked me up.
One of a kind, who doesn’t suffer fools.
Hunter s Thompson is a Master.
I feel like the “where did you steal this from” comment kind of rubbed HST wrong
Charlie Rose has gotta be the biggest tool I've ever laid eyes on
RIP and LOVE
Thank you for interviewing brilliance!
Comes home from Nam with his head fried by the horrors of war then pratfalls his way through several books and films seemingly drunk on every talk show.. well played sir!
Thompson never went to Vietnam he was in Puerto Rico in 1959 did you watch the interview
@@aaronneely6040 He was in the Air Force, too... but it was well before the Vietnam era.
@@aaronneely6040 Hunter did go to Vietnam for Rolling Stone but Werner canceled his insurance after he was in Saigon, things went sideways and he ended up in Cambodia while trying to get back to the US alive.
He was never a true soldier. Got honorably discharged after a few years. Didn't do much bad things but was just very lazy and didn't accept authority
Looks like the Dalai Lama
Yeah... without robe.
God
great spot
EXACTLY RIGHT
with much heavier karma
Raul Duke feared in the 80's and Loathed in the 2000's
Maybe it’s just me but I’m pretty sure ol duke just foreshadowed his premeditated suicide over 6 years prior to it happening with his “I don’t expect to be here...” line
Haphazard Productions
All men contemplate their death.
Man they are such good buddies.
His speech is something that you need to get attuned to lol, like a very unique accent... a dialect he created for himself... but once you are attuned it actually contributes to the content of the words...
What an interview- i shook with the table. And the descriptive afterthought he had
The sign of a great journalist is empathy
11:55 when the acid hits
Seems like it 🤣
Hahaha!!
19:57 There was his hint of suicide from that question.
"You could have made time in the 80's"
I thought basically the same thing at the exact time. Probably my best moment with Charlie Rose ever
The fact that they only got twenty-two minutes together is criminal
"HELP! … HELP! Nobody's helping me…" Hahaha
Extremely intelligent
Even with all the drugs
i would have loved Hunters take on
Trump, sadly we need him now
"Where’s my knife? I want to show you how temporal life is and, goddamnit, I don’t have my tools."
"I’m a road man, really, for the, for the Lords of Karma."
Wow is he coked up in this interview... super jammed up
I've never seen a video or photo where he isn't wasted.
The character Dean Moriarty came to haunt Neal Cassady. Did Raoul Duke battle Hunter Thompson for control of this mortal coil?
He sure did. Hunter said it himself multiple times on camera. He roughly stated that he didn't know who people wanted to see, Duke or Thompson. I think a lot of people think he did all the things Duke did and maybe he did but not to the extreme of Duke.
I love the fact that he blew his head off.
Always on his own terms to the end.
That's crude. But true enough, I think the same.
Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride....understand your sentiment Brother, absolutely true, always on his terms...Stay Strong...🙏😎
That's Hard-core. The fact that he did it and the fact that you love it
Now thinking about it as dark and sad as it is I couldn’t have imagined him going out any other way than that. Not because of what led him to do it so much but like you said he was gonna go when he decided it was time to go, not when life decided it for him
@@MarkMasters... Better than spending your last days shitting in bed pans
I could watch this all day
Despite his purported wild behavior you have to read fear and loathing on the campaign trail '72 to appreciate what a decent and moral person he was, someone with the ability to get to the heart of the matter or a man and reveal it for everyone to see.
Didn’t he beat his wife
They didn't let bill go off the rails like hunter did back then.
A friend of mine calls me 'Hunter', because apparently I resemble him in looks and character.
What an honour!
lmao
Hunter was the sane one. Everyone else is crazy. It's fun to watch how he works around the crazy people and their ideas.
He seemed so sad and embarrassed to me at the end and o god his face soo sad :(
maybe charlie was remembering the accusations of snuff films and pedophilia.
Hunter is a human being not following the perverted rules these interview hosts have. He is himself, a man interested in other humans. For these show hosts it's a show - not more.
Nitro Express
I've read Thompson and studied the circles he ran in.
Read his books.
The U.S. Navy gave Hunter an honorable distrarge...."the guy was great for morale"...
One of my favorite people ever. I admire this man so much.
Why? I've never understood this guy's appeal.
A true American Hero
He said “I think I kind of paid for it” he was basically saying he tried it was rejected several times so it wasn’t time he had to go on and do all these harder things to get to the point that he was paving the way in fact becoming a literary giant that he is now (then) to be able to finish publish and then make the movie as anyone would follow between his status and monetary gains/abilities at the time. The interviewer wasn’t deciphering well imo.. just listen Sir!
Charlie Rose & Hunter S. Thompson
Excellent interview. Charlie & Hunter were both probably drinking during this hahaha.
I wish people could still smoke on the news like the old-school reporters
Exactly understood. Sparring partners snd friends.
Imagine that, Johnny Depp took making a movie out of Rum Diaries seriously and I actually saw it in the cinema. Now, I am allowed to being sarcastic here - the chemistry between him and Amber Heard was palpable. And we hear about this to this day!
