This two-part series was fantastic; so many astute connections made and almost 100% based on facts through dialogue, descriptions and a few just keen observations. I really only had a grasp on Lindelt and Mirrah, these videos really clarified and helped to create a vivid image of the world within and surrounding Drangleic for me. Kudos Dave! MOAR LORE!!!!!
my favorite is the girl who you save from a statue. she is like a vibrant beam of sunlight while everyone else seem so monotoned. she's happy. and that gives comfort whenyou talk to her. also have you ever wonder why the looking glass Knight look that way? the Knight has three woman faces with a throne crown. two male faces as a shoulder pads. both male is masked and one of them is silenced. the woman faces all have tears driping down. on the back there are four wings. and in front its a dragon crest. very interesting design.
Breytner Nascimento Cool, i thought that there was something similar to them. Well both went to some dark place and left something of themselves behind. :D
In NG+ Things Betwixt gets crowded with Falconers with real falcons to boot. I have this super odd idea that because of the bonfires getting stronger each ng and with ascetics. We are not "kindling" the first flame but we are ridding the world of darkness in cycles over and over. And eventually the death of these souls and the ascetics strengthen the fire. So now in NG+, more people take to Drangleic seeking fortune, hence the influx of new enemies etc. It's funny however that as you strengthen the fire, enemies (fully hollowed) get stronger and you (more human) get's weaker. The nature of the curse runs deep in the game mechanics, I'm sure. Just got to figure it out.
Fine work! The lore digging is straight up dialogue and item descriptions. But I particularly like the editing and how you cosplay as what you're divulging.
Interestingly enough, Dark Souls 3 actually answered the question about the armor, since it verified that the stag is a symbol of the Mirrah knights. So Benhart's armor was probably the real deal... Hmm...
Just a heads up, if you look at Benhart's armor versus Creighton's - the stag horn on Benhart's is slightly longer and curved (the one that is showing), indicating the "discrepancy" listed in Creighton's armor details. It's possible Benhart is wearing true armor, while Creighton had some made to imitate knights in order to gain trust. The heads are also significantly different, overall the stag LOOKS different if you pay attention to the details side by side, it's hard to catch, but it's definitely there. Creighton's is more square, Benhart's is more rounded, etc.
Its been said that there isnt a connection storywise with DS2 and DS3. But the Ringed City DLC has Millwood knights who wear Mirrah armor and Ive encountered a desert sorceress. I love this series.
Well done once again Dave. but when are you going to do a behind the scenes vid that shows off your impressive collection of meticulously crafted cosplay outfits? the ones u where around the house.
something odd, but i think it's a coincidence of some sort. everyone knows creighton is a serial killer from Mirrah, but... He uses no shield and the Dragonslayer Crescent Axe, which makes him really similar to shieldless lothian. weird.
DaveControlLive Awesome, for some reason i feel that the souls series is some reminds me of kings field. The isolation, the limited number of allies if any, a sort of post apocalyptic fantasy setting.
I think that the two handed sword play didn't mean one weapon in two hands but one weapon in each of their hands. I think this because the statute that is part of the collectors edition has two swords, one for each hand. Also In the case of Vengarl I think he was simply more savage but not because of having two weapons. Good job, Dave, I really enjoyed it.
You know, I actually originally recorded the Forossan Knight doing that as B-Roll, but as I was editing decided to rerecord it, as "two-handed" to me would you utilize a two-handed weapon. (Hence, a two-handed sword). But, I think it could be argued either way. And you make a good point with the statue... but I think an external company worked on just to make it look badass. It's like - the cover of DkS1 in America, From Software has stated multiple times an external company made it, and they had nothing to do with it other than approving it (unless it was just BandaiNamco that approved it), yet people still think it's Artorias... (Not saying you are). - But, things like that tend to be made outside of the company.
Hey Dave, I've been quite a long time subscriber and I want to give a theory on heide tower. If you travel to the tower bonfire and look directly out toward the sunset, you notice Undead Parish-esqe towers in the distance. But if you travel to majula and look off the "total world death tower" toward the tower of flame, you'll notice no aforementioned structure around the tower. Perhaps some of the hidden magic from Gwyndolin concealing anor londos true form retained after centuries? Or maybe devs didn't notice haha.
Nice video. Interesting that the Hawkring ended up there. Did you also find the wolf and hornetring? would be interesting if they were also in the game.
'war god faraam' sounds suspiciously like 'flame god flann'. There doesn't seem to be any other connection so it likely isn't him, but nonetheless its interesting how similar the two names are.
What is really interesting to me is that these lands probably exist in the world outside of Drangleic. Outside in the real world, while Drangleic exist as some sort of pocket world, kinda like the painted world, but was of coarse not created like it. I feel like that fact is very strange and is hardly looked at.
I've heard this before, I mean in the opening cutscene you are compelled by SOME force to jump into the vortex, and then you just sort of end up waking up in Things Betwixt. It doesn't physically make a whole lot of sense, I know I was confused when I first played that part.
Matt Fletcher Oh also I have a feeling said force might have something to do with Nashandra or the Darklurker. Nashandra might make more sense since she does need someone to kill Vendrick.
I'm convince geisteel is pronounced "JeeSteel" I haven't heard a NPC say it but it sounds right to me, anyways that was a really good video. Awesome Dave :)
Thanks! I guess I'd have to see the Japanese writing of it - so... I'll have to see how they write the Hiragana/Katakana of it. Japanese pronunciation is much more straight-forward than English.
Forossa sounds more like Poland. In war with its neighbors often. Volgen must be Constantinople with merchants Mirrah maybe perhaps western europe. Britain or France. Jugo maybe the middle east, or Egypt
Well there is a Forrosa knight with a dingy cleric in the gutter, the meat cleaver pyromancer in Shrine of Amana, Syan's knights in the castle and the FoTFG, Durgo hat phantom and the elite knight in the throne of want, the ironclad in the bull statue, the wanderer in things betwixt, and the pyro sinners.
If theres one thing i hate about Dark Souls, is that you never get to go to these places and see for yourself the aftereffects, nor do you get to fight the bandits and such. You always come way later after the shit went down.
Is there any thoughts toward the knights of drangleic who's armor represents that of Paladin leeroy? I don't know maybe coincidence or easter egg but either way I cant help but feel like its being over-looked
i know this comment is old but i belive that pharros became the hollow that controls the rotten when you cut of the shoulder a body falls of with a lockstone on it
i have something that you dont include in the forossa lore in the trailer of dark souls 2 we see a lion knight with 2 swords and they fight against manikis . do manikis before was in war with forossa . maybe yes or no but in my opinion forossa fight agaist manikis and they lost and their kingdom fell . but great video
Just question I hope you might be able to answer. Is the story in the game bleak like Dark Souls one? One the things I like about to story was how bleak everything felt, Lordan was beautiful as it was, even still it felt like it was dying and that even if you did mange to finish your quest is was only a band aid and everything would die soon. This was shown in the NPC's story to the locations and it was nice and different I liked it a lot. From what I seen in your videos and others it seems more hopeful and I am not sure I like this, I do hope I am wrong and hope you can tell me if I am,
im not sure i fully understand your question. dks1 story is about equal to dks2 story. "bleak" is to dks1, as the "curse" is to dks2. so dks2's story seems easier to understand. also, some npcs in dks2 give great info on the main story, while npcs in dks1 seem to give very little. all in all, im very pleased with the dks2 story. it explains alot, yet leaves huge openings for speculation, especially in regards to this being a sequal :) hope i helpd
What I mean by Bleak is that everything your doing in Dark Souls 1 is pointless, The world itself is dying, 95% of the NPC's you ether kill or they don't find what they are looking for. There is no hope in Lordarn. Even the endings play on this, Linking the fires feel like your just putting a bandaid on a broken bone and soon even this will not stop the age of fire from ending., Or you don't link them and the age of fire ends right there, Then you look over at Dark souls 2. And they story is so much more hopeful, You can cure the curse it will be hard but you can. Yes this kingdom fell but another will rise to take its place. The NPC's all mention how kingdoms formed and fell here countless times, The theme's of death and rebirth are all over Dark souls to and it make it feel like this place has a chance still and even the end of the game plays on this. There is hope. Basicly Dark souls 1 your watching Lordarn and the age of fire die out and no matter what you do it will happen. Its Bleak and Hopeless Dark Souls 2 it just feels like your clearing for a new kingdom to rise from the ashes of this one. Giving you hope for the future.
Rob Cormier its not really hope... dks1, yes the fire will eventually fade no matter what. but what dks1 didnt tell you was that (in dks2) in the dark, people will find a way to ignite a new flame. this flame will too burn out, making everything meaningless. "vanity of vanity. everything is vanity. like chasing after the wind." i will admit i love how every npc's story ends sadly in dsk1. even frampt would have to go find another dude to burn. dks2 doesnt seem the same, but who knows. maybe there are more to the storys we havent found yet
I've been trying to get into dark souls but I wanted to learn the lore a bit more so this series has really helped me a lot. I'm a little confused on how dark souls 1 and 2 are connected though. Any help anyone can provide with this?
Even though I have played the souls series since dark souls 1 came out, I haven't really looked into lore. From the games, there are many differences, and they aren't really connected. Though, dark souls 1 and 3 are linked a lot.
There aren't many connections, but there are some. The most obvious one being the end goal: to re-light the first flame to stop the curse of the undead, which is the case for both games. Also, DS2's final boss, Nashandra, is thought to be a piece of darkness that was created when Magus, a powerful and central boss from DS1 who wanted to usher in an age of dark, was defeated (Nashandra also wants to usher in an age of dark btw, albeit possibly for different reasons). There are other ideas as well. When you defeat the 4 'great soul' bosses from DS2 in New Game Plus, they drop extra special souls besides there own. It's largely thought that these souls are the souls of past bosses from DS1 that still exert their power.
+Last Chance Breaker! interesting. the 2 games seemed so different in lore and scenery. thanks for the info! I'm waiting for the next steam sale to get the game so this'll help me understand it better.
Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of DS1 and co-director of DS3, didn't work on DS2 beyond having a supervising role, so the lore is mostly devised by that game's directors. There are references and characters from DS2 in DS3, but the majority of direct callbacks are to DS1. DS3 also explained some things like said above, but also made some retcons. There's a character in DS2 who devised some special pyromancy spells and in DS3 the description of this pyromancy says it came from the Profaned Flame, a concept made for DS3. Which makes for some nice speculation about that character's origin. In one of the endings of DS3, we can choose to do something similar to what the main antagonist in DS2 wanted. Said antagonist also had a portrait in a city location in DS3, as well as paintings of DS2 locations in the same building, which adds to some speculation of what she was up to prior to the second game. As for direct DS2 lore, the kingdom of Drangleic seems physically cut off from the rest of the world, possibly a doing of the main antagonist to help funnel in pawns for her scheme. The king of the land and his brother studied the nature and use of souls, producing artificial servants after he raided a land of giants and took something special of theirs. The king also created a special throne that had the power to manipulate how the flame being linked affects the world itself. When he discovered the plans of the antagonist, he sealed it off, and exiled himself to get away from her, so he couldn't be used for her plan. He eventually finds a way to halt the curse of undeath on a person's body, but does so too late to use it himself and tasks the PC with finding three crowns that can cure that person alone. His brother disappeared, but we can encounter him in-game, he is trying to find a way to escape the cycle of Fire and Dark, which has affected the world since before the first game.
Strange how Gilligan seems to be Irish. I'm fairly certain "Eejit" comes from over here in Ireland unless someone from the ancient land of fufuffhufba... Said it first.
This two-part series was fantastic; so many astute connections made and almost 100% based on facts through dialogue, descriptions and a few just keen observations. MOAR LORE!!!!!
Terra before you ask for more you have to do mome by yourself you subscribers want it from you and surely him but you know what i mean
=)
They're coming. I'm working on a 10 Things video now and then a lore video on Aldia to follow. You can expect them both within the next 10 days.
my favorite is the girl who you save from a statue. she is like a vibrant beam of sunlight while everyone else seem so monotoned. she's happy. and that gives comfort whenyou talk to her.

These old lore videos just slap different man, so much nostalgia, great content and the editing remains masterful to this day
DaveControlLive "As would I." Instant fave.
Sometimes you have to be honest with yourself.
This deserve more attention
Thank you so much. :)
"Renowned for their nimble two-handed wordplay"...
Part of me wishes I'd just used that take.
"..as would I' as would we all, dave, as would we all
Anyone notice how Similar Vengarl is to Guts from Berserk? He even sells the ultra-greatsword, which is basically the Dragonslayer.
Actually its funny that Enb said something about Berserk influences in Dark Souls series :)
Breytner Nascimento Cool, i thought that there was something similar to them. Well both went to some dark place and left something of themselves behind. :D
I think the falconers are a nod to the Band of the Hawk from Berserk.
there is a video out there, i think it was called:
dark souls berserk references,
may have a look ;)
Love the Kings Field music in this video. :)
It's such a great soundtrack. :)
In NG+ Things Betwixt gets crowded with Falconers with real falcons to boot. I have this super odd idea that because of the bonfires getting stronger each ng and with ascetics. Lore time for Dark Souls 2 means, roll a big joint and continue the age of high!
Fine work! The lore digging is straight up dialogue and item descriptions. But I particularly like the editing and how you cosplay as what you're divulging.
For these particular lands - there's not too much else you can do, but glad you still enjoyed the presentation! :)
I really need to pay more attention to item descriptions. That corrosive urn description is fascinating.
Keep up the good work Dave! I'm really enjoying your dark souls 2 content! (:
are the falconers a reference to the band of the hawk from berserk?
yes
really goood as always. god i love the souls series.
I just love these videos)
I love the King's Field music. Brings back memories ...
I want a DLC taking place in Volgen
Gilligan is LadderGuy from Doraleous and Associates
Gotta say, Forossa seems like a badass place. Definitely my favourite of the lands surrounding drangleic
"as would I" hahaha
great as always :D
Glad you enjoyed this one as well! :)
Great job compiling the stories, dude. ^^
Interestingly enough, Dark Souls 3 actually answered the question about the armor, since it verified that the stag is a symbol of the Mirrah knights. So Benhart's armor was probably the real deal... Hmm...
love the use of kings field music in the back ground, the spiritual predecessor to dark souls.
Even more? Hell. Yes.
Very well put together. Great video. Everyone should be pumping out lore videos very soon. I'm excited.
Just a heads up, if you look at Benhart's armor versus Creighton's - the stag horn on Benhart's is slightly longer and curved (the one that is showing), indicating the "discrepancy" listed in Creighton's armor details. SO GOOD, NEED MOAR !!
Just stated watching ur vids today and i must say they r very in depth and informative Il sub and keep watching keep up the gd work
I swear I would bring a rope, tie up the sorceresses and make them love my lightning mastodon halberd's plunging thrusts everyday.
What
I know this was 5 years ago but what the hell
Lanafir sounds like it's Zena the description is about the same and even fulfill the same role as it did in dark souls 1
I agree! I equate the two.
Nice work! I subbed and am excited to see future content!
Thank you! :)
I have more lore videos planned, and intend to work just as hard on them!
When I can afford the outfits you deserve.
Maybe lothian beheaded vengarl and left to become dragonslayer aka ornstein in heide's tower which nicknamed the shieldless?
omg that kings field music, so good
At 5:50, does that statement read not describe the band of the hawk, of berserk?
Matthew Parenteau we need more lore on Forossa
Dave, I love you.
That music in the beginning in the background sounds like soul reaver the legacy of kain
I strongly believe that Lanafir is Zena, although there is no proof, it just seems to make sense.
I agree with that.
DaveControlLive
would you maybe do a map of the different lands and compare it with the DS1 map? ... i think there will be more then 1 coincidence ;)
something odd, but i think it's a coincidence of some sort.
everyone knows creighton is a serial killer from Mirrah, but...
He uses no shield and the Dragonslayer Crescent Axe, which makes him really similar to shieldless lothian. weird.
.....is that a king's field theme i hear??? 0:27
You know it!
It seemed appropriate for Forossa.
DaveControlLive
Awesome, for some reason i feel that the souls series is some reminds me of kings field. The isolation, the limited number of allies if any, a sort of post apocalyptic fantasy setting.
Bellum Blade Well, they were made by the same developer. (FromSoftware), so there are several similarities! :)
Iv never heard of these places in dark souls must of gone over my head. Every time iv met an NPC there from mirra
The Serpent man (from DS1) are enemies of forossa?
whats that helmet at the middle right at 7:40?
I think that the two handed sword play didn't mean one weapon in two hands but one weapon in each of their hands. I think this because the statute that is part of the collectors edition has two swords, one for each hand. Whats that armor hes wearing at 6:08?
Feared for their nipple two handed sword play
"As would I." the sorceress must be real HOT to you bro *WINK* *WINK* getit?getit?
Also the Band of Falconers is direct nod to the Berserk's Band of hawk.
Hey Dave, I've been quite a long time subscriber and I want to give a theory on heide tower. I think it's likely the devs didn't notice, or didn't have the processing power, haha. But who knows, I'll have to check it out myself. :)
Sounds good man. Thanks for the reply and interest.
And also I really like Vengarl because of how much he reminds of Guts from Berserk
Wish we had more on lanifir!
keep it up, good stuff
Nice video. Interesting that the Hawkring ended up there. Did you also find the wolf and hornetring? would be interesting if they were also in the game.
Sadly, they aren't in the game. Just Leo and Hawk.
Too bad, would have been nice to see these too in it.
Crescent Ax finding place+ story of Lothian= failed attempt at Ancient Dragon
Whats with Lion Knight Albert in lothric ? And why didnt he fought against that black hand instead teaming up with him and the mage ?
I think drangleic used to be vinheim because the ligering rings description says somethin like that I cant remember though and i couldnt be bothered
'war god faraam' sounds suspiciously like 'flame god flann'. There doesn't seem to be any other connection so it likely isn't him, but nonetheless its interesting how similar the two names are.

Matt Fletcher
also, that vortex you're talking about is kind of Covenant of Dark vortex. so may be there is some connection in it
***** that's most probably not true, but it would be nice and very interesting indeed
Best videos!
When he's describing the clerics of Volgen I kept thinking of all those asshole arbiter spirits
;_; wah firelink shrine music... I wanna go back already
Japanese pronunciation is much more straight-forward than English.
yeah you're right, I'll keep an eye out for it.
Dlc should give more info on tis lands or maybe be part on one of then
Well at least now we know who out of creighton and pate who was the one to trust
Forossa sounds more like Poland. In war with its neighbors often.
Volgen must be Constantinople with merchants
Mirrah maybe perhaps western europe. Britain or France.
Jugo maybe the middle east, or Egypt
did anyone notice the statues in forest of giants when you fight the purser look like jugo??
What was that sword you Forrosan knight was wielding?
Can you do lore on some of the Black phantoms in NG+?
If I can come up with enough interesting things to make a lore video about them.
:o i want to know more about lanafir.
Do more lore like the bell covenant um the little guy
So if maughlin moved from volgen does that mean he is still human and hasn't been cursed?
Hmm...I wonder if the Old Dragonslayer has anything to do with Lothian...
How much lore is there of Straid? All I know is he made those element and status resistant 4 in 1 rings.
There's not too much. I think most of it can be gotten from either himself, the items/spells he sells, or his outfit.
What happened to Pharis?
He became a Rat Bro 4 LYFE.
...
I'm honestly not sure. :-/
:-( my absolute favorite lore hero
Thanx:-)
i know this comment is old
but i belive that pharros became the hollow that controls the rotten
when you cut of the shoulder a body falls of with a lockstone on it
Forossa = Sparta... is what i am getting here xD
forassa is the most badass land in dark souls series period
Except spartans actually used shields, but yeah, pretty much.
In know this is old but. No its not.
I always wanted giligans armor .-.
What sword did you use in the beginning of the video?
It's been a while... but I believe if I remember properly it was simply a normal longsword.
Oh lol! Looked like a different sword at first glance.
as would I!
where was that ugly ant 6:32
Ikaros Disavow Its in gutter,on the way to the black gulch there will be holes in walls (at least at the way i took)and in one is that ant.
Wait... Wasn't Gwyn's rejected son the god of war? Does that mean that it might be Faaram?
You never know, could be!

Rob Cormier Yes, it's extremely bleak in the exact sense you're thinking/hoping.
As TerraMantis said, I still find it to be a bleak story. But, that's my interpretation of it, I suppose.
Why where these guys soo big and were so small?
no olaphis?
Song at 8 minutes?
Is this console footage?
yes. pc version is to be released apr 25

As Cj pointed out - PC version doesn't release until April 25th.
I'm waiting for the next steam sale to get the game so this'll help me understand it better.
tena2013 You're welcome! There is more, but it'd be difficult to explain without references so you'd need to play through the games anyway xP.
What is name of sword u used with forossa set
It's been a while... but I believe if I remember properly it was simply a normal longsword.
ahhhh id give literally anything for the visible helm of aurous, its the only part of the set i dont have yet :/
Well, at least you're not missing just the pants.
That'd just be awkward.
dave, are trying to tell me you don't go pantless during your dark souls play throughs...? now THAT is a little awkward
Strange how Gilligan seems to be Irish. I'm fairly certain "Eejit" comes from over here in Ireland unless someone from the ancient land of fufuffhufba... Said it first.
You forgot Giraand
The lore isn't as grand as it was in Dark Souls, and that sense of purpose/urgency/drama is gone, but there's still a deep lore to this game.
Did he say peace lol
