Firefighter of the Year - Garrett Hardwick

Garrett Hardwick has dreamed of being a first responder for as long as he can remember. Now, as a volunteer firefighter for Polk County Fire District No. 1, he is living that dream. Attracted to the family-like atmosphere, Garrett believes that fostering a positive culture within the fire service is crucial.
"There's a certain level of comfort you get when you're in certain situations with other people," Garrett said. "You feel closer to them, you feel like you can share more, and you have another shoulder to lean on if you need it."
In March 2024, Garrett was honored with Polk Fire's Firefighter of the Year Award for his bravery and dedication to service.
Garrett's journey is a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective effort, showing that dreams are best realized when shared with others.
"There are countless captains and other officers who helped get me to this point," Garrett shared. "It wasn't just me; it was them."
