  • I thought I’d share a very typical day-in-the-life of a UK 1920’s property renovation. We’re up against it time-wise and it’s time to get all remaining cables under the floors before carpets go down. Mainly running a/v cables today and lots of floorboards to put back down!
    Here’s the full 1920’s semi renovation playlist:

    Great work sir! My apologies in advance if I missed it in this video while you were on the subject of fixing and repairing floorboards. Did you decide what to do about that floor joist that some numptie "notched out" near to where the toilet pan was originally fitted in the bathroom? IMHO that looks like a bit of a pig to repair and/or to put right to your high standards. As a DIY (that's Don't Involve Yourself) duffer myself, I am in full admiration of your investment in time, money and materials in your property. It is all looking great. I bet you have already fitted the carpets by now, but I had to do this sort of thing in my dining room prior to sale and i recalled my marketing days when I used to do exhibitions. So I asked the carpet company to supply Exhibition-Grade carpets and I think it was something (even in 1018) of only a tenner per metre and 4metre width, so £2.50 a square metre !!!!
    As regards skirting boards that you will remove later, why don't you avoid anything secure for fitting and just use the double sided tape they use to secure those exhibition-grade carpets down or even Blu-tak !

    You’re missing out on Atmos. Pro-logic is in the 70’s compared to Atmos. Also your projector can be wifi. Pretty sure 4k is supported. The HDMI cables must be high speed too. Otherwise you’ll be digging it all up in a year 🤷🏻‍♂️ also, you can get HDMI senders so no need to add cable runs. Modern ATMOS systems use a mic to calibrate the speakers so don’t worry about your centre speaker. I’m using an STR-DN1080 and Harmon/Kardon surround with optional ceiling speakers (not fitted yet) and even though the system is oldish it’s still Sony’s best seller.

    Very good episode!
    I learned a few things from this one.
    Firstly, having a whiteboard with all your To Do's listed is a very good one, especially in a more involved renovation project.
    All too easy to finish your floor and have carpet or laminate down and then thinking oops, I should have the HMDI to that corner and it isn't.
    Also making the small inspection hatches in the floor boards is a great idea.
    One thing I don't do in my renovation project is running any kind of data wiring tied to mains cables, although cat 6 is shielded well tying them to 240V cables can still have impact on your signal quality, I rather run my cat 6, HMDI etc. separated from mains wiring with a foot or so between them to minimise electromagnetic interference.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  3 роки тому +2

    Planning: The detail on your big whiteboard is impressive. You've run cabling not only for the audiovisual equipment you want, but also for things you might want in the future! You've stockpiled all the materials you expect to need. Belt and braces: The ends of the cables have protectors, but you added tape "just in case". Neatness: When you create a bit of dust, out comes the vacuum! And I have no doubt that the inspector will approve - and admire - your drain work.
    I suspect that the temporary work you will do to make the house livable will be of better quality than a typical contractor's finished product. ;-)

    Plasterboard adhesive foam works well with the skirtings. Get a nice tight to wall fit with a quick bond time but comes off nice and clean with a scraper slid down the back

    this video should be sent out to all spaks to teach them how to do this properly.
    not only did you use a sweeping brush but also a vacuum
    no hammer was used to make holes or butcher floorboards out of the way
    all floor boards screwed back down and supported on each end
    and the craziest thing of all. you picked up the rubbish and put it in a bin rather than into a corner or down under the last floor board.
    great job andy. coming together now.

    Recommendation not to cable tie the T&E cables together, otherwise you need to consider grouping factors which may mean the circuits need to be de-rated.

    • @GosforthHandyman

      They're just very loose, not tight at all, just to stop the cables snagging themselves when floorboards are going down. 👍

    Interesting about having to take off the baseboard (skirting) later... over here in north America (at least in my experience) we typically put the baseboard on before the carpet and leave it up 1/2" to allow the carpet layer to tuck it in over the "tackless" strip. This way, we can spray or paint the base, in place, before the flooring and then only have to touch it up later. Good to see lots of progress and congrats on getting in! Now getting settled will take a bit eh.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  3 роки тому +2

      We don't generally leave a gap here since you get all sorts of rubbish being blown up from the sub-floor and it tends to make the edges of the carpet dirty. Tack strips! Interesting... Gripper Rods over here. 👍😁
