I remember how strange it felt seeing the Sega Logo in an intro and then Sonic running on a Nintendo device. Only ten years before this was unthinkable.
Sonic Advance 1 focuses on platforming more than speed. Sonic Advance 2 focuses on speed more than platforming. Sonic Advance 3 combines the platforming and speed, but it is normally simple to tell when to go fast and when to stay on your toes.
The GBA was such (and is) such a fantastic platform. It really carried the torch of classic and colourful 2D gaming in a time when the mainstream gaming world had largely moved away from that.
Jet Set Radio GBA is hugely underrated. It was made by Vicarious Visions using the same engine they used in their highly critically acclaimed Tony Hawk GBA games. It's really good and captures the spirit and feel of the original. The character animation is fantastic too, mostly because the characters are 3D models instead of sprites.
It could have easily given Fire Emblem a run for its money. Sega had a decade to capitalize on it before Fire Emblem came to the West and they squandered it
There was also a NiGHTS spinoff on the GBA! It was called NiGHTS Score Attack and the graphics were so much better than you’d expect from a handheld in that generation. You could download it on your GBA via a GameCube connection if you had certain Sega GameCube releases. In a way, it was kinda like DSiWare before DSiWare.

My first exposure to Astroboy (Tetsuwan Atom) was a TV show from the 1960s. I didn't see much of him after I grew up, until the video games and the CG movie.
I think Sega should bring those franchises back: Virtua Fighter Panzer Dragoon Sonic Sega Rally Outrun Crazy Taxi Jet Set Radio and many more. Believe it or not there are many Sega fans (I’m one of them) who want sequels for those games.
I think we’ve had enough of Sonic for now. (My bad) But I’ve heard others and myself want the other franchises back. And at the very least we’re getting the Panzer Dragoon remake and Streets of rage 4 so it’s a small start
mechashadow.I want the others to come back too and I can't wait to play them...but if Sonic were to leave,I'd be depressed for weeks on end.I think it be best if Sega gives Sonic a 2-3 year break.
Another great video. I love the GBA and the Sega releases on it. I also loved Astro Boy, Gunstar Super Heroes and Virtua Tennis. In fact, Virtua Tennis was one of my favorite handheld tennis games, until Virtua Tennis on the PSP. I fondly remember getting the Japan release of the GBA w/Final Fight, and just being totally blown away by how great everything looked. The link cable and download play was awesome too, w/Mario Kart, F Zero, etc. That Mario Bros Deluxe game that came out on the GBA is my favorite iteration of the Mario Bros arcade game as well, and wish it'd make its way to the Switch [and playable in same console multiplayer]. Portable Guardian Heroes was awesome too! Good memories.
Sonic Advance 3 is my personal favorite GBA game. Yeah, at a glance it looks the exact same as Sonic Advance 1 and 2, but its unique partner system alone makes it stand out. Plus, the level themes in Sonic Advance 3 such as Cyber Track and Chaos Angel are just amazing, which puts it above the rest to me.
There's definitely a special place in my heart for SEGA's GBA output. The Phantasy Star Collection was actually my first experience with the series, and I remember how excited I was to get three new (to me) retro RPGs. Also, I absolutely ADORE Gunstar Super Heroes, I honestly love it even more than the original game. And I've always wanted to set up two GameCubes with Game Boy Players on two TVs, running Shining Soul II, and link them together for big screen multiplayer
Streets of Rage never saw the day of light on the GBA. The SoR series was one of the franchise's that put Sega on the map not only that but put the entire beat em up genre on notice.
Capcom made a lot of great adaptations of some of their Arcade and Snes games to the Game Boy Advance. ...Sega on the other hand ...Yeah. Which is weird because most of the games they made specifically for the GBA were pretty good. Also in terms of 3D racers, I think EA did a better job with some of their Need For Speed games.
I really liked the GBA a lot as it was the right system at the right time for me. After SNK and Sega both had their issues, and with 3D games going in a direction that wasn't to my liking, the GBA was just what I needed. It was probably the system I was most active about buying games for when it was current. I learned of a few things I didn't know about here. I've played Astro Boy, but didn't love it as much as others. I'm going to give that one another shot, I think. I'm also going to revisit Sonic Advance. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it either. But my perspective may be different now. It's something to look forward to. Good to see this list of titles. A shame about certain ones like Shinobi and Altered Beast. Gunstar Super Heroes was a blast, though.
Speaking of SNK and SEGA, apparently Dimps was run by someone from SNK who worked on Sonic Pocket Adventure, so SPA (just portable Sonic 2 with downgraded S3K music) is technically the first Sonic Dimps game.
I've played Gunstar Super Heroes to death back when it came out because I loved the way you could switch between three shooting styles on the fly using B and/or the R buttons. Anyway, I don't think I ever ONCE noticed that hidden area at 6:24, like WHAT.
I bought Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon a month ago and I’ve been playing at least one battle a night on my GBA AGS-101. I can confirm this remake is absolutely awesome.
@@zackschilling4376 Here in EU the PAL version is much more valuable unfortunatelly...I pick it up in one local retro shop within the UK last year for £40 complete in box.
My favorites from Sega's GBA liabary were the two SHining SOul games, SHining Force, and the Phantasy Star collection. I wish Sega would re-release more games in the current era. The Sega Ages lineup was fun as was the Sega Collection but I think Ages ended far too early and should have included a lot of Saturn and Dreamcast era games plus more Master System games and some Game Gear games.
-Astro Boy is legit one of the best games on the GBA period. -Shining Soul 2 was still pretty enjoyable solo, but Shining Soul 1 absolutely needs multiplayer to be any good.
Not quite Shining Force games but the Golden Sun titles were made by Camelot Software Planning, the studio behind many of the games in the Shining series (and I say the best of them too).
Being a lifelong unashamed fan of RPGs, I make no secret of the fact that Beyond Oasis is my favorite game for the Genesis. It boggles my mind how it never came to GBA. It baffles me even more that to this day, it has STILL never received any kind of re-release.
It has been re-released though. It's on the mega drive/genesis collection for steam and every console, and it's on the mega drive/genesis mini (at least the UK one). I've just started playing it on my Switch, it looks fantastic on a big modern TV with the HDMI. A very pretty game
@@ReaverPrime I dunno, I think it looks beautiful as it is. And I much prefer beautiful pixel art to cartoon sprites like the Shantae game or the Ducktales remake. The sequel to Beyond Oasis on the Saturn looked gorgeous too. They need to re-release _THAT_ game as the only way you can play it currently is to get a saturn and a copy of the game. They shouldn't remake them. They should make a new sequel. With pixel art

iPlaySEGA It’s an absolute blast to play! It’s got that iconic Treasure feel, and it’s a treat for fans of Astro Boy/Osamu Tezuka’s works, with lots of references and characters to find.
I just bought one bc I had one back when they launched. Does anyone know where to send them in the get better screens? I don’t want a sp. I want to keep the original but update the screen
I had my genisis for 30 years before I sold it I figured I hope it brings happiness to someone like it brought me back in the day I still have my game gear
Definitely agree with the Shining Force remake. For a while there I thought it surpassed the original, but I kind of lean back towards the Genesis version these days.
Even though the DS and DS Lite have a GBA port it's still worth getting a GBA emulator for it due to simple unavailability (or egregious prices) of so many titles on the 2nd hand market.
Phantasy Star Collection was actually the first chance I had to play the games on them. Obsessed over the original for a week straight. Sonic Advance 3 was the CLOSEST to matching the Genesis originals, I felt, until Sonic 4.
I thought for sure you would show the Nights Into Dreams Demo for the GBA it's just a short Demo but it's a Sweet game it looks and plays great on the GBA.
Great list! TBH, I don't understand how anyone could say that Gunstar Superheroes was a misstep. It's amazing! To me it was a nice complement to the original despite the changes. And like the original, it pushed the GBA hardware in amazing ways! Definitely worth anyone's time, imo!
Don’t worry X. When it comes to “Space Channel 5” you’re not alone man 😂🤣😭. To this day I still don’t understand it since it first released on the Dreamcast.
One thing you forgot about with Sonic Advance 3 is that you play as two characters this time and you have different abilities depending on which characters you team up, so SAdv3 does have something that makes it distinct from the first two.
I considered it, but Sega didn't have anything directly to do with it. Treasure got the license and handled it from there. Since Treasure developed the first as well, I really don't consider it a "Sega game" in the traditional sense.
The worst Sonic game for the GBA was the GBA version of Sonic 1 (Genesis/Mega Drive version) because of the slow-downs, glitches, bugs and screen crunches.
I remember being so shocked by Revenge of Shinobi, I was so taken off guard by what I was playing that I actually tried to return it saying it didn't work, as I was still on my first job at BK on the weekends during HS and didn't want to be wasting money on shit like that, but no go. Sonic Advance's THQ logo also threw me off and I ended up avoiding the whole series because of it haha.
Sega published the best fighting game in the Nintendo DS , Bleach Dark Souls (if y'all never play it. Get an emulator play it on a tablet in portrait mode with an ipega controller ..you'll thank me)
We didn't had much money back then but dang, Sonic Advance 1 was and still is fun. It's certainly one of my favorite GBA games and leagues above its successors.
Sega had a pretty decent showing on the GBA, although there's no question they put out a few stinkers. Personally I really liked Shining Force, the Sonic Advance games, the Puyo games, Columns Crown, Chu Chu Rocket, Gunstar Super Heroes and a few others. Clearly I liked Columns more than you! :) Out Run, Space Harrier and Super Hang-On were pretty well done for the time and a neat little package as well, but man, that After Burner, ugh, terrible. I appreciate what they attempted with Sega Rally and Crazy Taxi, but yeah, those were complete misfires. Maybe they should have worked with the team that did V-Rally 3!
It's suprising sega didn't develop nothing but stinkers on purpose for GBA hardware considering Nintendo and Sega were arch rivals for the better part of a decade.
Watched this one before it was re-uploaded. Should I watch it again and look for changes? Haha =D Sega's departure from the console market left me feeling sad about the company's future...but Sonic Advance and their GC releases kept me hopeful about the future! And if you're ever worried about Sega disappearing, just look at how many Sega arcade buildings there are in Japan! They're doing fine even without their name in front of a console.
Great video =) Interesting to see all the Sega titles on the system. Some great ones. Astro Boy was very good. Shame altered beast never got a proper sequel. Sega should atleast make some new installments in the old genesis style . Games like Super Shinobi series (Revenge, Shinobi 3) , Altered Beast, Ristar, Ranger X,Golden Axe would be great to see. Im glad Streets Of Rage 4 is upcoming. It probably wouldnt be that expensive to make sequels to those games with genesis style visuals, and it would fit perfectly. Double Dragon 4 did that a few years ago and it was fun. It takes alot of talent to pull that off though and Sega may not have that available anymore. Sonic Mania was awesome though, so I think they could put something nice together for those. Id also love to see sequels to arcade games like the original Space Harrier, Old style Shinobi, and maybe some of their super scaler games.
Finally, a UA-camr that acknowledges the awesomeness that was/is Astroboy Omega Factor. Not just one of the best Sega licensed games, but imho, one of the best GBA games.
SEGA between 2002-2006 were still finding their feet as a Software only company. Bad decision on Outsourcing shows more than when they tried to keep their Brand relevant. Sometimes though, you have to realise that getting your name out there over having fewer games that show your Brand Quality is going to cost you more in the long run, and I think that is what they realised as of late.
Ah shining force and souls. Even after Camelot left Sega, I felt the gba shining games gave us hope for Sega and Camelot to patch things up and fine tune the shining series. But that never happened. The shining soul games would be perfect for online multiplayer on the switch.
Yeah. I played the SF games on the Genesis to death. Never tried the Soul games, though. I know he doesn't have a high regard for them, but I think I'm going to give Soul 2 a try. It looks right up my alley for this vintage gaming.
Because they allowed that poo poo of a game alien colonial marines to be released in what is the biggest lie in video game history and got the shoes sued off of them
I didn’t even know sega had games on the advance just weird they never tried with another handheld I had the game gear even though that thing ate batteries my cousin tried to trade me a Atari lynx because he wanted a game gear
Yeah....Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 all play very differently so I don’t know what you’re talking about. And while I had issues with 3, the partner mechanic was a good concept. Like a much more evolved Sonic and Tails from the Megadrive games. I also had zero Issues with them being annual releases, just meant more Sonic games to play back in those days (alongside Megaman Battle Network and Megaman Zero, two annual GBA franchises I also adored). It’s not like a 50 hour adventure each or anything so each entry still feels good. They also represented different feels. Advance 2 felt like the speedy stages of Adventure 2 (and brings the Homing Attack to 2D Sonic for the first time as well) while Advance 3 was clearly taking after Heroes.
Yeah it's a fantastic game. And seemingly unknown, it's rarely mentioned in videos about GBA games, I've found. It's a top 10 game for the GBA, at the least. One of my favourite treasure games, and all their games are fantastic so that's high praise. I keep replaying it
@@duffman18 Its one of those rare things an amazing licensed game. Its usually the licensed games that arent promoting a particular movie or thing like that, they usually are the good ones. I think the time crunch or the license holder sees it as a promotion tool fro the movie and not much more.
Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure is another really solid but unknown licensed side scroller for the gba with great music, controls, sprite work, etc. Really worth a try.
There's more and more people being pretty vocal about PS2's library being 90% shovelware who completely disregard the fact that GBA's was like that as well, but I honestly think GBA was worse in that regard. There's more bad or just weak games on it than good ones without some weird artistic design like prerendered 3D models which just look ugly compared to 2D drawn sprites, at least in my opinion.
I completed the Shining Force remake as a teen back in the day and thought it was awesome and sure, it is I suppose. But I would never recommend it over the original today in 2020. The graphics/color contrast of the original is sharper and more vibrant, the sprites look way better and the FM music and "BOOM" atk sound effects are superior too imo.
This GBA era was full of Hit and Misses. While the portable features a lot of GEMS it also have lot of the crapware that nowadays floods cellphone app stores and also Nintendo Switch Eshop. I also got dissapointed by the new version of classics, the same happened on the Ps2, I remember a that awful Project Altered Beast, Kunoichi ripping off the Decent Newer Shinibi and a poor version of Golden Axe in Sega Ages 2500 and others (at least they had an amazing port of Dynamite Deka). Good reviews as usual.
I remember how strange it felt seeing the Sega Logo in an intro and then Sonic running on a Nintendo device. Only ten years before this was unthinkable.
There technically were Sega games on the NES, and in Japan they were fullly licensed by Nintendo
But wasn’t that before sega brought out the master system cause I was 4 or 5 when sega genisis came out

It could have easily given Fire Emblem a run for its money. Sega had a decade to capitalize on it before Fire Emblem came to the West and they squandered it
Astroboy is a gem, gameplay , graphics, the way the game pays tribute to the ozamu tezuka work and all his characters. A 2D masterpiece IMO.

GAME OVER YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Great video!!! Had a few of these great games for my GBA back in the day! Still pissed they screwed up Shinobi and Altered beast!!
Great list! TBH, I don't understand how anyone could say that Gunstar Superheroes was a misstep. It's amazing! To me it was a nice complement to the original despite the changes. And like the original, it pushed the GBA hardware in amazing ways! Definitely worth anyone's time, imo!
Great video!
You only really missed on title “The Tower SP”
Which is a really great, really SEGA style building management sim.
Actually, that game is a port of the classic maxis game 'simtower'. Puplished, but not invented or developped by sega.
Gunstar Super Heroes is great. I feel like people hate on it because it's not just a port of the original.
Don’t worry X. When it comes to “Space Channel 5” you’re not alone man 😂🤣😭. To this day I still don’t understand it since it first released on the Dreamcast.
Super Gunstar Heroes = awesome only true sequel to Gunstar Heroes!
I just wanted to say...thanks...great work
Alright! on time for breakfast also LOL Testicular Fortitude! I have never heard that in me life. I think i will start using that!
One thing you forgot about with Sonic Advance 3 is that you play as two characters this time and you have different abilities depending on which characters you team up, so SAdv3 does have something that makes it distinct from the first two.
I never cared for the Sonic Adventure games, but Sonic Advance? That's the sweet stuff!
17:12 you not playing it right, that was a great game .
Where getting spoilt!! , thank you lord sega 👍👍
Sega was mostly incredible on the GBA!
You forgot Advance Guardian Heroes. While not as good as the original on Sega Saturn, it's still fun to me.
Can you do a second episode of this please?
Phantasy Star Collection is a good one. Finally managed to beat the first Phantasy Star, if only barely, on it.
Zombies and pinball...shoot, shoot,side,side,of the screen 😉
I remember being so shocked by Revenge of Shinobi, I was so taken off guard by what I was playing that I actually tried to return it saying it didn't work, as I was still on my first job at BK on the weekends during HS and didn't want to be wasting money on shit like that, but no go. Sonic Advance's THQ logo also threw me off and I ended up avoiding the whole series because of it haha.
Sega published the best fighting game in the Nintendo DS , Bleach Dark Souls (if y'all never play it. Get an emulator play it on a tablet in portrait mode with an ipega controller ..you'll thank me)
Dark Souls and Blade of Fate both felt like a true sequel for 1996 Guardian Heroes. Awesome Treasure sprites and chaotic action!
dude you are on a roll with the releases
Everyone loves the afterburner tune....
It's a classic.
Do not get the Phantasy Star collection on the GBA. It's said to have a lot of issues.
I had soo much fun with MonkeyBall on GBA. The flat shaded polygons work nice on the system.
We didn't had much money back then but dang, Sonic Advance 1 was and still is fun.
It's certainly one of my favorite GBA games and leagues above its successors.
The GBA is awesome, I really liked the Sonic Advance trilogy on the console. I never thought I'd play Sonic on a Nintendo, but they were great games.
Could've sworn this was uploaded a couple of hours back
Sega had a pretty decent showing on the GBA, although there's no question they put out a few stinkers. Personally I really liked Shining Force, the Sonic Advance games, the Puyo games, Columns Crown, Chu Chu Rocket, Gunstar Super Heroes and a few others. Clearly I liked Columns more than you! :)
Out Run, Space Harrier and Super Hang-On were pretty well done for the time and a neat little package as well, but man, that After Burner, ugh, terrible.
Haha =D
Sega's departure from the console market left me feeling sad about the company's future...but Sonic Advance and their GC releases kept me hopeful about the future!
And if you're ever worried about Sega disappearing, just look at how many Sega arcade buildings there are in Japan! They're doing fine even without their name in front of a console.
I hope they eventually get another chance before I was a Sony guy I had mostly sega stuff while my brother had all the Nintendo stuff
Does that version of Spinball stay that zoomed in the whole time?
I had a sonic game on Nintendo DS, I'm an og sega guy and that game was fast & nice👌🏾
Astro Boy Omega Factor is probably the best GBA game, hands down.
TheConsole Killer.Sonic mania was a fan made game.Sega didn't make it.
@@hypergoon1152 Maybe thats why it was so good. ha ha
TheConsole Killer.Yeah.
As soon as I heard Treasure you had my attention. Have they made anything lately?
Update: Nothing since 2014. I wonder why.
Because they allowed that poo poo of a game alien colonial marines to be released in what is the biggest lie in video game history and got the shoes sued off of them
Sonic Advance & Astro Boy Omega Factor was my shit back in the day
I didn’t even know sega had games on the advance just weird they never tried with another handheld I had the game gear even though that thing ate batteries my cousin tried to trade me a Atari lynx because he wanted a game gear
Astro Boy Omega Factor is the best game on this list imo then shining force second.
Yeah it's a fantastic game. And seemingly unknown, it's rarely mentioned in videos about GBA games, I've found. It's a top 10 game for the GBA, at the least. One of my favourite treasure games, and all their games are fantastic so that's high praise. I keep replaying it
Its definitely a great game.
Great idea for a video SLX. Big GBA fan here as well as Sega.
I played and beat Sonic Battle. Highly enjoyed it as a kid.
11AM and a new Sega Lord X video? Hell yeah!
Fellow brit!
This is the only channel that I like the video before I even watch said video. I’m never wrong too.
22:33 does sounds like windows
Error screen???
This GBA era was full of Hit and Misses. While the portable features a lot of GEMS it also have lot of the crapware that nowadays floods cellphone app stores and also Nintendo Switch Eshop.
I also got dissapointed by the new version of classics, the same happened on the Ps2, I remember a that awful Project Altered Beast, Kunoichi ripping off the Decent Newer Shinibi and a poor version of Golden Axe in Sega Ages 2500 and others (at least they had an amazing port of Dynamite Deka).
Good reviews as usual.
