“The Serpent Queen” tells the story of Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton) who, against all odds, became one of the most powerful and longest-serving rulers in French history. Catherine’s tale unfolds through flashbacks as she defends her actions and imparts the lessons she’s learned to her new servant girl, Rahima (Sennia Nanua). At 14, the young, orphaned Catherine (Liv Hill) marries into the 16th-century French court. Despite her commoner status, her uncle Pope Clement (Charles Dance), has negotiated a large dowry and a geopolitical alliance in return for the union, and with it comes the expectation of many heirs. However, on her wedding night, Catherine learns that her new husband is in love with Diane de Poitiers (Ludivine Sagnier), a beautiful lady-in-waiting twice his age. With her future suddenly uncertain and with little hope of conceiving, Catherine must quickly learn who she can trust - both within her personal entourage of courtiers and the members of the royal court - while outmaneuvering anyone who underestimates her determination to survive at any cost.

Well Catherine de Medici and Mary of scots never gotten along. In fact hated her daughter in law because compare to her children, Mary is a better pedigree then them. Even when Mary asked for her help during her return in Scotland, Catherine refused since she was no longer her problem anymore.

I think it's also because Mary's mom side of her family, the Guises, tried to supplant Catherine(when she was still childless) with one of their own.

I didn’t really like how the show portrayed Mary. Was she that much of a religious fanatic in real life? I know her cousin Mary Tudor was, but I never heard that about Mary Stuart other than that she was a devout Catholic.

Well they always portray her first marriage wrong probably because they were both literal children when they got married she wasn't a teenager but and actual child.

@@nicoleackerman205... Mary queen of Scots was born 8th December 1542 and marries Francis in 24th April 1558.
Making her about 15.... most definitely a teenager.
She was, however, a Queen at 5 days old, crowned less then 1 year old and sent to France to be raised when she was 5.

Does she want to prevent the marriage

Possibly. Catherine might have felt threatened by Mary. Although Catherine was a Queen, Mary of Scots was also a Queen in her own right practically since birth.

@@sunnylaurie91 It is possible because Katherin was only queen by marriage and if it hadn’t been for her sons she would’ve had no standing at court whatsoever. Whereas Mary was an anointed Queen, in addition to having the throne of Scotland by birthright she was also the heir apparent to the Tudor dynasty(In England) as she was the direct descendent of Henry the seventh. I’m not quite sure what Katherin‘s opinion of Mary was in real life. We know she raised her from an early age so she may have felt affection. But she may have also felt threatened for the reasons I just stated. She may also have felt indifferent because the fact of the matter is Mary’s lineage made her valuable as any sons she would’ve had with Frances could’ve been the start of a new Empire, that hypothetical child being heir to France (By way of Francis), Scotland, and inevitably England.

Mary arrived when she's but a child Queen in France. I watched a documentary about these two's relationship. They never recorded Mary as contrarian against Catherine, in fact, I heard she actually looked up to Catherine. But Catherine didn't trust Mary, since she's not only a foreigner, she's also had better pedigree than her and her children. They said that Mary made a remark about how she's descended from hundreds of kings outloud in court in front of Catherine, at one point, which many assumed offended and angered Catherine. Catherine was never impolite toward her, but she sure was never warm to Mary and after Francis II died, she definitely didn't want Mary lingering about there.

Let's not forget that the way the show presents Mary she is very much a Catholic zealot. Also this would have been close to the end of Mary Tudors reign and life. So Catherine would want to avoid the same thing happening in France.

In the show, maybe? In history, not at all, the match was just too advantageous. However, she didn't seem to be wild about it, either. Mary's mother was a French noblewoman from the Guise family, leaders of the procatholic faction that hated Catherine's attempts to make peace with the protestants. During Francis' short reign, they used the young queen to gain more influence at court - remember, IRL Mary was fifteen. Catherine opposed them not necessarily out of compassion towards protestants, but because protestant nobles were powerful enough to throw the country in disarray if she didn't loosen their oppression somewhat, and the Guise family hated these compromises.
