- Denied in its previous two seasons, Darien returned to the pinnacle of Connecticut high school football with a thorough 42-7 victory over Fairfield Prep.
David Evanchick and the Darien defense allowed 24 yards in the first half and 52 through three quarters while Tighe Cummiskey (188 yards rushing), Jeremiah Stafford (3 TDs) and Miles Drake (TD passing, TD rushing) put the Jesuits away with a 21-point third quarter and made their case for No. 1

I picked Darien to dominate this game and go on a revenge tour, taking down St. Joe's, Newtown, New Canaan and Fairfield Prep to win another Class LL state football championship.
As a longtime follower of FCIAC football, I knew our conference would stack up against anyone.
I'll take comfort knowing that Darien gained a measure of revenge and beat Newtown (who didn't make the state playoffs) this season. Personally, I wouldn't have been disappointed if Darien had blown out Newtown 42-7 instead of the 27-14 score.
But I will go as far as saying how glad I was that Newtown didn't make the LL playoffs this year and quite frankly, that's what I call true poetic justice.
I wished the CIAC committee put Newtown against Darien in this year's playoffs so Newtown would've lost.
I'm very confident that Darien would not only beat Newtown, but prove that they're the better team.
Reminder to Newtown, their coaching staff and administration:
Darien, maintained their focus and determination in avenging that 2019 state title loss to you. They found a way to make a state playoff run to a 12-1 record and a state title. They made zero excuses.
Newtown, simply put: Your head coach, coaching staff and administration watched the state playoffs. You disregarded the importance of winning with honor and humility.
Darien did. Maybe you can learn from them.
