  • Here's the B-roll for the Broadway production of Amour. In Paris, it was titled "Le Passe Muraille" and won the 1997 Prix Moliere for Best Musical. In the US, it ran from Oct 20, 2002 to Nov 03, 2002. With music by Michel Legrand a French libretto by Didier van Cauwelaert (English adaptation by Jeremy Same) it was directed by James Lapine, and starred Malcom Gets (as a clerk who gains the ability to walk through walls and becomes a Robin Hood type character) , Melissa Errico and featured Christopher Fitzgerald and Norm Lewis in the ensemble (and Christian Boyle as an understudy).

Christian Borle was the understudy who went on to have a notable career but was unknown at this point. I worked at the theater as an usher so I believe I saw numerous performances of this musical including previews. It was only 90 minutes long without an intermission. Not well received. One night during a preview, part of the moving set fell and broke splintering into the audience. No one was hurt. Another night, Malcolm Gets decided to watch the performance and Borle went on. Borle was infinitely better and the show would have had a better chance if he had the lead. I also spoke a few times to producer Jerry Schoenfeld and he thought this show had a chance but even with these clips you can see it was kind of bland. Even the magic of him walking through walls didn't come off as well as it should. However, the cast was extremely nice, including Ms. Errico's husband, Patrick McEnroe, the great tennis player who was always there supporting and a genuinely nice guy.
Not sure if this was a legitimate recording but if not you got one past me or I left on the early shift that night as it seems to be coming from the direction of my second center aisle.

Great information. And yes as it is B-roll (thus hired by production to shoot portions of the show for publicity purposes…) it is legit ;).

Good chance I was aware you there then as I remember those times when that happened. I lasted as an usher from 1997-2010 at the Music Box Theater and would occasionally sub at other theaters to see shows. I did it for extra money as I put myself through 2 master's degrees to be a teacher. By 2010 it became too much to teach, travel from Long Island where I then lived, and be away from my wife and 2 small boys. The Music Box ushers for that era from the early 90s to even after I left were just a bunch of guys (and we were all men for the longest time for some reason I was never sure of) who were all friends and still are. We all traveled in together after our Sunday football games. Such great memories, thanks for this video. @@gionmusic
