    I graduated in 2012 and lemme tell you, Social Media is not at all where my anxiety came from. I was on Facebook too where people knew me, so whatever anxiety I had came from school itself and performing.

      So true, I graduated in 2018 and social media was essentially the only outlet I could use to express being trans safely, because being different around other kids irl is terrifying if the school doesn't work on incentivizing against that type of discrimination, ironically my irl person was more fake and made up than the social media version of me

      Social media is primarily where my anxiety came from from the mid 2010s until now where I stopped using Twitter and such.
      I'm so sick of people pretending that it doesn't have a negative effect on us.
      It legitimately has a psychological effect and it's been proven so many times.
      It's a cause for a lot of anxiety and depression especially for younger demographics and I refuse to be gaslit and told that my anxiety wasn't real or something just because it was caused by SM

      I graduated in 2013 and I can absolutely agree. School was incredibly anxiety-inducing. Social media is just a distraction. It provides its own type of anxiety, but it's not the cause of all our problems like some people say it is.

      @@Zinkolo No one's saying that Social Media *never* affects people, we're more saying that Social Media is not *the* reason people in middle/high school experience anxiety. Some of us are just dumb, ugly, fat, and/or are easy bully targets. Or all at once for me (I'm fine now)

  • @Zinkolo

    People are taking the wrong message from this.
    Social media is 100% a large cause for anxiety in most people.
    It wasn't until I stopped using Twitter and read it that my anxiety levels finally went down and i stopped watching drama videos on youtube.
    We're just now realizing it's effects and finding out that actual natural socialization and instead of a platform that gamifies socializing is actually good for us.
    Why are people suddenly becoming contrarian and trying to bury this fact?
    Just because you happen to fit in with the masses on Twitter doesn't mean other people aren't suffering from it's affects.

    I think the anxiety was always there. It’s just talked about and more visible
    Wasn’t the social media

    • @Zinkolo
      @Zinkolo Рік тому +5

      I think it's definitely social media.
      Pretending that social media doesn't have an effect on anxiety is extremely ignorant of the core issue

      @@Zinkolo yeah I don’t. People were always like this just like gays were always there just wasn’t actually talked about or ignored.
      I’d say there is more anxiety and mental issues related to the economy though

      It's *both.* Why don't y'all just accept that your single personal experience is not all there is to it? Yes, teenage years are absolutely terrible, and they always have been. That doesn't mean that current social media trends can't make it *worse.*

    The problem isn't just social media. It's social media on our phones 24/7. There really is a legit link between lots of social media use and potential mental health issues. These apps are literally *designed* to keep us looking at them for a long time - the dings, the push messages etc. It's easy to become obsessed over things and get stuck in our heads using it all the time like that. Being present in the here and now becomes harder and harder when that is what you're used to.

    I graduated HS in 2011, I used MySpace a little bit in middle school and Facebook exploded on the scene in 2009. But I’d say I got off lucky; I had a Twitter account in 2009 but didn’t really use it till 2012 or so in college.
    I cannot imagine going to school now with how bad social media has gotten

  • @cookiesyruplover

    Anxiety comes from the fact most people have normalized "Performing" instead of actually "Just living life", some people find it easier to find their tribe (people who you can truly be yourself with, no judgement, actual support, not enabling bad/toxic behavior) and some don't. So to survive, we make a facade so we aren't ostracized or targeted for harassment. Even if there is a low chance of such, fear exists as other people's insecurities get projected to each other.
    The older you get, the more jaded you get and have less fucks to give. This gives freedom to be yourself, helping other people who are similar to you to find you (although bonding and being close with others still involve even more emotional vulnerability/time/effort/proximity) The more we deal with our demons, the less fear we have because we realize we aren't completely helpless. (also the camaraderie of knowing you're not alone with your struggles, everyone has shitty problems and insecurities)
    Social media has done both good and bad things with its accessibility, it either helped or worsened anxieties by providing easier spaces to meet people who share your interests but also increased echo chambers led by the loudest and most toxic of folks.
    The poison of peer pressure, emotional abuse and fear mongering existed before but has evolved with technology. But! Good people exist, help/knowledge is in reach and there's power in you that can overcome anything! No one is ever truly alone so please know that whatever battle you're fighting, we are rooting for you, live and enjoy existence! No one can fully teach you how except yourself but I hope you find what brings you joy (along with people who share it with you!)

    It's just visibility. I've always been socially anxious even before I had Socmed. You could make similar statements about TV and Celeb culture of the 90s and 80s: Teens seeing a 'perfect' person and being ridiculed for not meeting that perfection.

    I graduated in 2019. It was a very anxiety-filled time, and it wasn't because of social media. Not saying it doesn't have any negatives, but it's obvious these guys don't know how high school is now.

    • @gatorbelt1772
      @gatorbelt1772 Рік тому

      High school now is way different because the stupid little shit people get offended by now was the norm back before like 2004. So, not only do they not know what it's like now, but the younger side of their audience doesn't know what it was like back then either. Of course it's harder now when everything is put under a Microscope to find the hidden flaw and "cancel" each other. It's the dumbest fucking thing to ever happen and quite honestly, the most destructive. All these stupid knobs acting like people in life never and won't make a mistake. There's more anxiety and shit feelings in todays society directly linked the newer generations and their bullshit way of always having to be right and get what they want.

    I like social media, it's like contemplating the crowd, looking without being looked at, a space to learn about humanity. Why is Danny so anxious? People Need to chill out, life is not an horror movie, nobody Is out there waiting for every little mistake you may make. Chill, humanity, life is short
