I must say I prefer the 5e explanation that Beholders breed by dreaming - and the weirder beholder forms are the result of particular types of dreams
It's not so much that they reproduce by dreaming, it's the fact that powerful beholders dreams can alter reality and spawn creatures.
Yeah I agree, it’s a much more alien and apt way for them to reproduce.
@@jeremyvanauken5011 That's kind of always been their origin lol
What did the explanation used to be?
...But that's not The Origin of this Species.
Can't say more, lest Vecna curse me for revealing Multiverse's undoing.
AJPickett has the truth, if ye want to know...
It’s really interesting that id’s games were heavily inspired by their DND sessions, with the cacaodemon being inspired by beholders
THATS what I was thinking of, the whole video I was like "where have I seen these floating eyeballs before" lol
Considering his girlfriend was a medusa lady...
Lol: "CACOdemon"; "CACAOdemon" would still be an awesome name for some snack.
Doom started out as a dnd game. They even said that it actually happened in dnd
Inspiration for the Marlboro in Final Fantasy
Started off with LOTR. Then you ripped open a pack of SCP. And now...now you've let loose DnD. My goodness. I love this channel.
I do love how you say "You've opened up DnD" as if it is some ancient vial containing an ancient soul. 😁
Do you know why I call my Sword Beauty? _Because it's in the eye of the beholder!_
-Some DnD player whose name I can't remember. Sorry!
I think the UA-cam channel all things DnD covered that story.
(All though many people have probably made that joke)
Baby Beholder is kinda cute.
Beholders: Why is a Boss music is playing?
Doomguy: Rip and Tear.
You can loot beauty from their eyes.
This is Mike Wazowski’s son
i knew he shouldnt fucked that copra
Spectators are Mike and Celia's sons
He gets it on to the earape of monsters inc
I wonder if they also get blocked in photos too.
This comment is cursed
0:01, don't look at me like that
carl charleston Get yourself someone who looks at you the same way the beholder looks at literally everything
I think I remember seeing a beholder as a guard of the Central Bureaucracy in the futurama episode how hermes requestioned his groove back
"Don't Tell my boss i was sleeping!" 😆
Love this series. Hope we get a lich or wight video! So many cool creatures to choose from 😀
Mimics are fun too.
Liches are not exclusive beings to Dungeond and Dragons, right? I mean, Sauron can also be classified as a Lich, he's an undead king who stored his soul in an object, and can raise powerful undead warriors, specifically, the Ringwraiths.
"Dribbles out of it's mouth as a foul drool", Eeewwwww!
Beholders were the first DnD creature that really fascinated me growing up
I belive these things were the inspiration for the cacodemons in doom
TES : "trying to rationally explain the hovering mecanism"
Also TES "absorbing magic thou their eyes"
you can give a rational explanation and a magical explanation. depends on which draws from which. a blimp can be created from magic in DND, does that mean it had to? or that a person's first thought at looking at one is "oh, clearly magic is the cause of this!" that's simply illogical.
That was the best video on Beholders I've ever seen. ❤ Superb!
The reproduction part was exceptional. Dreaming yourself to death or life was always stupid. This took the Beholder to another level like they should be. Like Illythids are called Mind Flayers, I would like to see Beholders given another name that honors them more.
Having a Beholder worship a deity, becoming a high priest of some evil being of death and having its own followers, priests, assassins would make a great and long campaign.
How to defeat a Beholder:
-finely ground grain powder
-a confined room
-an open flame
Due to its paranoia, the beholder has made preparations against a scenario where someone wants to kill it with grain powder and flames by ventilating its lair to a point that the powder will instantly be blown away.
Did you learn that trick from miners
a gate squerill might work also
Goblin Slayer?
@@pr6897 *Sagely nod* Goblin Slayer.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@Adam DeLocke That's gonna be cool.
Which eye?
Wait... are we talking about the horse?
(Black Beauty for anyone that might not have gotten it right away. I know there won't be many but there will probably be one or two that haven't heard of the book/movie)
I usualy come here for the SCP content, but this was a real treat, beholders are my fave DnD monster and I didn't know half of this.
I'm glad to see your branching out man, love your content keep it up!
I wouldn't call this branching out? He covers a lot of stuff. Happy to see D&D though.
SCP is just so large and interesting he has been focusing on that. Plus, keep doing what made you popular
There’s a beholder working in the central bureaucracy, tends to sleep a lot though.
So...beholders move by farts. Got it.
The last campaign I played in, the BBEG was a massive city-sized overseer, basically a beholder tree. It dominated other creatures including beholders, and tried to create an army, until we killed it. It was actually my patron (I was a GOO-turned-Hexblade warlock).
Our DM wanted to amp up aberrations like aboleths and beholders, so the two main villains were both of these creatures, an Elder Aboleth and Grand Overseer, as I called them.
There are a lot of references to Beholders in pop culture. Pretty much any floating orb with an eyeball was inspired by it. In D&D, there is a rarely used monster called the Lurking Strangler that looks like two eyeballs with a ball of tangled nerves and muscle tissue for bodies, which Beholders keep as pets because they remind them of themselves. There's also the lesser Spectators, which are created from Beholder eye stalks if I remember correctly. Lots more variations!
“Of seeing your destruction.” I see what you did there.
i love your videos. im a total lore nut and love to listen to the lore of universes like scp, dnd, lotr, etc. keep up the good work man!
I love the thumbnail pic.
The sh*t eating smile on that beholder's face is amazing.
Learns about the life of a baby beholder*
The beholder is even more interesting now
Oh dude please do a Phase Spider video I would be so happy.
One thing I like about 5e changes to lore is the beholder life cycle. Being birthed from nightmares is a nice twist.
The thing is, they're kind of overpowered. Their reality altering powers are just too much. At least this old version has to absorb magic and can't just make you go poof with a thought. Makes for more active ways of dealing with them, instead of just "hope they're asleep and try not to wake 'em up"
Some of my favorite creatures are
- Triobriand's Automata,: Scorpion Golems in the Undermountain created by one of the Mad Mage's Apprentices
-Clockwork Horrors: Similar to Triobriand's Scaladars and Thanatars, these are extraplanar robot spiders made from precious metals and even mythril and adamantite
-Modrons: the sentient shapes that make Mechanus tick
-The Phlumph: once voted by Dragon Magazine as the most useless monster in D&D, these peaceful magic missile shooting farting flesh pizzas are hilarious
Here's an Idea fit for a TPK: An elder orb Hive mother, who breeds elder orbs.
Oh goodness gracious that would be horrid to fight! I love it!
A truly deadly enemy. Approach or fight with extreme caution.
May I suggest the Mind Flayers next? The material from Planescape makes them extra special IMO.
Beholders also have reality bending capabilities. They’re able to form things simply through their imagination, and it’s only their limited imagination and most beholders innate craziness and narrassism that most aren’t able to put this ability to its fullest potential
They sometimes hold guns and rocket-launchers too.
wtf
Beholster
By beholster eye, dragun tooth
That big, green one shown at the beginning & end reminds me of Shumah Gorath from Marvel.
So Ive been subbed to this channel for a while only really listened to Cthullu Mythos and the SCP stuff. This was my first D&D video he's done, and now all I want is him to DM a game. I love this channel. I'm going to go watch the other D&D stuff.
Watch runesmith's video on them, it's about a more recent version from 5e (this one is from 3e)
Never thought u would go to D and D lore. But I'm really enjoying it keep the vids coming
Love it. I hope you cover the races too at some point.
That thumbnail is the absolute best description of beholders in general.
What's worse than an eyeball that desintegrates you with a look?
An eyeball that controls 20 of those.
the really great thing about beholders is that they LOOK like wild, manic ferocious beasts so msot people just think they'd just be a random snarling monster, but the surprise is that yes they ARE those things they are ALSO intelligent and can talk and despite their appearance can be used as good Big Bads in a campaign
I'd use the method the "goblin slayer" used ^^
Mustang would have no problem dealing with it...those eyes are just massive targets.....
Nah, the eyes are stronger than the actual flesh of a beholder. And magical weapons are completely useless on the big one.
I love when he mercs envy
There seems to be some important stuff missing like where the first Beholders came from and them dream a new Beholders in reality.
Different entries probably.
He never mentioned reality altering, so probably beholders in THIS book (the one he says he used) are not capable of doing things like dreaming up another beholder
Imagine if they're capable of holding weapons, especially long-ranged ones. That would be terrifying.
"opposable thumbs" lol
Would love a tarrasque video by you!
Same, as I've no idea what that is lol. Never played d&d
@@robertbrand5410when??
@@robertbrand5410 i cant find it anywhere
he's is talking about the SCP video, that's the only tarrasque video that he made about
@@zarekshoken1424 ua-cam.com/video/8pJUm4lKOhE/v-deo.html
It was an SCP Lord Blackwood Tale, but I'd watch one on the Tarrasque in the DnD universe.
I had no idea you did D&D videos. More please.
- Friendly Neighborhood DM
I believe you mean Exploring Doom: The Cacodemon
"What is that?! Don't tell me!"
"I am the past to come back to haunt you Lopan!"
Grey Render (3.5 D&D edition) always one ov my favorites
I really like this series. I use to play 3rd addition D&D. Really cool to hear some of the lore. Keep it up.
Beholders and Aboleths feel like creature out of the SCP world, there is something to alien and haunting about them. I would love to see a crossover.
two great tastes that taste great together, I love this new series! I would like to request an Astral Dreadnaught next!
Mid-fight an eye stalk got broken off my beholder figure. Instead of beating the player responsible to a pulp I removed the disintegration ray from the beholder's arsenal because I'm a merciful GM
Do more Dnd stuff please.
Love these DnD videos, super interesting!
Now this will help me with learning about the universe of dungeons.amd dragons, I'm new to it and I'm really excited to try it out
Combustible Halo
Which universe?
D&D has several
There’s the Forgotten Realms (most popular)
There’s Greyhawk (the first)
Ravenloft (old fashioned horror)
Dark Sun (low tech mad max with jedi)
Dragonlance (Lotor clone)
Birthright (Game Of Thrones clone)
Mystara (Fuckin indescribable with a simple blurb)
One of my favorite monsters for sure.
Nothing about the Death Tyrants?
Every time I see a Beholder picture, I think of the movie 'Big Trouble in Little China'
#TheExploringSeries Wow! You picked some badass illustrations for this one! Who ever would have thought that there were so many pictures. I not only love to listen, but my eyes enjoy the illustrations as well. Thank you and keep up the great work! ♥️👍
As always a fantastic material. You are an incredible creator. Your videos ooze quality.
All I know about beholders is that beauty is apparently in their eyes.
Awesome. Pls do more d&d.
My favorite beholder variant is the Cacodemon.
Lords of Madness was a fantastic book. Also old-school beholder birth was a great to make players and their characters take SAN damage.
Though he's not a beholder, the green beholder reminds me of my time playing as Shuma Gorath in Marvel vs Capcom. I miss taking people to the chaos dimension.
I like the one from skyrim that gives you free books
That's not a beholder thats the deadric prince of knowledge.
I'd say that's a powerful ass Aboleth
Yog-sothoth?
Herma Mora
Behold! A new video from TES!
Behold(er)!
Got you fam
Please do the the tarrasque!!! Loved the vid btw!
Do more SCP please! The longer the video the better! One like the hanged king in length in terms of incorporating both an SCP entry and a tale/exploration log would be ideal! Every other channel just reads out the SCP instead of well...…..exploring it!
Oh neat, so there is a new video if you check the playlist frequently enough. Strange, UA-cam says this video is unlisted.
It is unlisted. I don't think UA-cam should add it to the playlist yet.
@@TheExploringSeries Talking about being unlisted.
HERE COMES THE CAVALRY.
I am gonna say it because someone has to be honest. Dude I love your work. The way you write, edit, find the right pictures to get across the right information, feelings, and mood is all just amazing. Although you have to use up to date information. Its ok if you present old information and then present the current information, but people really on you for a lot of lore from a lot of sources and you might be their only source. I don't want to be that guys that say "um but actually" but trust me when I say when using old edition information or mixing it without looking at that information's chronology will cause confusion for some.
DnD doesn't force you to follow its rules. You can use this version of the beholder as an explanation, it does NOT matter.
Also, he stated, loud and clear, that he's doing an older version and there are more. People shouldn't rely on ONE UA-cam channel for info, but even if they do, what's the problem? This version, btw, is much more interesting as an opponent than 5e's "children are a nightmare 2 electric boogaloo" beholders
I too love the cacodemon.
Spelljammer hype!
One cool thing about beholders is that they tend to alter reality to varying levels around them by just thinking stuff or dreaming. On a more extreme level for example, a beholder who just DECIDES through sheer force of will NOT to die, becomes a death tyrant, kind of a "lich beholder" ..he just... thinks and concludes to himself about things, looks at death and: "nah" ..no ritual or anything complicated required
If thats not badass i dont know what is
Great video, as always! Just one suggestion tho: no mention of "death tyrants"? Y'know, these floatting skulls ^^
It also was featured in the animated series. 😎👍
There is a variant seen in the movie, Big trouble in little China.
I'm really surprised that no Lovecraftian novel has taken advantage of the beholder's unique appearance. After all, the Elder Sign in the Mythos vaguely represents a Beholder.
When listening to these I remember neverwinter nights diamond edition with hordes of the underdark being my fav
There are Beholders in Dragon’s Dogma and they’re beyond badass. They have the ability to teleport into multiple places at once and instantly kill you by turning you to stone
I've been wanting to run a campaign where Pcs work for a beholder.
I love your non SCP videos. Nice to have some variety.
Watch what you say around here traveller, the scp folk don't take kindly to us speaking like that around these parts
I fear no man.
0:01 beholder giving you the bedroom eye ;)
Really hoping for a video on the Litch!!!
Keep up the good work bubba!
Yaaa! Another amazing video; that aside, from playing D&D pen & paper and CRPGs: I. Hate. Beholders. Loath them to no end.
I can't to see you cover Mind Flayers!
In Heroes of Might & Magic 3, Beholders are the Level 3 creature for Dungeon towns. I imagine that New World Computing probably had a deal with the old D&D guys to let them use Beholders in the Might & Magic games.
Yea they were also in might and magic 7 located in the underground caves alongside minatours
That was a good listen. That's some creepy reproduction. Would definitely like to include a Beholder cult in a campaign at some point.
Definitely would enjoy a video on Liches some day. My absolute favourite fantasy abomination. (Man is the real monster, after all)
Merry Christmas 🎄 ☃️❄️🌨️🦌🎅
A minute in and I could already tell where the Elder Scrolls got the idea for Hermaeus Mora
If I could work my will, I would cast none other than Peter Lori (or Brendan O'Brien) to play a Beholder character with a CGI rigged face. Or maybe a big, complex puppet like Audrey II and just his voiceover.
Brilliant, could you please make one about beholder kin as well?
Technically, I'd sorta argue? Being unique... Big Trouble in Little China.. one could say it's only a beholder-kin... But there was a variant in that movie lol
On the subject of flying insane balls of death that make you do a double take when you run into them, may i suggest an episode on the Gibbering Orb and it's lesser kin such as Gibbering Mouthers and there origins.
I prefer 5e's conception of Beholders: they are Aberrations in the truest sense. Beings born of dreams, with no definite origin (for, indeed, no Great Power would ever claim them as progeny). They reproduce by dreaming, as their subconscious fears and obsessions give rise to new Beholders, or to Beholder Kin.
