    I spoke to Bark River and they told me that a typical ferro rod has an HRC of 70 and a knife around 60. They don’t purposely sharpen the spine more because using the knife to scrape the ferro rod instead of a striker damages the spine consistently. I have verified that on all of my knives that all have a little nicks and dinks from Scraping.

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for sharing detailed info regarding the hardness and consequences of using a fire steel on a knife. And yes same here, the spine on several knives has small damages after using a ferro rod. Good to know that it is one of the reasons that bark river does not want to focus on a sharp spine. This leaves it up to the knife user itself if fire making using a ferro rod is worth it with the spine of a knife. Personally I guess we will continue scraping a ferro rod with the knives that can do it best and accept the damage on the spine. We love to use our knives.

    I like my Bark River. but important to know, the spine or handle may vary even if you buy the same model. the deviations in production are sometimes very large. you have to live with that. unfortunately nothing will change. by the way, what is that wonderful environment where you make the videos?

      We started to notice that as our Bark River collection is growing slowly. Still all of them are really nice and great for the job in the forest.

    I rather have a rounded off spine on my blades. I love carving and whittling so it really hurts my thumb if a spine is to sharp. My Mora Garberg actually sliced my thumb open when I first used it.
    I end up smoothing my spines out on almost all my blades.

    • @westcoastbushcrafters

      haha yeah Garberg has a great spine haha. Do you use leather gloves when carving stuff? We always wear gloves when working with knives and wood. Gives good protection. Guess it is a personal preference. Sounds like you found your way around :)

    Guys, what type of knife grind would you choose for a pure survival situation, and where you wouldn‘t have a sharpening stone or similar at all with you? Flat grind, saber grind, convex, scandi or else?

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  Рік тому +2

      Hi! Great and interesting question! We would choose convex grind. It is a robust grind that should hold an edge long. Besides it is easy to strop it if you are lucky to have a leather belt on you when you are in the survival situation. Maybe even possible to find a fine smooth stone for sharpening it. In that case covex is quite nice to sharpen. What would you have chosen and why? Cheers!

    • @pAdDy111hDH
      @pAdDy111hDH Рік тому +1

      @@westcoastbushcrafters thanks a lot for your response, guys! I would choose a scandi grind because it performs the best when working wood. But I don‘t know if it is as easy to sharpen as the convex grind in a survival scenario? What do you guys think?

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  Рік тому +2

      Could be a bit more challenging but very dependent on the material you will find. Maybe it will get a second bevel. Most important to keep it sharp :)

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  Рік тому +1

      That is an interesting one! Well first of all we do not have an LT in our collection nor have experience with one. Imagine is saying that an bravo LT is as good and possibly even better on the finer woodcarving tasks as feathersticking ect. No idea if it is a big difference though. The convex is really good and possible to get really sharp. What I like about the Bravo 1 is the trust you can put on the thickness. It will not break. For us it is very well possible to get awesome feathersticks and such. In general I guess a 4 mm / 4,2 mm thickness is the glory of a bushcraft knife thickness regarding the fine woodwork. Please discuss with me if you have other insights 😁👍

    $300- $400 for this knife is absolutely a no go for me, I think it's absurd to pay that much money for a knife that looks like a steak knife to me.

    • @westcoastbushcrafters
      @westcoastbushcrafters  8 місяців тому +1

      Very understandable that such a price for a knife is crazy for many people. And the prices just went up even more during last years. We think it is very expensive but very happy with it after having this one on the wish list for several years. Funny you mention that it looks like a steak knife, never thought about that comparison. In that case it is maybe one of the most robust steak knives there is. 5,5 mm thick knife and 200 grams:)

      @@westcoastbushcrafters A2 tool steel and a very minimalist design just don't set the table for me to pay this much. There are a lot better steels and designs for a lot less, I just purchased a Lionsteel T5 for $250 less than what they want for these, and I have several knives that are very good and didn't cost this much. It definitely reminds me of a steak knife, I'm sure I can agree it's a robust steak knife 😂
