    Taking care of last minute details before heading out on my summer adventures! First I visit the puppies, and a baby quail wanders in. Then the power goes out for 6 hours IN THE MIDDLE of a 110-degree heat wave! I check in with Ross the One-Legged Miner and his new/old mining equipment...and then my sis and I head into Pahrump to play with the new baby animals at Nature Health Farms, before going over to see the Morales boys about getting some gravel for our driveway. The Morales family comes in HUGE...and before you know it, our driveway looks better than ever!

    Wonderhussy definitely rocks. Always enjoy these updates. Quail chick was testing it's range when it was swooped up by well meaning human. Those chick's are independent little cusses.
    Use some of that level area at the top of the driveway for a solar array. Be a hedge against future power outages. But first get out on the road for your Summer adventures, Sarah. ❤❤❤

    All that free sunshine with no solor ….a small window ac can run off as little as 500 watts .😅

    • @GarrettKoval
      @GarrettKoval 29 днів тому +5

      A 500 watt window unit ain’t cuttin it in Death Valley bud.
      Would neeed a couple thousand watt system minimum just to power her heat pumps I’m sure. And assuming she’d have to pay someone to install, that’s an easy 10-20k minimum/low end all said and done. Realistically full size house system for her, including battery bank, would be like 35k maybe if she could buy and install everything herself, but that’s just not practical.
      I know this because, I live off grid, and built my own solar system.
      Yes, they do make AC units that even run off just a few hundred watts of DC now, but that is genuinely not practical in her scenario.

      @@GarrettKoval I was just talking about getting a couple hours of some relief until the power comes back on. Not a whole house . I live in south Florida . Have a small window unit I put in a small bedroom for when the power goes out after storms and such so I can sleep . Humidity is my issue. Last hurricane I was without power over 3 weeks . I give myself options. I also have solor … little baby ac I have pulls under 500 watts. .

    • @russellzauner
      @russellzauner 29 днів тому +4

      Solar works on light not heat, heat is bad for solar panels; drops their efficiency a LOT and can make them completely stop working.
      What you want is wind and solar both and if you know it's gonna be super hot with no wind then thermoelectric generation is a thing.
      Also 100% people need to use both layers of the cooling paint, especially in the desert (one layer reflects one spectrum of heat from entering and the other allows one spectrum to leave into space, resulting in the painted spot actually being *cooler* than ambient).

    • @brettreynolds4428
      @brettreynolds4428 29 днів тому

      @@russellzauner glad you told me , I’ve been putting my panels in the oven 😂

    • @GarrettKoval
      @GarrettKoval 28 днів тому

      Laughed at these responses. Guess we’re all arm chair experts here.
      I personally keep my solar panels in an oven as well.
      Solar efficiency may degrade up to 20% from heat, but the same panels don’t stop working from heat. Complete myth.
      Drive around the Mojave desert or anywhere in the desert in the world. There are mega watts worth of solar installations out in the deserts. Heat does not cause solar panels to stop working.

    So just letting you know I stayed at a Vegas Hotel in April and have just booked again in August and it is just the best place with the nicest people and you should stay there BUT please do not tell anyone ha ha. it’s called The Ahern and is close to Fountainblue but free parking no casino and I haven’t paid more than $80 for a night. Ron Ahern is a lovely guy and well the food is awesome and Effie the hospitality manager is a hoot. Absolutely the best place in Vegas but please don’t tell anyone!! 😎 Oh and $4 coffee and for an Aussie who loves good food and not getting ripped off I will make this my home away from home.

      When I was a young man I worked in construction, traveling across the country and living in motels in places near my workplaces. It always tried to stay at smaller, family owned and operated motels. The service was better and the rooms were perfect for a single guy. A few of the best motels would give us construction workers a discount if we were regular guests. I was a new apprentice and the older guys gave me tips on where to stay for the best deals. They also told me that if I caused any problems for the owners, they would personally hunt me down and beat the living crap out of me! Good times with great people! There’s nothing better than driving 18 hours from one power plant to another and being able to check into a clean, inexpensive room that was close to the job.

    Hello over there, when you do make the obvious choice to add or have a backup generator aim for duel fuel (propane and gas) and I suggest emphasis on propane. Remembering the propane last years compared to months with gas storage. Very easy solution and I'm certain your friends can help you choose the right size. Best to you.

    • @Michelle-li7fl
      @Michelle-li7fl 29 днів тому +1

      Get a duel fuel Generator but don't use the gas, only use the propane. Gas junks up the engine.

    I'm surprised more people didn't mention the petting zoo and all the animals on the farm. I wish I had money cause I would buy that place in a New York minute. It would be a complete labor of love! Your farmer friend looked a little sad and stressed out. I hope he is ok. I've always wondered about working in a desert environment and making it more livable for many species. When Wonderhussy and her friend Ross talked about the mines and how cool they stay my imagination went wild with the possibility of all the animals hiding out in the mines/caves to live cool in the hottest months. All the folks in the desert have such a fun place to be creative.

    I live in the desert as well get yourself a portable swamp cooler for inside. It works super well together. The swamp cooler uses very little electricity and can be run on the jackery in an emergency they usually are around 120 watts or less. The air-conditioning will work less and save you a lot on electricity.

Then, SCE came through and re-did all of the power lines and we have not had a power outage now in 1 1/2 years! We also have a smaller gas powered generator if the natural gas one doesn't work. It also has come in handy. Looking forward to your next adventure!

    Last power outage we had here didn't last more than a few minutes. They seldom do...but during last winter I had to run the generator. That one lasted for a couple of days....and nights.
    I wouldn't take that animal farm in trade for that generator. It sat for probably 3 years. I poured gas in it, found the battery was dead, but it started on the 2nd pull of the manual start
    rope. Got lucky buying that thing. I wish I was wealthy, I'd help Sarah and Eliza glom onto a nice propane powered generator for their digs.
    Around here, we call that gravel "state rock". That's because the state buys a lot of it to keep these country roads up. Anyway, 3 loads seemed to do pretty good in that application. Eliza
    did a great job on the diagram...and the boys did a great job on the delivers and spreading the road rock out. Box scrapers a great.
    My landlord and landlady came home a week or so ago with a puppy. The landlady is learning the hard way that puppies can be little brats. Sometimes, when this pup is told to do
    something or not to do it, she actually argues back. The little stinker...
    Looks like Ross will be working on that old compressor for a spell. But...he'll git 'er done if he can get the parts...and some of them can be made.
    Thanks a bunch for the update, and much love from down in my neck of the timber.

Have a generator installed for back up. Kudos to you and your sister living out there with no shade to speak of. I'm in Henderson, and it's pretty hot here, too! 🥵 But if any two people can live out there... it's you two sisters! You've made it your home. Sarah, if you and your sister are there for the long haul, you need both a good backup generator installed, and also a water softener.

    You can start small building a home solar power/battery bank system and build on to it as you go. You already have some experience with this on the road. First milestone would be having enough to power a refrigerator, Starlink, and one small room air conditioned. California has great tax incentives and net-metering laws that help alot.

    Amazing skills some people have with heavy machinery, manipulating hydraulics with the facility other people use knives and forks. Good to see the WH philosophy in play, treat people decently, friendly, and the world works better. Good suggestions on the solar array, with all those photons raining down, might as well put some of them to work.❤😊👍

    Here in northern NY we're going to get that heat wave next week, in the 90's but we're getting the humidity to go with it. Even the mosquitoes will be sweating.

    Thanks Sarah Jane, once again, for another great episode. By the way, summer has arrived here in Cornwall, UK. The temperature is 16 Centigrade, or 61 Fahrenheit. 😎

    What is Polymeric Joint Sand?
    In the past, many professionals who built patios, walkways, driveways and other outdoor hardscaping projects, would rely solely on torpedo sand, silica and other similar materials. The sand would get swept into the joints of pavers to enhance the interlock ability of the stones or pavers that were used to create the project. Paver stone sealer would typically be applied to the pavers to harden the top layer of the joint sand, making it resistant to weeds, insects and seasonal water washouts.
