- Filming my first F900R oil change as many owners are coming close to the end of their dealer warranty and want to self service their motorcycle.
After watching conflicting information on FB and other social media, I though it best to show you how much oil came out of my motorcycle and how much oil went back in and why.
Tools I used:
3/8 ratchet
3/8 T50 Torx
1/4 ratchet
1/4 Hex 5mm bit
1/4 extension bar
Hi Flo HF160 Oil Filter
76mm 12 Flutes Oil Filter tool
3ltr 5w40 Fully Synthetic Motorcycle Oil (pick any brand you like)

I would like to give a mention to Tayna Batteries who provide motorcycle batteries in the UK, I bought a new battery from them for this motorcycle and they delivered next day which impressed me www.tayna.co.u...
Great info!!
I did myself oil change.
Conclusions poured out 1,5 liters from main oil pan first screw. 1.2liters from second oil pan small screw + oil filter oil… added fresh oil 3.150cm3 checked oil level dipstick just in the middle.
Main screw T50 torx 28nm 5mm hex 10nm Oil filter 11nm torque Hope you found of interest .
Well done. As in the video BMW are giving the option of removing the second sump bung and doing away with the dry sump plus an option on using 4ltr. I may try it at next service and do a follow on video
Will love it 👍
Thanks for the torquespecs, found any manual yet?
Did you have 2 washers on the bolts, what are the dimensions ?
Thanks a lot!
Ok sir, you saved my bloody life.
No body said the same thing about this machine. This vidéo is now my new reference ! ✌️🇨🇵
🏆🏆🏆
Thanks for this. I like to put a piece of aluminium foil over the catalytic/exhaust to help keep it from getting oily. Not required, just me being a neatnik. 😅
Great tip!
The expander plug is not the small screw. It is a separate plug on the left of the crankcase behind the alternator. I've had mine removed by the dealership and they showed me the instructions for the procedure too, so I am sure.
That’s great. Link me to it please
@@MotoTingle I've only seen it on their PC, the documents are for the service shops and they don't share them.
@@Milen4u I’ll contact my local service centre
Hello! First off, great video! Just what I needed.
About measuring the oil level, on page 169 of the BMW owners manual it says to put the stick in, but not tighten it for accurate measurement. This would mean that the level you measured is actually lower than what you saw.
I agree. But the difference is in ml, no more than 30ml my local dealer informs me. Given I measured the quantity I added, I’ve. I need to check the dip stick as I’m sticking to the quantity BMW specify. But I will check the dip stick every few months to see if any is burnt off. And I’ll use your recommendation, so thank you!
@@MotoTingle 30ml sounds like not so much. Judging by how far it screws in. Roughly half the size between min and max, it should be about half the difference between min and max (or there about).
I do agree though that filling the recommended amount is the way to go!
@@joepi5 I’ll do a next service video in time and we can see how much oil is burnt off in 12 months
UA-cam forgott the Wasser on the outer skrew
Hi have you any link to a windshield for the f900r? Thankyou
It’s by Puig.
Looks like you forgot the drain plug washer. I didn´t see it and the screw should be plain with the oil pan.
I did mention it in the description
Nice Panarei 😎.
thank you, was a gift i bought myself after surgery. it wears great!
Have you had any issues with the water pump? Some of the early models the water pump went bad between 3K miles and 8K miles.
No issues with the water pump
I’m doing my first oil change, the filter in the bike is not the same size as the replacement filler: the replacement filter uses a 76/14 filter cap; what size cap removes the temporary filter?
In my country its a Hi Flo HF160 Oil Filter or equivalent. Its 76mm wide and 63mm tall
Actually I don't understand why you check the oil level after the change since you put in the exact amount described in the manual...
I agree. It’s setup as a dry sump. So I check the level to see that the oil is circulating. If the level was high, it would tell me I’ve a pump issue. Hope this helps

Thank you.
I have the XR version on order, it's my first bike so I try to get informed. 😉 (even if I know I'll probably be obliged to have the oil changed at BMW's during the first three years of warranty...)
Still don't know why this engine is so complicated and the advantage of this...
@@vzmax You are really going to enjoy the XR, its a fantastic motorcycle. I am racking up the miles on my 900R and its a real blast
@@MotoTingle
I hope it is a fantastic motorbike ! BMW bikes are supposed to be top notch, after all ! A colleague of mine has ridden his (and still rides it) more than 105 000 km, this has helped me to decide to treat myself with this particular model which is as I said before my first motorbike... at nearly sixty ! I've just got my driving license ! 😊 So, unfortunately, my BMW will be powered down during almost two years to 47.5 HP... 😟
✌
@@vzmaxyou are about to have some fantastic adventures my friend
How do you set the computer after the oil change so that it knows an oil change was done? Thanks
You need a diagnostic computer. or... set the year on your onboard clock backward
What is the size of the filter removal tool?
76mm 12 flutes
Does the 1st sump plug get a gasket? The smaller one.
On my motorcycle, yes. On others i have talked to, they didnt find one. Plus BMW are now manufacturing with the smaller plug removed.
Hi. Good video. I just added 500mL of 5w40 Castrol Edge synthetic car oil to my bike as it was very low. It is not an MA2 oil. Is this a safe thing to do?
The issue is that car oils contain friction enhancers. Your motorcycles clutch is bathed in engine oil and may absorb the friction enhancers, leading to a clutch that slips or excessive wear to the friction material. The way I look at it, 500ml of car grade oil may be diluted against your existing oil and should not impact you.
Great video, thank you! What's the size of the hex sockets? Both plugs had a washer or just one?
T50 Torx and a 5mm Allen
¿Cual es la medida de la llave para retirar el filtro?
It was one I pulled from a set, sorry I don’t have it to hand.
Ciao, è meglio 15 w50 oppure quello che hai messo tu 5 w40?
Stay to BMW’s recommendation. The rating is to maintain the best life of your engine. Although the 50w rating is batter the 15w rating is worse.
@@venommurasame as a spark plug. 25Nm
Nice video , nice motorcycle
Thank you ever so much. I’m trying to improve my filming skills. A bit at a time
Muy buena explicación. Muchas gracias por el vídeo
