  • Naseeruddin Shah on rebellion, heartbreak, self-belief and his coming of age with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra The Arts and Ideas Club on 15 January, 2017.
Refusing to be defined by tags and genres, Naseeruddin Shah is not just an actor but a shape-shifter, transforming into roles with effortless ease. He talks with the honesty of an artist to his art about the most significant episodes of his life that have come to define who he is; a torn relationship with his father, experiences from his schooling days, the women in his life and having run away from home.
For his cinematic aspirations he credits the excellent list of movies, he was made to watch as a school-going child, which introduced him to cinematic giants like Frank Capra, Elia Kazan, Orson Welles and Charlie Chaplin among others. He also goes on to point out the dismal condition of mainstream Indian cinema and why he is against the current generation of art filmmakers.
He also candidly talks about his first sexual encounter and his experimentation with marijuana and LSD.
Naseeruddin Shah is an Indian film and theatre actor, who has carved for himself a significant space in the field of parallel cinema. He has won three National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards apart from being a Padma Shri and a Padma Bhushan for his contributions to the Indian cinema.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.
Membership to Algebra is by invitation or referral. If you know an Algebra member, ask them to put you in touch with us.

I don't have the honest courage to praise Nasiruddin Shah for the stature he towers to..yet can't help saying he is one person who held us glued to hindi cinema, from Nishant, Chakra, Junoon, Hero Hira Lal, Akrosh... We believed in the excellence of hindi cinema because of him.

If a biopic on Einstein was made, it would be indispensable to cast him in the lead, he would do complete justice to the role no matters who makes the film.

Bollywood was not applied by the West. It was a Mario Miranda application in his cartoon series for Filmfare named "Love scenes from Land to Land" with the leading lady Rajni Nimbupani and the Star Balraj Balram, Villian Bul Bul Brandy, Minister for Hair Oil and Petroleum P. Popatlal. Just goes on and on

Bollywood is not a term applied or coined by the west. It was coined way in the 60's by, if I recall right, by Mario Miranda in his series "Love scenes from Land to Land" with characters like Balraj Balram, Rajni Nimboopani, Bul Bul Brandy and least of all P.Popatlal Minister for Hair Oil and Petroleum

35:34 He talks about LSD. I always knew he had dropped acid because he has such a well rounded perspective on life. LSD really broadens your intellect. Steve Jobs took it too and he attributed his success in life to LSD
