Nice sporty hatchback the Polo GTI. The Fiesta may be apparently more exiting to drive but the Polo has much better looks inside and out and I found it more practical imo ;)
I was comparing a Polo GTi to a MINI Cooper S and the performance specs are so close and so are the economy specs, however I found that to get the MINI to the same standard spec as the Polo I had to put nearly £1500 worth of options on and then to add what I wanted on to them both the Polo works out cheaper, I have no doubt that the MINI will drive far better but to be honest I'd pick the Polo, I was looking at the differences as my mum is considering one of the two in the next year.
I have a 66 plate 5 door manual with the sport pack and it is absolutely perfect for British roads. I also a golf gti mark 7 dsg but take the polo on a Sunday for an end of week blast in the country
Hey Matt, I like your review on the Polo GTI. I currently am driving a Scirocco 1.4tsi just now and trading it in for the Polo GTI, I can't wait till it arrives, no doubt I will feel a difference. I went for 3 door, White, and manual. I left out the sports button though. Great vid mate cheers Car buyer and Matt.
no price cuts, but the dealer by me is doing 3 years free servicing , free insurance, free tank of gas, and free " wait for it " VW mats... but there is a Hyundai and kia dealer within spitting distance ..
Nice review, thanks, but you forgot to mention that the 6-speed manual has more torque (320Nm) as compared to the 7-speed DSG version (only 250Nm). Hence in real day driving, the manual will feel much more powerful! I am a big fan of DSG, just not in this Polo....
thug898 In the video it's not mentioned at all, hence my comment.... You can find it on the specs page of for instance Volkswagen germany (the numbers mentioned on the British VW website are WRONG). The reason for the difference is simple: the 7-speed DSG cannot handle more torque than 250Nm, hence the cap.
GTI_CHHA yeah the 7 speed dsg dry clutch cannot handle more than 250nm of torque but i cannot find anywhere where it states that it uses that specific gearbox if you could send me link where the correct specs are would be helpfull
thug898 Here's the link to the (German) webpage for the 6-speed manual (showing you 320Nm):www.volkswagen.de/de/models/polo-gti/trimlevel_overview.s9_trimlevel_detail.suffix.html/der-neue-polo~2Fgti.html#/tab=121dcd911c91d379318153c1c14ed72e And here's the 7-speed DSG (showing you 250Nm): www.volkswagen.de/de/models/polo-gti/trimlevel_overview.s9_trimlevel_detail.suffix.html/der-neue-polo~2Fgti.html#/tab=121dcd911c91d379318153c1c14ed72e|trimlevel=90fc2fe13c42f4498cf5c8ebd8e1c0b3
This is just my opinion but I think this car would have had more appeal if had been named something else other than GTI. By calling it a GTI it is going to be instantly compared to the Golf GTI. No matter what trim level you use, the Golf will always outclass the Polo. This makes the Polo GTI second best no matter what. BUT!!! This is a powerful super mini, a German one no less, that can compare to the 208 GTI and Clio RS. This car should be and is brilliant. And if it was the Polo RS or Polo Sport then I think it would be beyond brilliant. But instead it is just a good car for someone who can't afford a 'real' GTI, the Golf... Unfair but true, unfortunately.
Although I own and enjoy a Golf GTI, I can't help but listen to you. To this day, I can't shake the feeling that I would like to own a RenaultSport Clio 182. I never bought one because even a fresh 182 is over ten years old. But if I really wanted to buy a small hot hatch, then the Polo GTI or Audi S1 would be the proper choices. However now that I've owned two Golfs, a TSI and GTI, I can never go back to a smaller car. There's no end to the enjoyment that I can get from my Golf. But I will never stop thinking about the 182 and the fun that comes from small hot hatches.
Is it me, or if you put the same extras as Kia Pro_Ceed GT this will be more expensive? So, you'll pay more for "less car" with the ruffly the same performance.
I actually own the previous version of the Polo Gti (with the 1.4 Twin Charger engine) . In this video Matt says that the 1.4 version needed to be revved in order to get any performance @ 2:20. That is very wide of the mark. My 1.4 litre car has 184 lbs feet of torque at 1500 to 4500 rpm. Yes the new 1.8 car has even more torque (236 lbs feet) but the old car is certainly no slouch.
I've put a deposit down on one of these...and I am bored of waiting to see if my dealership can get one from another dealership. If not, I have a 3 month wait. F**k that!!!
Cannot believe the rear seat foam is all on show when you lift them up! Cheap and nasty. I had a Polo Tdi and saw it on that, looks a right mess. Makes you wonder what other shortcuts they make to save money. Does anyone actually make a good hot hatch these days? Fiesta ST build quality poor and wouldnt trust reliability long term. 208 gti, flat spots in hot weather apparently, cheap looking interior, what else is there? I hate Renault so rules that out. Abarth? Had two of them, great cars but bit small and feel a bit unstable at speed on motorway with being a very short car. Guess it will be big spend then for something on the next level.
I like the car but I can't stand chrome looking alloys. They look so cheap. I think vw think so hard about interior and engine quality and fuck up the more obvious stuff. I like it overall I just think it's a bit plain looking for a gti
Sorry, that ride doesn't just look firm. It looks jarringly rough. You can see it skipping over bumps in sport mode. Why do VAG insist on having such impractical and bone crushing rides on their sports models?

I tried one and did not like sitting so high that I was looking through the top 10% of the windscreen - I think VW are designing these cars for egotist midgets rather than normal sized people
+Quick Focus japan, Australia, new Zealand and many African nations also drive on the same side as the uk it goes back to when horse and carriages where used and why change if it's not broken if anything it makes more sense for a right handed person driving a manual anyway haha
it would cost billions to swap over, back in the day everwhere had to choose a side and more countries choose the right (wrong) side of the road then left. a sad fact for you - nearly all cars which have won le mans outright have been right hand drive. from ferraris and gt40s in the 60s, porsches and matras in the 70s and 80s, and the many others. though not many lately, mostly due to audi.
I think it's partly because we haven't been conquered for centuries. If your sword sits on your right hip, it's easier to attack someone coming on the left side of then road. Hence conquered people were forced historically to drive (a horse and cart) on the left- it was harder to resist their conquerors. Just a theory.
I really don't understand what's the problem with you guys about the sound being artificial through the speakers. I've heard you complain about that about many other cars on your channel. Isn't that just kinda a great thing?! I mean, it improves the fun you have while driving it without throwing a big and ridiculous exhaust system underneath that thing. I really wish more car manufacturers would do that now a days with every engine being a maximum of 1.4 liters with 7 turbo's on there. True engine sounds died a long time ago, and I think it's a clever way of bringing it back via the speaker system.
FretFreak02 The problem is the artificial part of it. The Fiesta ST and 500 Abarth both have a better sound with better technology that are not artificial.
The GTI model name is way off. The engine is a diesel-style turbo petrol with little bore and long stroke. Max output at 4800 rpm. A GTI is a hatchback under 1000 kg with an engine with a large bore and a short stroke, spinning way past 6000 rpm.
No front middle armrest!! How much extra is that? V.W. Make my head turn to other manufacturers for simple everyday likes in a car. Me thinks V.W. getting too big for their boots. Great cars but never value for money. Oh!!! skoda me thinks.
Nice sporty hatchback the Polo GTI. The Fiesta may be apparently more exiting to drive but the Polo has much better looks inside and out and I found it more practical imo ;)

you either use cruise control, or drive a sports car. these two are mutually exclusive.
Golf gti has cruise control as standard feature so your point is invalid
Thumbs up if you believe Mat Watson is the best possible replacement for Jeremy Clarkson at top gear!
FKarayev98 no ,just no .
FKarayev98 well... he will deffo do a better job than the post Clarkson top gear presenters

Kavas It's the latest English number plate.
excuse me, but what do you mean by "latest" and what's the benefit of it?
Kavas There's no benefit, it just says that this car was registered after March 2015.
Are CarBuyer and Auto express the same company? They both done a video using the same polo GTI
picklesrule69 CarBuyer and Auto Express are sister publications. The Polo GTI belongs to Volkswagen but we're sharing it at the moment!
Now that makes sense! I only notice it was the same cos of the number plate. I love my polo ;) Bought one after watching your review on them ;)
