Five Links Memories

- Ok, it's not going to win any awards, but here's a little video I've done to reminisce about my time living in Handley Green on the Five Links Estate in Laindon, Essex.... So sad to see where I once played with my friends now looking so run down. Hardly a soul in sight. Would love to see the place as it looked in the 80s just one more time
To think back between 1969-1978 , we brought this area to life, so much buzz going on then, we felt safe had fun and was the greatest time of my childhood life. Silver jubilee was awesome under the old underground garages, and we always played around "the black wall" which was the hardest thing to climb when being very little at the time. We had to climb on our bikes to get to the top. Several years later when we came back we touched the top of the wall with our hand, most surreal. Northey, laindon link , basildon old town centre will always remain deep in my heart. I was heartbroken to leave back in 1978 and to leave all my friends and school mates. I still haven't forgotten them.
We lived in Mellow Purgess about 1972-78 very happy memories of a childhood spent all around that maze of streets riding my Raleigh Chopper! Sheltering under the "arches" when it rained. A great place at the time.
Thanks for the great video.
I really appreciate you sharing this video Stuart! Please post more material if you have any!
I use to live in somercoates,in seventies, there was Always kids playing outside and over the park. So many memories, so sad to see it run down like this. Terry vasa
I lived in 113 Handley Green until i was 8... This just gave me goose bumps
I lived at 82 Handley Green from 1978 to 1981. My little boy at the time loved riding his hot wheels bike through the estate. It was pretty then and safe and bustling with activity. Such a shame the state it’s in now. Thank you for this video.
We used to do bike races around this estate, much to the horror of the locals no doubt.
I remember seeing the increase in crime in the 1990's. It was no coincidence that Thatcher had sold the housing stock off leading to cheap uncared for rental houses. Lack of care, lack of pride.
I lived at 144 Handley Green when they were first built. 1971/1972 I believe. Alcatraz holds many memories for me. Well done Stuart.
Lived at number 173 laindon link in early seventies. Oldest son born in that house. Sad little film
35 years.. My old manor. Loved.... And missed. Memories. 😊
347 Somercotes. 👍
I was in 103 Handley Green in the early 90's. Used to roller skate around the estate all the time.
Lived at 153 Somercotes from when they were new until 1980, had so much fun living there, great times,so many kids my own age. It was a fantastic estate in the 70s, such a shame its now so run down. In all fairness it probably will get pulled down at some stage. The reason we moved in 1980 was because the house was subsiding, so 40 odd years on I don't know how it's still standing😂
Blimey I lived in Rising grove and used to cross laindon link to play in Alcatraz as it was known back then, seemed to be kids everywhere back then and 6 weeks holidays seemed to last forever - fond memories 👍
Hi great video brought back many sad memory. We lived at 192 somercotes our house was at the end next to the field and backed on to the old people's block and we had the speed boat outside our home and my dad had the blue American limousine we left Essex in 1990 and our house was knocked down to build the new ones
I lived at 193 somercotes from early 80s so guess you was my neighbour at one point
We lived at 255 Handley green from new we have fond memories, my sister still lives in Newberry side
Used to live in great oxcroft went lincewood junior then on to laindon high road brought back memories watching this
I used to live in Northey laindon from 1969-1978 and remember having the silver jubilee in the underground garages. My school was millhouse. Great times
Really lovely video Stuart. Thought it worked really well with the music. Would love to see local community housing restored to it's former glory.
I lived at 193 somercotes from early 80s till late 90s, looks so bad now.
I lived in somercoates number 30 back in the 90s them move out to newberry side an im still there now great place to live but it has changed alot got to say ...
Hi notbad we was neighbours i was number 192 we was their from the 70s till 1990
I lived at 256 Handley Green until just before I turned 15. My Granddad still lives at Mellow Purgess. Used to love playing football & run-outs with my mates in the blocks and car parks. Hate how the place looks now with all the roads parking bays.
We lived at 255 Handley Green from New until 1978 we then moved to Great Oxcroft
Great Video, I think the five links was a great place to live in the 70-80's many proud families, I used to have many friends on the estate, unfortunately the design of the estate now attracts undesirables, and anti social behaviour, with many dark alleys and high walls.
Live here
IDo Animations same
My nan used to live me and I use to come her all the time i miss my nan so much and this place
Who else is here because of this video being reference in Stuart rees' book 'unofficial britain'?
Hi Stuart. Love the video. I lived in somercotes as a child. I’m looking for some images of the number 98 somercotes. Long shot, I don’t suppose you have any?
Hi samantha i remember you. I think i was in school with you and didnt you used to do a paper round
I think my old house (59 somercotes) is on this video but its a little hard to recognise, maybe a picture of another block would suffice? ;)
Hey Stuart, love the video mate! I delivered milk there as a kid. Hope you don't mind but I nicked some of your footage for my low-fi music video. I can add a credit if you like? Milk Boy of Alcatraz by Micky Denny and Leighton Jennings
Of course you can. Feel free to use the video! Glad you liked it.
I lived in somercotes all my life when I was there full of life and that miss it a bit like I see places where I used to sit and have a tab with my mates and where I used to play and that I remember the park on the green but that's all gone now i think it's full of druggers and gang wants to be now I think
should have filmed the underground garages from years ago
See my House. It was better in the 90's to. Lovells and Basildon Borough Council Have made it nightmare. I moved here it was safe green and friendly. Now its still all those really just not as good as it was so cant wait to escape first 5 years where good last 10 have been miserable. Shame such a brilliant central location.
Same thing happened to my estate, took my grandson back to let him see where his mum grew up, very sad, nobody was playing out even though it was the school holidays. When I asked an old neighbour why it was so quiet she replied many of the houses were bought up and let out to ex-offenders, it was too dangerous to let the children out to play.
