    This is a weird comment but I even watch your reviews when I’m not interested in the product. So clean and clear, information packed, accurate, and never a remotely annoying aspect. A lot of UA-camrs would benefit by learning this.

    Very happy with my PSA1 - Mine is about 1 year old and has shiny chrome knobs that often create glare from my lights so its nice to see that they have fixed that now with the black knobs.. When i first got mine it could not hold the weight of my RE20... took me a while to figure out that the tension is adjustable on the arm.. once i tightened it, it worked great.

    Marketing team at Rode: "You know what would make the PSA-1 cool? A black wetsuite with lots of logos on it!" ;)
    The PSA-1 is a really nice microphone arm.We use them every day with SM7B & MV7. The "+" really looks like added neoprene and branding.

    Thanks Curtis. I'll be replacing my old Rode arms with these as I've just bought a heavy mic. I like the solidity of this design. I noticed that Gerald Undone and Make Art Now's "Not a Podcast" gave you a well deserved mention as highly underrated. They classed you as essential film kit. I agree. I think you'll get a few more followers and thumbs for that. Thanks for all the great info over the years and also for your direct and personal advice. You go the extra mile sir. I look forward to the day when you are too famous to to answer my questions.

    The original Rode PSA1 is also solid enough to hold a lightweight mirrorless camera rig - they've been great for desktop streaming setups. I have two Panasonic G7 kit lens, in small rig cages, attached to boom arms via a ball-head out of the top of the cage.

  • @rockatanescu
    @rockatanescu 3 роки тому +1

    Awesome video, Curtis. Since I do own a PSA1 and this one looks identical except for the microphone mounting hardware, here are two tips:
    * The upper tube of the PSA1 arm is hollow and you can route an XLR cable through it. There is even plastic hardware in place to protect the cable from being pinched by the arm joints. The only downside is that you need to solder the cable at one end once you're done, but you only need to do this once.
    * If you don't like the branding, it looks like it's just a piece of cloth that's wrapped around the metal tubes. You can unscrew the silver rivets using a flat screwdriver which will allow you to take off the top and bottom joints (I believe that only the middle one has springs) and you can take off the branding.

    Hay Curtis. i work at a radio station and we use the yellow tec arms with SM7b. at my home studio i use the PSA1 with Sm7b without the xlr issue . what you can do and what i did was unscrew the bracket on the mic and turn it around so the xlr will be on the front side. that is a "commen" practice in the industry but not so well known in the new consumer market that has spiked the sales of sm7b in recent years. give it a try. Ps just take note of the order of the washers and the placement bracket forks.
    Side note: it does hinder the mobility of the mic slightly depending on where you place the mic , ither from above or below.

    Thank you for this thorough overview. I use a PSA1 on a home machine and wanted to add a mic arm to my work setup. I'll be using a very light mic, a small condenser that's sitting in a suspension, the Lewitt LCT 140 Air. Great for handling conference calls, gaming and recording. Small enough to sit between the Cherry Red-Silent switch keyboard and below my chin. The PSA1+ looks like a safe bet at a reasonable price. I'm already fairly happy with the PSA1 but this is a definite improvement. Better dampening, good reach, more flexible mic positioning ... and I'll be taping up the branding. Thanks again for the video and may I say, your voice sound sounds great to this dialogue mixer.

    Hi Curtis, i can't find a single video online that shows the setup that i want before i buy this boom arm. Does this boom arm bend downwards in any capacity? i am trying to understand if it can bend straight and down at a 90degree position? I have a sofa setup with a desk sitting right behind it, slightly above it I wanted to attach a boom arm on the top of desk, so as i am sitting on the sofa - the boom arm comes behind me and over the shoulder to reach me and i could rotate the mic position 180 degrees and talk straight into it. What I like about the "old" arm is the price to value ratio. But, the arm was always very loud. Grinding noises and, when moving, now and then a sound as if I was tapping the tabletop with my knuckle. From what I could see in your review, the new arm is the same, with slightly different joint hardware to install the microphone. The table mount looks different, now has a cable grommet, I like that.
    The branding is horrendous, I would paint or tape over that. Seems like a legit upgrade to the original arm, but I will switch to Gator Frameworks or Warm Audio Boomarms in the future because I like it much better visually and the features and reviews of it have won me over.

    I am surprised you got those weight issues with the M!ka arms.
    Have you tried adjusting the tension with the tension screw inside the arm? The arm should be balanced even with the tension knobs some what lose.
    You can find it in the base of the mic arm.
    Those arms are industry standard in the EU and they all hold SM7b's (with the Shure A26X extension rod which was made to solve the length issue) and heavier mics fine.
    As for the original PSA1, the main arm is identical.
    The only real differences are the mounting head and the cable clips (versus branded velcro on the old one.)
    I am happy with both. So for those with the original, don't bother upgrading.

    I ordered a PSA1 recently (though nobody has them in stock in New Zealand until the middle of next month, so it's almost a moot point not waiting for the PSA1+). The price difference is relatively large over here, and I just can't justify the difference. I like the extra rubber on the clamp, but that's hardly worth more than pennies. The biggest upgrade is the new head (and desk mount, if you use that), but the covers are pretty basic upgrades with ugly logos that I shouldn't need to waste gaffer tape on. The added cable management is nice, but all the minor upgrades don't feel like they're worth the major difference in price to me, even though I'd love the upgraded head and the bottom part of the clamp being rubberised.

I'm very "animated" in my videos, so I move the arm/mic around a lot and it's very noticeable in my videos. Maybe it will be good if Rode also produces an arm which looks like this PSA1+ but which could be used as a Boom Stand, during an interview for example. That's to say a much longer arm but which can bend over several segments. On one end there will be the "directional" mic clip (or even just a Boom holder) and on the other end, maybe a disc (to place on the floor) heavy enough to be able to keep the balance.
    Classic boom stands are very heavy and are not made to be transported easily. If the proposal is reasonable, I hope Rode will read my comment ^^

    General boom arm question: when not in use, how should you position the arm? I take the mic off, should I take the shockmount and windscreen off too? I leave the arm at 90 degrees, but should I move it to 180 when not in use? Does baby-ing the arm preserve the springs significantly, or is it not worth the hassle? I have a Blue compass, which is probably fine, but I'm curious

    • @reinhardkotze8053
      @reinhardkotze8053 3 роки тому +1

      so from personal experience the more you fiddle with it the more chances there are for damage. modern-day kit is so well build, if its not abused or recklessly handeld ither option should be fine. "bending " the arm down to somewhat 180 is always a good idea, it takes tention off and it also takes up less room. in your case removing the mic might make the arm spring open i guess. if you don't need to move the mic to different locations or if its not in the way i would'nt take it off every time. and leaving the mic in the shock-mount is in my view safer if you take it off the arm its just like a little bubble surrounding it.
