No the reason is that axe does more damage but has a long cool down. Swords can hit twice as fast as an axe however when sprinting and hitting someone holding up a sheild there is a 75% chance to disable their shield for 5 seconds. So dream disabled the sheild first and then started using the sword to hit then fast. However both have the exact same reach.

I dont think Dream is being cocky there he was trying to use mind games with them and leave them alone to gear up, it has been Dream's underrated outplays where he out bluffs everyone to have an upper hand in disadvantageous situations.

A stone iron and diamond axe deal 9 damage per hit while an iron sword does only does six. However dream used both as swords can attack twice as fast as axes and the axe has a 75% chance of disabling the shield when sprinting. So dream first disabled the shield then used the sword to quickly hit them multiple times doing a lot of damage.

stone axe does 9 damage per hit but is slower to recharge, iron sword does 6 but is faster to recharge. per hit, the stone axe does more, but per second the iron sword is better (roughly 10 damage per second if you round up a bit, compared to the stone axe's 7 dps).

Here some knowledge for you Dream is using sward and axe combo he stunt hunters shield and hit them with sward since axe take time to relax and sward take less time
