I think 6th, 7th and 8th books should all be their own thing. 6th edition book had daemons, but lacked Dragon Ogres, Trolls, Ogres and Giants since those were in the Beasts of Chaos book. Every Tzeentch hero and lord was a sorcerer and for the last time you could have beasts, daemons and mortals in the same army. Only 2 special characters, but more were released in other publications. 7th edition brought new units; Warshrine, Forsaken and Hellcannon. Hellcannon was the only one of those that had a model (it came originally in Storm of Chaos book, so it is playable in 6th too) Eye of Gods table was back. 10 special characters! Warriors of Chaos gained a 2nd attack 8th edition brought even more new units. Hellstriders of Slaanesh, Chimera, Gorebeast Chariot, Slaughterbrute, Skullcrushers of Khorne and Mutalith Vortex Beast. All the 10 special characters from 7th edition are back with nothing new. Now if we look what was available with 8th edition book and look what's available in The Old World, we've lost Hellstriders, Slaughterbrute, Skullcrushers, Mutalith Vortex Beast and Warshrine. Warriors of Chaos are weaker, like in 6th edition. What we have gained are thematic new lists that are more CROM and KROM and METAL. Lots of new Marauder options. And old Forgeworld models. This is a rare case where in my opinion The Old World is not an evolution of the 8th edition, but a step back and reimagination.
I think I loved 6th Ed BoC even more than I did HoC. I'm working on a list for TOW for BoC but keep coming back to trying to make it a cool list for 6th edition instead. I want a doombull of Khorne damnit!!
DUDER! The audio quality is so much better! And you are less shouty too (sorry if it is annoying but it makes a difference). I love your stuff! Keep it up please!
True, I used to enjoy the timelines in the old army books. Would have been a good way to cover what was occuring in the lead up to this period, given it's not covered otherwise in much detail anywhere else.
Ha! Too scared to tackle the 3rd edition lists I see! Therefore they must have won out of sheer awesomeness! Yes! I wish to roll up 5 random warbands and use them as my army with multiple gifts and mutations for all my characters and units!! Yes give me the the tables! I need the tables!!!
I'll be honest, third edition was before my time so I don't feel confident in taking it on. Whereas I had buddies who played both 4th and 5th edition versions of Chaos as a kid and played chaos myself in 6th and 7th edition. What would you score 3rd using my metrics?
@90percentgeek all 10s! But seriously, rolling up a chaos warband with chaos weapons and mutations and gifts etc from the first RoC book as the most chaotic thing you could ever do!
@@coljmuzz Roll on the D1000 table and take your chances? Or decide that as luck would have it you'd happened to roll something that vaguely resembled at least some of the models you actually had...
For once I was surprised, I really thought the Arcane Journal would win again, despite the fact that I am somewhat disappointed with it, the Wolves of the Sea list was cool, but I really hoped for some generic daemon & the Mammoth. I agree with the 5th edition book being the best (after the 3rd edition Realm of Chaos tomes which are great). I do think that the 6th & 7th books are quite different & should be judged individually, 6th should be reviewed together with the Beasts of Chaos book instead. Some clarifications: It´s Crom, not Krom. Hydra Sword multiplied the number of hits inflicted, but each extra hit was only on the initial model hit (just more times), so even a Frenzied Chaos Lord of Khorne with 10 (not 8) attacks, could not kill more models than he first hit, even if lucky, the Chaos lord couldn´t kill more than 10 models by himself, this was cleared in more than 1 FAQ, including in WD 222 (a must have issue for every 5th edition player). I'd also like to point out that Chaos armour wasn´t mandatory in 4th & 5th edition, so you could have a huge barbarian without armour lead your forces back then. Anyways, keep up the good work!
Crom feels like it should have a K 😂 and yeah I think we must have been playing the Hydra sword wrong - it certainly felt pretty broken, though even killing 10 models from a unit a turn is still pretty monstrous!
A buddy working ina small, local store got a signed copy by Tuomas for that 5th Ed thing.. Was a copy that was supposed to be given out as a price or something but.. he kept it, lol.. Good times.
I have a copy of the 6th edition Skaven book that was likewise meant as a prize but our manager gave it out as a reward for us all doing well over the summer school holidays.
@@90percentgeek I got interrupted. I'm expecting you to have a lot of love for 4th/5th, be somewhat disappointed (though in a cheerful way) in 6th and have bucketloads of enthusiasm for the new one. Anyway, back to it!
@@90percentgeek I enjoyed the video, seemed very fair-minded. Slight departure for you in terms of the outcomes! Hard to score 3rd as 'Army Books' didn't really exist in the same way. There's the list in Warhammer Armies which you'd probably find rather limited in itself. It sort of is though it does include minotaurs and beastmen (that didn't have to be goats) which are fundamental in my view. It also got additional variety from the 'Chaos Allies' section which apart from anything else included proper Chaos Dwarfs from before they moved to Assyria, some of which had Bazookas which is also extremely important! Then of course you've got the original Realm of Chaos books which would have to score off your scale for background as they were just amazing, wild things with incredible artwork etc and it was all new. And there was loads of it. How practical some of the ideas for things you could do really were I'm not so sure - for me they were mainly endless entertainment in terms of playing around with stuff in your mind. My army just came from Warhammer Armies though. And most of my Chaos models came in a mail order army I got shortly after the release of Slaves to Darkness. I did add some models (fleshhounds, a Bloodthirster, a Juggernaut) to the warriors, knights, thugs, beastmen, minotaurs etc from that, but the demons never saw battle. I don't like that the Norse got turned into Chaos Marauders - much preferred them as the Viking-types of 2nd and 3rd Eds. One day I would like to bring about the return of Halfdan the Chunderer and other Norse characters I remember from way back when. Something I like about the new arcane journal is that the Wolves of the Sea list looks quite adaptable into a proper (i.e. not Chaos at all) Norse list. Bit miffed that they used the term 'Huscarls' for cavalry rather than the general's guard of heavy infantry though, but you can't have everything. You could learn (or at least be inspired to find out) a lot more about history and culture back when Rick Priestly and Richard Halliwell were writing Warhammer than since, and there was also a lot more in there to laugh about.
Thanks! I'm planning on doing an Old World Battle Report refighting the battle between Warriors of Chaos and the Dwarfs of Ungrim Ironfist from White Dwarf 176 - just need to get my anvil of doom and Ungrim himself painted!
I have said it before and I will say it again, 6th Ed fantasy is probably the best tabletop fantasy wargame ever made. As a game it peaked.... 5th edition fantasy is more fun though, and TOW is a pretty good balance of both if you just play friends and don't take it too seriously.

Agreed on splitting out 6/7/8
6th into 7th was the removal of cross chaos play.
You really have to view HOC and BOC as two halves of the same book as you would do with ROC and COC.

Picking my Journal up soon!
Definitely worth it, the narrative army lists are very cool.
I play beastmen in ToW and honestly I find the Gaze of the Gods table to be a bit much.
Demons aren’t really able to materialise effectively in the old world at this stage of the story. Which is probably why they are absent.
