- Aerial footage of widespread tree and home damage in the PUMA area of Hawaii's big island, including a house moved off foundation along the coast from storm surge.
Thanks for the video, there are still about 9,000 customers without power in the area. There are hundreds of damaged power lines due to fallen trees. Fortunately most of the houses in the area withstood the high winds and there were only a few injuries.
This vid shows the damage in Kapoho Vacation Land (my home) and Hawaiian Beach Lots. It was filmed several days after the storm so alot was repaired by this time. At around 2am on 8/8/14 the storm started to rage, at around 3am the wind sounded like a jet engine and you could hear wood snapping, glass breaking, and metal roof banging etc. I lost part of my roof (A lot of people had it worse) and we didn't have electricity or telephone for 2 weeks. I tried to get out of kapoho the morning after the storm and found all the roads were blocked, but thanks to some very hard working puna people who brought their own tractors and chainsaws, by early evening the pohoiki backroad was clear enough to get to pahoa town. The other roads were worse and not opened until days later. Lava tree forest lost most of its trees, it's devastating. Thanks to all who helped us get to town the next day, you are all heroes in my book, and thanks to those who helped with ice, food, water, etc. the ohana here is strong because of people like you, mahalo.
Nice video, but as a Hawaii island resident, I hope you fix the mistake. It's "Puna," not the clothing brand "Puma."
Looks like there was some serious coastal wash outs of the beaches and land.
great video ...the correct name of this place is PUNA
I lived in Hawaii for four years and we barely even saw thunderstorms when I was there! Crazy..
That's a giant footprint!
I hope everyone is ok!
Those damn albizia trees - what a pest. They fell down like that in Hurricane Iniki on Kauai too.
How much snow did they get?
Its the PUNA district, not PUMA
It doesn't seem to bad, earth just shaved.
