    Wow! It's amazing to see how far your fig orchard has came along. In ground is the way to go for sure. Weve hit some hard time so our plans will have to wait. I'm happy just to see your progress and success however. Keep on digging and enjoy those huge productions.

    Love what you’ve done with your grafts. I will definately try to do the same. I’ve found that just a few in-ground trees is more than I can eat. But definately want the variety.

    I remember reading on a forum about plant cell culture where you would use the tip growth from FMV infected figs with the idea that it might not have the virus in it yet so you could cultivate a new plant without any FMV. The only problem is preventing that plant from getting infected from insects that have been on FMV infected fig trees. I have not tried any grafting yet. My Ischia Black is loaded with figs this year too. I need to get some of those bags.

    How are you amending your soil? Fertilizer? Great fig production. Thanks for the figgy tour!

      Thanks! At about 2:30 of the following video I talk about amending at planting -- ua-cam.com/video/chxzQxICd7Y/v-deo.html. That's what I did for all my trees. Mulch conditioned the soil and brought in the worms. Kelp and azomite helped bring in micro-nutrients and mychorizae helped uptake and promote roots. I fertilized every 4 weeks the first year with fish fertilizer. That's the secret to get lots of growth on a young tree. I also fed compost. Year 2 and 3, I did organic fertilizer and compost. And now I am going to try just letting the worm castings that come naturally from having worm life and good soil feed them. Curious if that's enough or if they need fertilizer now that they are established trees.

    Hi Natasha... will be good to see how your top 5 gigs compare this year to last year. Also. I keep my fig trees small so I can net the whole tree. Bloody squirrels and rats eat through 2 layers of organza bag.

      There is a good chance they will change! Nasty rats; maybe get some traps. Self Sufficient Me also did a video on fruit protection where he used window screening and zip ties instead of netting. That's definitely more durable than fabric but may be a pain to get on and off ua-cam.com/video/dERblAPWai0/v-deo.html

      @@EnlightenmentGarden My ant problem I no longer have, I grind in the food processor oats and preferably with maple flavor, it is very fine but not dust and I put it around the fig tree, the ants love it and you yourself see it as it is take it to the nest. Oatmeal when eaten swells and kills ants. Problem solved I don't have ants on my figs.

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому

      @@aliciaguerra-salazar5854 That's amazing. I tried many things but not oats. How often do you put it down? And do you put it down only when the soil won't be wet from watering? Thanks!

    • @aliciaguerra-salazar5854
      @aliciaguerra-salazar5854 4 роки тому

      @@EnlightenmentGarden I always check the soil in my yard and if I see ants I put oats preferably dry area because the oats expands with moisture and no longer works. The important thing is that they take it in their mouth dry and in the nest they eat it and they swell and die, so put it near the nest if possible. We are neighbors, I from Surprise, we must help each other. Maybe someday you will help me too with a problem. Your videos are fabulous. If it works for you as it works for me, make a video about this, for others to help too.

    Impressive fruit set!
    If you can grow Black Madiera in Arizona then I have hope in Texas. I tried some cuttings earlier in the year but they didn't make it. Any recommendations on where to get some healthy, strong BM cuttings? Also, would you rather graft or root the cuttings? Thanks!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому

      Thanks! BM grows poorly on its own roots here in my experience. I prefer to graft onto a vigorous variety. Might be a good idea for your area as well. figaholics.com is where I got my scion from. Harvey is the best. Look out for his annual sale in Jan or Feb 2021.

    Can’t wait to transplant my fig rub from our old house to our new one! But don’t know how to do it properly.....

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому

      I have never filmed the process but you should be able to find some videos on youtube for fruit tree transplants. Ideally this should be done in Winter when the tree is dormant to minimize shock for a deciduous tree like a fig. The main thing is to preserve as much root mass as you can and not traumatize the tree in the process. Easier said than done. Good luck!

      Hi! More water is my best guess. I'm not sure what your setup is. I'm presuming your tree is in the ground. It's best to have the tree bermed and mulched. Here is a video I did on watering fruit trees that may help you out ua-cam.com/video/YCPZ1xEVVCg/v-deo.html

    Hi Natasha, I got several cuttings from you this winter, and they are doing great. Even some have fruit! Can you tell me how much water you supply your trees? I am in Tucson, so much the same heat climate. I water daily, but I am not sure what time of day is best, and how much. My trees seem to yo-yo between watering, in that the figs will go limp and then plump up again. Do you water more frequently than daily to avoid that? Thanks for any insights!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому

      Great to hear! Did you root them or graft them? If rooting they are probably still small and need frequent daily low volume waterings. That's what I did on my 1 gallon starts in ground initially. My rule of thumb is to give the plant a volume equivalent to a container if they were in one. On timing, I still like early morning but if they are drying out by evening, hit them again. They really should never be left to dry out when young.

    • @lindamartino238
      @lindamartino238 4 роки тому

      Good to know. I rooted the cutting I purchased from you and are doing great in their pots. I hope to put in-ground in the winter. I have a few other in-ground trees that are only about 2 years old, where I am experiencing this fruit is yo-yoing. So, I am curious about your 2-3 year old fig trees and how much water you are providing. Perhaps, they are still too young for weathering these 100 degree temps right now?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому +1

      @@lindamartino238 Sure; my watering schedule right now for the 3 year old trees is 25 gallons twice a week. For a two year old tree I was doing 15 gallons three times a week. A lot of this depends on soil drainage, light exposure, mulch etc so you may have to play with it to find the magic number. Here is my watering video which may help ua-cam.com/video/YCPZ1xEVVCg/v-deo.html

    I sold my home on an acre in Gilbert and moved to Mesa in a new neighborhood that was formerly an orange grove last year. My home sets on an east west exposure. I put in a nice fruit tree section of 15 trees on the west side with full sun. I have 12ft on the east side between a block wall and my home, morning sun and full afternoon shade. What fruit would you suggest on the east side? I already have 2 peach, 2 apricots, plumb, Pluot, nectarines, 3 guavas, passion fruit, lemon, lime, papaya, and 3 figs (viotet de Bordeaux, Flanders, and little ruby fig). I have plenty of oranges already. What do think would produce great fruit under these east side yard conditions? I would like some more figs, will they produce with full afternoon shade? Loquat is on my list potentially, I have room for about 4 to 6 trees. Suggestions? Thank you!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому

      Hi! Sounds like you have a nice orchard going! Bananas, white sapote, aprium are not on your list and would work well on the east side. Loquat would be ideal there. Avocado would be another option for an afternoon shade location. If that side gets 8 hours of sun, a fig should do fine there as well.
