    Thanks for all your informative videos! I chose Chicago Hardy for Northern California also 9B. Wasn't too hard to find one yet had to order it from outside California. Seems to be underrepresented here probably because of the name. As you say it seems overlooked but rated highly everywhere. Thanks again!

    I'm looking forward to cutting season this year. Definitely getting a Socorro Black if possible and MBVS or Sao Miguel Roxo. I managed to pre-order some Smith cuttings and a few others (Nero 600m, Sweet Joy, UCR 278-128). Have you had any luck with Smith or Italian 258? They seem to be massively popular with some individuals.

      SB is worthy and amazing in dry climates! Smith and I258 have done nothing as in I've gotten zero decent ripe fruit to try here. They may do well elsewhere but not in PHX. Best wishes on completing your wish list!

      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks! I am not knowledgeable on growing figs in your zone. Ross Raddi is a better bet for direction. Strategy changes when you are in a colder zone and emphasis is on early to ripen figs/breba producing varieties. I-258 and Smith have been completely unproductive here so far but may be good for your zone. CH and BM (or better yet the earlier and more productive Figo Preto) are great choices!

      Thanks! Interesting; I wonder how many of those growers garden here in AZ 9B. I certainly see the similarities but in my experience they perform/taste remarkably different in my climate with SB surpassing BG. I would not be surprised if once they were the same but nature evolves and fig varieties are capable of change based on climate. Happy gardening!

    Hi: Thank you for your video. I started collecting figs 2 years ago with about 30 fig varieties. I am in NC in zone 7b and my major concern is how early the figs produce since by mid October is too cold to enjoy any fruits.

      @EnlightenmentGarden  Рік тому

      Hi! Makes sense! Your top 10 will be very different than mine given you are in a cooler climate. Unlike here, early ripening and varieties with a breba would be best. Mt. Edna type figs generally check the productive and early box and are quite tasty.

    Your video helped me a lot choosing my cutting veraities My climate has intense heat like yours in the the summer but much milder frost free winter, besid mb fp I ordered Adriatic gh, strawberry verte, i258, Emalyns purple I've seen you've grown most of them any thoughts in their heat tolerance, productivity &, taste

      Glad to hear! Adriatic JH only produced one crop for me it's first year and was not top tier for me. i258 has never produced for me. It seems to drop its figs. I don't think my SV was true to type but if it is, I was not impressed. It dropped most of its fruit and those few that did ripen were mediocre. Alternatively, panache is a good hot climate variety that will produce well and you should get multiple crops given your winter is mild. I'm not familiar with EP. Hope that helps!

    I really liked your video.
    Myself is a producer of figs in Cyprus having more than a hundred varieties in my 5800 square meters garden.
    Heŗe in Cyprus we have a big problem with high temperatures in summer.
    More than 40 degrees is usual thing in summer and above 30 degrees for more than five months June to October.
    Today was 30 degrees and it is October 21.
    The good thing is that I have varieties that ripen figs until the beginning of January.
    From the late varieties that I have the so called Cypriot Shimoniatiki a local variety here in Cyprus ripens figs until early January.
    On the other hand fioro
    de ruvo gives me the preba corp in late May early June and the second corp in early July.
    Varieties such as Napolitana Negra , Smyrna black and White.
    Vassilika black, Vassilika Melissi, Vassilika White,
    Bursa black,laitziani,etc.are some of the figtrees of my collection.

      Thanks for stopping by and sharing details of the varieties you grow! It sounds like we have similar weather as figs will ripen in my area until the end of December but then in January frosts come and the trees go dormant. This past summer, we had record heat with more than 30 days over 46 Celsius. Regular watering helped the figs ripen despite such dry hot air (humidity was 10% or less). Happy gardening!

    Thank you for the video. Just one thing -- your Bourjasotte Grise is miss-labeled.
    The Grise meaning in Franch is grey but your fig is yellow. BG is very close in color and taste to Col de Dam Grise(we have both of them in our collection)

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  3 місяці тому

      I appreciate it. The BG that I grow can take on different skin tones depending on the season (summer vs fall) and ripeness here in the desert with our extreme temps. Admittedly, this was a bad representation so I understand where your comment is coming from. I have more recent videos on the BG I grow where the dark tones develop on the skin. I acquired this plant from a very reputable source and believe it is true to type but of course, anything is possible.

    Thanks for this informative post. I’m in Calif East Bay zone 9B with three common local nursery trees less than 1 yr old- ya newbie- Violet de Bord , Tiger Panache, Black Mission. You gave VdB 331. Can you rate my other 2 ?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks--and great varieties! IMO, Panache is a great sugar berry variety--a 4 in taste with roughly 35 grams on size (2) and production averages around 6 per branch (2). Panache favors vegetative growth and struggles to ripen two quality crops per year in the ideal climate so production overall suffers (0 ). Overall I'd say PT is 6 (P=0, T= 4 and S= 2). Black Mission on taste is average (2), production is ideal after 3 years (2) and size is around 30 grams (2) so that would be 6 overall. Again, totally subjective! There is nothing wrong with what you have--will do well and very nice varieties!

    • @LemmingsRun
      @LemmingsRun 4 роки тому +1

      Enlightenment Garden I bought all 3 last Feb so coming up on a year here’s what I noticed: the VdB produced 10 figs first season. The Panache produced none but most all the leaf nodes have two bumps. So expect figs next season The Blk Miss was just aggressive vegetative growth throwing up shoots from the base like mad and all the leaf nodes have just a single bump so prob no figs next season
      🙏🙏🙏

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 роки тому

      @@LemmingsRun Sounds right! VdB is productive young and will produce quality fruit. BM will be reliable in time and can pump out 3 crops and PT will also be reliable in years to come but only count on one crop -- the taste will be worth it though!

      Hi Tom--there are over 700 varieties of common figs. Skin color, pulp color, size, size of the eye, shape, leaf shape, ripening time, etc can all help narrow it down but there are so many that look nearly identical. I'd suggest posting in the ourfigs.com forum along with pictures of ripe fruit. There are many people in there with far more experience than me that may be able to ID it.

    Not trying to be mean. Not trying to criticize. I am really not. I just don't get it.
    So if a fig tree produces the best 5 and is really big 5 but tastes like poop, you still give it a 10? I would give it a zero. I think you might want rethink your scoring system. Does anyone else agree?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  10 місяців тому +2

      Did you watch the introduction? As I mentioned out the gate, taste ranking on figs or any fruit is purely subjective as are scoring methods. I don't know how to make that any clearer. I was merely putting some criteria into the score where I could. Is it perfect? Not at all. However, since I provide ratings at each level (taste, production, and size), viewers can easily see scores in each area. Size has the lowest weight at 3 points. I would not take a rating video so seriously as these are solely on personal preference. Agreed; taste matters more than size and in my more recent top 10 video, taste is my only criterion.
