MUST SEE: SNAKE ATTACKS RABBIT FROM BEHIND (Myakka, FL)

- Trailing through Lower (Little ) Lake Myakka, FL, I found myself witnessing feeding time between a eastern diamondback rattle snake and a Florida brown rabbit. I have walked this trail several times now, but this was the first time that I came across a snake, not to mention a 6 foot rattle snake. I'm pretty sure the rabbit had been injured (perhaps bitten by the snake) before I witnessed the attack.

By observation it appears the rabbit has already been bitten by the snake and the snake is just following it until the rabbit gives up the ghost.

All of you guys saying he could've helped the rabbit are wrong. It's obvious the rabbit was already envenomated prior to the video since it was abnormally slow and spasming. In the description the uploader posted it clearly states that the rabbit was already acting like it was bitten prior. Even if he did rescue the rabbit it would've succumbed to the venom regardless. Sad but true. Also you guys are assholes for wanting to deny the snake his hard earned meal, it doesn't matter how cute the rabbit is. The snake still worked hard to kill the rabbit so it could eat it.

I live in texas and have been an outdoorsman my entire life. I can validate for everyone watching this video that is a massive rattlesnake. I've come across probably 100 + and have seen maybe 2 or 3 at this caliber. awesome video, thanks for posting. and for who ever is reading this comment there's a species of snake in texas that actually kills and eats rattlesnakes. They are called blue indigo and they are much bigger than this snake. check it out on UA-cam it's pretty dam cool.
Clay Gillespie , The blue indego & the Texas blacksnakes are actually KINGSNAKES. Which come in a multitude of colors & sub species. ALL are designed to hunt down & kill/eat rattlers. They have a natural immunity to venom & are the counter balance to the vipers. Really pissed me off while living in Texas to see the morons killing EVERY snake they saw. They were killing the very snakes that were PROTECTING them from the venomous ones.
Good tip Clay, thanks, I'll look. I was pretty impressed that the snake in the video was going to eat that whole entire damned rabbit in one gulp, wow, thanksgiving and Christmas dinner combined. Should last it a long time. I learned, like you, that if one is going to claim to appreciate nature, it makes no sense to pass judgement on animal behaviors based on a human moral code. However it does seem to make more sense to interpret it terms of the lack of morality of some people. NO morals, ethics, hesitation, just survival. Sobering considerations. I'm likewise an outdoorsman, and its my privilege and pleasure to live out in the open beautiful Sonoran desert. Noting edible goes to waste, ever, and by that I do include things that most humans would never consider edible. I've been surprised a few times.

Ok for those of you saying he should have saved the rabbit, not only was the rabbit ALREADY bitten beforehand, and not only is it just wrong to deny the snake of its kill just cuz the rabbit is cute, but, if you’d use your brain for a second, who in their right mind is going to try to go take an already dead rabbit from a (might I add, notably venomous) RATTLESNAKE??
They will then go on to say some crap about morals or something knowing if it were a bird, reptile, squid, obscure mammal or insect they would not care. They also don't care for the eater.
The worst thing in this video is you walking up to that snake halfway through his meal for survival. Other than that you captured an incredible moment. BTW, people, they don't call it a food chain for nothing.

Thanks for all the views and comments (even from so-called haters). Just wanted to say a few things from my perspective. For the record, the video was shot as is, without special effects, manipulation and absolutely no (other than the camera) influence on the animals. I understand that it may not be easy to watch video, but this activity is 100% natural and could teach a thing or two about nature. Look at it from an educational objective point-of view and refrain from judgement. Thank you for your viewership and enthusiasm.
Thank you Jeremy, your observation of the event is exactly correct, this is life in the wild. And regarding the nice people who have negative judgment, what you see in the video takes place every day in the rabbit and rattlesnake environment.
Rattlesnakes have their own predation to deal with in the wild. They are preyed upon by; eagles, hawks, crow/raven, wolf, coyote, fox, wild boar, mountain lion, bobcat, skunk, raccoon, weasel, other snakes -- all of which dine on the rattlesnake for survival... it's life in the wild.
And there is one more predator, and is by far the *most* destructive to the rattlesnake of all... it's no secret... the worst predator of the rattlesnake is man. Rattlesnakes die at the hand of evil men day in and day out for no reason and complete abandonment and respect of nature.

Absolutely beautiful snake! Definitely looks like the rabbit had already been bitten.
People always seem to be quick to kill a rattlesnake when they come across one. If you ever see one in the wild, they're usually trying to get out of your way. Just give them their space. I worked with a survey crew for 2 years in college. We would see them a lot. If we surprised one and it coiled, we would just take a few steps back, it would calm down, and it would haul butt to get out of there.

From the very beginning of this video the Rabbit had already been bitten and injected with venom by the snake. His slow movements and then collapsing and kicking shows this. People are asking, "why didn't you save the rabbit?" It was already too late. Plus, nature shall take its course my friends.

I've been camping in Myakka State Park and the place is like a zoo. Deer and Hogs everywhere. The lake is full of giant bass. Amazing place

I know it would have taken quite a long time, but it would have been interesting to see the snake down the rabbit. That's a pretty good size meal for that snake.

With pet snakes it's said not to feed prey that's more than 1 1/2 times the width of the snake but they can eat prey that's wider than that.

Even though I love animals and I hate to see anything die I want to study animals someday so seeing nature happen so up close is really interesting. For everyone saying you would kill the snake and saying the guy recording is a bad person. I find it would be worse to interfere with it. Just think if that snake has others to feed if he would have stopped the snake all the other snakes would have gone hungry. I mean seriously do you only think about the cuter animals. Most reptiles don't feed other reptiles, I think there may be one lizard species that brings food to its babies. There's at least one species of rattlesnake, the arizona black rattlesnake, that cares for her young after they're born. The babies stay with their mother for up to two weeks after they're born and the mother snakes will babysit each others babies, there's pictures of a pregnant arizona black rattler guarding her nestmate's babies
Leave the damn snake alone to eat, if you stress it out by simply being there it will vomit up it's food which will probably kill the snake and then the rabbit would have died for nothing.

Wow, that was interesting. Very big Eastern Diamondback Rattler and a nice find. Though I would not get that close either. They are VERY dangerous and now in this video you see how quickly their venom immobilizes the prey.

Some of the biggest Eastern Diamondbacks in the world are found right there in Manatee county. I remember my buddy in Mill Creek finding one much bigger than this . Seeing a Diamondback in real life is pretty cool

Yes it is because viper venom works a little slower than other snakes so to reduce the risk of injury they let go.

Try Australia buddy, North-West QLD or along the East coast in NSW. We have Eastern Browns and Funnel Web spiders. Both will kill ya in minutes.
The bunnies get intoxicated from eating the fermented fruit of the prickly pear cactus that grow wild. The drunken bunnies become easy prey.
