Thanks for an informative video! One way to maybe interpret the negative overtones of the 8,9,10 (of swords) of the Rider Waite is to read them as a warning of what “not” to acquire, whether it’s in advancement, attainment, or completion: Such as with the eight of swords-“don’t allow your ‘advancement’ to become negative, or don’t move forward with complacency and disregard; or move forward but pay extra attention, advance but with special caution, giving attention to the little details you might not normally pay attention to. In other words, take the Rider Waite negative overtones of the 8,9,10 of swords and interpret the theme of the reading (in a positive aspect) of what to avoid.
Yes, I agree. Those negative looking cards can show what to watch for as you move forward. I think you have a good insight at what can be seen in those cards. Great minds think a like! Ha!
I really love your approach to the decks. Most people I know will say "Oh you can't read the Marseille tarot the way you read RWS " It's nice to find a teacher that says "Why not?".It certainly makes things easier for me.
Thank you for the clarification Sir 🥰 In my practice of 15 years of reading Tarot, all these negative cards just helped boost my reputation, though. Not a huge fan of RWS style at all. That heavy symbolic fluff is no use to me. People need practical insight. But most of my clients felt validated when I shared that they are having sleepless nights getting concerned with a certain issue. They only come to me when they are in dire straits and all these negative cards depict that accurately. There are happy tens also available and they pop out with ten of cups and coins. Normally three of swords does come up often in heartbreak scenarios and three of coins for creative partnerships or work situations.....and three of cups for loving reunions. My clients immediately validated and connected with what I shared. Since I read from home...and at a distance these cards become so useful since my clients are mostly in another city and far from me... mostly online or over the phone. It works. Huge help for me. Thankfully these sad pictures only come out when it's applicable. If they are happy, these cards never show up. In that sense they are quite literal like Lenormand. Very very specific. 😇 Somehow this deck knows what to show me.
The way i understand tarot, you can read only with 2 methods...first would be using numerology and pips-as-trump method...the second would be using pictures...When we talk about rider-waite, i think that narrowing meanings down is actually what helps, you just have *bad cards* and *good * ones...I know people are scared of that, but most of time tarot is quite literal, 10 of swords can be time spent in bed due to injury as well...since there is no wrong way of doing tarot, you could in theory just print your own meanings and those cards would mean that for you. This also helps because there is no need to reverse anything. But human beings always need to complicate things to make it more deep dont they? This is why i like rws and thoth decks..Thye are just simple to the point. On the other hand, if you use numerology and 10 is completion, it is not just that...It is also *too much of something*..so in that case, 8,9,10 of swords would be much of thoughts..And when you have restless mind ,you get anxiety...The only thing good to have in abundance would be pentacles, wealth, material things...and thats where u have 10 of pentacles. In fact 10 of swords would be something like this text of mine, too many thoughts at one point in time hehe...thanks Vince for video, keep it up!!
Great points to bring up. I have always liked the swords best out of all the suits but I can see why the visual gives them a bad rap. Thanks for the video Vince!
Eteilla was the first one to introduce card reversals, that is why his decks have keywords on both side of the cards. Thanks for the vids, you are a great teacher!
As per reversals, I've read that upright cards could be interpreted as the external world/outside influences-energies & the reversal merely inner-personal world guidance-energy-interpretations.
Good video that helps to think about the differences between Marseille and RWS. where do you find negative meanings or difficult outcomes when reading the Tarot de Marseille?
Yes the 10 of swords IS a brutal "snap-shot" - that I would not have symbolized as completion - but God gave his archangels weapons because he knew that you can't fight evil with 'tolerance' and 'understanding'! If a truly evil person met his just fate - then it could be a positive thing overall.
Thank You again Vincient for another fine video. How timely..My granddaughter will be spending the day with me tomorrow. I will be giving her her first deck and info in regards to how to use. However, this video was full of awesome historical info. I had no idea...I wanted to hear more.. Now I understand why some decks are only selling the higher arcana... I thought to myself..."That could be his next book" You mentioned that the meanings have changed. How so? Why? Who changed them? etc...The information U gave about reversal was interesting...I have heard controversy from readers about those who do or do not read reversals.... You end your videos " keep throwing cards" I say to you 'Please keep making fabulous informative videos" I am grateful. blessings ~ j ~
Thanks Jojo. More videos to come for sure. My new website Tarotmaps.com will be having my blog on it soon. Hope you come by to say hello and ask other questions. An exciting day for your granddaughter! Congrats on her first Tarot deck!
Thank you your channel is helping me understand this weird book & deck I found sitting unused on my mom’s bookshelf sense the 90s I’m new to this stuff & know nothing therefore I’d like to learn good habits = this book & your channel are both adding a full foundation LoL good thing learning has always been hard for me so the overload is normal This book & deck is called “The Tarot Of The Spirit” first published by Samuel Weiser 1992 then copyright by Pamela Eakins 1992 It has totally different pictures & no awards wands pentacles or cups = it’s fire wind water & earth My point is I was worried about being able to read any deck after learning from this one SO I’m saying a super thank you because your channel plus the print outs from your website have fixed that problem = Thank You
I guess that's what makes us all different. Personally, I think reversals add a lot more depth & understanding to readings, especially in divulging *which* aspect of a particular card is stronger at the moment. The imagery is *why* I read the traditional Waite & not a regular deck of playing cards, or the I Ching, which only deals with numbers. Rider-Waite seems to have stood the test of time since the majority of Tarot decks follow its depictions to this day. True, the 10 of swords is a completion but it can also indicate being held down by beliefs, thoughts, ideas or gossip whether it be self-induced or external (along with as you say, many other aspects, much of which only arrive during the moment of the reading through inspiration or intuition). I always cringe a little when people read the 8 of wands saying, oh... there's quick communication coming to you.... Well, communication is an AIR trait which is represented by SWORDS, like with the Knight of swords. The 3 of wands is another one, people like to say, your ships are coming in.... because there are ships pictured. To me the 3's represent the building on or moving forward with the plans/decisions of the 2's. The 3 of wands: *moving* on the decision of the previous 2, sometimes traveling but nothing coming IN... Acting, moving, wands. Just my .02 ✌🏼️& 💜 all!
I think the swords were probably chosen to depict the difficult side of life. Everything Universal usually has to balance out in some way and since life's struggles will normally affect us mentally first, perhaps it's a reason why Waite made the swords that way...just a contemplative idea. Thank you for your video!
Do you tend to lean to positive interpretations of the cards when using the Marseille? Not theoretical answer but how you actual end up reading them in a reading?
Ciao! 🙏
Hello and thanks for your comments. I do have about 35 UA-cams out there right now but more to come soon. Wanted to mention I incorrectly state in this UA-cam that there are no reverse meanings for the Major Arcana in Waites book Pictorial Key to the Tarot. There is. Way in the back of the book in a separate chapter. So I stand corrected. Again, thanks for watching and hope you subscribe.
@@VPitisci Vince. I have just bought a vintage Marseille set having mainly used the Rider set. Would you be able to recommend which way up was reversed in the Marseilles set, for example where you can see sword handles? Or would you say Marseilles set not suitable for reversals? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Strange how we read similar. I started with your deck at 15 but now know the French words for the cards although that's all. I had them stolen. I could only get the picture deck. I then felt more confused. I learned reverse as it said I should although it made it much harder to interpret. I'm from Roma gypsy and they used plain cards. My gran would say oh it's a red day if it was more 💓 or diamonds and a black day if more the others. I upgraded 30 yrs ago lol to tarot but felt the reversed meaning was similar to how the black day cards. Reading reversed can be a negative reading through my experience but it's proved accurate. I have myself feared this card. It was said it was the worst in the deck. I've been conflicted over this. Which card has been your most negative to see? Thanks. Would it be possible to have a reading from you please? It's very hard reading for yourself. These vids are great 👍
Yes these illustrations can cause a reader to make a bad realization on a reading cause of the depictions. So you must know the real meanings. I readers say with the ten of swords. Well u got stabbed in the back by someone loll I disagree with that ...but with experience and wisdom and development will understand the swords and. The whole deck and meanings. They should start out with marsielle. Decks and get copies of your books. Eventhough your teachings are from the rider wait

Hi sepuku. I like the way you think. I can tell you know the cards. Yes, they offer many different ways of seeing things. More videos to come.

Good point May570. That might be why Waite decided to make the Swords the way he did. Something to think about for sure. Well said. Best-Vince
They were inspired by the spades suit of cartomancy - the suit of problems and negativity
Tu for sharing your many decades of wisdom. Ty ty ty
You're welcome Jamie. I'm glad you liked this and thanks for watching my channel! Best - Vincent
Another great instructional video, you’re an excellent teacher! Thanks!

I like to think of it as constructive interpretations. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching too!
Would you make a video on writing on the cards or using some sort of warm up sheet? Thank you
