  • Our mama deer had one of her two 5-day old fawns bedded down in our yard, and we got to watch her feeding the little one and keeping it clean.
A mother fox wandered by them and, fortunately, they were like two ships passing in the night. Mama deer can easily defend herself against a fox, but a fawn at this age is helpless. We don’t want the foxes to know where the fawns are hidden.

We have one fawn this year, and we haven't seen with our own eyes yet, only on the cameras. The mama doe is keeping her baby pretty well hidden.

Cute! We have a momma and a single baby in our backyard too. It's fenced in so I guess they feel safe.

The deer and fawns are beautiful. This mama deer usually has twins and always loses one to coyotes - it's our annual tragedy (though not, of course, for the coyotes).

Holy cow, great job on the video! Been walking with whitetails for 20 years in Northern NY, I'm close friend/associate to a 5 yr old doe, & trusted visitor by association to several other local families.. they are very attuned to current events in their home, so much like outdoor cats..they know you, your routine, neighborhood routines, live right beside us as we don't notice their stealthy presence! We take away their habitat, they exploit our routines, landscaping, preimiters/barriers, etc.. majestic amazing intelligent animals. To be "behind the line" with them as they monitor human activity while they regard me like a buddy on their side, absolutely amazing to see their white but hair flare as they freeze/stare a threat, then they look back @ me to see my reaction! (Or to clear their Escape path🤣👍)

What a great relationship you have with your deer neighbors. We agree that they're very attuned to what's going on. When they're in the yard, we always know if we're about to be visited by a coyote because the deer huff and stamp. We only know our resident mama deer well - most of the others come and go (she's quite territorial). We are being visited by 3 beautiful bucks at the moment.

@@TexasBackyardWildlife Awsome! Yes my Zoe put the pounding hooves of doom into a show of force earlier this week, her 2yr old Ellie brought Zoe's yearling twins in, Zoe did the Terminator-walk @ Ellie, turned into a charge, she worked Ellie HARD..like a sheep dog contest but faster..never seen my 5yr old Zoe move so fast..40-50 mph sustained & cornering..amazing speed, amazing to see TOP GUN fighter pilot principles used to effectively use energy and maintain offensive angle while containing poor Ellie in less than ¼acre, in front of both myself & her twins.. was like watching squirrels bred with greyhounds, or when the ball gets trapped between 3 kickers in pinball.
Zoe racked up points like Jackie Chan..🤯

Poor fellows, they are the weakest animals and also timid ,they get scared even at small sound ,they know only running running but not fighting back or resistance to predators.

They look very fragile but they're smart and very fast. Last year, a 6-week-old fawn outran coyotes twice, the 2nd time with a seriously injured foot (he was hurt during the first chase). He survived, and his foot eventually healed, and he's still around. Our neighbors named him "Spirit". We couldn't believe that a tiny fawn could run faster than a grown coyote, but we've seen it happen 3 times now. They're amazing.

Yes, Niranjana, you're right. If there are 2 coyotes, they almost always get the fawn. We lose one almost every year.
