As a bass player myself, I really appreciate Jimmy Johnson. He doesn't overrun anybody aand keeps it right in the pocket and in the groove during his solo which I though was really melodic and fit the song perfectly. Like Lee, he can say something with just the well placed notes rather than tearing up the neck. He cooks.
Jimmy is a force of nature on bass and has IMPECCABLE technique, fills, groove, and TONE, the BEST-SOUNDING ALEMBIC ON EARTH(Jimmy and Alembic pioneered the 5-string bass)!!!!!! The great Anthony Jackson mentions Jimmy as one of the finest electric bassists ever!!!
IMO, this is one of the two best live versions of Rio Funk--very easy on the ears and not overdone....and yes, I can't get enough of Jimmy Johnson's awesome bass solo, always on point.
Jimmy Johnson's one of my favorite bassists. His tone is usually pretty dark for playing an Alembic but here he's really letting it come through for a change.
Brad Maestas I don't agree. Jimmy is one of the identifiable Alembic bass players and also instrumental in developing the Low B with Alembic for 5 string bass. Film and the B.B.'s has a very distinct Alembic tone, as well as his playing with Allan Holdsworth. The music it self may be dark but not his tone.
I totally agree about his tone. Often he is buried in the mix, by design, as he is a very supportive player. That said, I prefer a more "up front" tone, and it was a pleasure to hear him so clearly in this video. Amazing, tasteful musician!
Seek out Jimmy Johnson's recordings with the band Flim and the BBs. Totally accessible jazz, and Jimmy is heavily featured on so many tracks. Great stuff.
Love Jimmy Johnson's playing. Not only does he play with Lee Rit including his 6 String record, but also on Allan Holdworth Metal Fatigue record and James Taylor including his double live CD. This year in 2019 he is playing with Steve Gadd and his band. See him if you dare.
I first heard Jimmy Johnson with the Wayne Johnson Trio around 1980, a group that never received the recognition it deserved. If you have not heard/heard of the Wayne Johnson Trio, search UA-cam for the 'Live at the Comeback Inn' videos.
I'd never heard of this Bassist before, until today when I read an interview by my favorite Electric Bassist, The GOAT Anthony Jackson saying Jimmy Johnson is one of the best Bass players around. I agree 👍🏿
He played a great bass solo while staying in the context of the song with its chords and feel. It's not a shred solo (thankfully) and you can hear when Carlos and Jimmy get a solid lock and then it's magic. I just noticed Jimmy had a chorus on his bass when doing his solo only.
Damn, I've looking for this particular version of this song for ages! Thank you for loading it. Jimmie Johnson is a killer bass player. Love his technique!
I remember a session for one of my own records back in the late 80's where we had Jimmy come in to lay down a track. We asked him to do some slapping, and he looked at us and said - and this is an exact quote - "I DON'T BOINK". He's the most amazing bass player I have ever had the pleasure of hearing and working with, so as far as I'm concerned he can remain "Boinkless" forever! The rest of the band is amazing as well...Lee of course, and Carlos Vega on drums (R.I.P.). Was that Ernie Watts on sax? And Luis Conte on perc? Thanks for posting.
Johnson is killin it. Besides the original Miller this is by far my favorite version I found so far. The song seems to be a invitation for bassist to throw around with any syncopated slap pattern they got lying around which totally ruins the idea. This is great!!!
As a bass player, this can be true. Marcus played the original on the album, and his solo still reflects the song. As Neil Steubenhaus has said about Marcus, "sometimes it's only 8 bars, but it's a great little piece of music."
The Precision is the father of all . . . . I know that Jimmy Johnson has developed with alembic this 5-string bass (the definition of low B is amazing) but it costs a blunder!
Best version of the song with the best bass solo which just grooves so nice and stays in the chord structure. 2nd best version is with Abe being silly with Lee on stage
everybody is slappin and hammering it is almost a gimmick, it is refreshing to see a none slapping bass player like Jimmy and even if Marcus play none slapping it is sometimes a relieve
+Agustin Salazar Check out "City Nights" with Allan Holdsworth. According to me one of the greatest performed compositions ever in that genre. (If that has any importance at all.) Gary Husband composed it and Vinnie Coliauta on drums and the rest is history.
He cooks.
He is stirring up the pots and pans in this one, yeah.
He knows well that the end of the solo is much more important than the start! He is brilliant at it!
Flim is Awesome ❤❤❤
Ever since Flim and the BBs…the man
The sound of that bass is beautiful, love Jimmy Johnson......Awesome👍
Best. Tad
Jimmy Johnson is one of the most locking-in bass players I've EVER heard or will hear in the future. Amazing!
Seven years later and Jimmy still killed it! Goddamn that Alembic sounds good!
IMO, this is one of the two best live versions of Rio Funk--very easy on the ears and not overdone....and yes, I can't get enough of Jimmy Johnson's awesome bass solo, always on point.
My list of best bass solo for Rio Funk:
1. Abraham Laboriel
2. Jimmy Johnson
3. Marcus Miller
Jimmy Johnson .... melodic killer
Jimmy Johnson and the Alembic bass, the perfect match!
RIP, Carlos Vega. You were the graet drummer.
RIP
The guy playing the cowbell definitely seems like he is having the most fun here.
he is phil perry, and i "phil" him too
He’s simply one of the finest singers on the face of the Earth
He is a happy guy
It's been 10 years I'm listening this song, and every time the bass solo is kicking my ass. So groovy
The great Jimmy Johnson
The best solo... Forever
Horray for Jimmy Johnson: the FIRST to play a 5-stringed bass with the low b!!!
I think he stated that he played it wide open as a compromise for not "Thumping". So, you get the growl..
I totally agree about his tone. Often he is buried in the mix, by design, as he is a very supportive player. That said, I prefer a more "up front" tone, and it was a pleasure to hear him so clearly in this video. Amazing, tasteful musician!
Agreed. Jimmy is killing it!
Seek out Jimmy Johnson's recordings with the band Flim and the BBs. Totally accessible jazz, and Jimmy is heavily featured on so many tracks. Great stuff.
Jimmy Johnson attacks the groove on Bass. Great Player. Great Motive in His playing.
Great version of this song! The late great Carlos Vega on drums! Thanks for posting!
Jimmy Johnson... great great great bass player!!!!
I MET JIMMY J on a allan holdsworth tour . he was such a lovely chap to talk to .what a player
Love Jimmy Johnson's bass solo. I like it better than any other bass solo from other bass players with Lee. Very tasty
my all time favourite bassist in the world...Jimmy Johnson...👍
Love Jimmy Johnson's playing. Not only does he play with Lee Rit including his 6 String record, but also on Allan Holdworth Metal Fatigue record and James Taylor including his double live CD. This year in 2019 he is playing with Steve Gadd and his band. See him if you dare.
Jimmy Johnson....Funkaaaaaaay!!! A Groove Master..!! Love him..
WOW !!! CARLOS VEGA AND JIMMY JOHNSON AS LEE'S RHYTHM SECTION.
I first heard Jimmy Johnson with the Wayne Johnson Trio around 1980, a group that never received the recognition it deserved. If you have not heard/heard of the Wayne Johnson Trio, search UA-cam for the 'Live at the Comeback Inn' videos.
Awww Jimmy soul . Also the nicest guy u could hope to meet
Gideon Sikk agreed! Met him 10 years ago and he couldn’t have been nicer
I'd never heard of this Bassist before, until today when I read an interview by my favorite Electric Bassist, The GOAT Anthony Jackson saying Jimmy Johnson is one of the best Bass players around. I agree 👍🏿

Carlos Vega Rocks! He can read your scales when and when not to interfer! Shows the true groove of music no matter the genre is... 😊😊😊
That is such a tasteful Bass solo!
Damn, I've looking for this particular version of this song for ages! Thank you for loading it. Jimmie Johnson is a killer bass player. Love his technique!
i am a guitarist but that bass guitar player is a beast!
Everyone is a guitarist. Smh
Jimmy Johnson!
I love the version with Jimmy Johnson and I love the one with Melvin Davis. Both are outstanding, but totally different.
Jimmy Johnson , a true master.
Im still listening to this. Best version of Rio Funk.
I remember a session for one of my own records back in the late 80's where we had Jimmy come in to lay down a track. Barnaby Finch on keys. Brilliant - and underrated keyboardist.
Johnson is killin it. Besides the original Miller this is by far my favorite version I found so far. The song seems to be a invitation for bassist to throw around with any syncopated slap pattern they got lying around which totally ruins the idea. This is great!!!

I can't handle it! it's just too damn funky!!!!!!!!!
Love Jimmy Johnson!!
Jimmy's melodic bass solo so amazing, so conspicuous among slappers.
Da zuckt die Schulter! 🇩🇪
Then the shoulder shrugs!🇬🇧
ERNIE WATTS!! Wow.....
Is that an envelope filter on the acoustic guitar? I am interested to how he gets that amazing funky sound here.
