It's really so valuable to actually feel the fabric in the store. I bought from Beglarian a few times which sells deadstock fabrics and even though they had literal video's I still made some iffy choices 😂 (luckily it was cheap!) I really learned a lot from it and the second time I ordered there the fabrics came out exactly as I expected, or even better!

Haha YES!! So true! Once you make that mistake, you learn fast! 😅 I’m the same now-studying pictures and descriptions like my life depends on it 😂. Deadstock and doorbusters are my go-to too-less guilt if it’s not perfect! and LOL, even with videos, it can still be tough!

When starting, just accept that the first couple of things you sew will be unusable. Its just practice. Buy clearance fabrics (they can get down to $2/yard!) Or buy bedsheets from a thrift store for a couple of bucks. Use this fabric to prototype and practice.
Once you have a decent understanding of sewing, i definitely recommend using nice fabrics. Well made fabrics that are appropriate for your project will MAKE your garment. My first garment was a strapless dress. Despite all my big mistakes, the dress came out gorgeous because the fabric I used was stunning. The $25/yard price point was absolutely worth it.

Also don't forget, you can sometimes order free swatches of fabric. This is really important to do to make sure the color, feel and drape is appropriate for your project

Omg, so well said! 🙌 'Unusable' is the perfect way to describe those first projects 😂-but they’re such an important part of the journey. Amazing point about free swatches, too! I didn’t even know that when I started, and it would’ve saved me a ton of guesswork. You’re so right about nice fabrics-once you feel more confident, they truly elevate your work (and make even the mistakes look chic 😅). It’s definitely a long-term journey, but it’s so rewarding when you start seeing your skills improve. Thank you for sharing these tips-they’re gold! ✨

Thank you so much for sharing this! I’m thinking about buying a sewing machine and start sewing but I still doubt myself that I could make my own clothes and would give up mid way😅 with this mindset, is it even worth trying??All the tools look quite expensive too for me😢

Thank you so much for your comment! First of all, YES, it’s absolutely worth trying! 😄 I bought my first sewing machine in August with zero experience, and my first stitch looked like I was sewing through an earthquake 😂. But it’s SO worth it! There’s nothing like the joy of creating something unique and wearing clothes you made yourself-even when they’re not perfect lol. The key is to have fun with it. When I started, I tried beginner projects, DIYs, and sewing patterns to figure out what I enjoyed most. It’s all about experimenting and finding what works for you.
As the tools, I totally get it-it can get expensive , but you really don’t need all the fancy stuff to start. I began with just a basic sewing machine, scissors, and some fabric i got on sale. You can always upgrade as you go!
      You’ve got this! 💪😆
