Suggestion... Lasagna gardening combined with hugelkulture methods (old rotting wood and sticks). Tall raised beds, 24 inches or more, cardboard (you don't dig up the grass or weeds), sricks, logs, bracken, seaweed, straw, leaves, soil, layer it all....never dig or weed again!! Ever! It works. I have used these methods for decades....garden smart ;). Love your channel
Hi thank you for an entertaining episode. Brilliant to see the renovations but what hard work!!! Scenery, music and photography fantastic. 🐏🐑🐑🐈⬛🐈⬛ why?
Another great episode, thank you Katie and Scott. Definitely think the old slabs will look much better, hope you discover more. You have so many jobs on the go it must be very tiring at times. Loved Shona trying to get to the tomato plants 😂, she is going to be a handful. ❤xx
I’m loving your videos, they are a calming presentation of very hard but intelligent work. I am new so will be working my way backwards in them to get the full story. Maybe this has been addressed before in the chat but I am in love with your beautiful ‘working’ dresses with the distinctive plaids and split sleeves. They fit you so well that makes me think the are handmade for you. Are there patterns that come this way or are these also your creations? I also work outside in my garden on a hillside and would love to duplicate one for the freedom and beauty. Thanks for sharing everything you do and for the peaceful couples interactions. Blessings on you both on your journey.
Thank you for giving your clothing explanation! I was one that questioned your choice of apparel, and not in a mean way. I just simply didn't know about the insect problem. So now it makes sense. Thanks again. You're doing a lovely job with the stones. I really admire all the effort you have put into removing the old concrete and leveling the new stones. As you probably know, some vegetable fertilizer can help some plants and may be great for the onions and whatever else you plant. It appears that the tomatoes are indeterminate. It's a choice if you want to remove the suckers that are between the main stem and the leaf stem. If you leave them long enough, they grow and can be removed to be single plants on their own. I remove the suckers from my tomato plants so that the energy is directed to the mother plant. With your loving care I'm sure you'll have quite a bounty of fruit.
Tomatoes are very easy to start from seed indoors. Wouldn't cost you an arm and leg either. Also I heard on another u-tube video that Mother Earth likes to be covered. If you take seaweed in the fall, when your harvest is in, and cover your beds, then she is covered and won't grow weeds to do it. When the seaweed decomposes it also makes great fertilizer. Thank you for all of your lovely videos!
I have trouble growing any type of seed at all. I'm experimenting with growing lavender cuttings using rooting powder, and so far, so good. You are both doing a great job btw, and I LOVE the soft and floofy inspectors you have checking up on all of your hard work 🐑🐑🐑🐈⬛🐈⬛xx Teresa 🇦🇺♥
Katy great cowgirl hat, looks great on you. Can’t wait to see Scott wearing his 😂. Do you have a long term lease for the cottage? You mention the owner now and then. Just curious. Be safe you two and carry on with the videos. Cheers, Dale (USA)
I’m crossing my fingers for your onions and tomatoes Katie. I had a few problems myself with my container garden this year but hey ho, swings and roundabouts. ❤The view from your front door! I’m in awe!
Everything is really starting to look very homey. Love the wee hanging baskets and the front step looks much better. Funny how the animals are like the "gaffers"😊 checking on your work and progress. LOL
Something to consider if thinking about keeping honey bees,.A university down south,Bristol or mebbe Sussex found that the introduction of honey bees caused a reduction of native bumblebees. I was offered a couple of hives some years ago but refused after unearthing this research.
Another good video find it very relaxing never knew you had so many experts in gardening power tools and building work watching your videos all tongue in cheek
The onions look like they didn’t have enough light. If the stems are long and not stir, they didn’t have enough light. Onions can be best planted into the full ground. Or sooner, and on clay ground they grow the best, they don’t like sandy ground. I am Dutch, living in Zeeland, ( old Zeeland in the south of The Netherlands)with only clay ground and my husband is a farmers son who grows onions and potatoes and they love clay ground ❤️
You are both doing an amazing job , hard work , but it’s slowly coming back how it should look . Very relaxing to watch. Love the sheep popping in and out of the frame . Great music 🎶. 😘
I feel like coming there to help you plant! 😂 Are you going to try to fish there? I love fishing and would love to see what you can catch there.! ❤️ Alberta 🇨🇦🙂
This old mum eats the dandelion. They are the first greens that grow beautifully in the spring. I boil the flowers and freeze the broth in used soda bottles to enjoy all winter. Roots are dried and used for tea and the leaves are eaten fresh or added to salads
Yellow flowers make wonderful jelly. Can be frozen until time to use. Remove from green parts. Taste like honey. Starts as a tea. Lots of recipes on line .
@@Awenda18 antioxidant, diuretic, lower blood pressure. If you can’t find fresh clean dandelion, seeds are available to purchase and plant your own in your garden.

I love your cardigan Katie that you are wearing at the end. Did you make it? If so i would love to know the pattern?? When you come to processing the sheep’s fleece. And incase you don’t have a favourite product…. I use Power Scour by Unicorn Fibre. It isn’t cheap but it makes the job easy. I’m not affiliated or anything. I just like the product and had good results 🐑
Loved the video, thank you! One comment, who in their right mind would pour cement when the beautiful slabs were already in place? I very much look forward to seeing them all back where they belong!
Our mum used to make a eucalyptus based "oil" to put on our skin so we didn't get eaten by bugs when we were playing outside MANY decades ago. I have no idea what else was it in but might be worth an investigation? Oh... and it was in Tasmania.
Your onions will do better if you start them in 4 inch deep pots and give them haircuts as they grow. That strengthens the stems for when you transplant.
I remember finding your vlogs around this time last year.. reason being the Ferns just blew my mind they were so huge. Now they are coming back into season.. Blessings in your restorations and home stead plans ... ❤❤
You can make a natural insect/mosquito repellent using 1 part lavender essential oil & 10 drops witch hazel. Use this recipe for each drop of essential oil. Put it in a glass spray bottle & gently shake. There are other plants that can be used as well.😊
Some herbs can help you with the bugs bites, lavender is my favourite and I grow some many around the house, lemon balm is a good one too, I used lavender body oil and noticed is very helpful.
another amazing video! I think you said the new camera came a couple episodes ago, when do you plan on using it?? Can’t wait to see your beautiful property in all its glory!
What about a weather canopy by that door it will protect the door from the wind and rain. You can make the canopy beautiful with maybe a nice small creeper rose ??
I know you’re aware of the problem but for your last ten episodes I’ve had to re subscribe every time! Let us know if you get an answer from UA-cam as to why. Enjoy your efforts & content.
watering seeds from underneath makes more robust roots...........they also look a little leggy so im guessing they didnt have enough light and had to reach towards a window - they may catch up though........also worth sowing in situ because sometimes those catch up as well
Just a point of interest ( or not) here in South Island N.Z. Birch is hopeless for heating, in my experience it produces little heat and burns so fast, great for a quick camp fire but not so good for home heating I trust the Northern variety serves you well. Love the work you do. Thanks, Cheers.
You may have already but is there any native natural insect repellent plants what you could plant around the cottage at least? I'm in Australia and we have citronella plants that help. I guess you also have to careful with what is safe for sheep because they may nibble. Just a thought.
I am having the worst germination of seeds this year that I have ever had! It’s interesting you are having same poor results. I must say I was beginning to blame seed companies for such poor results!
Sitting here in Texas wondering why sheep are eating dry hay when there is lovely green grass? btw am I the only one confused about ownership of the house? Someone owns the island but you bought the house and land near it. But, you have to get permission from them about working on the house...they are paying for the hole in the wall??? I'm curious!

Not sure about that climate but here i direct seed/sow onions before it gets hot, they handle frosts and seem to do better that way
I've finally caught up! My little onions looked exactly the same but are now doing well, hope yours do too!

Your onions look "leggy". This usually happens when propagating inside. Having a light breeze blowing on them helps them to grow stronger stems.

Good video, of the Island,
Katie I use old carpet laid down over my weeds. Kills them quick. Love your series smart.
Hello again. Another great video. For areas where you have to cover stone with water leaks, start using hydraulic cement instead.
Perhaps some natural bug spray to wear. I don't like spraying things, but Katie, I'm sure, would be able to find a non-toxic, natural blend. 😊

Clearing that step and setting new stones was hard work. You guys must sleep really well at night. Or at least I hope you do!
Scott, you can also do some deweeding ... instead of just saying you know nothing of gardening 😂
If you cover those weeds with a thick layer of mulch, they will enrich the soil when they die.
Sean James Cameron had the same problem with his mail order plants. They replaced them . He lives in Wales.
