Best weed control I found is to tarp the ground for a week after weeds start then remove the tarp allow the second generation to grow some then retarp for a week then plant your crop
I did this 20 years ago, with schedule 40! Not the pale yellow junk. I like them because they last forever and a shovel won't chop them in half, the fittings are replaceable, I can remove the ends and flush the lines. . Mine did not crumble, fade or get brittle. I left them out year round with no covering. By the way, it's the same pipe your house water runs through..
I have been using a system like this for years. It is a good system and it waters my crops effectively. I hook my hose to it and water for about 15 to 20 minutes.

I have systems like this for both my wide rows & raised beds. I have holes on both side of the pipe. Can someone please explain how the system is made better by having the return manifold.
Linda, we've found the system you describe works just fine for smaller set ups, such as in a raised bed. When it's a plot with several rows, the return manifold evens out the water delivery, even when there are areas in the plot that are slightly higher than others. With the water coming from both directions, we've gotten better results. I hope that helps! Best, DFJ
Very nice transfer hand motion to words on the hole drilling description point! I priced PVC fittings and pipe for five rows 10' each spaced for carrots, spinach, kale and it'll cost $$117.36 plus glue. not terrible
Ive done similar with PVC for a couple years, sure, it works ok, but I went to drip tape like they use in blue berries and raspberries, and what a better system, more consistent, easy to roll up to get out of the way for the next till, etc.

Yes, indeed. Just in case we needed to balance or redirect the water flow is the water was delivering equally across the system. The return manifold seems to resolve all that! Best, DFJ
@DirtFarmerJay, You may pamper your crops on your dirt farm by “moisturizing” them… but most of the rest of us ordinary, “down-to-earth” folk just ‘water’ -or ‘irrigate’ -and fertilize 😂 🤣😁

PVC would be great if it didn't break down so badly in the sun light.
