- Ever thought of turning your chlorinated pool in to a natural pond? Michael Gillings, a passionate professor of biology at Sydney's Macquarie University has done just that! Michael Gillings: "Almost 12% of households in Australia have swimming pools - about 1.2 million pools. To maintain a pool costs $2000+ per year. If you swim twice a week in spring and summer, that's $40/swim!"
FEATURED SPECIES
2:36 COMMON NARDOO Marsilea drummondii
SWAMP HIBISCUS Hibiscus coccineus 'Alba'
3:20 BLACK TARO Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic'
RAINBOWFISH Melanotaenia sp.
4:15 HOW TO ... AVOID INTRODUCING MOSQUITO FISH, GAMBUSIA HOLBROOKI
The mosquito fish are introduced pests that Michael calls 'the cane toads of fresh water'. They eat native fish and invertebrates and don't even eat mosquitoes!
NOTE: If you get a plant from a nursery, quarantine it in a bucket for at least two weeks to prevent adding Gambusia and/or weeds to your water garden.

Finally! A pond without koi in it. Perfect!!
Its because Koi is illegal in Australia, apart from couple of states.
i love koi...what's wrong with koi ponds
@@wolverineiscool7161 They make the pond look not naturally, do you ever see koi in a natural pond ?
@@zed5682 I don't think making a pool look natural is the reason you get Koi in the first place. I'd love to put some Koi in that Pond myself
@@wolverineiscool7161 They are invasive species
This is the type of chaotic good thing I wanna do as soon as I own a house
This is amazing.
The only reason I'd buy a house with a pool, would be to convert it into one of these.
Nice idea
yes and to hide the bodies
@@wolverineiscool7161 yeah sure, that too.
You can dig your own mud hole
Me too!
Some great advice there ... your pond looks amazing. I love the idea of hanging baskets, logs and rocks around the edges.
Always wanted the opportunity to do this, have heard of so many people filling in pools to get rid of them, what a waste, this one is so beautifully done, looks so natural.
This is it, this is what I have always wanted to do for my painted turtle. Excellent work.
I would love to see the before and after pics of the pool turned pond.. The how it’s done process.. It’s really interesting
Do a search in David Pagan Butler, he teaches all about it
I had one of those water dragons hanging around my pool a few years ago. It was a very large male , and it used to take food out of my hand. Beautiful creatures, as long as you are not a smaller lizard because you are likely to get gobbled up.
I'd like to know more about that Lizard.
thebegining100 it’s a water dragon, we don’t have them in Melbourne we’re live live but I think they are common in Sydney and Brisbane, you can buy them as pets in most countries though
@@mysteriousgirl4438 I live in Brissie. They're common around most waterways in the area. Confident and friendly, they are a welcome visitor for many people.
@@mysteriousgirl4438 sounds mysterious
It's a Australian water dragon. It's crazy he got the natural in his yard, and they ain't cheap
Go to the Gardens in Brisbane city & you will see an infinite amount
I absolutely love this! What an incredible thing to have in your garden

Yep, gotta say this oasis pool looks so good 🤠🤙 so good that! 1 - 2 - 3 - wading in for a cooling down 💦
This is just awesome.I do love to make my surroundings like this. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful creation.👍
This is all I need in life to be happy. I don't care where I live. If this is my back yard I'll be happy.
you are so hard working....fabulous 😊
This video has inspired me greatly! Seeing such a variety of animal and plants (especially the Eastern Water Dragon!!) has motivated me a lot. Thanks so much for making this video!!👍😀
My favourite bit. Presume this 'water dragon' was the creature that swam to him for a feed. My uncle used to feed hundreds of lizards outside his dining room (the house was built amongst huge granite boulders on a farm in Zimbabwe).
Fantastic and lovely presentation 🏵🌹🥀🌺🌷💮🌸💐❤
Incredibly gorgeous.
Like a small paradise..love it..
I love this! He is so lucky....

That's awesome, I would stock it with fish and do a bit of fishing would be a good source of food to
Steven Stevens yes, and as well begin to stack other functions to serve the needs of other elements, such as rabbits over a section to feed fish, and as well Bantam chickens.....thus eggs, fish, meat, fertilizer,etc....and this would be heading you into PERMACULTURE !........Peaceeee
Excellent..
Lovely...

Lovely.
it is freaking awesome!!!!
wow it's lovely, I love it.
Well done.
soooo lucky
i d love to move to Australia
Wonderful 👍
It's really amazing and it's a very good project. I don't want to maintain my pool and want to turn it into a pond. I am wondering how the system works and how about the winter ? Should I also cover it and do the same as what I did with the pool?
When will the native Shreks move in?
what a goal !!
Amazing!!!!!
This is amazing
Let nature do the growing and we should be the maintenance guys🙂
That's amazing!
How awesome 👏🏽
Perfectly amazing 💤💥🖐👌atsuuup 👍
Wonderful look. I was wondering what baskets did you use and how did you attach them to the wall of the pool. Appreciate your guidance.
Wow this was a very unique treat !!! Absolutely Adore the pool Conversion into an Oasis for Nature & Aquatic wildlife. Side question: Australia has a lot of poisonous toads / Frogs ( Does the Iguana takes care of them ???) & Did u get the Iguana or did it Find the pool ??? AWESOME & FASCINATING!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏
I would add some edible and medicinal water plants though, like: horsetail, cattail, kang kong, water chestnut, and more...
If you look closely, it's corals from Great Barrier Reef. So much pool owners fascinated about an outcome if they stop doing pool parties and cleaning it. As far as conversions goes, they probably wish to get rid of a pond.
Amazing
Nice pond. How do u built it. Video of the builting process
We have a backyard pond but it has attracted snakes and blue Herron. The Herron ate all our koi. We’ve had to net it to protect our fish. How do you deal with these issues
Water does attract snakes, a method pet owners use to try and deter snakes from coming for the pets drinking water is to have a supply of water at the bottom of the garden, hopefully they then have no reason to come closer. In saying that, snakes will come in if they want, if you live in their environment you may just have to live with them. Heron's I'm fairly sure can't get at fish in deeper water, they go for the fish in the shallows, so pool ponds I would say are safe from them. Kookaburras and other kingfishers on the other hand would be more of a problem. This being a very natural pond, I think bird predation is just part of that nature.
Awesome
hello, very beautiful even this lake, i would love to know the name of this light green foliage with red stems, thanks
Hi great video. I live in BC Canada on the Sunshine Coast on the Ocean. I have a pond under our entrance of our modern house that looks like a lap pool. I would like to make it into a natural oasis that I or the dog could have a quick dip in as well. The previous owners said they tried fish but then the River Otters came (from the ocean) I don't want to attract them. Do you have suggestions for me? Thanks for sharing. :)
Nice
Great I love you natechur

I love pond....
Wow ☘️☘️☘️☘️🌱🌱🌱
Thats a cute gecko or whatever it was
Water Dragon, they hang around even if it's a swimming pool.
Please enable subtitles in the settings. Will be automatic on youtube. Brazilians thank :)
I just decided to convert my small swimming pool into a natural pond and was very inspired by your project. I have been unable to find anybody here with knowledge about this so I am going by the seat of my pants. I would like to know about controlling mosquitoes. Also I am curious about the hanging plants. I live in Tucson Arizona and the weather here is pretty hot in the summer. Can you give me some helpful advice and do you know anybody in this area who could help me out.
I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Madeleine
I also live in Tucson and decided to convert my pool to pond. Did you start? I'm still gathering info.
Bro it’s really good keep some duck also ...
The lizard is a pet??? Omg! But cant believe they didnt explain one bit about it
Is a filter & aeration system essential ?
HOW do u control the frogs or do u .
That’s insane
How do u handle snakes? This is so beautiful i wanna make something like this too one day! But my area seems to be in area where snakes appears once in a while and they attacked my pets :(
yes that's what i was thinking ! all the rocks and wood ... a haven for snakes
Lemongrass repels everything
How do you handle snakes? Very carefully, or not at all. Snakes are fine if you know they're around, unless you have a phobia, then you probably live in the city.
@@kevintango6567 you have obviously not been chased by a brown snake ... second deadliest snake in the world ..they live in grasslands of the city and the country
good
Stupid Question! But Considering..converting My unground pool into a Koi Pond! My question..would it be 'PRICEY' to repair the neglected pool 1st! previous Owner neglect over 30 years..i believe a tree...has 'busted' thru the 'liner'?..... cheers From Canada!
cool
What about mosquitos? I live in Florida and it's a mosquito haven! I've let my pool go before due to broken pump, and the mosquitos were unbearable! I would love to do this if I could control those little devils.
Envirotube was demonstrating this 6 years ago, four years prior to the ABC's remarkable discovery.
May I know the name of the music? It's really calming.
