The Top 5 Reasons You Shouldn’t Watch Sailor Moon Crystal (As Your Introduction to Sailor Moon)

  • If you’re looking to get into this franchise, should you watch the new reboot? Here is my answer!
    For those curious, yes. I have seen the third season and I am currently doing episode reviews on my channel. I absolutely adore it and think that it has fixed MANY of the issues I talk about here. I highly, highly recommend it and will likely make a follow up video to address my thoughts on it.
    Sailor Moon is owned by Naoko Takeuchi and Sailor Moon Crystal is created by Toei Animation. The manga scans featured in this video were taken from the Miss Dream Sailor Moon Translation Project. This video is made for review and parody purposes and any content shown should be considered fair use.
    The other two anime mentioned in the review are Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Yuki Yuna is a Hero!

    LOL at the dislikes. I agree with you 100%; I watched Crystal to its completion (wanted to give it a fair chance) and just didn't like it at all. The animation, characterization, pacing, ect. - none of it worked for me. And I was one of those people who was really excited about Crystal too. What a shame. :/ But oh well, I'll always love the original anime.

      +SailorMars768 SAME HERE. I was really excited expecting to see some good action in there with the Sailor Scouts going all James Bond and stuff, but the fights were literally a few frames and weren't really even animated. It stuck to the manga I guess in that sense, but I thought it should've at least converted to change it a bit so they could improve that. It's one of my HUGE pet peeves with the series. Fighting evil by moonlight? Not so much to be honest...

      +Sailor Sedna Did it bother you how the old sailor moon monsters were actually very creepy, and in crystal they just look like miscolored women? Like for example, the first episode of the original, the monster chick turns her head completely around, Exorcist style? That was freaky as fuck. Or in Sailor Mercury's intro episode, the chick is really really creepy. I was soooo annoyed at how stupid the monsters looked in Crystal, it was such a joke

      + *Sbaby: Did you...even read the manga? That scene never happened in the manga. The generals weren’t even established as their lovers! In the manga each girl killed the generals individually, then Venus and co blew up Kunzite in space as Sailor Moon begs her to stop!
      Also in Act 12 Venus was kidnapped by Endimiyon and Sailor Moon rushed after him to save her. That whole scene in the manga was the 3 senshi going to D Point to find Sailor Moon and Venus. They all try to fight Metalia with Moon present (Moon helps too) and watch Sailor Moon suddenly kill herself. Not a lame fight restoring the memories of the generals, they were dead in the story already. They were with Sailor Moon during the fight with Endimyon in the manga.

    Another Reviewer said it best "Sailor Moon Crystal made me realise the importance of filler episodes".
    The original Sailor Moon series had tons of interactions between the girls as well as episodes where we saw the girls acting in different situations, be it romantic, serious, comedy, etc, which in turn made all the girls more believable characters and friends.
    The way Rei and Usagi poke fun at each other created one of the best female friendships, yet the more focused plot of Crystal kinda makes Rei seem almost like she just decided to hang out with Usagi (though haven't watched all of crystal, so sorry if wrong)

    • @Andyscottmc
      @Andyscottmc 7 років тому +49

      The 90's anime filler was created to kill time while the manga was being written. And there were some good filler arcs(The Doom Tree) and some that scuppered my enjoyment of the Series completely(Mamoru acts like a jerk to protect Usagi, leaves her crying in a phone both, acts like a jackass for 16 episodes, we get some half-assed explanation and then it's never mentioned again. I finished season one. I enjoyed it, but you make some good points. The old anime showed their friendships more and we actually got to know the other sailor scouts. They were barely relevant besides the constant vows to protect Usagi. I also found the generals/scouts romance... unconvincing. The ships don't bother me, I was interested, but it wasn't convincing because the characters never got the chance to be developed.
    Plus the old Usagi was funny (and kind of stupid) but here she's just cute and in love. The love thing is important, but more focus used to be on her and her friends in the beginning.

The only episode they did good was when they got revived. To me it felt like they stuck to the manga, but that was a bad idea. My favorite part of s3 was that a simple attack couldn’t kill the witches. I wish they got reformed though because I liked them better then the Black Moon Clan. Other then that, they didn’t die from easy attacks. That’s why I hated the season. All of them died from an easy attack. Annoyed me so much how annoying Neptune & Uranus were in BOTH. + The ending felt just dramatic. Idk

    When I was in middle school, like I think we're talking 7th grade, I was a MASSIVE fan of Sailor Moon. Sometimes I was late walking to school because the stupid networks put it on at 7:30 and I needed to leave the house no-later than 8... which was usually just as the episode ended. Even though I'm a guy, I immediately fell in love with the show's premise and the concept of magical girls and fighting monsters by moonlight. I remember being so crushed when the show just *vanished* right after Rini discovered that Serena was Sailor Moon. The most I had to go on were a handful of VHS tapes which only covered a number of episodes, including the battle with Queen Beryl.
    When the show came back, years later, on Cartoon Network I was far too busy with college and personal life to watch much of it, but I always wondered how the rest of the show went. I was utterly disappointed when I got my first look at Crystal and it was horribly animated with awkward body proportions and facial expressions. I pretty much gave up on it after two episodes. Now I'm far older, almost 40 in fact, and I'd love to reconnect with the original 90s anime. I certainly didn't know about the live-action show, but I'd heard of the various games and movies thanks to obscure internet fandoms in the early 2000s.
    This video perfectly encapsulates why Crystal is such a terrible introduction to Sailor Moon, and as an entry into the series in general. It's not just the rushed quality, it's the lack of decent character development and diminished relevance of main cast members. Like, okay, I've read that the other uh, "Inner Sailor Scouts" weren't as vital in the anime. Which honestly tells me that the 90s anime got some things better than the actual manga. A protagonist is only as good as their supporting cast and/or villain. Think of how boring Dragon Ball would've been if it introduced Krillin.. and then promptly left him in the background for most of the story? Or if Yamcha and the others vanished more or less completely after their power levels couldn't keep up. We'd have lost loads of good character interaction, in-jokes, and references within the show.
    Anyways, I just wanted to say that I really appreciated this look at Sailor Moon. I should really track down the original show at some point.

    My main problem with the animation is that the characters look completely unexpressive, like lifeless dolls you would find in the SM merchandise. Give the original credit, even though the animation was choppy, the expressions the characters have not only makes them feel oddly more organic, despite the distorsion, but also turns comical scenes even funnier. And for me, the biggest crime in Crystal is the near-lack of humor.

    • @kandiiyuutaamu

      +kandiiyuutaamu maybe I should have said lack of character... I really enjoy the underlying darkness of the Sailor Moon universe, particularly what concerns Wisenan and Nehelenia. And it is the comedy routine that makes the darkness al the more tragic. In Crystal, I find everything so bland, that I'm not even affected by the parts that are supposed to come off as tragic

      @marissaleimone9270 9 років тому

      +baranguirus Unfortunately, that's how it really is in the original story. The inner senshi don't really receive much character development, outside of a few incidents, and I believe this adds to how much they were dedicated to serenity, and they even point this out themselves in the manga. Crystal is merely reflecting that truth.

      SilenceGlaiveMaster CJ Vs. Manga
      Let me get this straight... SMC is much closer to the Manga but because it has flaws in its animation, it shouldn't be watched as an introduction?
      I think one of the biggest reasons why first-time watchers should watch SMC is because it DOESN'T DRAG ON FOR 50 EPISODES! It's true newcomers will miss out on the unique personalities that defined each character in the 90's version, but I would still think that SMC is a better introduction to Sailor Moon compared to the 90's version.

    • @SilenceGlaiveMaster
      @SilenceGlaiveMaster 9 років тому +11

      JR GR nah you didn't get it straight. You're wrong, animation has nothing to do with the show not being valid for an introduction to the franchise. When Crystal came out I was excited every month for new episodes to see where it was going and looked past the animation and I even enjoy the transformations. PGSM has the WORST animated graphics, cheesy acting, corny coreagraphy, and TERRIBLE monsters of the day but the story and ideas are pure gold. I would highly reccomend it as a gateway and it expands ideas from the manga (no surprise because Naoko actually did work on it). I would even use the new musicals as a gateway, it adapts from the source material while delivering an amazing story with A+ acting and characters
      Crystal shouldn't be an introduction because the fast pacing makes it a train wreck. People who only watched another source would get the characters, new comers would just find the guardians useless and lifeless. You can change any of the dialogue around or take them away from the story and nothing would be different. The show even takes away all the character moments from the holy bib- I mean manga. Speaking of that they compeltly change the equality and empowerment Mamoru and Usagi's replationship had in the manga into nothing but Usagi only worshipping him and not caring about her friends unless the plot calls for it.
      Crystal is a bad gateway because of the apathetic character development which causes the story to come across as "eh". Even when it derives from the manga it fails to expand on the ideas there's a huge reason why people abandoned ship by act 12 (like Ami's life; Mako's guy friend; COUGH SHITTENOU, Taking away all the credibility of Venus' leadership, etc.) and makes the soldiers come off as weak. In act 7 of the manga I was afraid for Usagi about to be stabbed by Zoisite and felt bad Tuxedo Mask felt useless anyone could empathize with him. In act 7 of Crystal I was just waiting for Zoisite to finish her off because the changes made only made the fight so slow, anticlimatic, and pathetic.
      I was 13 years old when I watched the first season and loved the fun the episodes had, the plot, and the characters. I've had people in high school watch it and they found the show great, the amount of eps didn't bother them. If 200 episodes didn't stop people from becoming fans for 23 years it won't now. What matters is the story delivery and characters. The 90s anime, PGSM, the manga (and don't give me Crystal is like the manga bs even so better delivery); and the Sera Myus are ALL great introductions for these reasons, which Crystal lacks.
      So you didn't get it straight and just assumed it was just over animation. The bad story telling and adaption is the real reason, the animation is just a turd on top of a huge steaming pile. Maybe you should actually listen to what fans say instead of grasping at straws while ignoring the main point. Good day ;)

      SilenceGlaiveMaster
      Let me address the 5 reasons she makes to see if I didn't get it.
      Reasons #5 and #1 critique the animation. Those in itself are irrelevant when it comes to introducing newcomers to the story of Sailor Moon. Reason #4 - characterization being affected due to adapting a chapter of a manga in 20 minutes. I personally could've used less monologues (especially the romantic ones) but even if you didn't get those, you'd still never get the characterization that old timers want to see, unless you had fillers but that was addressed in my first response to the video. Reason #3, added content - just because you don't like the Shittenou storyline doesn't mean SMC isn't a good introduction to the mythos of Sailor Moon. It's still not as dragged on and not as much of a deviation as the 90's version. And I doubt any of the anime reactors (the newbies) would sit down to watch the musical or PGSM or even read the Manga. The guys that watch it would probably not be into the musical or PGSM, and nowadays people skip the reading and go straight to the film/animation adaptations. Reason #2 is irrelevant. She talks about magic girls anime which isn't even the topic. The topic is whether or not SMC is a good introduction to Sailor Moon.
      As for your argument of fast pacing. I'd rather get an imperfection, than a dragged out storyline. As entertaining as the 90's was, I'd find it difficult to watch every episode in the first arc. Especially, today when everything is more past faced and ADHD is rampant LOL.
      I find it amusing how your argument about character development in the third paragraph (and in most of your arguments) is based on your previous exposure to Sailor Moon. If you really wanted an objective argument, you need only watch first timer's live reactions. There are a few - and they seemed to enjoy it as it is. This fact alone diminishes yours and this video's arguments.
      So I did get it right. So not only is the animation an illogical reason against SMC as a "gateway" to Sailor Moon, the arguments from long-time fans are biased (as i've mentioned many times in many of my rebuttals this past year).
      Objective Observations:
      1. Compared to the 90's version, SMC sticks closer to the Manga.
      2. Blu Rays exist to fix up errors. I read it happens often in anime and other shows.
      3. As she mentioned in the video, musicals are more for old fans.
      4. PGSM - I would assume only a handful of the teenage guys and gals would probably sit through it to watch it. Even many of the Moonie reactors have expressed that it wasn't their favorite adaptation, and many of them haven't watch it through.
      5. Newbies seemed to enjoy SMC even with its flaws. Their opinions will be more objective about SMC than yours or any of the old fans.
      Nice try though. Good day! :)

      The CGI in Moon Pride was very good but it would have stuck out more in the series. They tried to make the CGI in the series to blend with the 2D animation which is why it isn't as great as the music video. So the lackluster cgi in the series seems intentional.

    I believe some of your points are fair (can't argue with animation flaws), however they are still good enough to be watchable. Now, I do agree that there is less characterization in Crystal than classic, I still think classic overdid a lot of that filler and for no reason, other than to create filler. Don't get me wrong, due to nostalgia reasons I can't get rid of classic from my life, and still love it dearly. But after watching Crystal, i was blown away at how different it was in story.
    I then went to read the manga, and holy cow, it's so dark! I loved their personalities versus what the classic manga did, and in some aspect (though I understand they are teens), made them less desirable personality-wise. It just makes no sense to have Rei be a total B&&t, especially since she's a shrine maiden. And Venus being a total ditz/bimbo is not an attractive quality either. Also, Usagi showed very little growth in Classic. It was basically, okay, whine, whine, the other senshi just weaken the monster and bam she finishes them off. Come the end of the arc, she pulls a Goku and get's unknown power from somewhere and saves the world. Second season? Back to the same person, wash, rinse and repeat.
    Come third season, same thing, and so forth. The Manga is so much superior in the sense that while it's much shorter, it does things right even in those shorter arcs. I do agree that they even cut out some development in the manga which I wish they didn't, so we are on the same page on that side. But even with it's animation flaws, it's still so much more beautiful art-wise, someone who is completely new can jump right in, and enjoy it. I also love that they use much less stock footage, that got old QUICK in the old one. What, the Senshi have their manga attacks? Cool. Wait, you mean they can also control the elements, and manipulate them? Wow. Oh wait, they can also create forcefields and float/fly? Um HELL YES.
    And though music is completely subjective, I still believe Crystal Soundtrack is much more superior than classic, for one I was not into that whole 70's wondergirl corny disco music they had going on. I mean it was the 90's for crying out loud, they could have used 90's music, something even DiC got right. But back to my point.
    Also, I would like to mention that just because the arcs are much shorter, that doesn't mean character development has to happen right then and there in the first arcs. As with the manga, the development happens all across the board, over all arcs. It's not lacking, it's just spread out more evenly, rather than cramming 20 episodes of necessary air filler, something they could have just done with 3 to 4 episodes, but when money is involved, well that is what speaks eh?
    After all is said and done, Sailor Moon Crystal is still a much better adaptation, yet still with flaws, and I could do without certain changes from the Manga, as you mentioned. But at it's core, it's still great, and I can't wait till Viz releases the Blurays. Also, it's worth mentioning the senshi get a bit more developments in the Black Moon Arc, as well as Infinity and Dream. Just my 2 cents, well 25 cents, but you get what I mean. Sorry for the Essay! It's a great video, and your points are valid, however I fundamentally disagree with someone starting with Crystal, because the reaction by brand new fans alone is great. We can actually love both, they are different retellings so to speak.
    P.S. Now this was a real Essay, sorry about that! lol

      Joey Angelo Also would like to add, I feel that the a lot of the fandom were looking for flaws just to hate it, only because it followed the manga art style, and if you look for flaws, you're gonna find them. I can find a bunch in classic. My point is that with the exception of a few things, I don't notice much of these flaws unless someone points them out. And this may be the case with many more people who are not familiar with Sailor Moon. If you watch reactions from people who don't know what Sailor Moon is, and watches Crystal for the first time, they all tend to love Crystal. We who already have nostalgia bias, not to mention Classic bias, can't be really telling people they shouldn't start out with this series, just my humble opinion. :)

    • @SuperBlaze22
      @SuperBlaze22 9 років тому +8

      Joey Angelo FIRST OFF! I wanna say is if it wasn't for the "filler" in the original anime, these characters, their chemistry, and their relationship depth and variety would be non-existent! Those "filler" episodes even allowed us to have villains with depth as well. The original anime did things loosely based on the manga INTENTIONALLY because the manga was soooo fundamentally lacking. It was cute for a read but that's it. It was nothing but heroics, grandeur, but no true substance. The only character with any depth was Minako because she has two whole mangas that focused on her and her alone. the cast is too large for a short manga like Sailor Moon to really get into the PERSON(s) and not just the events around them. These characters were so well round and explored in the original anime, we got to see them deal with things in many different ways that we could relate to. So many moods expressions. And that's why we love them. Because they were REAL per say. They were more than a bunch of girls forced to be together fighting a new big bad every season. Sailor Moon Crystal offers NOTHING! Ridiculously bad art/animation, rushed microwaved story, characters with no lives, flaws, or minds of their own. All they do is follow Usagi around and have nothing but nice things to say about her, that is so FAKE! That's not friendship, that's slavery. Slaves to bad writing and directing. Totally reduced to nothing and totally alienating people who had favorities BESIDES Usagi. They aren't respected as individuals anymore They're a bunch of ugly lifeless mannequins. As for the voice acting of Ms.Kotono. She sounds so forced and unnatural in comparison to her initial run with Sailor Moon. Trying to replicate a younger you when you actually had to REALLY perform to build this character in the 90's is no longer important because the deed was already done, and that being the case you'll be given a pseudo version of what was good. And the original anime being loosely based allowed for MUCH MORE innovative and creative freedom that has been ingrained the Sailor Moon lore itself. Also, Sailor Moon Crystal wasn't even made in Japan, It was sold to a TERRIBLE Korean studio(mind you Korea is notoriously known for terrible art/animation), who bought it for cheap and TOEI said HELL YEAH to that, they get to raise Sailor Moon awareness but don't have to spend a dime on it! And as a result of buying it for selling/buying it cheap, and having no budget or TV broadcast company to fund it, you get a very ugly, stiff, lifeless amateur production, distractingly bad series that has not heart or any great ESTABLISHED and KNOWN Japanese producers behind it. this was the worst idea EVER. Clearly the Sailor Moon Crystal merchandize is not selling well and that alone speak volumes. thank god thy don't make much of it. LOL.

      Joey Angelo And ALL of the points were fair. Sailor Moon Crystal is HORRIBLE!!! A damn nightmare!

    • @SuperBlaze22
      @SuperBlaze22 9 років тому +1

      Joey Angelo And nobody is being bias. It's called having common sense and knowing to look at things objectively and separating the love for the franchise and the show itself. This series is so unforgivingly HORRIBLE. it's so intentionally bad that you'd be a dumbass to defend it because the people who made it DON'T CARE! So in light of that, WHY SHOULD YOU?! WAKE UP! Just because something carries the Sailor Moon name doesn't mean it's automatically a win. SMC is the shit stain of the Sailor Moon franchise. It wasn't made for a passion, it was made for CASH. To capitalize on the 20th anniversary and build a Sailor Moon atmosphere merchandize which ironically is 99% classic because THAT'S WHAT WE REALLY WANT. SMC wasn't even made in Japan. So I don't know what else to say.... worst fake anime I've ever seen in my life, and it's sad it had to be such an iconic figure suffering from this. And the classic series had both dark and light elements. The manga and SMC are fundamentally and suggestively lacking in comparison to the developed and well round body of work in the original anime. The manga did SMC better than SMC did its interpretation of the manga, but both pale in comparison to what the classic series has to offer. It wasn't just about heroics and the drama of it, it was about LIFE, good times, bad times, and ugly times. The original series covered it all. It could go from being super funny and playful, to being very serious and edgy. Lets not forget it's one of the most progressive popular series in terms on content and shed light on issues other series of it's kind shy away from, that's what made it superior to all other Sailor Moon iterations and still is and will always be the definitive and universally influential version. The manga was the prototype, the original series is what made it a house hold name.

      SuperBlaze22 Like I said, haters gonna hate. I find it quite hypocritical of you to even say that that there's no bias when CLEARLY there is. But it's fine, you like the old anime, so do I. But that doesn't change the fact that you, among others are being a bunch of hateful drama queens. The show is good enough, and I completely disagree with the personality statements. In the end, it's the ORIGINAL creators intention, and that's the end of it. That's like me saying book to movie adaptations are amazing because the books are never better. Whatever dude, don't like it? Fantastic. But everything you say is completely subjective, just like me or the UA-camr above. The FACT is lots of us loved it, regardless. And nothing is gonna change that. Manga's story arc has always been better in terms of events.

      True, my issue is how blatant and one dimensional Chibi-usa and Rei felt to me. Classic made them less likable but also more distinctly memorable and strong character development. The manga/crystal keeps everyone but the Usagis static and boringly likable. Rei's friendship with Usagi in the manga feels standard and shallow. I liked that in the classic REI had such strong conviction and responsibility due to her grandfather's perverted antics. To be perfectly honest I really enjoyed Grandpa, simply I enjoy seeing older character retain some of their youth. Grandpa felt like he had several sides to his personality. Besides, I prefer the implication that REI just had high standards rather than being vaguely mean

      Well, I wouldn't call Minako a dumb bimbo, but her anime personality and her manga personality are quite similar. Sure, she's not a leader in the anime, but look at Minako's personality in every side story and it's virtually the same. She's narcissistic and misguided (which is why she's my favorite).
      As for Rei, she's definitely different in the anime. But, again, the manga and anime were made alongside each other. There is no "original" version of Sailor Moon. Even if the manga was the original story, I think it's fine that they tried something different even if, like you, I think Rei was better in the manga.

    I think all the sailor moon adaptions are flawed in some way.
    The manga moves a little too fast for its self
    the original anime had some awful filler and some bad animation
    and pgsm had some really godawful effects and the like.
    but those all also had redeeming value.
    The manga had gorgeous art and a straight forward plot
    the original anime also had epic animation in event episodes and some great character development and action
    and pgsm had some of the most amazing story telling I have ever seen ever, let alone in a kids live action adaption of an anime.
    but crystal didn't seem to have any redeeming value for me. it was way too faithful to the source material to offer too much new content, and when they did (re: the generals) it was so bad. they didn't bother setting anything important up there they just tacked it on to say 'see we did shipping'. my hope was we'd at least get some gorgeous animation, but it looks worse than most anime from the early 2000s, let alone from this current era.
    the closest it got to any redeeming value was the way they were able to play with color and such during some beautiful scenes but over all it wasn't enough.

      +Alecks CH. Except by and large, Crystal did do better than the 90's version. The storytelling is tighter and more coherent. There's no massive amounts of filler that doesn't add anything to the plot. And Sailor Moon and the Inner Soldiers retain their original personalities. I would most certainly recommend Crystal over the 90's anime to anyone that wasn't a fan. Crystal doesn't have the animation quality that the 90's version does, and the quality of the musical score could go either way. Personally, I prefer Crystal's, but I can admit that I'm biased because it's Yasuharu Takanashi. But on the whole, it's better, even with its flaws.

      Yes, same I feel like the 90s had given some of better characterization while other times it felt like their personalities get reset every season due to different writers I believe. I practically felt sometimes characters like Mars, Mamoru, and Chibiusa can be annoying when they stir up drama just for the sake of it (though I don't exactly hate them either) Things I liked in the manga is how other characters were able to get more power-ups along with some of the art style (Serenity with white hair)
      Another thing I liked is how they added grey area to some of the antagonists (Neflite, Saphir, Spectre Sisters, and Saphir) while others times I felt others felt oversimplified (Demande, Queen Nehelenia, and Shadow Galaxia).
      While I'm pretty much mixed with most other arcs, Dreams and Stars (the last 2 arcs) actually stuck better with me in the manga.

    I just want to say that my best friend said she couldn't even get through the first episode of 90s Sailor Moon. I like it myself and am on season 4, but I like Crystal a lot better, and got my best friend hooked on it. Part of it is because of Usagi. In the 90s anime, it bothers me that she never seems to defeat an enemy without a pep talk unless it's the last episode. In Crystal I don't get that feeling. She seems ready and willing to fight and protect the earth. I'd trust Crystal Usagi to save my life, but I'd lose confidence in my hero if she spent most of the fight getting her butt kicked until some guy shows up with a rose and says some words. With my best friend, Usagi's her favorite character, and she almost never has the main character as her favorite. The other part of why I like Crystal better is Mamoru. He actually feels like part of the team as opposed to a speach giver.

      And that isn't JUST with anime, it's with cartoons here too! Superman was the prime suspect! All the man had was glasses as Clark Kent and as SuperMan a curly q! *Face palms desk.*

That and the enemies aren't that much better where they make stupid moves like the one stated, comes up with the same stupid plot to do over and over again (this time, with a twist!), or attacking...the same...town...again...and again...and again...Hell, they could have attacked Europe or the Americas (North or South) and just CARRY THE DAMN ENEGRY BACK TO THE QUEEN! (Dies on the inside.)
      Case in point, villains and regular citizens alike, are just too dumb for words and in some cases, so are the heroes. As my aunt or uncle like to say: "IT'S IN THE SCRIPT!"

    You have articulated why I got bored with Sailor Moon Crystal. My eyes were literally closing by themselves while I was watching Sailor Moon Crystal, and I want to pat myself on the back for finishing Season 1. I also HATE that they made EVERYONE SKINNIER. Like we don't have enough body image issues in the world today!! What is up with that?? They're supposed to be in junior high.. why should they look stick thin?? The original anime will always be a big part of my childhood, and after watching this video, I think the best way to go is to go back to the original anime and the manga. THANK YOU, for being of great service to Sailor Moon fans.

      Absolutely seconding the hatred for the new supermodel skinny bodies. One of the best things about the original was that Usagi was not only short but even chubby at the start. She looked real and proportional most of the time.

    I feel the difference is that Sailor Moon Crystal has a larger focus on the overarching story, and the action that the Sailor Senshi get into. The original 90's anime had a larger focus on the characters, their interactions, the world outside their lives as Senshi, and the story each episode had to tell individually. Overall, I think which one you prefer boils down to taste. I love both series' though, maybe Crystal slightly more because there aren't as many episodes, making it more accessible and rewatchable.

      +Mariana Muñoz Támola Eh, we see them interact more in Blackmoon. Honestly, the problem is that classic fans are used to arcs being seasons which are way different. Arcs are stepping stones for the characters to develop while seasons are start and finish for certain development.The mentality is so different that people can't really wrap their heads around it. You view the Dark Kingdom arc as the Dark Kingdom season and thus expect it to have seriously developed them, but that's not how arcs work.Don't get me wrong, there definitely needs to be more time to character exploration and interaction, but we really won't see it the same way as the 90s.

    I like the original Sailor Moon better than Crystal for multiple reasons but my biggest complaint about it was it was like the new barbie. It portrays the sailor scouts as these super skinny girls (like unhealthy skinny). I mean the original made the proportions at least look like a normal human size. I believe that it gives girls an unhealthy perspective on what their body should look like.

    FIRST OFF! LOL.

I drew Sailor Moon nonstop and was just absolutely obsessed with it. So when the reboot was announced, I was SOOOOO excited. Until I watched it. Nowadays, the kind of anime I like is more mature and thought provoking, like Ghost in the Shell or Evengalien (spelled that wrong sorry), and watching this shiny, teeny bop terribly animated horrible excuse for a show made me SO SAD. I've also gotta disagree! If anything I think it's a good place for a new viewer/reader to jump in. Your number 5 reason is a big reason I DO like it XD. I hadn't watched the show or movies in YEARS, so bear in mind my basis for comparison is dusty and covered in cobwebs, but I recently watched the first 2 episodes of the original, and then decided to check out Crystal, and LOVED that Ami was introduced so quickly, as well the rest following suit. So, what you call rushed, I call cutting the fat, and I'm personally glad they did that. Imo that makes it a little less overwhelming for a new viewer to get into, because lets be honest, as fun as it is, the Sailor Moon universe is wacky and all over the place XD.
    Aside from the transformations being CGI, I also really enjoy the animation. I appreciate the nostalgia of the look of old school manga, but I really like seeing the Scouts in all their Pretty Soldier glory looking crisper and more clear, more colorful even.
    I can agree with you though on the lack of character development...or character at all...for the other scouts. They just kind of seem like brainwashed cult followers as the most we see of them is their obsession with zealously following and serving and protecting Usagi.
    Long post, lol, but lastly...Yeah, Beryl's boys. It's a cute idea, them being the Endymion for the other scouts....but it's a little heavy handed. Like you said, this odd hive mine of all the sidekicks pairing off nice and neatly, lol. Not to mention, something even potentially just a little bad happens to Mamo-chan and the world stops turning. All four of their loves are blown to oblivion and, ya know, it's cool. You just take about 5 seconds to let the feels out, then back to drinking the Usagi cool-aid and never even think of them again, let alone mourn them.

      +Firefly2183 "I've also gotta disagree! If anything I think it's a good place for a new viewer/reader to jump in." I don't agree at all.
      If you read the original comic first, you get the story and characters the way they were intended.
      If you watch the original 1990s cartoon first, you get weird, screwed-up versions of the characters and story that many people like and that don't completely ruin the comic book (since they changed so many things) - if you read the comic after watching the 1990s cartoon, you get to enjoy lots of "surprises".
      If you watch Sailor Moon Crystal first, you get a horribly-drawn mess that screws up the characters and plot just enough to be VERY ANNOYING while also leaving things close enough to the comics to ruin all of the surprises.
      If someone absolutely HAS to watch a Sailor Moon TV series rather than just reading the comic, they should really watch the 1990s cartoon, which was very well-made (even though I personally don't like it). Then they should read the comic. :-P

      @kumada84 8 років тому

      +Sailor Sedna "The anime's characters to me were fine...not screwed up...the only things they changed was making Rei more fiery and hot tempered." Really? Pretty much all of the characters are drastically different in the cartoon than they are in the comics... Like, cartoon Rei isn't just "feisty", she's also boy-crazy and wants to be a popstar, whereas in the comics she dislikes men and her only dream is to run Hiwaka shrine. Makoto in the cartoon is a "fighter" (even going to a remote mountain retreat to train with a monk), whereas in the comics she likes cleaning her apartment, growing plants, and cooking for her friends. And I honestly don't think anyone can watch Sailor Stars and think that Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna, and especially Hotaru have anything _whatsoever_ to do with the characters in the comics. The only character in the cartoon whose personality isn't significantly different from the comics is Minako, and that's only because in the cartoon Minako's entire personality seems to consist of reciting proverbs incorrectly... lol

    • @kumada84
      @kumada84 8 років тому

      +Sailor Sedna "What about Ami?" I originally wrote a very long message that mentioned everybody but I started over because it was too long.... LOL Ami is a one-dimensional stereotype in the cartoon (all she does is study, talk about studying, and occasionally accidentally expose her panties to people), which I don't think she is in the comics...
      "And Minako got more goofy as the manga did go on, and she wasn't all like that in the anime. >___> "
      All the girls were goofy -- including Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna LOL
      "Makoto liked cooking for her friends in the anime too; I don't really see that in the manga, partially because in one arc she's captured for half of it!"
      That's a bit of an exaggeration ;-) But the point I was making was, Makoto in the cartoon is more like what the kids in school were gossiping about in the first episode she appeared in (saying she got thrown out of school for fighting), whereas in the comic, she's nothing like what the kids were gossiping about. In the comics, cooking and being "domestic" are Makoto's primary character traits, not secondary the way they are in the cartoon.
      "IMO the Outers in the Infinity manga arc (Uranus and Neptune) were worse but that's just my opinion." What do you mean when you say they were "worse"? Worse than what?

    • @kumada84
      @kumada84 8 років тому

      +Sailor Sedna Sorry -- I still feel that, despite the things you listed, Ami, for the most part, is a one-dimensional incarnation of a stereotype in the cartoon.
      "Makoto is a fighter yes, but she was saving Usagi from bullies in the first anime (call it anime, not a cartoon)"
      I prefer to use the word "cartoon" since that's what the word "anime" means and that's what it is ♥ It's the same reason I call a sandwich "a sandwich" instead of "a sandoicchi" even if the sandwich was made in Japan. There's a word in English that means the same thing, so when speaking in English, I use the English word ;-)
      "and besides some episodes, I saw more of her cooking skills than her being a fighter..."
      It's just my opinion - Makoto's personality in the cartoon is drastically different than in the comic books because the writers focused on different parts of her story.
      "By worse, I mean they attacked the Sailors, we see Uranus kiss Moon...WTF?"
      Sorry, I don't really follow this -- I was explaining how Haruka and Michiru were very different in the cartoon than they were in the comic -- I'm not sure how they can be "worse than that" in the cartoon? Worse than what? I think the issue is that in the comic, Haruka and Michiru were wrong. They made the wrong choices -- choosing to separate themselves from the other girls was the wrong thing to do -- and they realized that by the end. That was the entire point of the story: They (along with Setsuna) allowed their past lives to dictate what they were doing with their present lives when they shouldn't have. In the cartoon, they didn't learn that lesson at all, which takes away the entire point of their storyline.
      "And one more thing, are you even laughing at the idea of me not having those thoughts like I don't agree with you? If that's the case, that's very uncalled for."
      Sorry again -- I'm not sure what you mean? I wasn't "laughing" at you at all -- I think we have some very similar opinions... lol

    You know CJ, I am glad you made this video. It is so true!! Your statement's are all very accurate. I feel as if SMC has lacked luster. And I would hate to see it go any further. I was very excited to see a new SM anime. But when I seen it, I cried in shame. Naoko Takeuchi shouldn't have let them air SMC.. Me and a large group of my friends are very distressed about SMC. It is just terrible... I did like the way the guys where animated. And I also very much enjoy the opening theme. But where is the friendship, the hardships, or CHAD??!!! I was also born in 1991 and much like you I kinda worship Sailor Moon. Not her specifically, but you get the idea. And as a very obsessed fan, I am just destroyed. They would've done better, just remaking all of the old episodes. But I believe that they made SMC because the makers where jealous of the original anime's stardom. So they made this thinking it would be better than the old one.... Well it's not. I could make a better anime than that garbage. Again, great video. Totally true, and I wish SMC was different. But I fear it will be remembered as one of the worst anime's that ever existed.... Loved the video, I just hope the young generation of today doesn't hate Sailor Moon because of SMC.. 😢

      +Sailor Sedna Exactly! I can't believe the lyrics to that song either. I like the way the song sounds in Japanese. But when I heard what they meant, I was not so sure that is how it should be. I feel like it was some kind of agenda, especially since they had Momaru be totally useless in crystal. I can not believe this. And I also agree about it being the worst magical girl series. I'm just glad they are ending it before they butcher the rest of it. I wish real fans could come together and make Naoko see how wrong this is. So she could take proper time, and fix what she has done. I love Sailor Moon. But crystal is a disgrace to the whole franchise. 😧

    It took a long time for me to decide myself at finally watching SM Crystal. Long enough to watch the French dub in fact. Well, I was disapointed as hell. Bad animation, ruxhed story, underdevlopped characters, all right.
    But one thing you have not mentioned. Too often, the girls are NARRATING WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING ON THE SCREEN! Instead of just showing us and letting us go with the moment, you see the character telling in our face the action just in case we are blind. I mean, holy carp that is lame. Yes. Carp.

    I'm one of the odd balls out because I'm enjoying Sailor Moon Crystal! It is a bit rushed, I do agree with that and some of the animation was a little messed up (now fixed in the 3rd season!) But I like that Sailor moon isn't so weak and not so much of a cry baby as she was in the original. I do think there needs to be more episodes but the Manga is also short or I guess we have to live with it. I also think that this anime is geared for people who read the Manga or watched the original, that's why there isn't all that characterization you mentioned in your video, because most of us already know the characters well enough to not have to waste time introducing them and stuff.
    I've watched all 5 seasons of the original in English and Japanese, I love that version too, but it was way to long at times! And some of the voice overs, weren't very good in the English dub. :(

    I agree. I ADORE the 90s anime and the manga to death and i was so excited to see the Manga brought to life. But I was heavily disappointed with the first two seasons. They cut out many character interactions that were important for character development in the manga and heavily censored it. It also took to spot light away from the other senshi, for example when the senshi fought beryl in the manga Venus was the one to end her and its one of my favorite pages since it displays Venus's strength and commitment. But Crystal replaced that scene having moon do it and heavily censoring it in the process. I loved season 3 it was a huge improvement but season 1 and 2 enraged me since it made the Manga look bad compared to the 90s when in reality it was just a bad adaptation. It really comes to show how much the adaptation can effect the reputation of the Manga and even the 90s

    I can understand why some people who have had a taste of Sailor Moon pre-Crystal would think this. However, as someone whose introduction to the series was through Crystal, I would have to disagree. Sure it had its derpy animation at times and mistakes, but I was more or less attracted by the storyline and its upbeat yet mature nature. I did begin reading the manga straight after, and noticed that some character developments were left out, but that doesnt necessarily exclude Crystal as an introduction for the Sailor Moon franchise. I truly enjoyed it despite the derps. I've also watched the 90s and it did have its gems, but I would choose Crystal and Manga anyday when it comes to the story.

      I suppose from that perspective Crystal's a success. If I were a new fan of the franchise, I know I'd prefer Crystal's method of storytelling over 89 episodes filled with repetitive monster of the day battles that don't add anything to the story, and side plots like the Rainbow Crystal and Breakup arcs, which seem redundant in the long run.

    • @Kfowlkes09

      Your comment is the reason why I disagree with the premise of this video. If I were going to recommend either Crystal or the original anime to someone that had never seen the series, I'm not going to waste their time recommending a 200 episode long series that's filled with inconsistent and illogical storytelling, incompetent villains, repetitive fight scenes, and lazy characterizations that don't seem to add anything of substance besides a few running gags. Crystal might be a very bare bones adaption, but it's good enough for a new viewer to grasp what Sailor Moon is all about.

  • @lara2641

    Even though the focus in crystal is fixed on Usagi and Mamoru, they're both so bland to me because we barely get to know anything about them or see their reactions vary. I find Crystal Usagi to be way more irritating and Mamoru to be way less interesting. And their romance to be dull and/or creepy depending on the scene that tends to fall into the standard trap of bypassing character development that would make it convincing. I vastly prefer the 90's approach of writing their relationship as growing fondness/a love story that was just meant to be sweet and sincere but mostly subtle. I love how in the 90's the two fit together without having to be a perfect match which allows for their relationship to be less generic (to me, anyway) and grow. Although the break up was logically stupid, it had some depth in terms of testing the resolve of Usagi & Mamoru's feelings more so than Mamoru comforting Usagi that he'll only love her based on her childish insecurity. Which of course is ten times worse for the supporting cast who barely exist in the setting or native. There's really nothing about any of them that communicates who are they are as people, what their lives are like, what their lives have become or why we should like them beyond some exposition and Ami's sad ambiguous flashback. Rei's the perfect example she spends barely any time being slightly stuck up and no nonsense before falling into the line of happy pleasant people. 90's REI could be bitchy but at least it provided solid character development as she got nicer to people and protective of Usagi in the same vein as her grandfather. Crystal did an okay job doing justice to the manga's art/pacing (but only in the overall faithful kind of way, it definitely seems like the manga put into color/motion/sound) but dropped the ball on the characters and at times the narrative/basic logic.

I'm not a huge anime fan so maybe that's why it's easy for me to ignore things like effects and graphics and such, because it doesn't jump out at me as being lackluster at all. I actually agree. Sure, perhaps some of the character details have been changed or removed (the bitterness between Usagi and Rei comes to mind), but I agree that I think the romance between Usagi and Mamo was actually kind of improved. I feel like, in the original, there was a lot of animosity, then indifference, and then suddenly they're madly in love with each other. In Crystal, I felt like this was handled better. Also, with regards to the argument that it felt rushed, I actually thought it made the series much more crisp and terse. I really did feel like there were a lot of filler episodes in the original, and I felt like Crystal narrowed things down to the point where you were getting the story but you didn't have to go through the myriad of token baddies each knight sent out. I agree that the knights being shipped with the sailor scouts was a little "ehh." I personally really liked the relationship between Zoicite and Kunzite for example, so seeing the Crystal adaptation felt a little off on that front. But overall, I think that both series really has their merits. Both of them are excellent for different reasons.

    I didn't mind the manga inspired designs or the focus on Usagi and Mamoru's romance in the first season that much. When I do read back the Manga, that was the focus to be honest. I felt like we didn't get any real "friend" interaction until the second act in the manga with the scouts. It is such a shame that the animation was so rushed. I really did think that Crystal could be really beautiful and stylized show if it was animated correctly. Season 3 is a whole lot better.

I literally forgot that they were 14 year olds and not 16 year old models. The only redeeming part was that they kept Usagi's original VA and tried to follow the story. I think they just wanted to rush it the first two seasons since most of it was sort of done already did some of them in the 90s. Sorry for the rudeness of my first post. its just that most of my friends, or most of the people I talk to online always treat me as if I have crap taste because of the fact I like Crystal. I mean I understand Crystal has its faults, but it really is a good show. I like it because it doesn't beat around the bush, it focuses a lot more on the dynamic relationship between Tuxedo Mask and Usagi, plus it doesn't do the annoying monster of the week thing that a lot of magical girl shows go through. I understand your complaints, and I see that Crystal does lack in that department, but no show is perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect show, even the 90s anime had just as many mistakes as Crystal did. Again, thanks for talking to me and replying to me in a respectable manner, and giving proper insight as to why you didn't enjoy Crystal aside from the whole, "their art is crap" complaint.

    Honestly, the plot of the manga was really sketchy in the first place. One of my greatest problems with the series as a whole was that the character development sucked. I like the 90's anime because it adds chapters to the story that weren't in the manga, but are still beautiful. Like that love story between Nephrite and Naru? That was how it should have gone in crystal- an improvement on the manga redone to add depth to the story. Otherwise, everything feels very flat and rushed...
    I liked Crystal at first, but I haven't watched since the end of the first arc. It's not bad, but it feels like they're just putting things together and losing track of the story. The manga was good, but again I felt it lacked depth. All the characters felt so rushed and the relationships felt very forced. Granted, the 90's anime added in a lot of crap, too. Filler that should have been avoided... And they left out things too!
    But for the falls and triumphs of both the manga and the anime, crystal should

    I totally agree that it was rushed a hell of a lot. Even though the 90's version had waaaaaay too many filler episodes, I definitely prefer it over Crystal. I miss all of the joking and playing around that was in the original, especially between Mars, Sailor Moon, and Venus. In Crystal, everything is so fast-paced that you can't even get any feelings for the characters so when they die its like, oh okay, that sucks for you, or why the fuck are you dying for someone you just met in the last episode?!?!? It really sucks but I do like it at the same time because it doesn't take 25 episodes for something major to happen like in the original but still, too rushed. If I wasn't so emotionally attached to the original Sailor Moon, I wouldn't have been able to watch Crystal but since I did, I'm already emotionally involved with the Crystal characters so that allows me to enjoy (some) of it. Plus I love how everyone actually dies, as sadistic as that sounds lol

      ***** Exactly, there was little to no character development in Crystal. The only reason why I like it and can have a connection with it is because I watched the original. If I had watched Crystal without watching the original, I wouldn't have cared about anybody dying or who liked who. It's because of my connection with the original that I can actually feel for the characters of Crystal and cry like crazy when someone dies because I know their entire story, not just what Crystal has shown lol

    • @daisymae3981
      @daisymae3981 8 років тому +2

      ***** I like that Crystal goes through all of the main plots quickly but it's a little too fast. I think you're like me since you already have that connection with the original Sailor Moon, the fact that Crystal flies through everything doesn't really faze you but for someone getting into Sailor Moon for the first time, I definitely wouldn't recommend Crystal because of it's lack of character development.
      Sometimes the playing around was too much in the original, I'd just sit there irritated at times and say "Come on! Get back to what you're supposed to be doing!" But the playing around did create a bond between the girls and made them connect with real kids watching the show because almost everybody has that friend that they always mess with but love at the same time. I agree with Sedna that Crystal makes them seem perfect. Seriously though, who would die for someone they just met a few days ago??? What are the chances that 5 girls would meet and become instant best friends and never fight with each other and die for each other a couple of days after meeting? That's what is ridiculous about Crystal, but I still enjoy it most of the time.

      ***** I haven't seen season 3 of Crystal yet. I had to stop myself at the beginning of 2 or else I'd die waiting for the next season to come out lol I can't watch any show anymore unless it's done, I'm too impatient and then after months of not watching it, I forget everything that happened and lose some of my connection with it :/

      ***** Exactly!!!! If I had only watched Crystal, I'd be like, why is she so in love with him for no reason??? She doesn't even know him?!? She only met him like 2 times and they've barely spoken to each other!!! Now they're dying for each other?!?!? WTF!?! Now she's best friends with one girl and the next day with another girl, and another and another??? They trust each other so much and die for each other just days after meeting?!? What?!? lol I definitely wouldn't have watched it either, it would have irritated my soul.

    • @daisymae3981
      @daisymae3981 8 років тому

      ***** Since Crystal goes through everything sooooo fast, I might as well watch it all, plus there aren't that many episodes anyways, I don't mind if I have to suffer. One thing I like about Crystal though is that it's more mature... you know what I mean? I hardly know what I mean but it's there lol The original DID annoy me with how immature they made Usagi/Serena throughout the entire series and then out of nowhere she'd be all wise and mature only to go back to being an immature dork. Crystal irritated me though when Usagi first fought and she literally stood there like a baby and cried... not very super hero like to me. That's just kind of her character though, immature kid fights evil. I wish she would have been a little bit more serious in the original though but that might be because I've always been "mature for my age" even back when I started watching Sailor Moon. What do you think?? Also, did you watch the original Japanese version with Usagi & Mamoru, or the original English version with Serena & Darien?? Because depending on which one, you could know a bunch of stuff that I don't lol

    I guess I'm a minority here, but I like both series. Of course, the original show got me into the franchise when I was young, and led me to the manga, musicals, etc. However, it had flaws too. The animation wasn't always perfect, especially in the early seasons, and there was just so much filler. I like that they were able to flesh out relationships and characters, but there were also all of the ridiculous monsters that they cooked up specifically for the show (like the priest that turns into Boxy the boxing demon? Hahaha-ugh). I still love it though!
    Yes, I agree that, certainly in the first season or two, Crystal's animation was messy. The CG stuff, particularly in the transformations, made me cringe. I also found that the facial expressions were seriously lacking in emotion. However, I do like the fact that Crystal follows the manga pretty faithfully. I was actually skimming through it as I was watching Crystal the first time. It's very close. It was nice to see the manga's more concise story in an animated format, wonky or not.
    I also feel that Crystal has improved in season 3. I thought the animation was better, they created new opening and closing credits, and they also switched to hand-animated transformations, ditching the horrible CG versions. I enjoyed it.
    So yeah, I like them both! I will continue to watch Crystal, and I will always re-watch the original (I am at this moment, in fact). I think they each have something to offer. Sailor Moon!! :D

    The lack of interactions between the Scouts is the WORST possible thing they did. In the original anime, everyone got a chance to shine and their friendship makes sense. It grows on every episode. Things just move so fast in Crystal. I gave up after the fight with Metallia.

    Sailor Moon Crystal definitely isn't perfect (thank goodness they improved on the animation in the newer season), but it was a great introduction to the series for my daughter. She was in this mindset where she only wanted to watch shows with that newer crisp and clean bright coloring, but she was open to the older series after she watched Crystal. There I am, sitting in my room, laughing my ass off at the thing. Laughing like there is no tomorrow! It just doesn't stop. They indulge in EVERY SINGLE TROPE imaginable - and how they always take themselves so seriously makes it so damn funny for me. I just imagine voice actors like Little Kuriboh making a dub for it, BBT style. And when you think it is getting dark and serious, they hit you with the "mowiffic bwack cwistal"! You would have needed a shovel to pick me up off the floor after that!

I haven't watched enough of the reboot to judge it fairly, but it's not much worse than the original was(not saying the original was bad, just didn't know how else to word that). Just like going back to watch the original makes you notice how campy and corny it could be.

  • @Aracknia

    I actually heard about Crystal before its release and as I understood it, while condensed, the goal was to be closer to the visual design of the manga and the story. The animation has its weird moments, yes, but there also several saving graces, namely the lack of re-used footage apart from the transformation sequences. I did grow up on the original, but I am also very fond of Crystal's visual style in comparison, as well as being very fond of the 3D transformation sequences. It's not a cheap thing to do actually, but admittedly is less time-consuming and is more like directing a live-action scene. I say this as someone who has a degree in 3D animation, so I am aware of what I'm talking about. As for the comment about Queen Serenity being incorrectly colored, I think that was deliberate as during the first five episodes she is not mentioned, so showing her would be a major spoiler for those new to the series. I'm not trying to say your critiques are out of place, but I wanted to defend what points I know had more of a purpose than it seems to have on the surface.

  • @ryodark
    @ryodark 8 років тому +5

    Honestly I agree with you here. My biggest complaint was one of your mentions: the lack of characterization of the other senshi. I loved the original anime's interactions between them because it invested me in the characters. They got depth and complexity and you cared when they got hurt. In Crystal, the inner senshi spent most of their time useless and collapsed in a heap on the ground and I had no reason to even really care! :(

    I actually prefer the story of Sailor Moon Crystal versus the original 90s anime series. I wouldn't say it's a reboot--rather, this series is more of an adaptation of the manga. You can actually see how Usagi Tsukino grew in the Crystal version rather than the 90s anime which was plagued by needless fillers.

  • @LostChildOfTime

    Well, good news is by season 3, it gets considerably better.
    But I agree. Season 1 of Crystal... was garbage. It was garbage. It had some redeeming qualities with its musical score, but the overall presentation was plastic.
    Season 2 of Crystal was a bit better. If I had to watch Crystal all over again, I would actually start here, because you're better off experiencing the first season from another source, even if it's the DiC original dub.
    Season 3 of Crystal is actually better than the first two combined within the first episode alone. That's literally how bad the 2014 Sailor Moon Crystal experience was. Season 3 begins to take Sailor Moon seriously where it counts and it begins to stop taking itself so seriously when it doesn't count - or in other words, the overall quality is up and it started having a sense of humor.
    I feel like Season 4 of Crystal could be a massive opportunity to give us a better experience of the 4th arc/SuperS than the original anime did. IMO it was the weakest of the original anime.

    • @LostChildOfTime
      @LostChildOfTime 7 років тому +2

      The first two seasons take themselves way too seriously. People had their complaints about the animation, but I want to be entertained and SMC 2014 was just... not fun to watch. It builds no tension. It feels like an acquired taste of instant gratifications. Perhaps it was better executed in the manga, but as an animation it felt so... unanimated.

    I agree with you so much on the animation. Since I watched Precure 5 and have seen the more recent transformations for the Precure series, I had high expectations of Toei pulling some incredible magical transformations... only to get gimped with lack luster CGI and even Venus's transformation felt lazy vs her original transformation in the 90s anime. Though Mars and Jupiter looked different in the way of transformations at least. Also it's funny how Mercury and Jupiter are the only two scouts other than Sailor Moon that have smooth "strike-a-pose-im-done" frames vs Venus and Mars as they both looked really forced and choppy.

      Yeah, that's one of the strange things about Crystal. Precure proves that Toei has had the ability to pull off stunning animation and transformation sequences that are just as if not more complex than what's in Crystal, but they opted to go with a stiff looking CG. It lacks a certain snappiness in its timing.
      And even stranger thing is that the CG is so lackluster. With every generation of precure, they strive to make the 3D endings better, but the CG in crystal lacks the fluidity and liveliness their other series displays./
      The direction and animation aren't even bad, it's like...the rendering or something.

    i can't stand the new sailor moon. i hate the art style and its just ugh. I grew up with the 90's sailor moon and im being biased i guess but i'd rather watch that one than crystal.

      i grew up with the 90 sailor moon, and i love the new sailor moon. i adapted perfectly to it, and gave it a lovely chance.

      im didnt grew with sailor moon, i like the art style of smc. but they are handled so badly, that they look horrible most of the times.
      thank god for season 3 though

      Season's 3 looks a bit more like an updated version of the 90's art style. You could probably skip to that and be safe.

    wow, this video is 8 years old. Anyway, one thing I really enjoy about SailorMoon Crystal is that Minako/Sailor Venus got a lot more screentime and respect she deserved. In the 90s anime, they reduced her to comic relief.

    Well, i've knew Sailor Moon but it was the Crystal that made me loved it again, cause I was too little to remeber the 90's one. I really dont mind and even if I see a lots of mistakes in new anime, I still was charmed at frist time I saw it. And lucky for us season 3 had better animation (at least for me) ;)

    Actually, it being rushed, I didn't feel at all. I feel like anyone who hates on this is just too stubborn of a fan of the first anime.
    The first anime was barely like the manga and was EXTREMELY slow. Like, really slow. I love it, but it's not nearly as amazing as SMC. Also, using manga pictures as comparisons for the animation?! Really?! Of course the manga would be 100 times better. The new style looks far better than the old anime and is also more accurate based off the style from the anime. Everything about SMC is more accurate.

      Based off the style from the manga* not anime

      +thepandoricacloses yeah. It's pretty sad. I love the first anime. Of course. It was my first anime, but yeah. It wasn't perfect. Lol

      +Audrey Merritt YOu are awesome your like the only person that get that's the old sailor moon was taking from japan and changed into a American version. its doesn't really follow the manga and the art is so werid ( though I still love, child hood and stuff) But I find this better cause it so close to the manga art and plot

    I've watched the original 90's Sailor Moon plenty of times as a kid so i feel like if i even started watching SMC I'd be cheating on the original lol along with the fact that I'm also not a fan of SMC's animation either

    I actually really shipped Molly and Nephrite. It was such a cute couple, even if it did only last for one episode! ;u; btw I forgot...whatever did happen to Molly? Did she move away or something?

      I also loved Molly (Naru in Japanese) and Nephrite. Unfortunately, Molly hooked up with Melvin (Umino) in Sailor Moon R. She is regulated to a background character as the show goes on, spending less time with Serena outside of school.

      +Timothy Yang Cool! I can't wait to get the whole series. I only have books 1, 6, 7, 8 and 10. I read 1 but even though I bought the others I figured I should wait till I get the rest to read them in order. No spoilers in this house! :'o
