- On 1 July, the EBU outlined steps they were taking to improve the Eurovision Song Contest after the controversies of 2024, to help it better face future issues. In this video, we look at what the EBU plan to do, and what we the fans can do to help.

Imo, I think Israel and KAN should sit this next Eurovision out just so the tensions can be lightened. I don’t think another artist deserves to get hated on. Hopefully the contest can return back to how it was. ✌🏼

thats probably the best idea, but lets face it they won't. They kind of want the attention i think, ""all press is good press""
with their mentality that "not participating is letting the haters win" they will not care about easing tensions or creating a safer space for other artists
Rightly or wrongly, there is a perception that certain countries receive preferential treatment over others, for example, with running order. Returning to random order, or a better system, may alleviate this. Perhaps restrictions on staging and "props" will ensure a more level playing field. It is a song contest after all.
You know, at this rate we shouldn't expect anything more or less. It is pretty naïve to think that Israel will be excluded when the EBU didn't want to exclude Russia initially and they only did it after a dozen of broadcasters basically said "If they (Russia) are allowed to compete, we won't go". This included countries like Sweden and the Netherlands - who had up until that point won as recently as 2015 and 2019 respectively and had 11 wins combined (Sweden will get their record tying 7th win the following year). Belarus' suspension originally would've ended in 2024, meaning that once it had ended, they'd have been welcomed with open arms. Only Iceland was threatening to boycott if Israel was allowed to compete and Iceland went on to compete anyway. And keep in mind that no broadcaster had an issue when Israel hosted in 2019, nor with Azerbaijan in 2012 or with Russia in 2009. So we should not expect the EBU banning Israel anytime soon.
Regarding Mr. Martin Österdahl - I don't think the issues stem from just this year. There were so many controversies that were happening under his watch - the Belarus song scandal, allegations of Måneskin snorting the white stuff in the green room, Russia's exclusion, 6 national juries colluding in 2022 and accusations of having the jury vote rigged in favour of Sweden so they can host on the 50th anniversery of ABBA's win. I don't know in the entire history of the ESC the Executive Supervisor having that many controversies in the first 5 years of his run (he took charge in 2020 when the contest got canceled due to the pandemic). And the general consensus is that maybe he's unable to do his job properly.
Your raise some good points in your first paragraph, but the second is laying a lot at MÖ's door that is not his fault. He didn't pick the Belarusian song, the allegations against Måneskin were false, the juries are the responsibility of the broadcasters and the EBU took firm action against the rigging, and juries rigging 2023 so Sweden can win is just a conspiracy theory.
I think Iceland (who also allegedly threatened to boycott Azerbaijan 2012 but nothing came of it) were just keeping their options open due to the sensitivity regarding a particular act, and keeping abreast of what was happening with Finland and Norway. Nations do need to keep their options open but also need to be careful. Finland, Iceland and Norway have every right to be concerned and care, but unlike with Finland in the spectrum of Russia, Israel-Gaza isn’t their war and they can’t solve it alone.
It's also wrong to compare Israel to Russia. Israel retaliated while Russia attacked. In the current Gaza war both sides commit war crimes while in the Russia Ukraine the level of war crimes (not war) is different
I'm not justifying anyone. Moreover, as a leftist Israeli (who wants the war to end, who is upset about it and specifically the humanitarian aid, who supports the 2 state solution) I have talked to people abroad and found that there is a lack of knowledge about the basics of this.
Even at the base of people hating on a song written by an activist against the current Israeli government. They see us all as one unified body, while we have the most extremist government ever (think the US Democrats' worst reasonable nightmare for the US under Trump. Multiply that by a lot. That is my past year and 8 months) while people abroad haven't even heard vital details like "the Israeli judiciary reform" or "Ben Gvir".
The Eurovision isn't even supposed to be political.
But it's the extremist nationalist right, who are convinced they are the "woke left", spewing literally slogans for genocide of Israel, not knowing anything about current affairs really (again, the keywords mentioned) but marvelling in the joy of being allowed to hate in their stupid little protests not realising that their protests are making the current regime in Israel stronger, and that they're pushing Israel into a populist right / fascist dictatorship. The regime is, the watermelon hateboys help them.
So after all this
And keep in mind that I did say I oppose the war (and have been protesting twice as long as hateboys have)
Politics should not be part of Eurovision.
People spamming chat and shouting slogans and booing at Eurovision should be banned
And this "I don't like what the prime minister of that country is doing BAN THEM BAN THEM ALL" attitude is a slippery slope.
The Eurovision is meant to bring us together. If I'm cheering for a song and an anti-Israel activist abusing the war for their agenda of "freeing" the area river-to-sea is sneering at me for existing, the Eurovision loses that.
But they think their opinion is the only opinion
That what they know is what exists
And therefore what they think is wrong is sacriligious.
And that is violent and dangerous.
@@ailaG Eurovision is currently a super-political populist racist bullying contest which has nothing to do with the song!
Those hater fan populists are no different from Donald Trump or the far-right Islamophobes in the West.
They also tend to hate the UK every year and gave them zero points in the public vote again because of Brexit, even if they had a great song with great performances in years!
I'm going to boycott Eurovision next year, after all the hate this year. I already knew Eurovision was full of politics, hate and bullying since I was a teen, it ruined my youth!

Soviet countries weren't banned, their broadcasters weren't part of the EBU.
@@ESCHayden Australia also isn't part of ebu and is invited because they really wanted. Poland wanted to take a part too but was said no. Just saying that talking about how israeli people might disagree with their goverment and therefore their country should be represented is hypocrisy. Belarussians might disagree with their goverment too but their country got banned like forever so
@@Komancz609 SBS (Australia) is an associate member, as are broadcasters in a number of other countries. Soviet countries were part of a separate union which merged with the EBU after the dissolution of the SU. BHRT, the Belarusian broadcaster, was suspended from the EBU for violating freedom of press, speech etc rules. Russian broadcasters withdrew from EBU for similar reasons. KAN doesn't have the same issues so it's tricker. This is not me saying Israel should be in ESC, just that removing them is not so easy. Could be a legal quagmire.
Well it is infuriating when your "opinion" is actively being suppressed when the people you disagree with are allowed to voice theirs, as was the case with this years eurovision, making it very difficult to impossible to show any kind of curtesy to those you disagree with. And what was being voiced and/or not allowed to is much more than just an opinion.
as long as they're willing to let countries at war in, they will never defeat the "esc is not political" allegations. having almost half of the top 10 songs already guaranteed to be italy, sweden, ukraine and, since rotw, israel, makes this contest increasingly boring and more recent sympathy televotes defeat the purpose of the contest.
The levels of hate Eden Golan experienced stems directly from a small minority of toxic artists and chosen city with large numbers of Muslim immigrants. The general public saw the situation the opposite way and showed much love to Eden as public vote shows. The noise of the minority should never dictate the future of ESC.
