The reason for the overlap between Star wars and Dune be them intentional or not is that George Lucas took some inspiration from that of the Dune novel. An evil space Emperor, a chosen one on a desert planet, SPICE! But it's clear to see where he diverged.
I didn't read Dune, but I would bet Emperor Palpatine is much more evil and dangerous than Emperor Shaddam IV . I don't really see that Shaddam and Palpatine would be similar characters.
If there is a psychopath in Star Wars, that is Palpatine. He is worse than Darth Vader. He is sadist, sociopathic and a big manipulator. I only see some kind of similarity with the Baron Harkonnen, his cunning and plotting nature makes him similar politician to Palpatine, but Palpatine was even more megalomaniac.

Both Palpatine and the Baron are intelligent, but manipulating and cruel people. They are experts of politics and diplomacy. Both of them sacrifice anyone for their purposes. The difference Palpatine is even more selfish. He didn't care about even his own apprentices who could be his heirs. He continuosly replaced them (yes, he planned to do this even with Vader) because he didn't really want to share and pass his power. The Baron Harkonnen cared about his House in a certain degree. Though he considered Rabban as expendable tool, he has his other nephew as his heir. He wouldn't have sacrifice /replace Feyd and planned to save the power for himself somehow. However the Baron didn't have unnatural powers and didn't seek after possible immortality. Palpatine 's final goal was this, so hence he didn't follow the Sith inheritance.

He also was a sadistic child predator wish I think makes him a little worse than Palpatine.

except for the parts where he gets names wrong, like calling caladan "cadalan", and naming the houses and their members as just the name of the house
I love how diverse and cultural the design is in this movie. A universe of things to explore for the artist or designer or anyone curious. Even anthropologists and biologists with all the insectine influence on the tech.
The likening of the Harkonenn soldiers to Riot Police blew my mind. I never once thought of them like that but it makes so much sense!!

This is a wonderful analysis. The reason it "lands a bit close to Star Wars" for you is because Star Wars rips off Dune, not the other way around. Frank Herbert and a circle of sci-fi writers he was friends with Including Heinlein, Ellison and Butler used to joke that they were the "We're too mature to sue George Lucas Club". 🙂 Your analysis of the look and styling of Dune is spot on. One small correction @23:05 : the dune story occurs in 10191 AG, or After Guild. Converting to our time its something like 23,352 A.D.

I think that the breeze blocks were inspired by the mashrabiya that was widely used in hot climates in the middle east.

The aesthetics of this movie are why I love the Dune franchise so much. It’s a far-future science fiction with analog technology, futuristic clothes with heavy inspiration from the real-world, and background sets that are futuristically but deeply inspired by early modern-architecture. Denis Villeneuve and his team managed to seamlessly blend real-world aesthetics seamlessly within a futuristic setting.

This was insanely great! Very illuminating presentation of all the different styles and influences of aesthethics. Thanks to you I now know real-world examples like brutalism, which I find very aesthetic and beautiful. Also the nods to traditional islam culture and mysticism in Dune is made even clearer by this video. Well done. :)
Don't know if anyone noticed the weapons used by each faction and the influences from each, particularly the professional, and modern yet very japanese insoired blades the Atreides used. Reflecting their skill and discipline
Harkonen use large cleaver like weapons, identifying them more with raiders and such
The Sardukar use large serated swords,providing them at least to me with a kind of professional, yet brutally precise feel
The fremen, use the tooth of thr sandworms, showing that they rely on the desert, so much so a piece of it is their weapon
Yes, maybe someone has already made an analysis of armor, weapons and fighting styles of Dune.

My biggest worry regarding movies like this one and Blade Runner 2048 is that every futuristic movie ends up looking the same with that brutalist aesthetic.
Dune (the novel) actually came out quite some time before Star Wars and heavily inspired the latter. So, adapting the book, Dune (the movie) would naturally have some similarities to Star Wars.
Dune hits that weird spot where you think you know where the references are from, but they dont, xd
House Atredis looks iranian in looks (Leto's beard and hair) and style (those military-ceremonial sober clothes with high necks) and the fact that bullfighting came from that area (its mentioned that Leto's father liked to bullfight).
While you may say that Harkkonen tend to lean more on Russians, historically fighing for control of the middle east/turkestan region with the different iranian states from the XVIII century onwards.
While it is true that the Fremen are inspired on the Berber and Tuareg peoples, its hard to avoid thinking about the game Highfleet, centered around desert themes

The Harkonen in every other previous adaption were like the colonial British empire. The Baron (floating fatman) was definitely based on Churchill.
As a [former] star wars fan ... Dunes style and execution could have been that of prequels we never got. Star Wars failed to grow up.

There are absolutely overlaps between Dune and Star Wars. George Lucas said he was influenced by the books by Frank Herbert. I thought it was interesting that the high liner ships looked a bit like the worms

To me the breeze blocks are tightly knit with middle eastern culture, especially the intricate geometric patterns, and migh I add the Persian looking rugs. This would hint at an underlying cultural overlap between the locals and the new stewards.

Excellent videos. Regarding pattern-screens / breeze windows, they were also popular in the Middle-East. Since there were modesty-restrictions in society, women's quarters often had screen doors and walls with repeated patterns, so that they can see the outside world through the gaps, but without being seen by outsider men. Also, Islamic Art had restrictions on drawing human and animal figures (due to idolatry accusations) - and thus, relied on complex geometric patterns instead, which were repeated throughout.
The reason why it smoothly blends into modern brutalism is because they have primarily used the Art Deco style. Art Deco itself had strong inspirations from non-western cultures, like Islamic cultures, ancient Egypt and meso-American pyramids. Hence, the Islamic style blends into Art Deco, which in turn blends into concrete brutalism.

Perfect explanation
while I appreciate your analysis (I fully admit I am not at all schooled in aesthetics) There is one factor which does explain much in the simplicity of the Dune Universe. That would be the Butlerian Jihad and the absolute prohibition against machine thinking. (computers) Aso much of the nature of Dune is due to the respect which Villineuve holds for Herbert and his original creation. I can only hope that he took a page out of Peter Jacksons book and filmed portions of the sequel(s) at the same time as he was creating the first Dune movie to avoid having characters natural ageing messing with the continuity of the project.

I really enjoyed this explains a whole lot a lot of the stuff I came to that conclusion myself but I like to see someone else do it so I can understand someone who speaks my language of beauty having said that is there any chance that you will be doing one on the Ridley Scott Prometheus like there is a very beautiful technical aesthetic that I really liked and I haven't seen anyone do a video on that quite yet
