- Mel Street was not a 'cosmopolitan' country music singer. He wasn't 'urban' country. What was he?
Well, when I started in radio back in the 1970's I considered Mel Street (and Gary Stewart) a great honky-tonk country music artist in the tradition of 1950's country music
But whatever happened to Mel Street?

He was a one of a kind artist.
Love Smoky Mountain Memories
Thank you Mr Street
My dad loved that style of country music so I grew up hearing it and come to live it. I’m 54 years old now and those songs remind me of better times growing up and Smokey Mountain Memories is one of those songs. I get choked up when I hear it today.
My friend and I used to go talk to Mel. He played at our local TV station. He lived on Hwy52 heading up the hill from Bluefield to Bluewell WVa. Seemed like a pretty cool guy.
you were so lucky, George Jones said Mel was the best country singer he ever heard
George Jones sang at Mel's funeral--Mel did many fine songs, he should still be on radio
Mel did leave some great music!
A great loss for country music and for his own family!
Mel was the real deal. He epitomizes "country" in the art of his singing. His death really is an unknown tragedy for the history of music.
George Jones said Mel Street was one of the best country singers he ever heard
he is the best
George could be a bit of a comedian.
Highnrising, doubt it. George was one of his good friends.
That's the ultimate compliment
Unbelievably I found one of his live performances that he recorded on a cassette tape believed to be one of his last recordings he did while playing at a bar in El Paso! These songs are like no other! I hope to someday share these fine rare songs with the world on youtube!
Let us know!
Yes please share that recording . thank you.
Mel was my husband Second cousin. My mother in law, and Mel were first cousins.
I am forever grateful that I stayed after the concert while you signed autographs. You seemed to need a friend by your side that evening. And then you were gone from us physically but always in our hearts. Continue to rest in peace my friend.
You know it. He is the very best of the best. He would of been hard to beat if he had lived. I don't think anyone could of out perform him.
Whichever way his life ended was very sad then and is still sad today. He was one of the B E S T country singer
I miss those times .....
My father Al Harvey (NOT Alex Harvey)was his front man/road manager/bus driver back when Mel was at his absolute hottest. Just before, as he puts it: "Mel was so honest in his character he thought he had to start living the songs He sang." He watched the decline Mel suffered first hand. He worked for him as long as he could and finally had to come off the road where he took on the role of band leader at The Longhorn Ballroom from '76-'78. He always looked up to his friend Mel Street and misses him to this day.
the best in country music
I loved Mel Street's songs during High School and later.
KXRB---Thank You for this. 1st heard Smokey Mountain on a album my dad had. Your right...Music today DOES NOT HAVE THE FEEL or SOUL That this ERA music has. Sad to is the fact that todays SO-CALLED Country NON SENCE don't even Acknowledge Mel.. Again--THANK YOU FOR THIS
Mel street was my father's first cousin he grew up in my grandmother's house he headlined for Elvis and even wrote songs that he gave to Elvis himself he took his own life after finding his wife with another man
I d like to know more about mel s life and what happened to his family
So was ha a cheater because of being away from home and his wife was too. Were they getting s divorce too snd what happened to his children? I loved his voice the very first time i heard it as a teenager and at 70 now still listen to it
And wish i could fine more of his last couple albums from 77 and 78.
@@maryellendavis5774 Maybe?
Looks like (haven't yet confirmed) that his mgr. owned all rights. Researching that. Also trying to find two songs removed from final album. (All help appreciated.)
Two of Mel's children have passed away.
Someone posted a clip of the Bluefield tv showw from 1968. Doesn't mention Mel in the title. You will see a very young Ronnie Cochran, etc.

Dear @alicastreet-ma i too have loved mel s voice and music since around 1972 i think. And i still play all the old songs by him i can get from google and amozon. Always heard he was a gentle and very much a loving family man. Depression is a terrible thing. I ve worked with many clients who had different variation s of that. I m interested in any recordings\videos and hopefully good news about your family after that tragic day. I could never find info on the family or his early years. He s still one of my favorite music much to my kids and grandkids s complaints. Cause they preferre more of today s music which i don t call COUNTRY music. How old where the children at that time and i pray none of your family blamed themselves, cause i heard it many times that they feel hopeless in a deep dark hole they can t get out of and so sad they can t think of anything but ending that and think of others at that time. There is more know about that now and alot of medication and help today too.
It was 42 and he took his life at 42 like his father and grandfather before him. Tragic
Kinda a tradition.
Sources for this info?
It makes you wonder if he was able to take time of from touring he might still be with us
For those commenting he was murdered, would you please give more info or hints as to who , when, where, and how? The possibility of not suicide certainly crossed my mind over the years. But reports were that he was home with family. I believe he was scheduled to play possum holler the night before but cancelled.
I know for a fact he cancelled shows at least two weeks prior. I had Performance Magazine which showed tour dates, etc. Wish I could find another copy.
He was certainly not murdered. I am his granddaughter. It was suicide, and he was at his home when it happened. My dad was halfway down the stairs when he heard the gunshot. :(
Hey I’ve been trying to find out the same thing I heard he was in love secretly with his brothers wife which seems accurate since he typically sang about cheating in most of his songs. Apparently a concert scheduled and an album about to release he had a new house too what’s weird is I heard his brother and his wife were there when it happened so to me it what I think happened is that his own brother killed him unfortunately but this is just my opinion on what I think happened but very well could be suicide and depression also
Whatever the reason may be still So sad . Mel Street was amazing if anybody has any info please there’s not much information about him
@@aliciastreet-martin9501 Thank you for halting the rumors.
rumours
Country isn't country anymore. It's largely Nash Vegas/MTV crap.
Jason Johnson Your right, most junk music today radio stations. Wish bring back classic hits Honktonk county music again. Some radio stations should play classic hits songs. Fans truly love this kind music.
RIP
Great singer
I heard Mel didn't make a lot of money as a singer, and he worked other jobs to support his family --it cost him money to be a musician, very sad--he would be huge today
Just prior to death, signed first million dollar contract in country music.
@@graylyns the irony of it, he paid his dues, then depression took him away
@@michaelsix9684 It was a most sad situation that affects many to this day.
I read recently that he had signed everything over to his manager, Jim Prater. If I find info again, will post.
@@michaelsix9684 One day I will tell what I have found and what I knew at the time of the demise.
Mel Street was a good person.
I believe Mel Street worked as a mechanic in Bluefield West Virginia
Sad story, as suicide always is.
Mel was an outstanding performer. I appreciate that he WASN'T incorporated into the so called "cosmopolitan" country. What the @#$% is that anyway? This stuff on the radio and CMT today is not country. It's country-rock. That's good for those that like it I guess. For those of us that LOVE good plain ol' country music...gimme Mel Street, King George, Hank, Lefty, Ray Price et al and then it's a party. If Mel was so lonely, why didn't he quit the $#% job and work in a factory or at a grocery store? Missed his family? Ya think that they might have missed him after he killed himself? Selfish. Miss his music but my heart doesn't break when one kills themselves. Better that them killing someone else.
I've dealt with 3 suicides, 2 were musicians, we never know really why someone does it, lots of times I think people do it because they lose hope, and they snap
Mel for my town Grundy va
Yes. Later lived in Bluefield WVa

I don't think he killed himself
I don't believe he killed himself.
Right. He was killed by the same guy who killed Jeffrey Epstein.
@@highnrising 😂👍😂👍😂👍😂👍😂👍😂👍 LMMFAO now that right there issss funny.!!!!!
What makes you think so? Curious I’ve been looking for any information I can get on Mel street
Garry Stewart songs
He committed suicide is the story.
Y would he kill himself. Go seek help.
KXRB ... AM?!?! Huh...
Mel was actually murdered! His widow told it that way. She was told he took his life but later on found out it wasn't true.
This lamo don't know what he's talking about.
Oh i got the real story on what happened with him. He was murdered... By his wife!
Wrong.
I never believed he killed himself.
Absolutely not. I am his granddaughter. My dad was there. He was the last person to see him alive, and Mel was alone in his bedroom when it happened. Definitely and unfortunately suicide, guys.
I know it's not nice to say but he is a coward an took his own life. It hurts to hear of people doing that. My first cousin killed his Delavan my ex wife's brother did the same. I wish I could of been around to be able to talk to them. It hurts
Everyone I knew who died at my last Company died of suicide. Think about that. Strange
If you knew it wasn't nice then why did you say it?
How ironic that Gary Stewart did the same thing 25 years later for much the same reason.
Whichever way his life ended was very sad then and is still sad today. He was one of the B E S T country singer
