Water Cooled Heat Pumps, Air Conditioners and Coaxial Coils - Heat Pump Building Loop

  • Many water cooled heat pumps and air conditioning systems use coaxial coils as a method of heat transfer. A coax, for short, can be used as either the condenser or the evaporator in a heat pump system. Building heat pump loops are usually kept at approximately 80 degree F. Water cooled air conditioning and refrigeration systems also use coaxial coils.

Man you are a hero. I have watched over 20 videos on how heat pump works, I was so confused, like fucking water actually mix with refrigerant? Like wtf, nobody mentioned or explained the coaxial coil and how it works. Thanks god I found your video

Thanks for the presentation - a good example of water cooled hvac is with boat heater and coolers that utilize sea water.

Right up my alley. I work on tons of WSHP'S, ERV HP's. Some of the tubes are also rifled as well for even better heat transfer and maximum contact time. We also have lots of plate and frame HXers.

I have a location with 3 walk-in boxes that a previous technician bypassed the air cooled condensers and installed coaxial water cooled coils. The water bill is through the roof. I’m sure the water regulator valves are wide open. How do I dial in the head pressure and save water? There isn’t a manufacturer spec sheet because this was a custom job. These are all r134a medium temp reciprocating compressors.

Anyone ever seen an air condenser with a coaxial coil also attached ? So the refrigerant travels through the coaxial coil and then through a air cooled condenser and then to the evaporator.

Go to change the run cap on one of those units. The coax coil starts leaking into the damn water.

Taking the fitting off the water lines on a 30 year old unit is a hole nother storyline. Some of the water piping in the buildings in los Angeles are like over 30 years old .

Same here, we've had ball valves break and glycol floods

Hi Sir, how does the boiler trigger to supply hot water when there is a call for heating? TIA

What is the proper way to clean the coax coil, if there is glycol in the system

    • @HVACKnowItAll
      @HVACKnowItAll  3 місяці тому

You'd have to remove the glycol circulate a chemical cleaner

I'm running a service call tomorrow. Its a no heat and the original tech put in on the notes that the thermostat was not set up for heat pump. New tenants in an old space. Could this really be the case that it's not enegizing the reversing valve? The unit is suspended (little to no access) so I was just curious on what my first steps you would recommend?

Did the first service tech confirm that the compressor was even functioning in cooling mode?? I work on my fair share of water source heat pump’s..Horizontal in ceiling, Chassis heat pumps, and vertical heat pumps…Depending on the age of the unit you’re working on you may have a circuitboard that will have a stored fault code That can generally be confirmed by shorting out to little testy pins on the actual circuitboard…Mrost of the newer heat pumps I come across energize the compressor on Y And energize the reversing valve on O/B of the Thermostat… Also you may want to confirm that the thermostat is indeed meant to function heat pumps…As long as you have the correct Voltage hi/low You can always try jumper ring the thermostat in both heating and cooling to confirm if in fact the Reversing valve is energizing(Noting if you have heat coming out the registers Or if it it’s still producing)….
      Hope this makes sense🙏🏾

Also some of the older water source heat pump’s are control just like a traditional AC furnace…..Y is cooling And W brings on the heat

@@andreagate542 thank you for the advice. First unit was wired correctly but the unit is cutting out on heat (code anti short cycle). 2nd unit is not accessible for service. I can’t even get to the filter rack. Owner is contacting the GC.

@@jonharris7590 your welcome Joe……not Sure if you were able to get any performance data Welding machine ran in heat mode or perhaps the unit would cut off before I could even really get going for an extended period of testing the water side and the air side measurements🤔….And I often run across the same issue where are you cannot even remotely get to the electrical compartment to troubleshoot units that are in the ceiling,….You would think that prior to constructing a building the engineering team would sit down and contemplate whether the machines are going to be installed will have access for service, sadly these dingdong’s only think about themselves And not the little guys like ourselves out in the field servicing equipment🥲😂😂😂😂
