This 1000% its not needed at all. The water just helps to keep the chrome from bluing and to protect the hull/transom from heat damage. The headers are far enough from the hull and transom for that to not matter and they sure as shit aint chrome. Run em dry and let her eat!
Would love to see a full rebuild series of the jet boat, the design of the old hulls is super cool. Hope you guys can do something awesome with it. Thanks for all you do!
The headers of Jack stands boat are dry headers and don't need water to cool the exhaust. The water is backing up into the heads and causing it to run bad.
@@trentdawg2832 The heads are cooled by the engine cooling system. The headers really do look like dry headers. Some are water cooled to keep people from getting burned or to keep the metal from turning blue.
Possibly. He did have milky oil. Also a gate valve coming directly off the pump helps bring the water pressure in the engine down. A tight berkley can pump 100psi through the water line, no gasket is going to stand a chance
Love it. I had a 19' big block jet boat for 10 years. It was built for fun, not fast, but it still ran 70mph with light load in the boat, and from a dig it would hang with much higher hp boats for a good while, a professionally built pump really makes the biggest difference. About 475hp, 93 octane with booster, 10.5:1 BBC, Dominator MB-12S pump with stainless impeller, loader, ride plate, droop, diverter, Comp Cams Jet Boat cam, Big oval heads, dual plane intake, Edelbrock 850cfm Marine Carb. I believe ignition timing was set at 36 degrees, vacuum advance disabled, Mallory HEI with integrated adjustable rev limiter. My boat always ran, always started, never did the Holley loading up, flooding, leaking fuel, any of that crap. If you want reliable on the water stick with a basic carb, or be a freaking expert with Holley's because you will need it if that's what you run! I do miss the boat sometimes, but my kid was terrified of it, and I barely got to use it toward the end, so I sold it. It was a great, fun, reliable good looking boat. Would buy another, but a more functional boat like a day cruiser, and thru-transom exhaust, the noise gets old, not to mention the Game Wardens on the lakes are always busting your balls with OT headers. If they are ugly run them dry, you only need the water to be "legal" (or use muffler inserts) and to keep chrome from burning off.

Here a tip for running that THUMPER CAM. I run one in a SBC and the best setup for them is that they LOVE locked out timing! its a night and day difference even compared to an initial timing of 24 Degrees. I run 37 locked out with flat top pistons and ~ 9.75 compression ratio. I use a Vacuum advance eliminator to Clock the distributor properly and a lock out plate on the mechanical advance. He could be pulling parts from the shop that are laying around or not being used. How many v8’s are in that shop? There only two outboard motors and that’s nightmare and flamingo.
As a boater w/ a ski fish and a deck boat… I can certainly appreciate the concavity lol- This series is fantastic!! Love the color commentary “Ain’t got no Laces to LEND Brothherrrrrrrrr!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Cavitation is a phenomenon in which the static pressure of a liquid reduces to below the liquid's vapour pressure, leading to the formation of small vapor-filled cavities in the liquid. When subjected to higher pressure, these cavities, called "bubbles" or "voids", collapse and can generate shock waves that may damage machinery. These shock waves are strong when they are very close to the imploded bubble, but rapidly weaken as they propagate away from the implosion.
Cleetus just doesn’t know how to drive or set up a boat. His jack plate is set too high for drag racing, but it’s good for top speed. If he had a power jackplate, and knew how to trim it on the fly, he would have walked the jet. The engine was too high for the turns or launching. Also, that engine has been set up for you to start it in gear. Performance outboards idle a little high and don’t like to shift. That’s the reason he blew reverse. The only reason he didn’t win is because he doesn’t know how to set it up or drive it.
funny enough, at our drag boat events up here in the midwest (where we know how to run a small boat fast) there is only 1 jet boat in a field with about 12 outboards (in the unlimited class that runs 115+).
I think James needs to not put the water into the exhaust. They're not jacketed marine manifolds or through the hull so it doesn't matter. Looks like it's just hurting the motor
Yeah, really not sure why cooling them was ever deemed necessary. Even if it is, probably only for long sustained high throttle runs well over what they'll ever be doing
Why would anybody have something like that in the first place because with the original closed system air cooling than everything would be fine with water pump n shit. Just have to strictky use water only for the fishes..
Late comment but at 21:40 its ventilation. Ventilation happens when the prop sucks air in from the top and slips but cavitation is boiling bubbles formed on the surface of prop blades. Cavitation can occur after ventilation though :) Normally its caused by too much prop RPM.

@@tdwz1652 pretty sure they are both more mechanics then cleetus so they probably get along fine talking about fixing their shit and all. But nothing wrong with a little shitshow in a competition.
Cletus - yhe prop you are using is catching engine exhaust on launch and willcause cavitation. The prop you are using are usually found on inboards such as Nautiques. Get a 17 pitch prop to start.. 15 is quick out of the hole, 19 higher top end, 17 middleish for a 150 engine.. and watch your RPMs
He has that extra merc Laser prop that came with the boat, it is a through hub prop, the chopper he is running is an over hub exhaust which are known to cavitate out of the hole, plus with two people that motor doesn't sound like it is turning more than 5000 rpm. If he switches props he'll gain a ton of acceleration & probably pick up some mph because the motor will get into it's powerband.
@@brianclark785 the inside is still water cooled the valves in question are to keep the headers cool if they were still pretty lol..that ship has sailed so it is no longer needed.
The cooling system on his boat looks like it was a budget build. Should have a pressure regulator to regulate the water pressure coming off the drive into the engine, and a proper setup has valves that go to the headers that shut themselves at idle, and will open at speed.
Been wondering about all that. The jet boat I almost bought this spring didn't have that setup. Had me curious cause imma find me a jetboat! This deal is making me want one more
Someone needs to teach James that you don't have to have the header water on, FInnegan's boats don't have water in the exhaust. Just keep it turned off. All the water does is silence the exhaust and keep the headers cool.. who cares if they get a little warm.
@@kadmow he's shown in the previous video working on it that he had to retune the carb because the water kept flowing back in the head and killing the engine. There's absolutely no reason to have it on. Just turn it off and tune the carb like normal.
Also the primary and secondary float vents have that weird bridge that goes between them. That's not right. They should flow to open air. Normally a marine float vent has a 180* bend to overflow back into the carb.
@@pw383426 if you look close it's spark plug boots and a piece of tubing to mimic the marine/offroad carbs so that it doesn't overflow.. I'm sure James made it himself.
No tellin what that hull would do if it suddenly lost the engine at 70mph. Might flip if the nose digs in or might get swamped from the wake catching up if it slows fast enough.
Hey Cleet, I'm not sure if you do this already, but if you don't, I'll tell ya'. It's always a good idea to use compressed air to blow all the water out of the boats' cooling systems A.S.A.P. after getting them out of the water, just to help reduce corrosion.

the only limit was overall price.... James just played the game better
@@ralan350 Hence why I said, well played.
It start it i just hold the throttle half way down so it don't lumber on the starter. I hope this helps if you even get to read it!
12:19 I was waiting for George to scream "Monica!" as Garrets pulling away, lol.
I'm gonna be sad when the boat challenge is over. Been loving all your boating content this summer! Y'all made some killer shit this season.
Hopefully they keep the challenges going with new projects
You guys are genuinely great guys. You can see that your friendship is rock solid. I wish I had the chance to kick it with you on the level without cameras to get to know you all. You definitely seem like the kind of crew that I would love to be a part of.
Yo, alec is the man, keep that man on camera!!! Freakin layn on the front holding the camera in one hand, during drag race..... Sir, you are the best addition since the crew dropped to 2. You 3 are a great team! HellYeahBrother!
When this competition is over, James boat needs to be fixed up right. That thing could be SWEET
Sadly they might sell them after this comp
Nah. Fix it up! keeper for sure
I think it's more likely that James will give it to Whistling Diesel to destroy.
Texas speed big block
I’m so glad Whistin Diesel is exposing Cletus.
I literally love this channel and what’s it’s become!! Don’t wanna shit on cooper but with him here it wouldn’t be the channel that it is rn James and cleet and George are the best combo no matter what they’re doing it’s entertaining as hell brother
He's having so many problems cause he's adding water to that exhaust when it's not needed with that style header
Yup
For real
Jet boat needs a restore and stroker with a super charger after this “season”
Toasts old motor or bust
James needs to plumb some water through his exhaust
@@codylinn9548 no shit...that would be amazing...but it CLEARLY needs a new tunnel and transom, you can see it flex in a couple bits.
Junkyard Tahoe motor or bust lol
Agreed just throw everything go fast at it lol
Surely George and Zac deserve bonus points for repping McFarland Marine shirts and the extra loud board shorts? 🤷 Cool series guys and heaps of laughs!
George deserves 1 point for each time he's towed jackstand back home.
I was about to say the same
30 minutes!?!!?! Yeah this is going to be lit. Thanks for the content as always. Literally. A modern Top Gear. Never change Cleet
George is the best!!!I love that he is part of this channel!!♡
There needs to be a shirt made that says, "theres still budget left". How in the world is there still budget left
Cause there’s still budget left duh 🙄
I will x2 that shirt.
This 😂
I'd buy it haha
He could be pulling parts from the shop that are laying around or not being used. How many v8’s are in that shop? There only two outboard motors and that’s nightmare and flamingo.
This has been the best series ever...and the Jack Stand Jet Boat still gets my vote lol
Agree!
I absolutely love James' boat, but Georges is def the most reliable and most sorted out of all of em.
I think we need to see jackstands boat dialed in on nitrous after the challenge
Ls swap on nitrous….
I feel like George and Jack stand really had a rocky relationship when George first came in lol
Hey Jackstand, whenever you're ready to sell that boat, let me know. I call dibs on it lol
I call the nightmare!!!!!
I got $5k cash right now for that behemoth
Jackstand needs to give that engine a good going over, probably start with either rebuilding or replacing that carb.
i think he just needs a hand throttle. Looks like he struggles to keep even pressure on that foot peddle.
It's a new carb. First thing he did to the boat.
Omg always a technophobe with basic obvious advice, James is an A1 mechanic! How condescending you are!
Unless those valves do more than just run water into the exhaust to cool them then just leave them turned off, i don't think they are helping either.
@@HashDogg06 thats how a marine engine is cooled, without out them it will overheat
The jet boat was so dope it was hard not to laugh at how much trouble it was having but then when they went to race it just took off lol
George: “If it rips it’s gonna rip”
I felt that 😂
Also George: “he dang sure ain’t gonna catch no fish… hopefully “
Its crazy how James boat running like total ass easily beat the other two. Just like they say boys. There's no replacement for displacement!
are you talking about hull displacement or engine displacement. its got nearly none of one, and a lot of the other
well its just as light maybe a bit heavier but it has over double the horsepower
Yes there is a replacement for displacement. Turbo.
funny enough, at our drag boat events up here in the midwest (where we know how to run a small boat fast) there is only 1 jet boat in a field with about 12 outboards (in the unlimited class that runs 115+).
Fun drinking game: take a shot every time Cleetus says "cavitate"
Doing it now, hell yeah brother!
The shit talking has officially leveled up nearly to Hoonigan levels. I am HERE FOR IT
Good honest mates trash talk
@@kenleach2516 yessir they do!
I think James needs to not put the water into the exhaust. They're not jacketed marine manifolds or through the hull so it doesn't matter. Looks like it's just hurting the motor
Yep, he doesn't need to run it it's only for cooling the headers which are to roached out to worry about at this point...
@@alexmawdsley Because they’re typically surrounded by a ton of highly flammable stuff- not including the fuel.
@@Z-Ack , what? Lol! There is no closed cooling, and there is no water pump, it pulls water off the pump bowl. Not sure about your Air Cooled comment…
Late comment but at 21:40 its ventilation. Ventilation happens when the prop sucks air in from the top and slips but cavitation is boiling bubbles formed on the surface of prop blades.
Cavitation can occur after ventilation though :) Normally its caused by too much prop RPM.

I love all of your videos, but i think videos like these are on the top of the list for me! I always smile and laugh so much! Thank you Cleetus and the Team.
James got the coolest, most rowdy boat, but LS George his boat might be overall the best choice. The Flamingo is cool too and runs pretty fast.
Um nope. I'll talk a open header screaming tunnel hull V8 paint chevy mother focking red any day
James boat is just awesome ... when it runs of course, which makes it all the more autehntic, too. Just awesome. Congrat James!
James boat sounds like FREEDOM! He wins, done, over. 🦅
My boy James heard drag race and came prepared lol. When that boat is feeling good it moves out. The flamingo is a nice vessel. The nightmare gets style points

Please do more boat uploads they are so fun to watch I feel like everyone would love some more boat uploads like these. Well done love the content.
Cleet always killing it with the best content on UA-cam
Cletus - yhe prop you are using is catching engine exhaust on launch and willcause cavitation. The prop you are using are usually found on inboards such as Nautiques. Get a 17 pitch prop to start.. 15 is quick out of the hole, 19 higher top end, 17 middleish for a 150 engine.. and watch your RPMs
And lower the motor a bit.....thats an AWFULLY big roost, lol
I believe the motor he’s using is a thru hub exhaust which means the exhaust has to go the the prop 😂
@@jamesstarling7273 Very similar motor to mine and yes Exhaust most likely goes through the hub. LOL
I think in terms of this challenge he has no money left to change anything
He has that extra merc Laser prop that came with the boat, it is a through hub prop, the chopper he is running is an over hub exhaust which are known to cavitate out of the hole, plus with two people that motor doesn't sound like it is turning more than 5000 rpm. If he switches props he'll gain a ton of acceleration & probably pick up some mph because the motor will get into it's powerband.
the boat part of this channel has just brought it to another level!!!! you guys have awsom content.
I really wish James would just leave the water valves closed. That thing would run so much better!
Ya with them not going out the bottom and back why does it need water valves? I don't get it. Big blocks run open headers in cars all the time!
The water is to cool the engine. From what I understand it is like the radiator but circulates the lake water in instead of a closed radiator system.
Exhaust Water may increase cylinder scavenging - ?? is there any need in this "Pack" - no real competition - if it runs.
I'm sure James made it himself.
how can you not love a bright red boat with a small block in it? despite all the issues, its still my favorite
Cleeter : “ one thing I don’t like is that boat turning off “ that had me laughing 😂
No tellin what that hull would do if it suddenly lost the engine at 70mph. Might flip if the nose digs in or might get swamped from the wake catching up if it slows fast enough.
People across the country are going to think this is what all Floridians do…. And they’d be right!
We JUST moved to Tally from PA and theres already a Center Console with a Yammie 250 in the Driveway, just gotta add a broken washer and dryer
Man it is awesome watching jack stand and George heckle each other that looked like such a good time
George towed James 2 times but only 1 point, that should be 2 points taking him to 6 and closing it up even more! 😬
Hey Cleet, I'm not sure if you do this already, but if you don't, I'll tell ya'. It's always a good idea to use compressed air to blow all the water out of the boats' cooling systems A.S.A.P. after getting them out of the water, just to help reduce corrosion.
Or just hook it up to muffs for 30 seconds
Naa just flush them with salt away or fresh water. Metal does not oxidize with out air
We always hook them up to freshwater (water hose) and run them for 5-10 minutes.
@@matmuffin1 As I stated in my original comment, I'm more concerned with corrosion than oxidization.
@@joshkamp7499 Never done that before, I just stick my gasoline powered air compressor in the trunk.
